    This video just shows how incredibly punctual, calm, professional and thick skinned Howard Webb and mirrors exactly why he went to the very top his profession. It also shows how much of narrow minded weasel Savage is and why his career granted a very mere mediocre career at best, oath of a man

    Savage is seeing the giving of cards purely as punishment as opposed to thinking about how refs want to manage the game. Webb is coming from the perspective of not wanting to book players unless it's necessary, whereas Savage is so lacking in fair play spirit that he sees fouling as a tactic

    I like Webb alot more now, every time he speaks he makes alot of sense to me. I totally understand the yellow card situation and I agree with it. Savage is being dumb. if he "smashes" Ince in the first, it's a yellow regardless. Webb is talking judgement calls.

    This is an interesting topic. Just wish Robbie Savage would shut up and stop interrupting so we could hear what Howard Webb had to say about it, because that's what's interesting. We've heard former players and pundits talk about stuff like this for years but it's quite rare, at least where I'm from, to hear what actual referees think about stuff like this.

    Webb explains the difficult situation refs are often in really well here, the grassroots game is losing refs all the time because they have to deal with jumped up Sunday morning manager dads on the sidelines and 14 year olds on the pitch who follow the example. What annoys me is the lack of consistency in referee decisions. I've seen plenty of games when a player commits a foul in the middle of the pitch and gets booked. Then a few minutes later a player on the opposition team will commit a similar foul in a similar area and get away with it. Countless times.

    • @wazztie1690
      @wazztie1690 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Probably because the referee has a different angle /view on each challenge, and sees one as reckless and one as careless, so one a yellow, one just a free kick.

    Maybe savage needs to actually referee a game himself and see the difference it makes to just give a warning to then have the behaviour stop or pull a yellow straight out to then have the players firstly annoyed and then EVERY similar infringement must be a yellow card. Before he argues with a world class referee he should pull on a referee shirt and give it a go. Much like me arguing with a world class coach about his coaching technique when I have never coached a game before

    As one of the tweets that appears on screen says - it's not the referees job to 'manage' a game, they are there to apply the laws of the game from the first minute to the last, end of. Anything else, and the term 'game management' sounds extremely like trying to interfere with the result to me.

    Referees can be so inconsistent, yes, so can players, those dodgy passes, that lead to a goal or a goal scoring opportunity, or putting a team mate in a situation where they feel they have to put a tackle in that can potentially get them a yellow.
    But it's all about the ref being inconsistent.

  • @theviewer5262
    @theviewer5262 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Howard Webb is right that the skill of a referee is in managing the game, but how rarely does it happen that they do manage the game correctly today? It doesn’t happen, with VAR and with the attitude of the English referees at the moment there isn’t any managing going on. The game is a complete farce in terms of officiating at the moment and the current group of referees in England can’t control a game of football. Oliver, Dean, Mason, Moss, Coote etc. - they’re incapable of showing the emotional flexibility to manage a game of football. They’re too arrogant and rigid in their thinking to control the game - football is in a real state in terms of officiating at the moment.
    Webb makes some good comments on bookings etc. but there are problems with his view on them also. I’ve always found that the referees don’t see the bigger picture with bookings; they should know who will face a ban if booked, the state of league positions, conditions of play etc. Recently John Egan was a booking away from suspension prior to Sheffield United playing Manchester United away the next game, with around 5 minutes to go and 3-1 down he was booked for winning the ball. It wasn’t a foul and the referee got it wrong, but he booked the player. The game was finished and the foul given wasn’t correct, but the referee gave a booking. That’s a huge error which loses all control of a game - every Sheffield United player at that point is angry and frustrated for the remaining 5 minutes of a game which is already finished, the coaching staff is livid and most irritating of all - the referee could not have been sure it was a booking. The replay showed it was a fair tackle and so the referee could not be sure that it ought to be a booking; he wanted to slow the game down and keep the players from making strong challenges with the game about to finish - he achieved the opposite. If he had known Egan would miss the next game he would likely have chose not to book the player when it wasn’t a challenge worthy of a booking. Decisions like that are wrong and unfair because the referee is trying to manage a one off game without any knowledge of the greater consequence of his decision/s. Thankfully Sheffield United actually won the game at Manchester United without their best player, but the issue remains in the referee’s thinking.

  • @rubendenker
    @rubendenker 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I only watched 4 minutes then I had to puke. It should be the player's responsibility to not get red carded and hurt his own team. The rules are pretty bad about what exactly is a yellow card and what is not but the same foul should be the same punishment trough the whole game.
