  • Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl have been announced! But why exactly are ILCA and Game Freak's Sinnoh Remakes so divisive? What about the chibi artstyle has people do caught up? Will the gameplay deliver when compared to Pokemon Platinum, or even the original Gen 4 games?
Let's talk about it. yes, this is a clickbait title

what worries me the most is the atmosphere tbh. the originals had this nostalgic, melancholic, and kinda lonely atmosphere very reminiscent of a cold winter morning. it was very soothing, and very comfy, and it's the one thing that really remains with me after all these years. i hope the game manages to replicate this to an extent, but either way, i'll always have platinum.

@@user-vw2bn6qi2l it feels bright but it also has a lifeless shadow. a lot of artists know that to make an atmosphere in lighting look more "realistic", they have to use shadows that are actual colors (for example, blue) rather than black/gray or else it will look dead.

The remake just... doesnt have a lighting engine at all for some reason. Looks so amateur its insane. As a game dev student it really hurts to see all the assets they use as well, especially for the greenery.

You described it the way I thought of it. I didn't get to play DPP growing up, but I did know of the anime. When I finally got Diamond I decided to play it during that winter storm Texas got, and with the atmosphere of the game, and irl, it was perfect. Already feel nostalgia for it now

The thing I'm most scared of is the soundtrack changing too much from where the originals set. You're completely right by saying the atmosphere felt like a cold winter morning, but the music and soundtrack is what furthered that entire plot in the first place. The three lakes music was one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard and it is forever engraved in my mind. Mt. Coronet's soundtrack has me hooked on the adventure of it all and the overall soundtrack of route's is what made me love going back and just training Pokémon in the first place. It had progress written all over it and watching that stray away from what it originally was could kill my entire experience as a whole. I have to be real and upfront as a 20 year old I haven't kept up with most of the newer games and in all honesty this is my first time seeing the announcement of these remakes, but it has my vote if they do it right. I don't want them to revert back to the old art style. I'd rather see them continue to progress, but still keep that nostalgic feel of what Sinnoh is. Even the remakes of Ruby and Sapphire had the distinctive traits that the originals had and them trying to keep Sinnoh in it's original form with newer graphics doesn't feel like it, but in all honesty shits on the entire fan base of it as a whole.

@@randehmarshgames4608 because it was "too different" they didn't like that their childhood had been upgraded to include a new story. They didn't like that it wasn't a faithful remake. Mega evolution was bashed on a lot because it wasn't part of the story in the originals. The battle frontier not being there (which is understandable I totally agree with this one). They didn't like latios and latias being torn from the endgame and given to you. They didn't like all the wormholes hoopa made that scattered through the region. They hated the idea of alternate timelines. They were screaming that ORAS was another cash grab and gamefreak was their laziest when they made these two. Literally this hate on gamefreak for ORAS was everywhere. I'm not saying nobody liked them. But this hate was SO much louder than the love. So I feel for gamefreak when they want to play it safe. I feel like Pokemon Legends was supposed to be their real remake but they didn't want to let the fans down again so they remastered DPPt into BDSP and that's why they handed it off to another studio so they could focus on the one they really wanted to make yet give all the fans the faithful remake they really wanted.

I think the fans started to get toxic from sun and moon and I played moon loved the island challenges which is better then the gyms to me and the handholding tutorial was what got a lot of people annoyed and sword and shield gave the option to skip it. I just find that people are getting more spoiled by each entry and ask for something better by giving no specific detail to improve when Pokemon has been good and successful with the same gameplay or game with not much of a story sun and moon story was not bad but story is not what go to Pokemon for.

I've said that a lot in the past too. Remakes should be about taking a game and building it again with the vision you had originally without the layer of abstraction you had to use because hardware at the time couldn't support your vision.
Remakes can add new content or modify mechanics but it has to be in a way that clearly improves the experience. What this game is, is lazy. The sad thing is the chibi overworld art is harder to make because they don't have any assets that were like that prior to base their work on which means they had to create all new assets with new scales and design them to work with specific camera angles.

Team Magma still has their base in the middle of the ocean... for some reason, areas like Meteor Falls have the same visual design as in Ruby and Sapphire and not the revamped and far superior design from Emerald, and overall there's so much missing that if I wanted to play a Hoenn game, I would just play Emerald.

The part that gets me the most is that this game wasn't created on the current generations engine. I am not really a big fan of Sword and Shield, but I still feel like remakes have always been remade on the current engine would have been interesting for me, and possibly brought me back in. I think part of this was that when they developed D/P on DS, they were rushed with low time to develop it. I think that it is quite the Sinnoh thing to happen, where here we are, 10-15 years later, and they are actually in the same situation. The engine for Sword and Shield is probably pretty large, and quite the obstacle to work with. Knowing this, and the fact they needed a D/P remake with again little time, I think that they were forced into this situation, where they had to outsource this project. Honestly this game gives off the recent Disney movie vibes, where it is trying to survive completely off of nostalgia, where that is the thrill of the game... Anyways, I am hoping that the game is still fun to play, and just like you at this moment it is very concerning.

I thoroughly enjoyed every single one of them and defended Game Freak on many occasions when people were complaining for the smallest things. To now express my discontent with how these remakes look and then getting bombarded with comments such as "you guys always complain" or "they gave you the remake you wanted" just feels so frustrating.
I am one of the many people who liked SwSh, ESPECIALLY the dlc content. The Crown Tundra and it's snowy scenery had me daydreaming about how amazing Sinnoh would look in that style. I wouldn't even mind if they released it next year so they had more time to work on it. I'm not saying that it isn't possible that they are too similar either, but I like this approach for a remake since you say that the point is to make you want to play it instead of the original, but they end up being such different games that ( to me at least ) makes the original replayable still. So now I have 2 games I want to play with almost the same story, or in some cases 3 games that have the same story, plot and everything. It's so frustrating hearing people say stuff like "Why are pokemon fans always so ungrateful. They asked for a remake and they got one that's faithful to the original." I don't want a remake to be completely faithful to the original, that's the whole damn point of a remake. I've got a copy of diamond and of platinum I can just go back and play them whenever I want, why would I spend so much money to play a weird plastic looking version of it.
Diamond was my first pokemon game, and while I look back on it fondly I still think it's one of the weaker games in the series, so I'm kind of worried the remakes are just gonna be carbon copies of the original games only faster and with the same damn 3D models we've been seeing since X and Y.

i hate the idea of being "ungrateful" or "grateful" to a game studio to begin with. these games are not a gift they're giving me. they're a product that a company is making, and that company wants me to buy them. that's like saying i'm ungrateful for not liking a microwaveable dinner i bought with my own money, as if my mother just cooked it herself, gave it to me, and i insulted her by disliking the food. i have no reason to be "grateful" for any product they're trying to sell me. i could feel grateful for good memories but they already made those and i already paid for those games, that doesn't automatically travel forward.
not to mention "be grateful for even getting the sinnoh remake" is a worthless argument in general. god knows i never asked for them to remake this generation, it was personally my least favorite i've ever played. by that logic i would've never been grateful for a sinnoh remake- even if i liked the result and thought it was good.

just money, thats why theyre pumping out underdeveloped games for the price of full ones, then smacking on 40 dollar dlcs that somewhat finish the game, still leaving the whole experience as a semi-broken mess.
or remaking a game as basic as possible and then slapping on a price tag that's far above what it should be.
i geuss that's what happens when you have no competition... because you kill it all...
and its not just gamefreak or the pokemon company, its nintendo too by now, theyve been going down the same path with legend of zelda.
ocarina of time and majoras mask 3d are almost entirely just upscales and bug fixes, though the secondary screen actually adds something, skyward sword is just slight upscaling and bug fixing, with a slight control revision that couldve been done better in the end.

@Susandrinks Semens But they aren't incompetent.
Yes, the team is not as good as other AAA game developers in the graphics department, but that doesn't make them incompetent.
To be "incompetent" is to make a product that has a ridiculous amount of unchecked bugs and glitches and is near impossible to play.
The games release with few bugs and the graphics have been bumped up significantly from the previous generation.
There have been significant upgrades to game systems, UI, online play, and balancing. The gameplay, especially in the competitive scene, has continued to be sophisticated enough that Pokemon TH-camrs can (eventually) win with unconventional teams. GameFreak is not incompetent.
What I'm trying to say here is, either you've never actually played a truly shitty game filled to the brim with bugs, you're finally tired of Pokemon after playing it for years and years (and therefore are unable to see anything good in it), or you're trying to give GameFreak a 1-star review when your actual opinion is actually a 3-star review...
That being said, you are really salty.
Just stop playing Pokemon if you dislike GameFreak so much, you're just wasting your time whining about it.
That's what I did for like 3 years after how disappointed I was in USUM. Now that I'm back I'm realizing the games are a lot more beautiful and fun than what the SwSh haters made it seem...

I think you're the first Pokémon TH-camr I managed to find who understands _exactly_ how I feel about BD/SP's specific chibi art style. I don't really _hate_ how this specific chibi style looks, and I do feel like I'm getting more used to them as time goes by. But I am disappointed by it feels really safe and _too_ faithful to the point where it feels kinda dated and unnecessary, as the latest Pokémon games are capable of having stuff like realistically-scaled human models in the overworld now.
I do think Sw/Sh seem disappointing based on many TH-cam videos about it and admittedly never actually played them out of disinterest of both those titles and the franchise these days... but I admit that I would have loved to see Sinnoh remade to the capability that Sw/Sh had with fully scaled overworld trainer/NPC models. It would have been as exciting as seeing Gold/Silver remade in the same engine and style as D/P/Pt for HG/SS, and Ruby/Sapphire remade with X/Y's flair for OR/AS. These remakes (as well as the first remake, FR/LG) were good ways of introducing older titles to a newer audience, without giving them an experience that feels too dated for said audience by adding in quality-of-life features and such. They were also great ways for older fans to revisit past regions and look back on how much Game Freak has grown since those original titles.
So it was a bit sad to see that BD/SP will not follow suit with past Pokémon remakes by going as safe and "faithful" as possible, instead of taking some cues from Sw/Sh and adding some occasional creative risks with new content. This safe, "remasters-parading-as-remakes" direction really doesn't give fans who still own the original D/P (or even the slightly better Pt) games a real reason to buy these "remakes".
Anyway, thanks for this really entertaining and well-edited video. I also really liked your "The Man Behind the Sinnoh Remakes" and "why you miss the old Pokemon games" videos. Those videos were great too and I shared them on a Discord server or two. Keep up the good work!!

@@LewtwoYT - Sorry for the late reply, but you're very welcome!!
I've been spending some time in some of these comment sections over the past few days and it got me thinking about something. Many of these comments are confused as to how some people like me think BD/SP look more like remasters than remakes, saying that OR/AS had a lot of identical-looking locations like in BD/SP's trailer. But I've been looking back at some past trailers/announcements for past remakes and at least those videos made it very clear about what to expect for these games. Since these comments specifically noted OR/AS, I looked back at the first trailer for that game, and even that teaser showed off new content, notably new redesigns of the characters and new Mega Evolutions for the Hoenn starters.
Do you plan on making a video about Pokémon trailers or something? I think that looking past trailers and the first impressions they gave would be something worth talking about in a video.

Really instead of remaking D/P they should have skipped straight to Platinum, but they will never do that because forcing solo players to buy and play the game twice just to fill out their pokedex literally almost doubles their income.
Also imho, D/P could have been better on certain things but i would hardly call it unfinished, just a little lacking. I really wish they actually improved the secret base mechanic, like letting you place planters in your base to grow berries.

I think the main issue with the Sinnoh remakes is an issue that happens also when things are translated from one language to another. One option is to translate the words directly. You lose some of the nuance of the original language, like feelings or humor, but you have a 'perfect' translation. The alternative is to translate the meaning of the words, which captures the feeling and intent of the original text/speaking but isn't as faithful to the exact wording. Remakes should translate the feeling and intent. The Sinnoh remakes feel like a port, not a remake.

You will not understand the text because leaving out humor or feelings will let you to not understand the other parts intentions. The fans wanted a faithful remake. I know this is hard to believe but gamefreak always listens to the fans. It just takes a couple years to see it because gamefreak is always working on 1 or 2 games when they release one. Seeing time restrictions placed on them they can't go back and add these new feedback to games they're already working on so they take this feedback when they start a new game. So what were seeing rn with BDSP is the feedback they got from ORAS. Literally every fan who hated the game was louder than the ones who loved it. Idk if you guys can remember the internet back then when they released but for a whole 2 years video upon video was made about how gamefreak screwed the pooch on this remake.

This is a great summary of my own thoughts. In many Gens (particularly 4-6), I’ve enjoyed the first game but enjoy the remakes/third versions that come even more, as they polish things up, give more content, take mechanics from before and make them more interesting.
New forms, new routes, post game content, altered/deepened story elements, and several other factors make games like HGSS, Platinum, BW2, and ORAS shine to me.
Based one what they’ve shown off so far for BDSP? It looks like none of that is going to be their focus. I think the words you used of “Soul” and “What’s their purpose/risks?” summarize it well.
Like you say, I don’t think the games will be bad? I mean, I went back and replayed Platinum just last year and had a lot of fun with it even all these years later. The originals are still good, so if it’s truly 1-1 it won’t be outright terrible? But it still looks like it will fall so short of what it feels like it could be... like you say, a lot of regressing just for “the sake of faithfulness”, when newer quality of life stuff could make things look/work much better, even if we put aside the art style...

We still have 2d-tile sets, albeit in 3d now. It's lazy in every way. I wanted a 3d complete remake of sinnoh. I wanted to see Dawn in 3d to match her concept art. The story and 1-dimensional characters are all probably going to be 1-to-1 as well. I do not get their desire to make a faithful remake... these games were not even great for their time, and they surely don't stand up now as great games. They should have improved upon them massively... full 3d environments... refine the story... add a lot more lore... etc. rather than regress. I'm so disappointed.

yes. i know its "ILCA" instead of "ICLA." i recorded this in my closet in just two hours. it was really warm shut up. i also didnt forget about Porygon2, Steelix Blissey etc, but it's a handful of evolutions VS like twenty so my point still stands about the risk through time invested into that concept
to add to this -- my point was that the Gen 4 evolutions had FAR more time to weigh on people's minds. Scyther -> Scizor was only a couple of years, but Magmar -> Magmortar was way longer for people to get attached. thought that was clear but I need to make a point like that more obvious next time

Just say it as one word, "Ilca" , like they did in the presentation. Then it won't happen again! =P

I think the fact that this is possibly the only noticeable error in the video stands to show how polished and well thought-out it is.

personally I would love a devolved version of the game in the style of fire red and leaf green or heck the orignals, but not everyone is happy with the dpp remakes, seeing it in the let's go or sun and moon style would have been amazing

Although I may not agree with all your opinions as I think the remakes look extremely promising, I'm going to support you all the way because your content on an objective level is absolutely flawless and I love it so much; from your editing, to your humour, to your overall presentation and formatting, you are a joy to watch and are so very entertaining. Keep up the fantastic work man, I am dropping a comment not only for the algorithm, but also because I wanted you to know that you are doing an amazing job and you should keep up the brilliant work! Kudos, man :)

Holy cow you've put my thoughts into words so perfectly, I agree with every single point you've mentioned.
It maybe early and a bit inappropriate to bring this up but if this is really what remakes are going to continue looking like it makes me more concerned for Black and White remakes.
Though perhaps something different will be done with how these are turning out, I guess we'll just have to wait and see what the future ultimately holds for remakes.
