Premier League Ref Anthony Taylor: Dealing with Mistakes, VAR and Christian Eriksen collapse | E106

  • Brand new episode with England's professional referee Anthony Taylor ⚽️👏
Anthony has refereed over 400 games in his career, including the #PremierLeague and #Fifa refereeing European and international matches ⚽️
He is also the first man to referee a second FA Cup final since 1901 🤯
Referees are notoriously disliked in the world of football, as their decisions cannot please both teams - resulting in referees having a lot of hate speech and threats directed at them from football fans, forgetting that referees are human too.
The world of football has allowed placing blame for a team's loss on the referee, instead of on the actual players for far too long 🙅
Anthony speaks to Jake and Damian about what it takes to be a referee of the biggest football games in the world and "being human" 🙌

Jake is spot on with the observation that greater communication with officals will be a benefit to them as well as fans. My uncle was a Football League referee before the dyas of the Premier League, and I often went with him to games. The discussions we had in the car on the way home were eye opening for me, and sometimes for him, as decisions he took from his viewing angle were often very different to what I expected him to give. "What you didn't see from up there..." was a phrase he often used!

Refs make less mistakes than players, way less. Var has shown you can look at an incident from 5 or 6 camera angles, replay the incident in super slo Mo, backwards and forwards and still not come to a majority decision after 5 mins. Refs have a split second and only one angle to make their decision. Add into that most players will cheat to deceive the ref, then the ref has got the most difficult job on the pitch. Seeing things from another's point of view makes everybody's lives easier.

The camera can sometimes lie. I've watched incidents from one angle and come to one decision and then look at another angle and come to another decision. I've disagreed with friends when watching the same piece of action. Then when you bring in the subject of intention that further makes a decision more difficult.

Anthony Taylor, I found this so useful for a new referee. I also can relate to a couple of your examples as when people jump in the penalty box from a corner it just look likes arms, so the best position is crucial.
I think referring is a underrated job but a very enjoyable one, in my opinion (I know I have a long way to go) if a ref can survive Grassroots then I believe they can survive anything.

All you see from the comments is the fact that Taylor is such a bad referee. All the time when I get home back from watching a game that AT refed i always watch the games back. All the time when he refs a big final e.g, FA cup final back in 2017 when he allowed the Sanches goal to stand after it was blatantly a hand ball. People to need to sign a petition to get him off his bike and get him sacked. Worst ref ever

Some of the nonsense written about footballers and referees in football is crazy. It's a sport, end of. Grow up and stop talking about hate for a game of football.
Imagine someone walking upto you at work and spouting vile and violence because you got something wrong.

Anthony Taylor’s most unfair decision making on the biggest stage of 2022. Plus, he can’t even count time right at the end of the game. He should’ve gave 10 minutes + 2-3 more minutes at the end of the game instead. He pointed that a corner, then made the controversial call. How nonsense is that? Even though they(fifa’s referees)fixed the problem which is giving extra time for this 2022. Still not giving a chance to players. You DON’T deserve it to be there. How do you make the decision right then he’s gotta go. Please, somebody fire him! He definitely took very personal way. He’s obviously an Asian hater, just you know. Hate to bring this race card but he’s definitely like that between Son and him. Here we go again. Big big big mistake man. Time to loose your job.

This is the only English referee that should be in every game. No wonder he is the only one that get invited to European completion and world cups.

Ferguson made criticising refs an art. Most managers blame refs for their own inadequacies. And people fall for it every time. It gets tiresome.
People prefer to forget refs are humans to. If you're looking for a scapegoat there's something wrong with you.

Well they should start to ref better , Taylor is a disgrace of a ref . He’s constantly causing controversy and is always in the spotlight . That’s not good refereeing

We don't need Fergie or Carra's comments about blaming refs, we can see it with our own eyes when someone is incompetent at his job, and he definitely fits that bill!

Great interview from one of Europe’s best referees. Shame many of the viewers who took time to comment didn’t actually take in the conversation and resorted straight to abuse. If you think you can do better we’d be happy to cover the cost of a referee course for you and follow you for your first few matches. See if you can do better?
