From where I am standing, it looks like Goomba was a technically better racer, but you basically executed all the theory that made all the shortcuts possible. I think you should take extra pride knowing that you laid the foundations for most of the course records even if you dont hold them yourself.

The fact that none of this would have happened if it weren’t for Summoning Salt’s original Ultra Shortcut video makes this that much more wild. These videos are becoming part of the very narrative that they tell.
But that was made by a random person, as he says! He can't contradict himself, can he?
His original Mario Kart 64 video is probably what inspired it, since that was released the year before the first new shortcut was found. People watched that one, and probably decided to try and see if there was a way to make some huge, previously unknown cuts in Double Dash.

Mathii's story is quite incredible. At the start of his WR attempts, he had nowhere near the same raw pace as goomba, but with all his practice and determination, he managed to rival a Mario Kart world champion. Goes to show that the ordinary can become extraordinary with trial and error and a lot, A LOT of practice

I mean, I *highly doubt* Goomba was just born with the power to run Mario Kart really fast. He, too, became extraordinary due to practice, determination, and trial and error. I imagine he just got a head start compared to Mathii
I think something important to remember is that a lot of these people aren’t enemies. But instead a community. It’s easy to think these runners hate eachother, going back and forth with the record. But here we see that the two top runners, Goomba and Matthi get on a call and work together to find a new method. Competitors, Not rivals.

I agree, that was such a wholesome detail. Also such mad props to iMathII for not just finding the skips and setting the first records, but managing to keep up with and trade and even hold records against the world class driving Goomba.
Normally it you’re not the top and you find a way to break the game, your records are short lived. But he not only kept up with a ton of practice, but also kept being the one to find skips on new courses and trade records, even with a bunch of absolutely optimal classic driving required. Absolutely insane.

Yes! I don't know if ALL speedrunning communities are like this, but I've been part of a small speedrunning community for a smallish game and all of us are very encouraging of one another, offering tips and advice freely when asked. I hope all of the communities have this same level of comaraderie!
It’s kind of unreal that DD still looks so incredibly good after almost 20 years. Still my favorite of the series.

Yeah. *Aesthetics* can be timeless, even if the underlying technology becomes dated. Okami is another great example. 6th Gen game, but its graphics are so perfectly implemented that it's hard to imagine how they could be improved, besides resolution bumps.

Mathii feels like the main character of a book here. Starting off as a rookie looking up to Goomba, coming to prominence by winning through creative thinking rather than strength or skill initially. After that they become friendly rivals attempting to continually one up each other but also working together to come up with new and better strategies, it's genuinely a type of story you expect to read or watch in middle school.

I love that Salt realized the power of his background music. The new tracks he's picked out are MINT 👌🏻
The second I heard his main song “we’re finally landing” by Home I immediately started loving his channel and then all of the different tunes he uses to change the mood for like new discoveries and such make his videos fantastic.
His power up is scary more background music, and a better mic.
This still shows just how damn tight the programming of Double Dash is.
Double Dash has always been my favorite mariokart for non-speedruning reasons. But the knowledge that its programming is so airtight that it took until 2018 to find the second viable shortcut and that didn't even open the floodgates just adds to my love of the game. (I think mariokart wii had the rumble volcano shortcut exposed and then a flood of shortcuts opened up.)
I just wanna talk about how there's still only like 7 courses broken so far. That's it. Mario Kart Wii that came later on is totally busted and yet it's predecessor is genuinely well designed and hard to break. Crazy

Wii also has a much larger player base. Double dash sold 7 million units to MKWii’s *37 million* . More players = higher chance of finding glitches
Mathii is pretty smart honestly, he knew the upper echelon of MKDD runners was extremely tightly contested, but managed to carve out a niche as one of the bets shortcut runners in the whole community
Can we also shoutout to the fact he went from not even top material to one of the best purely through learning these shortcuts?

One of my favourite things in this video is how Mathii went from being another player trying to beat a record to the jump king of this game finding all sorts of secrets. A legend in his own right.
This world is rapidly passing away and I hope that you repent and take time to change before all out disaster occurs! Belief in messiah alone is not enough to grant you salvation - Matthew 7:21-23, John 3:3, John 3:36 (ESV is the best translation for John 3:36) if you believed in Messiah you would be following His commands as best as you could. If you are not a follower of Messiah I would highly recommend becoming one. Call on the name of Jesus and pray for Him to intervene in your life - Revelation 3:20.
Contemplate how the Roman Empire fulfilled the role of the beast from the sea in Revelation 13. Revelation 17 confirms that it is in fact Rome. From this we can conclude that A) Jesus is the Son of God and can predict the future or make it happen, B) The world leaders/nations/governments etc have been conspiring together for the last 3000+ years going back to Babylon and before, C) History as we know it is fake. You don't really need to speculate once you start a relationship with God.
Can't get a response from God? Fasting can help increase your perception and prayer can help initiate events. God will ignore you if your prayer does not align with His purpose (James 4:3) or if you are approaching Him when "unclean" (Isaiah 1:15, Isaiah 59:2, Micah 3:4). Stop eating food sacrificed to idols (McDonald's, Wendy's etc) stop glorifying yourself on social media or making other images of yourself (Second Commandment), stop gossiping about other people, stop watching obscene content etc. Have a blessed day!

reminds me of my own experience with the new Daisy Cruiser glitch in MK7, getting a WW top 10 time (it's now 11th) without a single no glitch time in the top 150
I strongly agree, someone doesn't need to even be in the top 100 and can still get the first ever wr when it comes to glitches and experimentation. A concept not all of Mario kart community thinks is possible, but is very possible.

There are innovators and optimizers, and people who fall somewhere in between. Mathii would be more of an innovator, while Goomba is more of an optimizer.
thank you!! yeah going into the game i loved watching videos of the shortcuts, mushroom bridge in particular. so as soon as i was barely good enough to do the glitch, i was grinding it lol. once i realized i had the opportunity to get my first world record, i just went for it. im very glad i made it there :) to this day mushroom bridge sc 3lap is still my proudest record, ill get that 1'03 soon enough lol

Every time Summoning Salt uploads a video, he just makes my day but this one is different. Mario Kart Double Dash holds a special place in my heart and to see the world record history behind it with loyal players still playing the game to this day is enough to make me emotional. Thank you Summoning Salt for making this video. I hope to play the game again soon.
I love the fact that the interval between videos keeps getting shorter and shorter without losing any of the quality. It’s almost like a speed run in and of itself.

While I love how humble Salt is with his own achievements and influence, and the running joke of him barely acknowledging himself is undeniably hilarious, he deserves to be proud of the impact he’s had on the speedrunning community and I don’t think anyone would complain if he bragged a little, he’s certainly earned the right to.

I’m so happy that MathII and Goomba joined forces in a call and found a skip in just a couple hours. It’s not so much about who Vs who is better but it’s about the game itself and the fun with finding and performing these skips
I have to say. I was born on 2001, so I havent played most of the games you show, or at least I dont have that real feeling of nostalgia for them. And, for some reason, you manage to give me warmth/childhood nostalgia/joy with the way you present the videos with its narrative and music

Similar story here, not nostalgic for those games but it somehow gives off that vibe. I'm honestly not even really invested in speedrunning, the only speedruns I even watch are Minecraft CTM runs, yet these videos are so unbelievably satisfying. That strange false nostalgia is just too good to pass up.

Agreed. My one complaint about Salt's videos is that I wish he'd show more of the runners' personalities, add a little more human element. Anything like this helps, to me at least.
It’s crazy to think how one of my favorite childhood games had so much mystery to it shortcut wise for 15 years in till 2018 rolled around, I truly felt like I was watching a documentary on such a good game.

The fact that it took this long to break that system is a testament to how well it works
you know that one small period of time where in Japan they opened up a small contest for MKDD on who was the fastest in each course? What would happen if someone submitted one of these ultra shortcutted attempts? How would the officials react to seeing their game (how they would probably see it as) utterly butchered for the sake of a faster time?
Of I were them I would probably just do what I always do: eat a bowl of good chilli and watch the dogs at the park

That happened with my brother with the original Punch Out. He was stuck on Super Macho Man for days, then he showed a friend the fight to be like "look how impossible this is!" and he beat it on that attempt.

I just looked up leaderboards for MIKE TYSON'S PUNCH-OUT!! (1987) after watching blindfolded history of punch out, I can't believe you hold 6 out of 6 WR in EVERY category. You're madman, I don't know what is better, your skill or your beautiful editing and storytelling. I'm always so impressed by summoning salt's humility, when he made his punchout video and he was the standing record holder, he was so humble about it, now when one of his videos was literally the catalyst for everything he goes and proactively removes his name from the story to not take as much credit.
You know, I'd imagine the only thing better than being the de facto guy to document a lot of Speedrunning History in documentary videos would be learning that your documentary videos actually influenced and pushed speedrunning forward themselves

I had always wondered whether an unbreakable game for speedrunners could be made and it turns out that it's the one I've played during my childhood all along. Double dash truly is an amazing game.
Legends Arceus has no useful glitches, as does Sprit Tracks.
Watching this as a programmer, albeit a hobbyist one, I feel no matter how wel you code something there will always be that tiny insignificant flaw or loophole that will let someone break your creations. All it takes os a bit of creativity. And frankly I love it!
And this scales with the complexity of the project, the number of programmers contributing, time pressure etc. Actually it's kind of amazing that this game was able to "hold" for so long.

@@Liam-vb3xo programming decisions are a mix of ease, emotion and knowledge. Sometimes one option is easier or just more appealing for some reason.
@@illford6921 no for sure, there's probably a reason why they did it the way they did it. It could have been a temporary solution that they thought they would fix but thought "nah it's good enough" or any of the things you already suggested.
Cus it held up for 15 years and even then it requires hard tricks to exploit, so it served its function.
There's a cycle in speed running where glitches let us understand a game's mechanics, and the mechanics inform where to find glitches. What makes DD so interesting is that it was so difficult finding glitches that the mechanics had to be discovered first through other tools, sort of the opposite of Mario Kart Wii.
Reminds me of the James Web Space telescope. Nasa had to literally invent other technologies for decades in order for the final product to be created years later.
Lol this reads like the difference between forward and backward genetics. Forward genetics are concerned with finding the gene from the function, while backwards are the function from the gene. The genes are the mechanics, and the functions are the glitches, i swear 😂

It’s crazy to think that it was YOUR video that inspired a search for shortcuts that eventually got big enough to get their own Summoning Salt vid. It’s just really cool to see proof of how inspirational your channel is and how sharing amazing content in general can inspire future discoveries!
I like how iMathII and Goomba both have their own strengths and work together to take Double Dash apart. It seems like Goomba is pretty certainly the best at normal driving, and he analyzes and experiments with the game, but iMathII has an affinity for shortcuts.
I know next to nothing about video game history or speedrunning, but your commentary style is so enticing and informative that my heart does a little jump for joy every time you post. These are more than history videos. You're storytelling. I've rewatched several of your videos more than a few times because of how gripping your storytelling is.

I love your channel... if I ever need a video for when I'm going through a rough time... for some reason these videos are therapeutic, and serve as a relaxing break from the stress of the real world. I just want to thank you for all the effort you and everyone else put into these videos. That intro song will forever be iconic, and I believe it adds to the therapeutic atmosphere of these videos

Salt clearly has a fan base that drop EVERYTHING when he drops a vid. The amount of views sky rockets much faster than someone with 1.4M subs would expect to see.
It's because he prioritizes quality over quantity, and it (rightfully) brings in a wide variety of viewers

Fantastic video once again, Salt! :D It's crazy that for 1 decade-half, it seemed Mario Kart: Double Dash, outside of Waluigi Stadium, was shortcut free. That is until almost a half-decade ago where several players found it possible to beat several other courses in the game in record time, and is now only a matter of time before the game's other tracks will finally be broken by someone, and I look forward to seeing who those people will be in the foreseeable future! :) Congrats to the guys that finally managed to clear these racetracks in record-breaking time!
Salt's videos are all top tier but when he makes MarioKart videos they instantly become some of the most entertaining content on the internet
I love the Mario kart ones but I think my favorite is still the quest to best Matt Turk and the one with matias going for complete domination in the Mario kart game and the entire community fighting to stop him. Still makes me sad he never achieved it
I'm pretty sure it's a rule of life that no matter what you're doing when summoning salt posts a new vid you drop whatever it is and watch the entire vid ASAP

The fact that it’s taken so long, so much effort, and most of them don’t even save that much time is a testament to how well polished Double Dash is as a game. But it also shows how a couple dedicated people with enough time and skill can accomplish anything, and as usual the way you present this history is inspiring.
I love how this channel makes useless trivia the most interesting thing to learn about and know. I've never played this game and probably never will. But the level of execution and research is amazing. You can hear it in the button inputs during the attempts how intense and precise each press is.
Can't believe that your video was the key to reklind the scene. I remember watching it and being amazed by it and to think there are now many shortcuts being rooted on MK Double Dash is wild. Keep the great work Salt.

Double Dash had by far some of the best (legit) short cuts. I remember me and my friends just driving around the map trying to find them, completely ignoring the race
God damn I love these videos. I first found summoning salt channel around 4 years ago. I think you had 200 or 300k subs. I remember hearing you using vapor wave and synth wave, it’s so appropriate for these games!! Love it.

Loving the addition of the time charts , makes perfect sense. They only start the first recorded time and progress to the current record. easy to see progression at a glance.
I love that double dash didn’t originally have any shortcuts, because it meant it was a super optimized game for lines and boosts and stuff. It didn’t rely on shortcuts, it relied on amazing skill and lines
