  • With the announcement of Zarude as the latest mythical Pokemon, I think it's time to put into question how we can fix the problems that have plagued both their design and implementation ever since the series early beginnings.

    Got nothing here. Just saying it's great knowing that someone is fully aware that modern Pokemon's problems are original sins resulting from decontextualized tropes and trends from the 90s and not recent developments resulting from "overall fan reception". Big respect.

    Hopefully now that DLC is a thing they can actually add some meat to new event Mons, I agree that simply having an ingame location doesn't make a Mythical amazing but I'd be pretty happy if we got even that for Zarude.

    Basically described everything I felt but couldn't actually properly explain! It's like just throwing a mythical in the game without any context does nothing, like we want lore!

    In a nutshell, what makes Mew and Meltan work as mythical Pokémon is that their existence is *debatable* (literally myths), kids who triggered the Mew glitch by accident would probably have thought that their cartridge was cursed and led to a lot of speculations and playground rumors trying to retread on their steps and Meltan looked so faked that people wouldn't accept it was something official and more than a gag from a mobile game spinoff.
    Other mythical simply don't have this because they are easy to datamine and predict, plus they have no thematic or contextual relevance (literally, I feel only reason why Zeraora and Zarude are mythicals instead of being another furbait mascot like Lucario or Zoroak it's simply because they placed them very late into the Pokédex past the legendaries lmao). In terms of theme and constency, I think Hoopa was the last great mythical to work as a sort of deity as it contextualizes the phenomenom of the Pokémon Multiverse so it makes sense that its presence is better felt in ORAS with its rings transporting all of the legendaries into Hoenn as it's the game that teases the concept of the multiverse as a whole (sadly this gets dashed away in Gen 7 with the Ultra Wormholes having no contextual reasoning, turning Hoopa redudant, but thankfully finds meaning in Pokémon Masters by justify the nature of crossing over characters from different continuities into one game)
    Also, the idea that mythical Pokémon should have side-quest associated to them it's a bit flawed as these are time-limited events, meaning that as soon the event seizes distribution these side-quest would become lost content that can't be obtained legally.

    i think how they handled deoxys in the post game of oras was a pretty good step up as even though it already fit in the region like you said, now a days it is hard to even have it in the og games. thankfully things like Keldeo in the crown tundra and Celebi in the crystal rerelease for 3ds are ways that have made them fit better in the games.

    I agree with what you said. To add onto how to fix it I feel like they should at the very least be named dropped in the main story because, especially with the recent ones, it feels like they just popped out of nowhere with no explanation and is only called mythical because game freak said so. It would be cool to have a little mystery aspect with the mythical Pokémon without actually showing it.

    What I'm hearing is that maybe they need to drop the yearly game cycle and take more time with the games. It's burning everyone (especially the devs) out on Pokemon games as a whole. The meltan stuff seems like a good idea because it came from outside of that yearly cycle. So, yeah.

    With DP remakes probably coming this year, I think they should do mythical DLC for the remakes. Add some story event to the myths, a dungeon with pokemon that you can’t catch in the region normally, and the mythical for like $5 or less. Sure people would say: “ugh they’re making us pay when it used to be free” but really you’re paying for the experience. Idk just a thought lol

  • @RetroLiminal99444

    I like what they did with Pecharunt in this generation. No movie tie in or anything.
    It’s a longer event which has us go back to the land of Kitakami with our original friend group to meet up with the new friends. There was no dungeon or anything but the event was really hilarious and entertaining and it was a 1 hour epilogue. The fact that Pecharunt was right under our noses before we knew of this thing was kind shocking to me.
    It’s not perfect but it certainly beats the 2 minute quests of, Get this item, go here, walk there, catch the mythical and that’s it.
    Even though there was no world building with this thing we did get to see what it was capable of.
    Melmetal and Pecharunt are my 2 favorites.

    I'm catching up with your content and it's really good. I truly appreciate your hard work and effort into trying to give hard facts and explanations versus assumptions.
    A lot of mythical pokemon's problems go as far back as gen 2. The main issue being that many mythicals would be the result of some sort of gimmick to draw in players. In modern times, many people can see them for what they are: gimmicks. But back in 90's/early to mid 2000's these would be cool ways for players to engage with the game. Back then, distributions via cartridges and early WiFI events were considered a new and relatively cool thing that was more than enough to sell you on the mon. However, nowadays this obviously doesn't work because even most kids are smart enough to know what's what. When I was a kid, getting that Victini event when Wifi was really starting to take off in my household was a cool thing. However, now that everyone has that, it won't have the same effect.
    The recent generations haven't created this issue, just highlighted how outdated this particular model is. And as you said, adding more steps wouldn't fix this issue, but rather, make it more tedious. Sure adding a special dungeon wouldn't be particularly a bad thing as a event only example, but that would just make it longer to get that mythical. I've seen people say that it would be better than just being handed it (and I totally understand that desire to "earn" a mythical and rightfully so) but at the same time, I know people would also complain if they sacrificed that convenience we have now.
    My personal solution to this? Limit the amount of mythicals BUT have a special episode for them. I think the recent Crown Tundra DLC introduced Calyrex and their conflict really well. Imagine having a mythical involved in the same way as a surprise, but in-game. I think not only could you add to that sense of reward but still have a convenient way to appeal to players who maybe don't want those extra steps added. A plain dungeon is one thing, but a background side quest or developing sub-event that the player is involved in could showcase that well.
    This is just me throwing thoughts out, but this really isn't an easy solution and was bound to happen considering how many mythical pokemon we have now.

    Can you do a video on why the new pokemon designs use such terrible color choices? I feel this is a major part in why the designs are so poor, they consistently pick unattractive colors that dont go together, and that somehow have a 'cheap' feel.

    Honestly it's exhausting to have to force myself to care about Pokemon every time a mythical is released in case I decide later on that I actually do care enough to play the game again and would like to have that Pokemon. I really wish Game Freak would move on from limited time frames in which you could acquire them and just distributed a password or something that could work indefinitely. As it stands right now I don't even bother trying to catch the events. I don't even know when they happen.

    I think with DLC being a thing in pokemon games it really opens the possibility to add actually mythical mythicals - ones you can't just hack in from launch day and ones that can be implemented with unique dungeons. Just imagine something like a DLC that gives you an item that can lead you to an actual endgame dungeon, a gauntlet of trainers and obsacles with the mythical as a superboss ala Ultra Necrozma.
    Or even just adding a hidden nook or cranny somewhere in the game way past its launch without telling the player where to look and hiding one of the mythicals there.
    There is a lot of potential, though I'm not sure Gamefreak will utilize it to its fullest extent.

    the good news with Meltan is it probably _won't_ be sloppily repeated given it is likely based on the Missingno glitch. the strongest clues this could be true are the somewhat-infinite box of Meltans and the fact you get Meltans by removing pokémon from Pokémon Go

  • @Miju001
    @Miju001 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Got to disagree with your stance on in-game events. I think they help a lot with making Mythicals feel like they're actually part of the region. They give them more mystery, too. I wouldn't mind if they were more elaborate, though.

    I liked the Mew event in Emerald we didn't get to play. It was pretty cute to search for Mew in the grass. The Deoxys puzzle was meh. Didn't really need to exist.
    The rumors on how to get these Pokemon were far more interesting.
    Also can we just demote some of these Pokemon now? There are way too many myphical Pokemon and it's a pain to wait several years just in hopes we get them in the new game. Especially most of the myphicals look like generic Pokemon such as Zeraora being a Zoroark lookalike furry thingy.

  • @Septor-xc4xr
    @Septor-xc4xr 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I feel like as the video progresses the topic shifts from mythicals to legendaries, or at least it treats mythicals as legendaries, and I found it surprising that the fact that most mythical pokemon are simply just given away now, instead of having an event accompany them.
    Personally I feel like since they're not legendaries they shouldn't be treated like them, but I do agree that there has to be some sort of way to make them feel more mysterious like mew and meltan, something the community has to work for and figure out to be able to fully unlock, but sadly with the way the main series is catering to a younger audience I doubt thatll happen

    The funny thing you mention about "Rayquaza hard bc high level and team is bogged down by HMs and injured" and then showing Shaymin and Arceus as the opposite of that is...no they're not. To get to Shaymin you need to go back through victory road which requires HM moves to progress through, and same thing with Mt Coronet for Arceus, and mind you Arceus is Lv80, at best you'd start the post game off around the late 50s Early 60s in DPPt. Everything you can do to trivialise the difficulty (eg running away from everything, using the masterball) can be said for Rayquaza as well. And I'm pretty sure Rayquaza is post game only as well? That was just a sloppy argument.
    I think the real issue with Mythicals is that they exist at all. Want this pokemon legally? Too bad, time travel back to this event period from 2012 that lasted 3 weeks if you want it. Didn't get a mystery gift code? Sucks to be you. This is a reason why people praise the Gen 4 events: You can access them WITHOUT needing to have gotten the game launch day thanks to void travelling (glitches) or just hacking in the right item into your inventory. No way the game will be able to tell the item was hacked since you could have got the item during the event but didn't use it till 10 years later like some madlad.

    • @LewtwoYT
      @LewtwoYT  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      lol for Shaymin you literally have an NPC healing you most of the way and with Arceus you're backtracking through a dungeon you beat ten hours ago vs a genuinely difficult movement puzzle like Sky Pillar

    • @Kiri68419
      @Kiri68419 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LewtwoYT If you've already gone through that part of victory road before you get Oak's letter, you don't have Marley to heal you. And like I said, running away from everything is an option regardless of which pokemon you're going to grab in whatever generation. Not fast enough? Surely you have a smoke ball by then.
      In regards to Rayquaza's puzzle, only two floors on Sky Pillar have cracked floor tiles. Floor 2's is "zip across on mach bike" which isn't even really a puzzle, and only on Floor 4 do you need to think about how you're moving. You can complete the puzzle in a minute. I think you're over-estimating it's difficulty. Sure, it will take kids a few tries to figure it out but it's nothing that leaves you frustrated. It's fine if you have nostalgia for Rayquaza in particular, but don't let it blind you. I started with Gen 4 and I'm sure as hell not gonna go down with the ship of "Bell tower puzzle was hard".

    • @LewtwoYT
      @LewtwoYT  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Kiri68419 Then you're fighting against Wild Pokemon that you can assuredly run from, no? As opposed to a flat movement puzzle? I'm not claiming that any of these are hard (I started with G4 as well so I dunno why that's relevant) but having something remotely interesting is better than going through Mt. Coronet to get to a new hallway. Why would you not want more challenges for kids and new opportunities for unique and memorable level design to get legendaries?
