Yeah, Leaf/Green really Got screwed by not appearing in the original games: she never appears in future main games because...they mainly reference the Gen 1 games specifically - not the Gen 3 remakes where she appears (with let's go being a weird exception) and at this point, she is unlikely to appear in the anime, since she would be hard to fit and the spot she could have gotten in the past are now being filled by other characters, like Misty. I think the worst thing is that now in the games she really feels awkward as part of the Kanto trio: Red and Blue have such an incredibly well-established rivalry/dynamic in the games that her presence can feel a bit out of place to some imho . Also, I feel like that Kris isn't really in a better position imho: yes, she got to appear in some anime specials, but she and Lyra are just straight up considered different characters at this point and more people remember the latter due to both the remakes giving her an NPC role and the main anime series giving her some episodes as well, while Kris will probably remain in the dust, except for spin-offs like Masters. I hope this comment doesn't seem too annoying or anything like that and I apologize in case I seem to have misunderstood something, but I wanted to throw out my thoughts about Leaf, since I hold an important spot for her due to LG/FR being one of the first videogames I've played. :x
Hence why I'm getting sick at how majority of anime / manga would have characters that can tie into things better than others, and then gets screwed over because the author, animators are like " ah.. Who are they? " or " ah.. I'm focusing on mc. I have no time for side characters ". A MAJOR FLAW IN JAPAN ITSELF. Green / Leaf at this point is being treated like an unloved Luigi and it shows why.. The only way to give Green an uproar is for majority of the fans to yell it out and say to Nintendo. " Hey we love Green. Please tell Pokemon to make her part of the story. " You go for the boss. You can ask the creator of Pokemon but I feel they be "ah. " and then forget.. Atleast the Boss be yelling " MAKE GREEN PART OF THE STORY OR NO DEAL. " That alone would rattle Gamefreak to do something.
It would been better if Green was integrated in Pokemon Blue. Let's say, if you buy Pokemon Red, you play as Red, whereas if you buy Pokemon Blue, you play as Green.
You think it would be too awkward to use the "NEW character that WAS always there" trope in the anime? Like they are bringing Blue/Gary/Shigeru in the next weeks so she just appears nonchalantly with him and when Red/Ash/Satoshi asks about, they present her as one of the Champion of the Indigo League? The same tournament Gary ranked 32nd, Ash ranked 16th and ???/Hiroshi/Ritchie ranked 8th... and the champion was just a shadow... Just checked Bulbapedia for EP80 and the champion seems a lot like a boy... but there is a girl like silhouette in the podium... In competitions the 3rd place frequently stands at the left side of the first... So my point still stands... kinda... There is a brief mention that the trainers that got Charmander and Bulbasaur as starters did not succeed as Pokemon trainers though (EP65)... Although could be a case that she just stole one of them making a parallel to her manga counterpart? Or rescued it for the sake of politic correctness... Ash keeps rescuing abandoned Pokemon too... Then there could be a fake montage of all the times she almost had a chance to fight Ash but destiny kept getting in the way... Bonus points if Pikachu recognizes her but Ash doesn't because he is this much absent minded... There's the meme that she is the girl Pikachu "assaults" in the first opening theme too... Até mais ver mr. Poneis Truth be told the Pokemon Company misses lots of opportunities using excuses like keeping the continuity, thinking only in the current target audience, playing safe that it peeves me sometimes... Mainly now that Sword and Shield sales became solid proof that they became too big to fail...
Green in Let's Go is not based on the manga. She's based on Green as seen in the unused Sugimori art for R/B/G and as the female player character in FR/LG (yes, they are the same character, there's no reason to call her "Leaf"). She's wearing an adapted version of her outfit from the concept art to match Red and Blue wearing outfits from that era. They added the cyan to her shirt to indicates it's the same character from FR/LG. This is our first time seeing her presented as a character in the games and I can't be pleased enough. It's just a shame she's underutilized in it.
She also wore said outfit in the manga and she rocks it.. she wore this outfit to show her new found confidence and even more importantly to be looking forward to the reunion of her family.
TBF Leaf is also an official name for her, it's what Masters and merchandise goes with, even in Japan, so both are fine It's still supposed to be the same general character I feel though, not a recursive adaptation of manga Green
In G/S/C green same outfit and her personality went to the Indigo Plateu and take Red's place as Champion, but Lance put her in the final elite four place since she lost to him. She Cheated her way to become the Champion and that's why Lance take the Champion place. Later on she still giult tripping many trainers before facing lance and changed the elite four systems of the members that are weak against to. Green/Blue JP qualifies as a main Villain of the Gen II games. Loves Silver to be his lover. Green/Blue JP/Terrya/Karen is Sexaully offended to rape or kill Silver.
I'd say Leaf and Green in the games are the same character, the main confusion in this case was kind of the fandom's and Bulbapedia's fault. When FRLG were released in 2004, the female character didn't have a confirmed official name; the game provided you with some optional names, two of them being Green and Leaf. Many called her Green since we were familiar with Red's and Blue's names, though a large portion of the fanbase latched onto the name Leaf. Similarly, there were people who called FRLG's Red "Fire", and for HGSS many called Lyra "Soul" though those fan names haven't stuck around as much as "Leaf" did. At some point in 2005, Bulbapedia made the main name for her article "Leaf" even though it wasn't official, which really helped introduce people to that name instead of Green. The first time the name "Leaf" was used somewhat officially was about 15 years later in the 2019 spin-off mobile game Pokémon Masters EX made by DeNA Co. thanks to how well known the fan name was at that point, which contradicted how Game Freak called her Green in the 2018 Let's Go Pikachu. We can see that the Pokémon Company also had her called Green in the 2021 Pokémon Evolutions series. On the point about her outfit difference, in FRLG it was just redesigned to match the newer style they settled on, then they changed it in Let's Go Pikachu to call back to the RGBY concept art style just like what was done for Red and Blue. Similarly, when the manga entered the FRLG series, manga Green switched over to wearing the FRLG outfit and has been ever since so there is an understanding in the manga that the characters are the same. On the difference between game Green/Leaf's and manga Green's personalities, it's just a situation of cross media differences; just like how Red in the manga is a different person from Red in the games. The people and events of the manga are generally treated by the Pokémon Company as part of their own world based on the games yet distinct in many ways, so similarly manga Green can be seen as a different person from game Green/Leaf. The best way to understand how the Pokémon Company views game Green/Leaf's character is probably by watching Pokémon Evolutions Ep. 8 which ties in with that surprise meeting in Let's Go Pikachu. It would be nice if Game Freak went on to make game Green/Leaf a more complex character like manga Green, though I'm somehow unsure if they'd be able to manage it given their track record. TL;DR: In-game Green being known by the unofficial name Leaf by so many people is mostly Bulbapedia's fault. The reason why in-game Green and manga Green are so different is because the games and mangas are treated as two different canons by the Pokémon Company. I wish Green would show up more often in the games too.
Yeah this makes sense. Ignoring the name aspect, as I'm one of those that have just gone with Leaf all these years (but i also actively call Blue "Gary" because i genuinely think the "just name them after a game version" scheme was always stupid with a few exceptions and I'm glad they got smarter about it and just pick actual names), I was never all that confused by it because i never consider the manga characters the same as the games anyway. It's just like the anime, there's no reason to assume they overlap, and especially for someone like Leaf/Green who prior to the let's go appearance had NO game characterization as per the job description as a player character, the depiction in Let's Go can simply be seen as establishing one for her finally, just how Red went from no personality to "serious, driven, man of no words" purely because of the Gen 2 depiction. It's good you brought up the TH-cam Pokemon specials as well, as these are tge exceptions to other multimedia in the series, being direct adaptations of various game events, rather than telling their own stories, this further simply cements the personality they wanna give Leaf/Green in the games specifically. Not a fumbling of her manga character
Well there are some thing that made people see leaf and green being 2 separate person like how leaf is seem with a venusaur and green is see with a blastoise and how leaf head cannon character is silent while green talk a lot and is more friendly Yes pokemon master EX had leaf character being like green but is not made by GAME FREAK so people still see leaf character as silent and cold as to being red female conterpart
Her manga appearance really made me love this character. It's really unfortunate that she gets overlooked, but her appearance in LGPE did make me really happy even if I thought it was rather weak.
Her Manga isn't great still.... It still makes you disliked her because she stole things, conned people and made red buy useless Items.... Then you had someone like Yellow who isn't even a Girl but an intersexual blond that seems to have stolen Green/Blues glory 2 things I ask. I remember picking her as my character for Pokemon LeafGreen, and back when Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Pokemon HeartGold & SoulSilver were coming out, I was hoping we'd see her in those games, and was a bit disappointed when neither didn't happen. (at least Ultimate fixed that mistake) Anyway, I gotta say, the fact that Green has a Clefable on her team is not only a cute nod to the Manga, but also to the fact that it's pre-evolution, Clefairy, could've been the mascot of the series, sort of making the two counterparts to Red and Pikachu. When she showed up in Let's Go, I assumed her different personality is what they wanted Game Universe Green to be, but then we have her appearance in Pokemon Masters and she appears to have yet another different personality, so I have no idea. (I haven't actually played Masters, so I could be wrong on this) Speaking of Masters, her being associated with Venusaur is probably due to the fact that Red nowadays is associated with Charizard. (and by extension, Blue with Blastoise) Her being associated with Blastoise during Let's Go was probably more of a case a callback to that old artwork of her with Red and Blue. (something I don't particularly mind, as I associate Classic Red with Venusaur and Modern Red with Charizard)
A character that's been constantly flip flopped, never has any solid interpretation, and is randomly thrown about the games as a whole regardless of context, just to appeal to fanservice? Kinda speaks for most of the series to be honest. I know you're probably tired of me leaving critical comments on each of your videos (lol), but it really does seem (and you implicitly say) that Leaf/Green's poor handling is a direct result of Game Freak being either unable or unwilling to tell a proper story (I'm partly a timeline theorist and holy shit they fucked up big time). Characters constantly get underdeveloped, never reappear outside of a few cameos that either ruin or destabilize the context of whatever they appear in, and are pushed to the wayside of stuff they always do because nostalgia. The fact that we still don't really know what this character is _named_ speaks for itself, truth be told. Now I don't consider this to be inherently bad, as saddling a bunch of emotional character development leads to the opposite problem where any callbacks and callfronts need to appropriate their source carefully as to not piss off fans familiar with the original (like those who read the manga and saw Green's appearance in Let's Go!). But it's such a darn shame that most of Pokemon's characters get sidelined because the series so religiously adheres to its formula (I personally think Pokemon has some of the best designs of any RPG......I just really don't like standard JRPG character design). The creatures themselves usually don't have this problem, since you actually use them. And while Masters is a great step in that regard, it's ultimately a short changed attempt when that character never had an identity to begin with. I'm still miffed they had the audacity to put Meltan in an entirely separate category in HOME, but maybe apathy and never answering the important questions is the way forward. Can't say that leaves Leaf/Green's prospects high, lemme tell you.
I feel like he didnt fully read the manga because most of the pokemon each of the red blue and green had were references to the manga, and not only that, Green from the manga wasnt an outright asshole, i dont get why it would be out of character for her to just give you the mega stones

I personally believe that Leaf/Green/name is really underrated too. No signs of being in Alola despite that she is technicly one of the rivals. A bunch of people discussed on WHY she wasn't in SM, but that is still a mystery. Btw loved STEVEN FUCKING STONE
the only way i can sort this mess without hurting my head is to treat them as characters from different multiverse, based on their starters: as evidenced by pokemon masters (although sometimes they give trainers pokemon that were never associated with them before): red (game) - charmander blue (game) - squirtle leaf (game) - bulbasaur from the pokemon adventures manga and early ken sugimori art: red (manga/art) - bulbasaur blue (manga/art) - charmander green (manga/art) - squirtle as to why figures like kotobukiya's ARTFX J showed her as leaf but with a squirtle instead of a bulbasaur, i don't take that into account too much since they paired may with a mudkip even though she's traditionally seen with a torchic

I think the reason they went with the name Green instead of Leaf is because Leaf is specifically from FRLG, and they wanted to reference not gen3 but specifically the unused female trainer design from the strategy book. Red and Blue use their original design from the gameboy instead of the gen 3 designs so its a similar idea, and I guess having a name that references gen3 would be weird? idk, add that the confusion abt her not having an official name until Masters I think Leaf and LetsGo!Green are basically the same character and i treat them as such, tho i use the name Leaf more often specially when referring to her as a player character rather than an npc like in lets go
Pokemon Journeys is probably the last opportunity for her debut in media, which I doubt it because the new anime is so busy with even MORE of anime-original characters instead of so-long forgotten game-based characters... so many good opportunities being wasted
This was actually a really good video to discover. I was just thinking about Kris and Layra and how they were so different despite being the same character in the manga. I then remembered Leaf and decided to look up her appearances. I knew that she appeared in Let's Go, but I was confused when nothing came up. This really bugged and thank you for taking all the thoughts that have been bugging me and putting them into video format.
If they ever drop the remake gimmick and go for a straight up sequel set in Kanto, (set after Gold and Sliver), it be pretty neat if Green/Leaf was the Champion. Sounds like I need to check out that Manga

bit late to this vid but Leaf/Green are meant to be the same in the games I believe. if you look at Greens outfit in Let's Go, she's wearing her blue top (as Leaf) underneath her dress. it was meant to reference both but the name Leaf was used just for LEAF Green. her canon name is Green. that's my take anyway.
I think I remember some video explaining in-game evidence in Let's Go Pikachu / Let's Go Eevee which said that these Game's interpretation of "Green" was made artificially by the same blokes who made Mewtwo. Apparently Blane acknowledges that you've seen her or something like that. edit: Also Leaf using an Eevee might be because the Female player trainer in Let's Go Pikachu / Let's Go Eevee is more commonly associated with Eevee in official art & stuff and they probably wouldn't bother putting characters from a game like that in Masters.
To me, the heros edition of her is how I most empathize with her, since when I played LG, I had the same team as her. I never saw her as a character like Blue and Red, to me Leaf was always meant to be a blank slave, so everytime she showed up, I was more happy to see her as a Easter egg than to see her as a character. I guess what I am trying to say is that, I never cared for her as a character, and I guess people in game freak didn't either
Leaf deserved a better stage. There is a story about her on Wikipedia, manga reference...being kidnapped and she escaped, survived and captured Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres to battle and survive. She wasn't previliged like the other Pokemon protagonists in a safe environment. She grew up in a hostile environment and outranked her peers.
Actually, I think those aren't all the same character. The one you see in Let's Go is based on a version from the Japanese-exclusive anime that never got American localization. Supposedly, she's Mr. Fuji's daughter who died and why he was working on cloning science to revive her, Team Rocket caught wind and decided to bankroll it on the condition he try to clone Mew for them also. In the original Japanese version of the 1st movie, you see how this played out. You see the "dreams" of the clones as they develop, their consciousnesses joined because of Mewtwo's psychic powers. But one by one, all the clones except Mewtwo become unviable and fail, which makes Mewtwo bitter and explains why he betrays Team Rocket. Green throws Pokéballs at you because since she developed sharing her mindspace with clone Pokémon, she saw the Pokémon as equals and when she saw that people throw balls at them and she didn't really make a distinction between Pokémon and people she saw you the player character as fair game to throw balls at. Game Theory did a whole video about it, watch their explanation.
Good shit man. Very well presented video. It always perplexed me seeing how poorly handled Blue (calling her that, since that's the name I saw when I started reading the manga) by the actual company. It's even weird when you consider how the foundation for her character is literally laid out by Hidenori's mind. Yet, she stayed as a blank slate. I was over the moon seeing her there in LGPE. But then that interaction happened and I was like... What? It's like they literally just put here there for the hell of it. It's honestly a shame. The main audience will never get to bear witness to one of the best characters in the Pokemon world. Although I guess the same can be said for the other manga characters. Oh well, keep up the good work!
People who started out with LGPE would be very confused, people who played FRLG but never read the manga would be confused, and manga readers would also be confused. Well done, Game Freak.
FRLG and Let's Go are both directed by Junichi Masuda, so we can argue that, by his point of view, both characters are the same and the name change is only for marketing reasons (similar to how the Johto male character is named Gold in Gen 2 and Ethan in Gen 4). In fact, I won't be surprised if it turned out that the marketing team named her Gen 3 incarnation "Leaf" just because it was the named commonly used in the fandom, making also Bulbapedia one of those to blame for the "character split".
Wow, I never knew somebody else felt nearly as strongly about this as I do. I don’t get why they just abandoned Leaf over the years, and to make it worse, they introduced Green in the games -and now there’s sometimes more Green fanart being pumped out over Leaf- *eye twitch* Like, there’s just no reason whatever to ignore her character like this. She rightfully deserves to be addressed and show up just as much as any other female protagonist. I hope Green does get added to Pokémon Masters EX though, because seeing her interact with Leaf will be interesting~ That’s part of why I love the Japanese fanbase. They don’t argue over the two “”bring the same character””. They fully understand and accept that the two are different. 9:27 I actually love that they “backtracked” to Leaf. It was about freaking time they gave her what she rightfully deserved.
On the bright side the new Pokémon evolutions anime seems to be having the kanto episode set in cerulean cave, and on the website is shows eight characters with the kanto one being leaf & her Blastoise so maybe we might see something with that hopefully

I agree Leaf/Green was under-utilized, but maybe if she were to make an appearance in 'Origins' or 'Generations' she may have had a voice, and the one actress I have in mind for her is Lara Jill Miller.
I always loved Leaf/Green despite her lack of character development and still waits to this day for it.. She should've been in Pokemon Origins! Oh and in the Arc finale of Pokemon Masters EX, we get to see some personality like she is saying how she Red and blue grew up together yadda yadda

Green is one of my FAVOURITE charachters in the manga. It's sad to see her being overlooked. Also if you haven't read more than to ruby&sapphire, I recommend that you at least read up to emerald. Then you've read the first "segment".
I think it makes perfect sense for Leaf to have a Venosaur since it fits in with the color theme of Red having a Charizard (fire), Blue having a Blaustoise (water) and then Leaf which is Green having a Venosaur (grass). That's probably the logic the Masters team used. I doubt they were thinking about the Adventures manga or the Lets go Pikachu Green character. Also since this video Leaf has been added to the trainer lounge and has some more cute bonding moments. I think that game treated her fairly well and put her right there next to Red and Blue as the OG champions.
The ONLY way i see Red and Green work in the remake is make the part "Fire" and "Leaf" as they names, so that makes then not the SAME character, which explain a LOT...
I think they removed the girl because of technical limitations. As Pokemon was already pushing the Game boy's cartridges to the limit. Apparently Mew was only added because the programmers found a way to save RAM elsewhere. And it wasn't until the higher specced Game boy color that they managed to pull it off.
in the r/b/y manga green was the female protagonest she was a thief and a lier so the all black was to suit her chacter. later in the sieris (i mean 20 books later) she changes her look because she is going to meet her parents for the first time and she made a promise to oak not to steal anymore soooo her entire personalty changed... 'leaf' is green and her frlg model is just updated. red and blue change thier look and yet no one calls them fire or water. use logic people. sidenote: read the manga, its amazing
Ehhhh. I kinda disagree with the whole idea that Kris was "redesigned" into Lyra and that they are the same character. The two are very different visually and do have different names.

They sweech the name as well as they sweech the green (japoneese orriginal first releasted with red...) version of the game for the blue one in the oxcident. And sweech the name to matsh with the miss colour left beind by the hero's rival.
Bloody good this. I had no idea Green from the manga was so wild, definitely quite a daring character for Pokémon from the looks of things but in a fun way. Summat about Leaf always did remain iconic even in the years where she was absent, but now we're definitely in a hot mess. Still, I'll take Let's Go Green over nowt. It's a couple years late, but i think you probably misunderstood the intent of LG Green. This isn't a weird fumble of trying to implement the manga character into the games, as they wouldn't ever do this anyway. Same reason Adventures Red and game Red are practically opposite personalities. Gen 2 onwards, Red in the games is a driven but silent serious guy, now that he's an NPC and allowed to be characterized. This is them simply being very very very late of doing the same to our girl here. In the games before this, she's only been a player character and per the job description, no characterization going on. Dunno why they left her out so much before Let's Go, but now that she's back and an NPC they can simply give her a personality now. We're just witnessing the birth of a game personality for Green, not a fuck up of bringing a manga character to the games. As for the outfit change, well that's pretty much all it amounts to.

I used to think Green and Leaf were the same character simply because I didn't know anything about them other than their names? Then because of Pokémon Masters, I learned that Green and Leaf are different characters (thanks to a certain individual lol), and now I'm learning that Green in LGPE is different to Green in the Pokémon Adventures manga. This video has been a great help explaining this character, and I can only wonder why the hell Leaf/Green2 got treated this way

The masked Man kidnapped Green/Blue as a sacrifice to resurrect Dr Fujis dead daughter but thankfully she and Silver escaped the masked man ....makes sense since Fuji, Pryce and Blaine were part of Team Rocket and the Mewtwo project.... Again it's a super dark theory but this actually was alluded to Yugioh where Seto Kaiba was planned to become Noah's Kaibas new Body Also Green/Blue makes Turquoise... Noah Kaiba and Mr Fujis Daughter have Turquoise and Blue/Greens FRLG dress is turquoise.... Very Dark indeed

In my opinion, I think Green (or Leaf as many fans call her) should've been the final trainer you battle against on Mt. Silver in HeartGold & SoulSilver if you played as Lyra, while you battle Red if you played as Ethan. I think it would've been a very nice touch since you're basically battling against the character you played as in the previous games, but I guess Red was (and still is) much more popular with the fans that GameFreak decided to just have Red as the final battle regardless of which gender you chose. It's a shame and a wasted opportunity really.
I think it should have been that before you get to Red, you encounter a trainer named Green (maybe before the entrance to Mt silver or somewhere inside) that you would have to battle. It would be like a pre-trial to battle Red, and I think it would make sense since Blue is the last kanto gym leader. I forget if you battle the kanto elite 4, but I think it would go Blue, Green, Red and be a nice call back to the (reverse) order the games were released

Remakes are only created to keep the Stories Relevant but there not intended to replace the Existance of the originals, Soul Silver and Heartgold are Remakes of Gold Silver and Crystal, those games gave the option to Visit a Time passed Kanto after Becoming Champion, after Earning all of the Badges in the game the Players can travel to Silver Cave Where they will Battle Red, despite those Remakes being Sequels to Gen 1's Remakes They decided to Just stick with Red even if you Choose the Female, And makes no Suptansial Appearance in it, this is because adding her would just be Too Out of Place and would led to Sepectflication that the Remakes are indeed ex Replacing the Originals, so instead they Ignore Her existence, one Gen later Red, Blue, and the Kanto Gym leaders make reappearance in BW2 as battle Members of the World Tournament, even despite not being Remakes Leaf is Once again Not Present to Again put Remakes Aside Despite that They all appear in there updated Designs that were used in the Remakes, in sun and Moon, Red and Blue Make Appearances as Adults, while still containing design Traits from their Remakes, Leaf Again has no Appearance In Lets Go Pikachu and Eevee a Character who Has the Same Hair and Eyes and Leaf Makes an Appearance, She uses the Name Green Much like her Counterpart from Adventures, But there's No Confirmation On wethier there the same Character, In Super Smash Bros Ultimate, A Character Who Resembles Leaf Makes an Appearance as the Female Parrel to The Character that Resembles Red, Gotcha a TH-cam Exclusion Music Video Was Made to Show the Evolution Of Pokemon and How Many Characters and Pokemon have Been Added Since, Much Like Kris, Zinnia, and The Battle Frontier Members from Hoenn, Leafs Existence is Completely Forgotten By The Video, In Pokemon Masters a Mobile Gaca Game, features Almosf Every Character from The Pokemon games, With Leaf Also being Included. I do think that leaf/green should be included in more pokemon games and media and does deserve a spot, but I don’t think she is interchangeable with red. I don’t think it would work if you fought her instead of red at the top of mt silver, because the red fight up there is so iconic at this point. Same goes for the relationship between blue and red, it’s so iconic and almost brother like that you can’t replace red with green or add in green as a third wheel to them. Instead, I think that green should be added as her own character seperate to red, sort of like what they tried in lets go (though executed better of course)
I think the whole Eevee thing in masters is supposed to counter reflect the fact that Red used an Eevee back in his original run that evolved into Espeon, but later became a forgotten pokemon on his team, however if they wanted Leaf to play a support role in masters, Jigglypuff or Clefairy would've been more true to her character. I do believe that Leaf and Green themselves are more or less counterparts in themselves, as Leaf in FR/LG is the trainer that picks bulbasaur (in theory), since Red picks Charmander, and Blue picks Squirtle, leaving Leaf with the last starter. But her existence as a whole was just poorly done in itself
I think a lot of people, like me thought Leaf & Green were the same person but then I realised that in japan they call green 'blue' and blue 'green'. So when you look at it from a Japanese perspective, it makes no fucking sense for 'Blue' to be the same character as Leaf.

Tbh, they should just retcon the entire anime and try following the manga for once (who has better characters, better storylines, better battles, better concepts) Im not talking about a stupid 5 episode special, as cool as it was....but i mean legit an anime following the manga. I believe giving players the option of a female avatar is very nice, especially in games with a silent protagonist. I don't believe this is a necessity.
I prefer Leaf and Green being separate characters. At least Leaf's name and personality in Pokémon Masters drastically differ from Green's in Let's Go.
i honestly want them to treat Leaf the same way that they treat Red, maybe i'm too attached to certain pokepastas but Leaf was the hero of kanto for so many people, and only Red is ever attributed to the team rocket takedown, when leaf is just as equal in that regard.

Yeah, Leaf/Green really Got screwed by not appearing in the original games: she never appears in future main games because...they mainly reference the Gen 1 games specifically - not the Gen 3 remakes where she appears (with let's go being a weird exception) and at this point, she is unlikely to appear in the anime, since she would be hard to fit and the spot she could have gotten in the past are now being filled by other characters, like Misty. I think the worst thing is that now in the games she really feels awkward as part of the Kanto trio: Red and Blue have such an incredibly well-established rivalry/dynamic in the games that her presence can feel a bit out of place to some imho .
Also, I feel like that Kris isn't really in a better position imho: yes, she got to appear in some anime specials, but she and Lyra are just straight up considered different characters at this point and more people remember the latter due to both the remakes giving her an NPC role and the main anime series giving her some episodes as well, while Kris will probably remain in the dust, except for spin-offs like Masters.

Green in Let's Go is not based on the manga. She's based on Green as seen in the unused Sugimori art for R/B/G and as the female player character in FR/LG (yes, they are the same character, there's no reason to call her "Leaf"). She's wearing an adapted version of her outfit from the concept art to match Red and Blue wearing outfits from that era. They added the cyan to her shirt to indicates it's the same character from FR/LG. This is our first time seeing her presented as a character in the games and I can't be pleased enough. It's just a shame she's underutilized in it.

In G/S/C green same outfit and her personality went to the Indigo Plateu and take Red's place as Champion, but Lance put her in the final elite four place since she lost to him. She Cheated her way to become the Champion and that's why Lance take the Champion place. Later on she still giult tripping many trainers before facing lance and changed the elite four systems of the members that are weak against to. Green/Blue JP qualifies as a main Villain of the Gen II games. Loves Silver to be his lover. Green/Blue JP/Terrya/Karen is Sexaully offended to rape or kill Silver.

I'd say Leaf and Green in the games are the same character, the main confusion in this case was kind of the fandom's and Bulbapedia's fault. When FRLG were released in 2004, the female character didn't have a confirmed official name; the game provided you with some optional names, two of them being Green and Leaf. Many called her Green since we were familiar with Red's and Blue's names, though a large portion of the fanbase latched onto the name Leaf. Similarly, there were people who called FRLG's Red "Fire", and for HGSS many called Lyra "Soul" though those fan names haven't stuck around as much as "Leaf" did. At some point in 2005, Bulbapedia made the main name for her article "Leaf" even though it wasn't official, which really helped introduce people to that name instead of Green. The first time the name "Leaf" was used somewhat officially was about 15 years later in the 2019 spin-off mobile game Pokémon Masters EX made by DeNA Co. thanks to how well known the fan name was at that point, which contradicted how Game Freak called her Green in the 2018 Let's Go Pikachu. We can see that the Pokémon Company also had her called Green in the 2021 Pokémon Evolutions series.
On the point about her outfit difference, in FRLG it was just redesigned to match the newer style they settled on, then they changed it in Let's Go Pikachu to call back to the RGBY concept art style just like what was done for Red and Blue. Similarly, when the manga entered the FRLG series, manga Green switched over to wearing the FRLG outfit and has been ever since so there is an understanding in the manga that the characters are the same.
On the difference between game Green/Leaf's and manga Green's personalities, it's just a situation of cross media differences; just like how Red in the manga is a different person from Red in the games. The people and events of the manga are generally treated by the Pokémon Company as part of their own world based on the games yet distinct in many ways, so similarly manga Green can be seen as a different person from game Green/Leaf. The best way to understand how the Pokémon Company views game Green/Leaf's character is probably by watching Pokémon Evolutions Ep. 8 which ties in with that surprise meeting in Let's Go Pikachu. It would be nice if Game Freak went on to make game Green/Leaf a more complex character like manga Green, though I'm somehow unsure if they'd be able to manage it given their track record.
TL;DR: In-game Green being known by the unofficial name Leaf by so many people is mostly Bulbapedia's fault. The reason why in-game Green and manga Green are so different is because the games and mangas are treated as two different canons by the Pokémon Company. I wish Green would show up more often in the games too.
Yeah this makes sense. Ignoring the name aspect, as I'm one of those that have just gone with Leaf all these years (but i also actively call Blue "Gary" because i genuinely think the "just name them after a game version" scheme was always stupid with a few exceptions and I'm glad they got smarter about it and just pick actual names), I was never all that confused by it because i never consider the manga characters the same as the games anyway. It's just like the anime, there's no reason to assume they overlap, and especially for someone like Leaf/Green who prior to the let's go appearance had NO game characterization as per the job description as a player character, the depiction in Let's Go can simply be seen as establishing one for her finally, just how Red went from no personality to "serious, driven, man of no words" purely because of the Gen 2 depiction. It's good you brought up the TH-cam Pokemon specials as well, as these are tge exceptions to other multimedia in the series, being direct adaptations of various game events, rather than telling their own stories, this further simply cements the personality they wanna give Leaf/Green in the games specifically. Not a fumbling of her manga character

Her manga appearance really made me love this character. It's really unfortunate that she gets overlooked, but her appearance in LGPE did make me really happy even if I thought it was rather weak.

I remember picking her as my character for Pokemon LeafGreen, and back when Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Pokemon HeartGold & SoulSilver were coming out, I was hoping we'd see her in those games, and was a bit disappointed when neither didn't happen. (at least Ultimate fixed that mistake)
Anyway, I gotta say, the fact that Green has a Clefable on her team is not only a cute nod to the Manga, but also to the fact that it's pre-evolution, Clefairy, could've been the mascot of the series, sort of making the two counterparts to Red and Pikachu.
When she showed up in Let's Go, I assumed her different personality is what they wanted Game Universe Green to be, but then we have her appearance in Pokemon Masters and she appears to have yet another different personality, so I have no idea. (I haven't actually played Masters, so I could be wrong on this)
Speaking of Masters, her being associated with Venusaur is probably due to the fact that Red nowadays is associated with Charizard. (and by extension, Blue with Blastoise) Her being associated with Blastoise during Let's Go was probably more of a case a callback to that old artwork of her with Red and Blue. (something I don't particularly mind, as I associate Classic Red with Venusaur and Modern Red with Charizard)
A character that's been constantly flip flopped, never has any solid interpretation, and is randomly thrown about the games as a whole regardless of context, just to appeal to fanservice?

I know you're probably tired of me leaving critical comments on each of your videos (lol), but it really does seem (and you implicitly say) that Leaf/Green's poor handling is a direct result of Game Freak being either unable or unwilling to tell a proper story (I'm partly a timeline theorist and holy shit they fucked up big time). Characters constantly get underdeveloped, never reappear outside of a few cameos that either ruin or destabilize the context of whatever they appear in, and are pushed to the wayside of stuff they always do because nostalgia. The fact that we still don't really know what this character is _named_ speaks for itself, truth be told. Now I don't consider this to be inherently bad, as saddling a bunch of emotional character development leads to the opposite problem where any callbacks and callfronts need to appropriate their source carefully as to not piss off fans familiar with the original (like those who read the manga and saw Green's appearance in Let's Go!). But it's such a darn shame that most of Pokemon's characters get sidelined because the series so religiously adheres to its formula (I personally think Pokemon has some of the best designs of any RPG......I just really don't like standard JRPG character design). The creatures themselves usually don't have this problem, since you actually use them. And while Masters is a great step in that regard, it's ultimately a short changed attempt when that character never had an identity to begin with.
I'm still miffed they had the audacity to put Meltan in an entirely separate category in HOME, but maybe apathy and never answering the important questions is the way forward. Can't say that leaves Leaf/Green's prospects high, lemme tell you.

the only way i can sort this mess without hurting my head is to treat them as characters from different multiverse, based on their starters:
as evidenced by pokemon masters (although sometimes they give trainers pokemon that were never associated with them before):
red (game) - charmander
blue (game) - squirtle
leaf (game) - bulbasaur
from the pokemon adventures manga and early ken sugimori art:
red (manga/art) - bulbasaur
blue (manga/art) - charmander
green (manga/art) - squirtle
as to why figures like kotobukiya's ARTFX J showed her as leaf but with a squirtle instead of a bulbasaur, i don't take that into account too much since they paired may with a mudkip even though she's traditionally seen with a torchic

I think the reason they went with the name Green instead of Leaf is because Leaf is specifically from FRLG, and they wanted to reference not gen3 but specifically the unused female trainer design from the strategy book. Red and Blue use their original design from the gameboy instead of the gen 3 designs so its a similar idea, and I guess having a name that references gen3 would be weird? idk, add that the confusion abt her not having an official name until Masters

Green in the Adventures Manga is almost iconic as a sassy, witty and mischievous anti hero.
This was actually a really good video to discover. I was just thinking about Kris and Layra and how they were so different despite being the same character in the manga. I then remembered Leaf and decided to look up her appearances. I knew that she appeared in Let's Go, but I was confused when nothing came up. This really bugged and thank you for taking all the thoughts that have been bugging me and putting them into video format.

bit late to this vid but Leaf/Green are meant to be the same in the games I believe. if you look at Greens outfit in Let's Go, she's wearing her blue top (as Leaf) underneath her dress. it was meant to reference both but the name Leaf was used just for LEAF Green. her canon name is Green. that's my take anyway.
I think I remember some video explaining in-game evidence in Let's Go Pikachu / Let's Go Eevee which said that these Game's interpretation of "Green" was made artificially by the same blokes who made Mewtwo. Apparently Blane acknowledges that you've seen her or something like that.
edit: Also Leaf using an Eevee might be because the Female player trainer in Let's Go Pikachu / Let's Go Eevee is more commonly associated with Eevee in official art & stuff and they probably wouldn't bother putting characters from a game like that in Masters.
To me, the heros edition of her is how I most empathize with her, since when I played LG, I had the same team as her. I never saw her as a character like Blue and Red, to me Leaf was always meant to be a blank slave, so everytime she showed up, I was more happy to see her as a Easter egg than to see her as a character.
I guess what I am trying to say is that, I never cared for her as a character, and I guess people in game freak didn't either
Leaf deserved a better stage. There is a story about her on Wikipedia, manga reference...being kidnapped and she escaped, survived and captured Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres to battle and survive. She wasn't previliged like the other Pokemon protagonists in a safe environment. She grew up in a hostile environment and outranked her peers.

Actually, I think those aren't all the same character. The one you see in Let's Go is based on a version from the Japanese-exclusive anime that never got American localization. Supposedly, she's Mr. Fuji's daughter who died and why he was working on cloning science to revive her, Team Rocket caught wind and decided to bankroll it on the condition he try to clone Mew for them also. In the original Japanese version of the 1st movie, you see how this played out. You see the "dreams" of the clones as they develop, their consciousnesses joined because of Mewtwo's psychic powers. But one by one, all the clones except Mewtwo become unviable and fail, which makes Mewtwo bitter and explains why he betrays Team Rocket. Green throws Pokéballs at you because since she developed sharing her mindspace with clone Pokémon, she saw the Pokémon as equals and when she saw that people throw balls at them and she didn't really make a distinction between Pokémon and people she saw you the player character as fair game to throw balls at. Game Theory did a whole video about it, watch their explanation.
Good shit man. Very well presented video. It always perplexed me seeing how poorly handled Blue (calling her that, since that's the name I saw when I started reading the manga) by the actual company. It's even weird when you consider how the foundation for her character is literally laid out by Hidenori's mind. Yet, she stayed as a blank slate. I was over the moon seeing her there in LGPE. But then that interaction happened and I was like... What? It's like they literally just put here there for the hell of it. It's honestly a shame. The main audience will never get to bear witness to one of the best characters in the Pokemon world. Although I guess the same can be said for the other manga characters. Oh well, keep up the good work!
People who started out with LGPE would be very confused, people who played FRLG but never read the manga would be confused, and manga readers would also be confused. Well done, Game Freak.
FRLG and Let's Go are both directed by Junichi Masuda, so we can argue that, by his point of view, both characters are the same and the name change is only for marketing reasons (similar to how the Johto male character is named Gold in Gen 2 and Ethan in Gen 4).
In fact, I won't be surprised if it turned out that the marketing team named her Gen 3 incarnation "Leaf" just because it was the named commonly used in the fandom, making also Bulbapedia one of those to blame for the "character split".
Masuda was not a character designer on FRLG or LGPE, so I don't think that's safe to say at all.

I agree Leaf/Green was under-utilized, but maybe if she were to make an appearance in 'Origins' or 'Generations' she may have had a voice, and the one actress I have in mind for her is Lara Jill Miller.
I always loved Leaf/Green despite her lack of character development and still waits to this day for it.. She should've been in Pokemon Origins! Oh and in the Arc finale of Pokemon Masters EX, we get to see some personality like she is saying how she Red and blue grew up together yadda yadda

Green is one of my FAVOURITE charachters in the manga. It's sad to see her being overlooked. Also if you haven't read more than to ruby&sapphire, I recommend that you at least read up to emerald. Then you've read the first "segment".

I think it makes perfect sense for Leaf to have a Venosaur since it fits in with the color theme of Red having a Charizard (fire), Blue having a Blaustoise (water) and then Leaf which is Green having a Venosaur (grass). That's probably the logic the Masters team used. I doubt they were thinking about the Adventures manga or the Lets go Pikachu Green character.
Also since this video Leaf has been added to the trainer lounge and has some more cute bonding moments. I think that game treated her fairly well and put her right there next to Red and Blue as the OG champions.
As a compromise call her Green Leaf or Blue Leaf! Also, she appears in Smash Ultimate as an alternate costume for the Pokémon Trainer.
The ONLY way i see Red and Green work in the remake is make the part "Fire" and "Leaf" as they names, so that makes then not the SAME character, which explain a LOT...

I think they removed the girl because of technical limitations. As Pokemon was already pushing the Game boy's cartridges to the limit. Apparently Mew was only added because the programmers found a way to save RAM elsewhere. And it wasn't until the higher specced Game boy color that they managed to pull it off.

in the r/b/y manga green was the female protagonest she was a thief and a lier so the all black was to suit her chacter. later in the sieris (i mean 20 books later) she changes her look because she is going to meet her parents for the first time and she made a promise to oak not to steal anymore soooo her entire personalty changed... 'leaf' is green and her frlg model is just updated. red and blue change thier look and yet no one calls them fire or water. use logic people.

Bloody good this. I had no idea Green from the manga was so wild, definitely quite a daring character for Pokémon from the looks of things but in a fun way. Summat about Leaf always did remain iconic even in the years where she was absent, but now we're definitely in a hot mess. Still, I'll take Let's Go Green over nowt. It's a couple years late, but i think you probably misunderstood the intent of LG Green. This isn't a weird fumble of trying to implement the manga character into the games, as they wouldn't ever do this anyway. Same reason Adventures Red and game Red are practically opposite personalities. Gen 2 onwards, Red in the games is a driven but silent serious guy, now that he's an NPC and allowed to be characterized. This is them simply being very very very late of doing the same to our girl here. In the games before this, she's only been a player character and per the job description, no characterization going on. Dunno why they left her out so much before Let's Go, but now that she's back and an NPC they can simply give her a personality now. We're just witnessing the birth of a game personality for Green, not a fuck up of bringing a manga character to the games. As for the outfit change, well that's pretty much all it amounts to.

I used to think Green and Leaf were the same character simply because I didn't know anything about them other than their names? Then because of Pokémon Masters, I learned that Green and Leaf are different characters (thanks to a certain individual lol), and now I'm learning that Green in LGPE is different to Green in the Pokémon Adventures manga. This video has been a great help explaining this character, and I can only wonder why the hell Leaf/Green2 got treated this way

In my opinion, I think Green (or Leaf as many fans call her) should've been the final trainer you battle against on Mt. Silver in HeartGold & SoulSilver if you played as Lyra, while you battle Red if you played as Ethan. I think it would've been a very nice touch since you're basically battling against the character you played as in the previous games, but I guess Red was (and still is) much more popular with the fans that GameFreak decided to just have Red as the final battle regardless of which gender you chose. It's a shame and a wasted opportunity really.
I think it should have been that before you get to Red, you encounter a trainer named Green (maybe before the entrance to Mt silver or somewhere inside) that you would have to battle. It would be like a pre-trial to battle Red, and I think it would make sense since Blue is the last kanto gym leader.
I forget if you battle the kanto elite 4, but I think it would go Blue, Green, Red and be a nice call back to the (reverse) order the games were released

Remakes are only created to keep the Stories Relevant but there not intended to replace the Existance of the originals, Soul Silver and Heartgold are Remakes of Gold Silver and Crystal, those games gave the option to Visit a Time passed Kanto after Becoming Champion, after Earning all of the Badges in the game the Players can travel to Silver Cave Where they will Battle Red, despite those Remakes being Sequels to Gen 1's Remakes They decided to Just stick with Red even if you Choose the Female, And makes no Suptansial Appearance in it, this is because adding her would just be Too Out of Place and would led to Sepectflication that the Remakes are indeed ex Replacing the Originals, so instead they Ignore Her existence, one Gen later Red, Blue, and the Kanto Gym leaders make reappearance in BW2 as battle Members of the World Tournament, even despite not being Remakes Leaf is Once again Not Present to Again put Remakes Aside Despite that They all appear in there updated Designs that were used in the Remakes, in sun and Moon, Red and Blue Make Appearances as Adults, while still containing design Traits from their Remakes, Leaf Again has no Appearance

I do think that leaf/green should be included in more pokemon games and media and does deserve a spot, but I don’t think she is interchangeable with red. I don’t think it would work if you fought her instead of red at the top of mt silver, because the red fight up there is so iconic at this point. Same goes for the relationship between blue and red, it’s so iconic and almost brother like that you can’t replace red with green or add in green as a third wheel to them. Instead, I think that green should be added as her own character seperate to red, sort of like what they tried in lets go (though executed better of course)

I think the whole Eevee thing in masters is supposed to counter reflect the fact that Red used an Eevee back in his original run that evolved into Espeon, but later became a forgotten pokemon on his team, however if they wanted Leaf to play a support role in masters, Jigglypuff or Clefairy would've been more true to her character. I do believe that Leaf and Green themselves are more or less counterparts in themselves, as Leaf in FR/LG is the trainer that picks bulbasaur (in theory), since Red picks Charmander, and Blue picks Squirtle, leaving Leaf with the last starter. But her existence as a whole was just poorly done in itself

I think a lot of people, like me thought Leaf & Green were the same person but then I realised that in japan they call green 'blue' and blue 'green'. So when you look at it from a Japanese perspective, it makes no fucking sense for 'Blue' to be the same character as Leaf.
That's true but then you realize that Leaf,well the leaf in FRLG wears a lot of blue and I'm pretty sure Blue(Rival Blue) Has green outlines somewhere on his outfit.So they could be the same character with different localization names

Tbh, they should just retcon the entire anime and try following the manga for once (who has better characters, better storylines, better battles, better concepts) Im not talking about a stupid 5 episode special, as cool as it was....but i mean legit an anime following the manga. I believe giving players the option of a female avatar is very nice, especially in games with a silent protagonist. I don't believe this is a necessity.
I prefer Leaf and Green being separate characters. At least Leaf's name and personality in Pokémon Masters drastically differ from Green's in Let's Go.
i honestly want them to treat Leaf the same way that they treat Red, maybe i'm too attached to certain pokepastas but Leaf was the hero of kanto for so many people, and only Red is ever attributed to the team rocket takedown, when leaf is just as equal in that regard.
