I really wanna know the design inspirations/philosophies for the Ultra Beasts! Love how they're very abstract and break a lot of rules for how they usually design Pokemon, I guess how they went about Blaziken's human-ish design in the case of Gen 3

I was really happy about the fact with Colosseum’s composer; a lot of songs in the Orre games were fantastic; high energy battle themes to work out to; tense themes while writing; and calming themes to make me feel safe and at home.
I’m glad someone on the team was passionate about these games and would like to make another; they use a lot of strategies that are still used today and what’s been added since can only expand on what they can do.

I like how the Genious Sorority devs actually took into account that kids who were fans of pokemon in the late 90's are going to be older now and interested in more complex RADICAL settings and visuals, different from GF usual thought process of designing games for the same kids that never age I guess, or not even at least having a separate series that tries different tones

@@whiile1239 mystery dungeon is a clear spinoff that plays nothing like the main games. As a kid i thought XD and Colloseum were main games because they were litterally that good. (And as far as effort is concerned a side by side of Colloseum vs Let's Go aninimations is easy to find, especially double kick where in lets go its rotate to face target, hop, rotate back to 0°, rotate to face target, hop, rotate to 0°. In Colloseum a kabutops swings forward on its scythe arms to kick with both feet at once, even compared to SwSh the animations of Colloseum and XD just have so much more weight and effort put into them. Ignoring the obvious difference in resolution due to time of creation.)
I think the fact the older animations hold up (and can be argued as being better), is a testament to the quality of the games. Add in other factors like team composition, level curves, general difficulty, ect and its not hard to see why fans want a return of something challenging.
I don't see the grittyness as what makes them good, its just an aesthetic, the quality is in the objective underlying mechanics and polish. (The first boss, miror B has a rain team that is just missing thunder to be a competitively viable team, grant it is mainly the lotad line)

If you're the target demographic for Colosseum today, you weren't born yet when the game originally released. If you were the target demographic for Gen 1 when it released, a Pokemon game targeted towards you today would revolve around paying a mortgage and starting a family.
I think the Colosseum series definitely should have continued, it's a type of Pokemon spinoff that we've been missing for a while - but the reason GameFreak keeps developing games for 11 year olds is because there are always new 11 year olds lol.

So in other words, if it weren't for Gen 3 originally being a reboot, it's likely we wouldn't have the traditions of each gen having a Pikachu-clone, regional bird, and regional bug as they simply would've been filled by their Gen 1 counterparts each game. That's an interesting thing to think about; imagine Gen 4 without Staraptor, or Gen 5 without Scolipede.
Also, Colosseum and XD's devs not knowing Pokemon kinda explains why it was more like a traditional RPG. Would be really cool to see GF do that again, even if it turns out bad, if only to see a unique and fresh take from people outside the community. Sad to see they don't really have plans for Orre though.

The funny thing about regional birds is that Pidgy was sort of the odd one out during the first three generations. Taillow and Hoothoot we're both two stage lines, which would almost make one think Spearow would be the Kanto regional bird, if it weren't for Pidgy being the one found on the first route. It wasn't until Starly in Sinnoh that a regional bird was three stages again, and not until Fletchling in Kallos that three stage early game birds unquestionably outnumbered the two stage lines.

This isn’t something I’d consider to be a Pokémon title.”
I genuinely loved Gale of Darkness (haven’t experienced Colosseum), but I’m thinking about the perspective of the devs and how they view the work from someone that did what they wanted with “their baby.” There are similar stories in other industries where Buzz Lightyear was poached by Disney from Pixar to make a 2D animated series and the guys at Pixar were NOT happy about it to say the least. They wouldn’t even remotely acknowledge it as an official expansion to Buzz’s lore until decades later, and it’s relevancy died out until Buzz got a stand-alone movie made by Pixar themselves.

Well, they're going to need to revitalize their series soon. Lots of new monster collector games are inbound and drawing away fans. And the Digimon series just released Digimon Survive, where calling it dark is an extreme understatement. hell, even the anime has gone down that route with ghost Game and Digimon being far from shy of eviserating people grusomely (multiple instances of dismemberment, instant cremation and one poor sap getting his flesh dissolved and skull crunched). Pokemon just seems stagnant and refusing to adapt.
Hell, relying on their youthe isn't goign to cut it anymore in some areas. In japan, Yokai Watch has basically surplanted them for children. And a lot of the new mon collectors and older series are appealing to the older fans. Let's remember that the Legend game that came out recently was something very different and was a far more exciting release than the D/P remakes (which feel as if people quickly dropped them way too fast). At this point we're just craving something different from the same tired formula.
It's fine if they want to continue the progression of the main series with the same formula. but I think another game like the two from the GCn days are needed again. Heck, and with the current age of fans lately, make the game rated T. Rather than my opponent sending me to the last healing center, make it evident that the Scizor that just swept my team proceeded to use their claws on my neck and load from a last save. Or that losing a major battle resulted in things going horribly wrong in the proceeding non-standard game over.

      @lenlimbo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +75

@@rpgfanatic9719 I've played again this year colosseum, and I disagree.
Pokemon now a days is formulaic. You get a route mostly lineal (maybe with one detour to get an item, probably a potion or pokeball), then you get a town with a few buildings, and only two of them with something interesting (besides the pokemon center). Maybe the game's team appear to cause some trouble, you kick their sorry arses because its what the player does, no matter if the team is composed or evil gangsters, extremists or just noisy fans, and continue with the next route... which is the same as the earlier one, but with a different decoration. Rinse and repeat. Then almost at the end of the game, you save the world, beat the Champion (who may or may not have been involved in the story, and, to a degree, kudos to Sword and Shield for having a competent champion that almost made the player redundant), and the post game... which may be the most interesting part of the game. And by the way, you know the format Pokemon Company uses for their official tournaments, double battles? Well, you will be lucky if you found 10 double battles in the game. Maybe ONE gym leader will be a doubles.
Colosseum was different from the very beggining. Instead of a new trainer, you are a veteran one with two eeveelutions at almost level 30 with a moveset focused on colaboration between them, not just brute force as you would in the adventure. You don't casually find the game's team causing problems, you MAKE problems for the game's team by stealing their pokemon stealing gizmo and blowing up their base, and then proceeds to make problems for the OTHER team by rescueing the one character that can help dismantle their plans, who, by the way, acompanies you through the rest of the game. Also, the game is all about double battles, which teaches you the power and importance of moves like reflect or helping hand. The towns are alive, and most characters' lives aren't hyper focused on pokemon, or being tutorials for the player.
In a few words, the game respects the player's intelligence, not only by not hand holding them so much, but also by creating a believable world where not every NPC is obsesed with pokemon or with telling what you can do with the pokemon or the game.
The limited rooster of pokemon also forced the players to be more strategic. The first time I beat the game, by example, I didn't use meditite/medicham at all, because I didn't know what their ability really does, and their stats looks lackluster. But if you know that it doubles it's attack stat, you suddenly gets a crystal cannon that, properly trained, can oneshot almost any pokemon that doesn't resist it's attacks. You can bet I used it through most of the game in this second run. I also choose Quilava as the Johto started I rescued first, because Bayleaf is... well, Bayleaf, and while Croconaw is probably the most powerful of the three, there are good water mons at the beggining (like Quagsire), while there aren't any good fire mons until Entei besides Quilava.

In my opinion, Matsuda and the Pokémon Company are being very shortsighted in discounting Colosseum and XD style games. I fully maintain that the only reason they didn't sell was that they were ahead of their time. Were the two remade/remastered today, in a market craving something new and mature from Pokémon, I have little doubt they'd sell like hotcakes. Hopefully the successful experiment that was PL:A has inspired the company to take risks.

That Hoenn new:old Pokémon ratio is pretty much perfect. It makes the region feel fresh but still familiar. Sinnoh and Unova both felt similar, which is why Gen 3-5 are usually regarded as Pokémon’s true golden age. God I miss those charming chibi pixel graphics.

Unova tipped too far past that balance, though, and just gave up on it, which was a huge mistake. If you're like me and don't like most of the Unovan designs you can't really appreciate those games because you're stuck with a ton of Pokemon you probably don't want to use.
Had they implemented more older Pokemon into the mid-to-late-game areas, I think it would have gone a long way towards making them more palatable. No matter how much people talk about how Gen 5 were the greatest Pokemon games, I can't help but roll my eyes.
It's not that I don't understand why people like them. I just don't think it was enough because for all of the Pokemon added, more than any other generation (even Gen 1 just barely came close with 151), I can't stand building a team in it because the style doesn't fit my personal preference.

I wanna say that I heard somewhere (probably from this channel) that Masuda thinks the only reason people wanted Stadium and Colosseum were because they wanted to see Pokemon in 3d, which is why they don't plan on ever making any more games like them. I feel that's missing the point. Stadium, Stadium 2, and Battle Revolution could be seen as a second endgame for their generations, as they were entirely battles with different rules and required strategy to beat. If they were to bring back the Battle Frontier without actually having it in the main-line games, that would be the perfect way. As for why they don't get re-releases, I think it's because the models and battle animations would make people realize the current games are severely lacking. All the Stadium games have gorgeous models who's battle animations make them seem alive and dynamic camera angles that amplify that feeling. Compared to main-line's animations where the models look static more than half the time, the quality just doesn't compare.

The fresh perspective was a brilliant move that Pokemon Company never really tried to capitalize on since Gale of Darkness. Plus the difficulty factor was amped up making you rely on asist moves to fight double battles. You really had to strategize in those battles. The experience was great and it's why I considered the GameCube games my favorite of the series.

The reason Pyrite Town’s colosseum was meant to be a huge globe was almost certainly a reference to the old mining town of Globe to the east of Phoenix, where the mining boom started when someone found a near-perfect sphere of ore in a nearby stream.

Like in Collesium, you can only obtain Pokemon by taking them from others as Shadow Pokemon which significantly cut down on making varied teams since you could only obtain specific Pokemon in a very specific order. And since Shadow Pokemon only used Shadow Rush and there was no Wild Battles, it made progression really tedious.
Even the darker tone doesn't really do much as it's only really used for set dressing rather than impacting the story.

@@IBeforeAExceptAfterK I see where you're coming from and even agree with many of your points. But I don't think my points are unreasonable.
For one, something being refreshing can still be done in a lacklustre or interesting way. The novelty of it being different doesn't override that.
As an example from other franchises, Call of Duty went Futuristic between 2014-2017. Even though it was a refreshing change of pace from the traditional "boots on the ground" COD games, much of the playerbase disliked it so much that WW2 and MW2019 sold crazy well as a "return to form". Recently, Assassin's Creed Mirage is said to be going back to an older style of AC because even though the RPG ACs were "refreshing" in a sense, many people felt they didn't reflect the actual appeal of AC.
Basically "change for the sake of change" isn't inherently a good thing. Collesium doing different things doesn't excuse how it does some of those things quite poorly.
Like, one of the main appeals of a Pokemon game is the surprinsgly deep RPG mechanics and teambuilding options you have. It's one of the reasons why hardcore Nuzelockes are so popular. Hardcore Nuzelockes put a lot more self imposed restrictions, but these are still fun because they make you use more creative and unconventional strategies. The difficulty and restrictions here facilitate that.
But in Collesium, the opposite happens. Because XP and money is so stingy, and you have so few resources, the game loses its varied and deep RPG mechanics. Spamming Shadow Rush over and over again from the only 2 decently levelled Mons you have because that's the only ok option you have is quite boring. You don't really get to outthink or outplay your opponents. You either grind or use basic options.
Speaking of which, unlike the main series games, grinding is a lot more common in Collesium. You have to spend a lot of your time grinding, either to get what few scraps of XP and money there are, or to purify your Shadow Mons which takes a really long time. And these don't really encourage any creative solutions. Like, there aren't as many challenge runs of Collesium for a reason, the game's design discourages varied playthroughs.
Like, there are difficult Rom Hacks like Incelement Emerald and Radical Red that enforce level caps and give you few encounters at first. But they still give you resources to implement your own creative solutions to problems, and they don't require absurd grinding.
Plus, the story of Collesium, like I said, even if it's darker in tone, it only uses that for set dressing. There is no real influence on the darker tone on the characters or how the story progresses. You can get the same impact by reading Pokedex entries in the main games.
Not to mention that even thematically, the game's use of Shadow Pokemon kinda conflicts with its gameplay. The story wants Shadow Pokemon to be something the player purifies as a way of making these Pokemon go from being corrupted to pure and true versions of themselves. It wants the player to come to learn about these Pokes as individuals and grow closer to them. But the game's mechanics do the opposite. Spamming Shadow Rush doesn't really allow you to learn more of these mons. Plus, the limited resources discourage training up and purifying many Pokemon.

@@FraserSouris Nice essay there, buddy. I can tell you feel quite strongly about this. But have you considered that your lack of enjoyment might have had something to do with your play style? Because a lot of your complaints seem to boil down to "I played in an unfun way, and to my surprise the whole game ended up not being fun". If all you did was spam Shadow Rush and grind because you couldn't be assed to do anything more complex than unga bunga your way through your problems, that's on you. I never had any of the issues you're complaining about, but then again I'm not a scrub. There's a reason this game is only doubles, and it's not so that you can spam two attacking moves every turn. For all your talk about Pokemon's surprisingly deep RPG mechanics, it sure as shit doesn't sound like you bothered to make good use of them.

I have expressed desire in having Colosseum and XD be remade for the Switch, possibly in a bundle. With the current meta, it would certainly make the game more playable, especially since the change in Gen 4, where an attack's power was determined whether it was a contact or special attack and using the Attack and Special Attack stats as a reference, and not if the type is physical or special. That changed the usability of many Pokémon in a big way.
I don't know if Genius Sonority still have the chops to make an RPG that pushes the limits of the Switch, but they should be given a chance, especially after being reduced to developing Pokémon puzzle games.

For someone who's been following Pokemon extensively for as long as I have, including trying to piece together information on development, I don't think I have *ever* found a video with this much knowledge I didn't know before watching it, especially not about my childhood generation. That's a pretty massive feat for anyone, and I tip my hat. I've had a lot to talk about with people about this one and I'll certainly be sharing it more!

Literally my favorite pokemon, and honestly the only Fire starter I'd still actually pick over both of its Water and Grass counterparts looking back, though Fennekin would've been the second if Delphox did more to wow me. I'm usually a member of the Water Tribe overall.

I actually really appreciate the goldfish/painted chick reference with torchic. Goldfish are still one of the most abused animals in the pet industry today- probably one of the top 3. That, and I really like how hoenn was mostly new pokemon. Gen 3 was my favorite.

Shinichi Hiromoto has done some insane manga that has a distinct style to them. He has a love for post apocalyptic settings and crazy bikes. As a word of warning the works are pretty questionable. I do hope he gets a chance to do another pokemom game in the future, or at least as a small credit if we ever revisit the Ore region.

Incredibly detailed video about some interesting development topics of hoenn! Hearing from these devs back then about the type of game planing and their ideas in the early 2000's is very refreshing in a modern world where pokemon games are generic engineered corporate cash-cows designed to to rake in coin. Enjoyed a lot thank you :)

To this very day, from Red all the way to Sword (and everything inbetween), Colosseum is definitely one of my favorite pokemon experiences. The tough battles as a kid really allowed me to strategize in new ways and actually truly think of every single stat/etc. The cross-console trading helped a lot thanks to the GBA connectors. I'd train my Umbreon and Espeon and others in Ruby (and breed them for the other Eevee game for the Pokedex too) then return them to the Colosseum when they were fully ready to battle. But the 100 battle part...my gosh the hours I spent on that part was insane, but so satisfying when beating it.😂

The thing about the torchic taking inspiration from painted chicks, this also happens in Mexico. My parents-in-law got one of these for my then 3-4 year old sister-in-law. It was painted in pink so she decided to call it "Mermelada" (jam/mermalade). She, thinking that it was real mermalade, proceded to try and eat it. Fortunately she didn't bite it or anyhting and the chick grew into a chicken, living for 3-4 years. Pretty good considering that those chicks don't survive for more than 7 months after being purchased.

@Puppy2017 If you’re asking how it happened on two opposite sides of the planet at the same time, this was less than a hundred years ago. People probably heard about it happening in another country and thought it sounded fun, before people decided it was inhumane. If you’re asking from a moral standpoint, people didn’t realize it was inhumane at the time
