What I love about this history of world records is that each "chapter" that covers each Champion builds them up and makes them feel like actual world champions of a more physical sport and gives them this strange amount of gravitas. Love Salt's vids.
Only think that the quality of the graphics could be a bit better, perhaps vectorising the graphic and making the balls a bit smaller to see the different times better would be nice, definitely a great inclusion though
@@filmpjesman1 I found taking the base chart and then pasting it onto a 4K canvas in gimp and drawing over it cleans things up super well. That way even when you zoom into it for close ups like summoningsalt does, it doesn't have nearly as muvh distortion.
I love how, as we move to games with younger communities (meaning more thoroughly documented origins), the beginnings of these videos have gone from: 'There are no records of how set this time, but its considered by top runners to be legitimate to: ''s Speedrun strategy mainly revolved around running the game speedily...'
Having the live interview/commentary by top runners (Zacc in this case) truly takes these documentaries to a whole other level. Please please please continue with them!
@@John_NYT I see your point, but if more interviews were spliced in throughout the documentary (as opposed to just at the end during the huge monumental run) then this spoiling effect would be lessened. I think Abyssoft has a 2 hour long documentary about MR vs Dan in Mario Kart and it had smaller commentary clips from each about the different events they went to and the different strats that were being used at that time
Imagine the time required to research the history of a 3 hour speedrun. Then my man makes a feature length film about it, never loses steam. What a legend.
"So grandpa, what did you do in your twenties and thirties?" "I spent 16 hours a day to grind for the world record in a 20 year old LEGO game" "So you got the world record?" "... No"
Wow. Not only is it so exciting to see my name just for a brief moment in one of these videos after watching the channel for so long, but to see my favourite speed game chosen for a video made me so excited when I saw it come up this morning. Although I wasn’t around much in the community after my times, I have still been actively keeping up with the leaderboards up to the recent 2:24s and I’d really like to just note how absurd these times seem to me. I remember when I was most actively running and I spent my summer holidays from school playing over 6-9 hours most days consistently grinding out ILs for hours on end or I was strat finding looking for the smallest of movement optimisations just to make sub 3 more viable. A large time was also spent streaming for hours going for new records. Through this i had been under the impression sub 3 was barely viable, but unfortunately I believed that the game would hit a huge holt as it seemed very hard to even achieve this at the time. HOWEVER after the HUGE improvements, time and effort put in by the new gen runners, I was no less than shocked with just what can be done when you have a highly motivated team of runners. So i thank them massively, for not only making so many huge milestones become reality, but for being an amazing community. I remember when I had just started speedrunning and the record was in the high 3:30s and I had caught a few of tsgs records live and from there I knew the game had so much potential and it wouldn’t have been done without everyone’s hard work to achieve these records the years. It has been an amazing journey and it’s far from over yet. I can’t wait to see who gets the sub 2:20. Hey, I might even come back and try :) I would like to thank salt too for giving the speedruns of this game one of the, or even the biggest pushes it’s ever had in publicity and through this I hope it not only increases the size of the community massively but also the competition. I believe 2023 is going to be a massive year for TCS. ❤️
Never thought I’d see the day. Takes me back, glad I got to be part of this community all those years ago and am happy to see where the community is now.

I love how summoning salts videos make you feel a major bond/battle begin to form against the speed runners. The story-telling makes the whole thing so immersive
A lot of that bond is lost in this video, since you never see the runners' faces or hear their voices. For some reason that's not in these videos anymore. It's probably because they swear and get the videos demonetized or some nonsense like that.
I love the mental image of it being done with the same urgency as a speedrun. Like Vader full sprints to Palpatine, shoves him the hell off a ledge, and is running in place shouting "TIME!"
I'm one of those "I see a Summoning Salt video, I click" people, but seeing one for a game I never played more than maybe 10 minutes of on a demo, never really had an interest in, and don't know anything about... and STILL being glued to my screen for an hour and a half... major props to you, Salt. And it's not just a credit to you as a creator, but a credit to the runners who are so devoted to these games that their fight for WR is so engaging of a story to tell. Your videos never fail to make me sit back in awe with a smile on my face.
Thats especially true for me and his punchout videoes. Never played, yet they are some of my top top SummoningSalt videoes. The quest to beat Matt Turk is in my top 3 for sure
Just wanted to let you know you were credited with inspiring the brand new King of Contra crowned 6 days ago. You’re an incredible boon for the speed running community and your content is impeccable. So much props to you king.
What I love the most about Summoning Salt videos is his ability to make me care so much about the players. I am not a speed runner, barely a gamer, but I am so emotionally invested every time in games and people I have not known before the video.
I never thought about that. I think about that too sometimes; I'll feel amazing after finishing one of his videos, but sometimes looking back, I wonder, "What makes it so enjoyable? How does he make what would simply be a story of the exchange of records and discovery of strategies so enjoyable?" I've watched Summoning Salt for a long time, and the part at the end with him describing Zac's thought process of his run and the emotions running through his mind was honestly one of the most impactful moments of this channel I have seen. And I think you got the right idea, thanks for pointing out the answer to this question. His videos function like a story/movie with real life people, but you never really realize it.
I know this is an unpopular opinion, but i think the interviews break the flow of the narrative. I'm 100% listening to them, but i think splitting the narrative and the interview in two videos would be better
@@LuccianoNovasm64 will 100% have another wr in any category you can name. goldeneye is only like that bc they don't time to the frame so they actually have the perfect time

I would love if you could chart each runners PBs as their own line. When people are trading the record you can see each time the gap is closed and you’d see two different lines racing downwards. It would also be a really neat way to show when a new player moves super quickly towards the top because right now you only show the world record. It’d show a really cool timeline of events with the WRs still being highlighted
Right? We get attached to the runners lol, they're like characters in the story SS is telling so it's sad when some of them get left behind, especially when they were once major players
It’s honestly insane, I remember watching some of the videos from when summoning salt was just starting to gain popularity and remember thinking “wow these videos are amazing” but they continue to improve with the recent addition of the timeline and now an interview from one of the runners. Keep it up!
30 minutes into this, I was distracted and thinking it had gone longer. I said to myself that this was an impressive run on the world records and the successive buildup was cool. And then I realized there was another hour left in the video. ;D
Having run this game for over 3 years, it is so emotional to finally see it getting the love this speedrun deserves. Thanks for the video SummoningSalt!
When I'm speedrunning, I often say to myself. "I don't want a PB. I want WR." I always want the hare-brainediest outcome that will rule in eternity. Mad respect to Zac from me as well.

The way the community exploded since then has never stopped to amaze me and I think it's thanks in large to the incredible bonding that's present in the community. I love the time lowering chart. You should look into using vector graphics for these instead of raster graphics so it's not so blurry when zoomed in. Great video as always, you make any speed game seem like the most interesting one out there
1p2c sounds like a droid designation, which is incredibly fitting. Edit: Seeing some of the shortcuts in this and other games makes me wonder how people go about finding them. Would you mind doing a “Speedrunning Theory” type video to explain how some of the weirder ones came about?

The Lego Community has some of the best and most dedicated community members in all the Speedrunning communities I've had the pleasure of being a part of, and coming back and watching the development of all the skips and growth of runners fills me with pride knowing that I was there. My favorite part of Summoning Salt videos are the segments where we get to learn about all the new trick discoveries, including who discovered/created them, and I'm glad all of the glitch hunters and tech developers get their proper just due in these videos, so allow me to personally thank Summoning Salt for continuing to include them with every World Record History Video. I haven't ran this game personally since that '2:57' you saw for a brief bit during the race for '2:50' portion of the video. I don't think I was ever as good at the game as the absolute units of talent and dedication (1P2C is not something I grasped very well) that are the other runners, but I enjoyed playing with you guys for the time that I did.
The thing I love the most about the speedrunning community, is how much of a group effort it all is. Everyone is working together to find all the best tricks to shave off a few extra seconds, and in the end it's all about your individual skill if you're able to be the best one at executing it all.

The “ultra kill” actually makes total sense. In the trick one player is killed and then, with another player tagged in, the emperor can be pushed off the ledge. In the movie, Luke is nearly killed by the emperor and then ‘player two’ Darth Vader throws the emperor off the ledge. This trick is actually just film accuracy. (Sarcasm)

It's really cool seeing all these interviews with the runners in recent videos, really enhances the story behind these records hearing it from the horses mouth, as it were
The part of these videos that always get me is the fact that at the end of the video a new chapter is about to begin in the history of that game. The video will bring so much attention to the scene that it would cause a explosion of popularity.
This my be your best video yet. The amount of emotions and your ability to just make a 90 minute video feel effortless to watch was amazing. This is low-key a great documentary with so much history behind it. All the success to you!

@@Just_normal_youtube_channel Yeah sub 2 hours seems doable. I was one of the two players who pushed the Mobile WR down around 3 years ago. My PB stands at 2:19 and is from March 2020. I just have so many other things I want to do in my life that speedrunning really is only an option in the semester breaks. Maybe one day :)
That chart at the end is all over the place, it's probably the only speedrun where anybody can jump on and find something new and take the endless top spot.
I love your ability to tell the story of second place. Even in mainstream storytelling, it's woefully underutilized, but between your own storytelling prowess and the tragedies of speedruns, you do a wonderful job. WiiSuper is the real hero.
That eroadhouse 2:31 is one of the most incredible runs you've ever shown on this channel. There are so many memorable completely understandable chokes with runners on that kind of pace at the end of long runs, to see someone actually pull through that pressure is astounding. Fantastic job presenting it as well. I teared up when you revealed it. Incredible!
That's how some of the best stories are told. It's nice to be reminded that even in an exciting tale, there are plenty of others having their own memorable journeys
including the actual interview with the speedrunner was such a great idea! i hope to see it more in the future. hearing the actual words someone said about their time speedrunning just completely changes the tone of everything.
I just love how the game seems to have a really great community. All the top runners doing streams together and organising these events is just nice to see.
I think your best skill is in your narration. I honestly never know if you are leading towards disappointment or success or what. Being kept guessing makes the twists and turns in the stories so satisfying. Thanks for the vid!

What I love about this history of world records is that each "chapter" that covers each Champion builds them up and makes them feel like actual world champions of a more physical sport and gives them this strange amount of gravitas. Love Salt's vids.
I love how in the Ultra Kill (20:27) you just do what the cutscene shows. This almost feels like an easter egg instead of an exploit.

The timeline addition is a huge aid in visualizing all these records. Your videos have become noticeably more enjoyable with their inclusion.
it's one of the best designed graphics on youtube, imo
I fully agree. Really helps visualize the speed at which some records are broken.
The Jon Bois inspiration really shows in a good way!
I love how, as we move to games with younger communities (meaning more thoroughly documented origins), the beginnings of these videos have gone from:
'There are no records of how set this time, but its considered by top runners to be legitimate

@woooooooooooooooooooooooo you can do borderlands 2 in 10 hours that way
Having the live interview/commentary by top runners (Zacc in this case) truly takes these documentaries to a whole other level. Please please please continue with them!
I keep expecting Netflix to sign @SummoningSalt to a 1 or 2 season deal.
I’m actually not a fan of that aspect. Spoils the run.

Hey, I might even come back and try :)
I would like to thank salt too for giving the speedruns of this game one of the, or even the biggest pushes it’s ever had in publicity and through this I hope it not only increases the size of the community massively but also the competition. I believe 2023 is going to be a massive year for TCS. ❤️

Holy fucking shit KingSammelot, love when you commented on my r/gd post about beating The Nightmare
Thats what makes Salts's videos so engaging and watchable!
A lot of that bond is lost in this video, since you never see the runners' faces or hear their voices. For some reason that's not in these videos anymore. It's probably because they swear and get the videos demonetized or some nonsense like that.
Love ur cntent
it’s cool that the speedrun strats for the Emperor are what canonically happened to him
I love the mental image of it being done with the same urgency as a speedrun.

I always get emotional over these videos. I don’t know how salt does it

I love the time lowering chart. You should look into using vector graphics for these instead of raster graphics so it's not so blurry when zoomed in. Great video as always, you make any speed game seem like the most interesting one out there
Or just render the chart at a high enough resolution if the editing software doesn't support vector graphics
Maybe it is in purpose to Match the Pixel graphic and the Font
Pretty sure it's a stylistic choice

Sometimes, they're concepts from how a game should play, sometimes they're accidents, sometimes they're TAS concepts put to real runs.

The “ultra kill” actually makes total sense. In the trick one player is killed and then, with another player tagged in, the emperor can be pushed off the ledge.
