His first speed run he submitted for the category was an 8:38.850 on May 12th 2023. He submitted 8 more runs over the next 7 months when he finally managed a sub 7 run. His previous run before that held 4th place for a day if I am reading the leaderboard right. Mr_Shy_Guy could’ve been the first sub 7 if he had 1.0 but it wouldn’t have held up against RyMacG4. RyMacG4’s account was only a few months old without a run to his name when this video was made.
Just an update: *Nomad did it!!* As of January 9th, 2022, EmoadNomad became the world record holder with a time of 7m 02s 067ms!! The grind paid off, we love to see it

Not trying to show off, but he could talk about my record on Cscz on Expert… he could also talk about the Easy category, which is the most competitive, though I only took part in it once, actually doing a deathless solo run, instead of the usual way.
My heart strings were tugged by that brutal ending and it's literally my fault lmao, but it's kept things very interesting, I hope to make an analysis vid soon with my own comments and stuff like that
The amount of time I've spent on this this game is absurd. Bowling especially. Truly an unprecedented gaming phenomenon to have sold 83m copies on a motion control game... and who better to tell us all about it than Summoning Salt.
I love how the early strategies basically boil down to swinging that damn wiimote as hard as you can and then praying to your deity of choice. That's some real high level gameplay right there
This channel is the gold standard of what TH-cam is capable of. Whenever there's a new video I feel like I did back in the old 1970's-1980's era of PBS and BBC documentaries: real content, great storytelling, no bs, perfect announcer, and of course always walking away having learned something. None of this is flashy or loud or over the top, it's just amazing content.
Damn I thought this was gonna end triumphantly. Though it didn't, it was perhaps one of your best endings yet. You always need to acknowledge every player going into a record, because each player has a part to play in it. From pushing a holder to go further, or nearly beating it, everyone has a hand in it. Great story, and great storytelling as always. Keep up the amazing work!
He really has a way of subverting expecations. I was dead certain he'd go "SYKE HE GOT IT ONE DAY LATER" and then he didn't, and it really is just a somber tribute to one who fell short by just the smallest of margins. Edge of your seat stuff.
Summoning Salt is really good at storytelling. I started this video with a bemused "competitive Wii Sports? Haha, sure. How does _that_ work?" mood and I ended the video with a heartbroken "sub-7 minutes was there, it was possible, it was *real* for a fleeting moment..." I appreciate the choice to end on a hopeful note, reiterating that a pace like that has been seen before, and will be seen again. Normally in these kind of speedrunning analysis videos, you only see the one successful run, and don't see the hundreds of failed attempts it took to get to that point. And putting the spotlight on the struggle (instead of the triumph) makes the story feel more relatable, more human.
What an ending!! If you followed salt long enough you know he almost always ends the video with something like "...and this is where the record stands today". But acknowledging and praising the determination it takes EVERY high-level runner to get where they are on the leaderboards has so much impact. Thank you for bringing this up and thank you for positively pushing people like nomad to reach their goal. Stay determined and keep pushing, Nomad, as well as Shockwave. One of you guys is gonna get the sub 7 and you earned it!!
Nomad's story is really reminding me of Matthias Rustemeyer's quest for 32/32, and how he got to 31/32 so many times. Hopefully this story has a happier ending
Hm. Yes. Those are words I know. I know all about the game of the bat and the ball, yes. Ok, but seriously, am I the only one feeling like they talk a language other than English when anyone start speaking about baseball?
Damn, I sure hope Nomad gets himself a world record one day. To consistently be so close to the top for so long, to miss out on a new world record by mere hours, but to never quite reach it, is a heartbreaking thing for anyone.
So I've rewatched this video a lot in four months. Probably 10+ times like all of the other summoningsalt videos. But it just now occured to me how much correct baseball terminology is in it. Like everything from an "Eephus pitch" to an immaculate inning, literally every opportunity to talk about baseball the terminology and references are on point! I played ball for most of my life, and either so has Summoning, or he put in a ton of effort into this video that is being glossed over. Really appreciate the extra details!
I wanted to chime in here and give kudos on the terminology as well, and mention that in real golf a similar rule exists as to what the community came up with. The ball must remain in the hole to be considered holed even if it's already hit the bottom of the cup on a bounce. Also, if the ball is trapped between the pin and the lip of the cup, it is not considered holed unless a portion of the ball is below the level of the green. Otherwise, you have to pull the pin to see if the ball will fall in or stay on the edge of the cup.
it became obvious to me when watching the donkey kong 64 video he was into baseball. He mentioned what other big events happened in 2007? Obama being elected and the yankees winning the world series.
No doubt, Shockwave's insane record is a big part of why Nomad's acknowledgement in this video was done the way it was. He deserves to be acknowledged for what he's done yet may never get the WR.
for anyone wondering, the current record is a 7.00.700 by Shockwave. lowest by an active runner is a 7.16.517 by RuinerRyan, and he's determined to get sub 7
10:50 The moment the somewhat mysterious music kicks in while Salt explains the 1.00/1.01 difference gives me this feeling I can’t describe. It’s an amazing combo of editing and storytelling about a game we all grew up with but had no idea there was any difference. Felt almost eerie to me, and I love it
one of the things i like about how these videos are presented is that when you do a “he had to land this shot or make this lap or whatever”, it really could go either way. you don’t only focus on the successes. stops it from ever feeling stale or predictable
It really feels like we Canadians are just perpetually cursed by some external unseen force :( really sad ending but SS's encouragement is definitely a positive spin to it, great way for him to end the video!

Ah... just got to the part where he talks about how rare version 1.00 of Wii Sports is. I was gifted my Wii console the Christmas after launch, but a few years ago when a cousin and I tried to play the copy of Wii Sports it came with, the Wii U wouldn't recognize it. :( Knowing that it's of value for a speedrunning community makes it even more of a bummer.
Honestly 1.00 shouldn't be allowed. Alternatively, everyone playing on 1.01 should just have the 11 seconds lost in baseball subtracted from their end time. It's pretty ridiculous that people competing to be the most skilled in the world have to hunt for a rare copy of the game to give them an unfair advantage.
Stumbled across this video for the first time, thought I'd have a look at where everything's at now.... as of TODAY, 31/12/2023, RyMacG4 has set the first WR in over a year, with the first sub-7 run. Absolutely crazy timing.
Summoning salt videos are honestly amazing for putting on while you fall asleep. They're just calming in a wierd way that always knocks me out in minutes
Honestly I just feel bad for Nomad Having world record sniped not once but 7? times, it happens in speedrunning more often than you think and it's just heartbreaking that some runners give up after they have been so close but never had the skill to get it across the gap. Nomad, you're amazing and just like all the other runners like you I believe in you, you can do it.
It mayyyyy have actually been 10 but the WR saves were so minimal they weren't mentioned 😬 I honestly think Emoad deserves the record, but I also want to keep pushing my own time down for personal improvement, but it's inevitable he will get it
@@Aenorial Yeah I hope he gets all, not to embarrass the community but to just reach the end and prove just how good he is and how much he loves the game.
@@ShockwaveTLS That’s understandable. Best wishes for world record you’re absolutely insane at the game. I’m pretty sure it’s 4 am where you live so get some rest dude
40:18 I can't believe I actually said "No!" out loud as soon as I heard "had it not been for..." Getting emotionally invested in the story of a speedrunner is something I never thought I'd ever do but here we are
That's what Salt does. In his core, he's a great storyteller that gets you to care. The great editing, music, subjects and everything else is ancillary compared to this main thing. The quest to beat Matt Turk and the Mario Kart 64 Mattias videos are the best examples of making me care.
Agreed, getting emotionally invested is a strange sensation. Right at 43:20 I literally was like "Oh NO!" loud enough that people came in from the other room to figure out what I was so upset about.
It's hard to not root for Nomad after watching this. I really hope he achieves his 6:xx run and I'm already looking forward to when Salt revisits this game in a year or 2 and to see Nomad sitting on top with an untouchable record. Good Luck Sir. Edit: I saw this video in my suggested and I remembered Nomad and his struggle. As of Jan 11, 2022 Nomad sits in 1st with a 7m 02s 067ms and Shockwave is right behind him with the time stated at 44:02. Congrats Nomad, you finally got your record. Keep pushing.
That was a very strong ending. It took me completely by surprise. It's really the stuff that makes one think, and quite the bold storytelling decision too. Keeping up the insane quality aren't we?
But legit though, and.. I'm just an outsider in this field of gaming, as summoning salt is legit my only real, expertly informed and beautifully put together TH-camrs that give me a look into this culture but from what I DO see? Yeah their are rivalries but unlike lot of other toxic fields of play, I've noticed that the community behind speed runs are in the end, just a collective to just.. break the damn game as one ❤️🤟
Mark Burhle threw a perfect game, won a World Series game as a starter and reliever and consistently played the game faster than anyone else has done in my lifetime. He really does belong in the HOF.
In my opinion, the baseball hall of fame has become somewhat of a joke for how smugly exclusive it is. It’s like some voters get off on refusing to admit anyone. There a voters who literally make of point of voting for no one every single year.
So when Mark Burhle throws a perfect game, he "plays faster than anyone else" and "belongs in the Hall of Fame," but when *I* do it, I'm "wasting everyone's efforts" and "no longer welcome on the team"
I can’t believe the hope and excitement I felt watching that last run from Nomad. You would have thought I was a lifelong fan of his rooting for him to win the Super Bowl. Great video as always! One day Nomad!!!
Really hope Nomad sees this and feels encouraged. Rooting for u king. Also damn these videos make me tear up. The passion and effort put into these games is pretty beautiful
I've been working on a project that is completely time and energy consuming. I spend most days trapped in my den working on my craft. When i watch your videos it reminds me that there are people out there putting in the same amount of work towards their own passion. This gives me relief for some reason. I love your videos. Keep it up brother.
4:40 demonstrates how truly special the world of speedrunning is as there's a drive into deep left field by Nate9000 and that'll be a homerun. And so that'll make it a 5-0 ballgame. I don't know if I'll be putting on this headset again. Whether that be for the Reds or my bosses at FOX.
36:10 "He accidentally threw an immaculate inning" is not a sentence I ever thought I would hear lmao For those who don't know much about baseball, an immaculate inning is one of the most impressive feats a pitcher, or really any player, can achieve. In MLB, it's about 4x less common than a no-hitter.
it's pretty weird they never separated the two versions into two different categories, it seems kind of unfair to international speedrunners to put a cost barrier like that on competing in such an otherwise easy to find game
i remember feeling amazing beating elisa for the first time in tennis and then accidentally deleting the data by accident because i didn't have a Mii, hopefully watching people be better at the game at me will help me feel better. keep up the good work man, your videos are always a delight :)
I'm not sure how to explain this well, but one of the things you do really well in your videos is establishing how important a specific thing in a run is going to be, without giving away ahead of time whether or not it works out, and then letting us see how it goes. And every time you say something like "it all came down to this one crucial moment..." and I still have no idea whether it's going to work out or not. That's a really good skill as a storyteller. It makes your videos really suspenseful and enjoyable.
Why did I tear up at the end? You’re such a damned good storyteller. Had no clue if that shot would go, and we’d celebrate… or if it would miss and we’d be sad. But you wrapped it up perfectly. Well done.
@@colin7244 its pretty literal a phrase. its taking something old and using it after not doing so for a while. usually dust collects on it, so you blow/wipe the dust off. youre dusting off the object. i hope that explained it well.
You know you’re gonna have a good day when Summoning Salt uploads. Like the WSR Golf video, I had no idea this was spedrun lol. They didn’t have to do Emoad like this lmao, really hope he gets a WR soon, love this video :)
Sadly, Nomad has yet to get a sub 6. In fact, 12 days before writing this, a man named Ryan was the first. A year before him, a 7 flat by shockwave. Nomad hasn't set a new PB in 2 years, and i believe he quit.
Both myself and Wave have quit all sports in 2023. Wave has now focused on putting out Wii series content and I have focused on other speedrunning/irl goals
I don’t know how this ended up in my recommended but holy hell what an analysis what a history of speed running in wii sports. The use of drama throughout this is exceptional and makes me appreciate the effort put into this not only by you but the speed runners themselves. What an unreal video love this man.
I cannot express how much I love this channel, this is one of the most purely good channels on TH-cam. Every video is just so well edited and well narrated, every video that comes out fills me with happiness. Thank you, Summoning Salt.
The ending quote deadass made me shed a tear because if there’s anything these speed docs on TH-cam have taught me is just that, it’s not about the world records it’s about the journey to get there and the STORY of the player. Bravo for always shedding a light on players who grinded but never would’ve gotten recognized if it wasn’t for you.
I literally stopped everything I was doing to see if that sub 7 putt would go in. Then felt crushed when I saw those white pixels roll left. Good video as usual.
Hi Nate, you really got me into running this game back then. I was the WR after your two. Thanks for inspiring me to try it out! It’s nice to see you here!
Salt throwing around actual sports knowledge threw me for a second - I basically never watch videos where anyone knows about sports (because I don't either), so it caught me off guard lol
That ending was spectacular, I didn't see it coming and I never thought I'd get that emotional over a putt. I remember when I ran XC in school, the coach said that everyone on the team was important. Even if you were the 15th fastest runner on the team, the 16th fastest runner was pushing you to keep your spot, and you were pushing number 14 to keep going fast enough to hold theirs. Big ups to all the unsung heroes that don't get the WRs but keep pushing the scene to its best form. Also I really hope Nomad gets that sub-7 someday. We're all rooting for ya bud.
@@aggrogator4045 no. Depending on the school, an xc team can have like 50 runners. At my school my sophomore year of high school, our 14th guy probably ran like 17:40 in the 5k. So not bad by any means lmao
I don't know what's crazier, the fact that the absence of the baseball opening sequence was treated as a massive cinematic twist, or the fact that it actually is that to most people including myself
If nomad gets his payday it’ll be a huge inspiration to me like seriously. That amount of second places is a stake right through the chest. Never having a win under your belt. And after every loss you say “time to go back to the drawing board” but deep down you lose a little bit of hope after so many failed attempts. Just to keep trying and trying and not succeeding, it can make you lose passion. Nomad getting this record would most definitely be a very empowering story for me
To help mitigate the 1.00 and 1.01 difference, would it be possible to just deduct the baseball intro cutscene time from 1.01 runs? It wouldn't be perfect, since groundouts would still be a bit too random, but it seems it would even the playing field a bit and not require a rare version of the game for optimal play. Unless there is some other difference that I am not considering between the two versions.
Watching this 6 months after, Shockwave holds it at a 7:00:300, A 7 flat, so incredibly close to breaking the barrier, but neither him nor Nomad seem to be focusing on the record, and I'm unsure if the 6 minute barrier will ever be broken
I'm surprised that those on 1.01 couldn't just subtract the time it takes for the baseball animation to play. Feel like that would help even the playing field and ease the stress copies of 1.00 would have(unless they emulate, but I don't think speedrunners do that, more so out of purity reasons.) An example of this I can think of is Mario kart speedrunners having time conversion for pal and ntc since they're the same game, just with different time effects
Without an extensive review of the source code, you can't know for sure that the baseball animation is the ONLY thing that impacts the times between v1.00 and v1.01. Anyway, records can be sorted by version number, so its not like 1.01 owners go without proper recognition.
It's harder to do it because it's not a static amount of time. You can ballpark it, but there's ever small variation because the number of throwing animations isn't the same every game. With MK it's easier because it's just a straight 25-30 frame conversion.
Yep, I am suprised they didn´t substract / add the time to the runs to make it even or just outright ban 1.00 for speedrunning. I am just really used communities banning certain copies of a game, due to rarity, for example many of the iQue copies of games that are much faster than other version. Also the fact that the Wii is a region locked console either requires you to hack your non-american Wii or you buy an american Wii + the 1.00 version on top. I don´t think it´s good for integrity.
It's really cool that there's a speedrun pentathlon. Also, Summoning Salt seems like someone who knows his baseball. Imagine him, Foolish Baseball, and (impossibly) Jon Bois doing a baseball documentary. That would be the holy grail of sports videos.
That ending is fantastic. The record sur is important but the path to get there comes from competition. There wouldn't be so insane world records if not for the unsung heroes that kept pushing and made the WR holder push even harder. Thanks for a great video again Salt o/
When your halfway through the video and realize the dates are just a few weeks ago, and not 5 to 8 years ago. Nomad's gonna get that 6:xx for sure. Only problem is that Shockwave will have done it 3 minutes sooner. Both players deserve a lot of props, and your documenting skills are otherworldly too.
Oh my God, as a baseball fan I love all the references you put in the video. To see you combine two of my favorite things into one piece of media is so cool. Good to see foolish baseball get some recognition as well

I love Summoning Salt going “by the way I’m a big baseball fan” without saying it.
@Jake Condon we need the Foolish baseball, Summoning Salt, and Jon Bois collab
Was thinking the same thing! I think it’s cool that he seems to be an avid baseball fan
"Makes Barry Zito look like Brusdar Graterol" my ears perked up, love the baseball knowledge flex.
Thought the same thing! Like you even more now summoning salt
Honestly i have never watched a single inning of baseball, but i still find Foolish Bailey awesome.
Summoning Salt is really good at storytelling. I started this video with a bemused "competitive Wii Sports? Haha, sure. How does _that_ work?" mood and I ended the video with a heartbroken "sub-7 minutes was there, it was possible, it was *real* for a fleeting moment..."
I appreciate the choice to end on a hopeful note, reiterating that a pace like that has been seen before, and will be seen again. Normally in these kind of speedrunning analysis videos, you only see the one successful run, and don't see the hundreds of failed attempts it took to get to that point. And putting the spotlight on the struggle (instead of the triumph) makes the story feel more relatable, more human.
Talk about PS1 speedruns, please.
A phrase I never thought I'd hear: "he accidentally threw an immaculate inning"
@@bendubz9000 watching summoning salt's video on that and him missing 32/32 by like 3 frames on the final corner was genuinely heartbreaking

@@SummoningSalt Wummoning Walt
@@SummoningSaltonce you started talking about graterol, manfred and buerle i know u were a bb fan lmao. good shit

Getting emotionally invested in the story of a speedrunner is something I never thought I'd ever do but here we are
That's what Salt does. In his core, he's a great storyteller that gets you to care. The great editing, music, subjects and everything else is ancillary compared to this main thing. The quest to beat Matt Turk and the Mario Kart 64 Mattias videos are the best examples of making me care.

Speed running a game based mostly on imprecise motion controls is an interesting concept for sure
Unless there is some other difference that I am not considering between the two versions.
i thought exactly the same, isnt it the obvious thing to do? because the time difference is always the same
Agreed. I know other game speedrun communities have normalization techniques similar to that for differing game versions.

or split them into two categories
I was thinking too you could cut out the cutscene of the out being thrown to first too. If it has a predictable length.
@@ryjelsum "Ballpark" nice
I think it's unreasonable to do that because you'd also need to subtract time for every out you get since an animation unique to 1.01 plays.
I would love that so much, he even knew who Barry Zito was it's like two of my favorite things combined into one dhjskhsjk
i never thought summoning salt and foolish baseball would have their paths cross. i am so glad they did though.

I can’t believe I sat through 44 minutes of you talking about wii sports speedruns but it was so interesting. Amazing video bro!
ShockwaveTLS is a jerk, period. I would honestly like to see the community take their ball and go home if he doesn't let Nomad get the record again.
Oh my God, as a baseball fan I love all the references you put in the video. To see you combine two of my favorite things into one piece of media is so cool. Good to see foolish baseball get some recognition as well
You are the only speed run reviewer like this I'm seriously considering helping financially.
