The Terrifying Pace of Modern Pokemon

  • Pokemon Scarlet & Violet were announced just a month ago, but so far Generation 9 has shown off plenty of warning signs that may prevent it from being a follow-up to Pokemon Legends Arceus, or even Sword & Shield. What about the new starter Pokemon designs, and how do Sprigatito, Fuecoco and Quaxly stack up to those that came before?

Not gonna lie, I was seriously hoping there would be no new gen this year exactly for this very reason. It's disheartening to see the series' potential still being squandered because they're THAT afraid of missing deadlines.

    • @jenniferhamels1176
      @jenniferhamels1176 2 ปีที่แล้ว +259

You're not fully grasping the financial consequence for missing deadlines for the Pokemon Company. Due to The Pokemon Company basically interconnecting the entire brand, there is just too many variables that would negatively affect the brand financially if delayed. If Pokemon was just videos games, there should be no issue to delay the games. But this is simply not the case.
The Pokemon brand's largest sector is merch. You simply can't delay Manufacturing merch on the scale the Pokemon brand requires without major financial losses.

    • @moltz4866
      @moltz4866 2 ปีที่แล้ว +421

@@jenniferhamels1176 Then that speaks even worse for all involved, because it leaves the impression they're no longer interested in delivering a product with all the quality and polish it deserves.
If deadlines can no longer be moved, then it's only logical to invest on far more staff to work on the games. And while evidence points out GF has been slowly doing that, their recent endeavors show they're still falling short.
Also, like Lewtwo mentions at one point in the video, it would be best for everyone that gen 9's director is someone who works well under pressure, meaning Ohmori is sadly not the man the devs need.

    • @jenniferhamels1176
      @jenniferhamels1176 2 ปีที่แล้ว +127

@@moltz4866 Unfortunately the brand model has been like that since the creation of TPC. No one expected it to balloon this massive. Nintendo basically dropped the ball. They could have easily been the sole owner or at least majority owner of Pokemon if they just went all in during gen 1, instead of going to their "cousin" Creatures to help out. Because of adding a 3rd company to the mix the whole ownership of Pokemon became convoluted.
Actually GF hasn't been slowly doing that. They have been very adamant in keeping the studio small. Game Freak's unwillingness to expand is a huge fault of theirs.

I feel like a crucial element countering the argument of "Well, Pokemon has ALWAYS had a 3/4 year gap between flagship releases" without how developing for a Gameboy to Gameboy Color to Gameboy Advance is far, FAR easier than going from even XY to SM and esp USUM to SWSH
3D games, especially largescale 3D open world games, take a far FAR longer to make and polish than what was possible on sprite and tile base systems they used back in the 90s to late DS period. It's probably in part why the games "Haven't been good since the jump to 3D", the higher ups still hold onto this model of 90s game design/development that just isn't sustainable in the realm of high poly 3d

Yeah, pretty much. GameFreak just seems to speedrun through games. While I personally don't mind Violet and Scarlet getting announced it's the fact that they are coming out this year that is concerning. Rushing to get the game out is never good, nobody wants a cyberpunk finish. It would have been better if Scarlet and Violet were coming out either in late 2023 or early 2024 at the very least. Like we all clearly saw some major flaws in Gen. 8 SWSH such as the visible mouse cursor in the ending credits.
Even then, if they were afraid that PLA wasn't gonna do well, they should have scoped things out more. It would have helped them make better decisions in the long run regarding PLA. While giving them more time and getting more money through PLA DLC or something.
It probably would also help GameFreak to hire a lot more people into their company specifically so instead of 2 teams, they have like 4-5+ if they wish to keep this timed schedule. For example, 2 teams planning the next game, 1 team to maintain the current game, 1 team for remakes/other pokemon related games, and another team to organize work from dev teams in other companies. Maybe even add a 6th team for purely quality control. Pokemon has gotten too famous and now it suffers from it. T^T

This was a wonderful video! One aspect that got me thinking was when you mentioned how the SV starters feel like they're going back to the old style of starter design. While I get what you mean I would argue the only reason gen 8's starters came in with personalities was due to them being the only trio to be revealed with a CGI video instead of just official art and game footage. As a result their personalities had a bigger spotlight. I'm also worried the fact the site gives them personality traits means they will have personalities coded into them.

    • @Jordan13299

They absolutely will. By all means I prefer the old starter designs but historically, the quadrupedal “monster” starters like Venu, Meganium, Swampert, and Torterra have all been hands down the least popular final evolutions of their generation.
Gamefreak struck absolute gold with Greninja. Despite Delphox and Chesnaught pretty much being universally hated, Greninja did the one thing no other starter did. Surpass Charizard in popularity (at least in Japan) and Greninja is rife with personality, a very clear design direction and a “prop” (that being his water shurikens.)
I think because of how successful Greninja was, they’re unlikely to go back to the old “monstrous” starter designs but we can kind of see that design philosophy of bipedal Pokemon with “props” come into play ever since Gen 3 which is coincidentally the second most popular batch of starters after Gen 1.

This is a great video, thanks to it feeling dense for a 14 minute run time. Like I felt you covered about a half hour worth of material in under 15 minutes spectacularly. Even the brief discussion surrounding the new starters, and starter design was done so well.
Of course I feel discussing about starter designs can be a video by themselves, since there is a lot of material to work there. The topic points I would chose for an essay is the gradual anthromorphism that particularly the final evolutions has gotten; mainly in gen 6, although gen 3 has some anthromorphic elements as well. (I would also answer why I feel the designers are shifting in this direction). The shift from first stages being more characterized animals to more cartoony depictions of animals. (Fuecoco and Totodile are perfect candidates for this topic as a comparison piece. The gen 8 starters in general fit this idea as well). Then I would dissect why the designers are heavily emphasizing a theme for a single starter. Basically why is Incineroar a wrestler, Chesnaught a knight/juggernaught, Inteleon is a spy, and so forth.
While that discussion isn't the main topic of the video, it is the subject that lingered post watch.

I think you really hit the nail on the head. I found Arceus Legends to be a nice breathe of fresh air as even despite it's flaws, it was probably one of the first Pokemon games I've played in awhile that really recaptured that "magic" for me. I think the game clearly showed that GF isn't lacking passion or commitment but are rather in the unfortunate circumstance of being another cog in the machine that is the Pokemon franchise. I think GF obviously wants to have more time to focus on these new elements being built into the modern games, but it's clear that they have to work with such strict deadlines that it's hard for the games to breathe for that fun, original idea.
Arceus Legends felt like the first time in AWHILE that GF was allowed to just work on a passion project for the Pokemon franchise. It's not perfect, but there's a lot of love that goes into that game and you can feel it brimming with the world they created for Hisui. SV currently has me feeling a bit more iffy not because I think it's bad or is going to be bad, but because they're taking such a drastic change in the direction for the series not only for the overall look of the games, but the character design as well. It'll definitely take me awhile to get used to because I'm a Sugimori-style die-hard fan. lol It's practically what inspired my artwork.
Overall, looking forward to the other videos you make!

And then you have companies like SE where every new major game release takes 4-7 years or more to churn out but the conglomerate’s big enough with many different teams that you can get a vast multitude of smaller side projects done in-between with enough quality to be sleeper hits of their own. Ultimately GF leads should really put a brake on the series, but instead they choose to continue forcing their team into this endless 3 year development cycle across two teams to effectively churn out yearly and/or bi-yearly releases. (3 year of course=yr 1 while new game is finishing development, yr 2 main development of title to create preliminary showcase content, yr 3 remainder of development and beginning of development of next project.) And what makes it even more damning is that aspects of the brandholders, particularly TPC/TPCi have literally come out and said the decision for new title development was all on GF’s end, and obviously with how Nintendo usually operates, they clearly have no say either on this (and would likely shoot for a longer window in most cases).
This just leaves Creatures as the last major party involved and honestly, I doubt they would have anything to say on this unless their cut of every release is barely enough to manage the servers where the main models are stored and if that’s the case I could see why they’d have some clout over influencing GF’s development decisions because they can just say if new game X isn’t made so that GF can pay them for the servers in time, the servers will be cut due to financial reasons and any further assistance with character development from Creatures would be void, leaving GF up the creek without a paddle due to the loss of basically everything that’s used as their main tool to sell the series. The only thing though is that this sort of thought process is also inherently flawed since more new games=more new Pokemon/forms which in turn means more server space needed and thus even more cost to maintain.

I agree I wasn't too thrilled myself when I saw we were getting a new generation at the three year mark. Granted I suspect that decision was made before anybody knew how well received Arcues would be even so this makes me worried that yet again they are crunching to get it out the door and as you stated crowbarring in the well received parts of Arcues which would make it feel out of place. I can take or leave the MC designs (which to be honest is always how I've been since G/S). I get what you're saying about the Gen 8 designs and such though I am horrifically bias because I like sporty like designs and secret agents.
I'm never going to be good about some of the more technical misgivings as my general reaction to when people point them out is "eh" because unless they are latterly smashing to pixeled pixels in my face I really don't care as it doesn't impact my playthroughs. I am concerned about how well the open world will be done, mostly because of my aversion to open world/sandbox games as it would have to have an extreme hook that allows me to ignore that allergy to enjoy the game. Arcues did a good job of that by looping what I like to do in a game (mainly the Pokedex and the multiple ways to fill it out) so I wasn't feeling chained to doing one thing and going around in the world was in of itself fun because of stuff popping up like the distortion world spaces or the outbreaks of random Pokemon or if I'm feeling truly masochistic hunting down the phany packs of fallen trainers because they always end up in such "safe" areas (Arcues help me)
Pokemon games as of late seem like we are watching them develop in real time. Rather than having that gap between games where when we see the improvements they shine brighter than the games imperfections. How things are the sticking points of games don't have any chance to fade into memory so when people (my opinion) see that they are not either properly addressed or worse still there it causes people to tunnel vision harder and harder and the legitimate good points get overshadowed and it becomes nearly impossible to have any kind of nuanced discussion about the games without tying a brick to a bat and smashing it into someone's teeth.
As always time will tell how this game comes out. There is stuff I like from the first trailer, stuff I'm not so keen on and other things I'm just going to have to go "Just going to wait and see,"

Pokemon is a game that needs more time to simmer, more time to develop, and more time for different players to sink into it for it to have multiple games within a short amount of time. I think you effectively covered a lot of what the community is feeling and critiquing it as well for making excuses/covering up.
I did really like the previous art styles for the humans. Trying to be open minded they’re doing something new, but it does miss one of the signatures of the series. I was also on the end of not wanting a new gen to come out in 2022..just hope the tight time crunch will be addressed soon.
I also liked how you covered the starter designs effectively in a short amount of time as that was also in the current conversation. The personality over Animal decision has been upsetting one of my best friends. Even though I like Scorbunny and Sobble, their evolutions are not my favorite haha.

Without wanting to override your criticism of them, there's something I see catastrophically few people talk about regarding the main character designs in SV.
Whether you like them or not, I don't see anyone actually talk about *why* they are like this, something really important to understand the core art direction for the games as a whole. While they're definitely a departure from what we're used to, and I myself feel mixed about them, their designs are based on 60s - 90s anime, primarily from studio Zuiyo Eizo (today Nippon Animation), that were specifically produced for european markets, and found major success all across the continent, but even moreso in the mediterranean. I think this definitely reframes Game Freak's character art style choices as something done for a more genuine, coherent, and slightly nostalgic artistic expression of a mediterranean Pokémon region, rather than a frankly mind boggling departure from their previous character design ethos.

Thank you for another amazing video! I feel like originally nuanced talking points and arguments tend to get spread out and recirculated by the fandom until they lose all meaning, but I feel like you've always kept the original meaning intact and truly work to understand the implications of those points rather than jumping to a conclusion.
I'm a bit concerned about Pokemon falling back into its old patterns with how SV have been revealed so far, but I do hope that future titles will take the reception of Legends and SV into consideration.
My first points aside, I've never quite understood the argument of Pokemon being too humanoid or having too much personality. I appreciate that you actually took the time to dissect the argument rather than just saying that Sprigatito shouldn't stand up with no regard for the design philosophy of Pokemon and the fact that bipedal doesn't always equal humanoid, but at the same time I'm still trying to understand the argument more? Pokemon with distinct personalities have always existed and while I wouldn't want every Pokemon to be like that (and agree that 8th gen starter evos needed more design variety), I find those designs fun and creative, and even find thinking about how they would exist in the wild to be an interesting thought exercise. For example Machoke has been there since gen 1, is characterized as a wrestler, and even has some pretty funny interactions in Legends. Is the issue that people specifically don't want the starters to have that sort of personality, like you mentioned at one point? In which case, Empoleon, a Pokemon characterized as a proud creature and based off a real person exists and is fairly well liked.
Perhaps I'm looking into this too deeply but I've been thinking about it for a while and I'm just curious about where this opinion comes from. Anyone feel free to chime in with their thoughts.
Anyway, tangent aside thank you once again for such a brilliant video. I'm looking forward to your thoughts on BDSP.

Glad you enjoyed! To clarify my point a bit, I think that Pokemon are totally fine to be personality driven, it’s just that when it overtakes the basic concept of a starter Pokemon, I end up having an issue with it. A starter Pokemon has always been intended as a beloved cornerstone of your team, so to see character traits forced onto your very first from the beginning not only feels really forced, but strictly intended for marketing, which feels pretty soulless in an ostensibly child-oriented series

I've never really had a problem with any starter evolutions except for like 2 (Emboar and Delphox) And even then I don't hate them, i'm just tired of this design philosophy since it's been going on since Gen 6, arguably Gen 5.

That or maybe make games based entirely around the Pokémon and place all the humans 6 feet under. If they want to characterize the Pokémon so much, why not do it in a setting that will actually matter like the mystery dungeon series? Expand a bit more on the story of the species the series is named after rather than just how evil trainers abuse Pokémon and what other trainers do to stop it by pointing their drooling MMO goons in the right direction. But eh, maybe Pokémon are better left as personality devoid golems so we can make our own personalities for 'em.
Also to hell with the customization for my anthromorphic plank of wood that's supposed to be a human, where's the customization options for the Pokémon themselves to help them fit their nature rather than the predetermined character their designer made them to be.

This would allow them to ensure the quality of what they do put out on release day is consistent and GameFreak get a bit of time to breath. 5:22 YES I’m glad someone as learned on the topic of these games as you mentions this, I haven’t loved a starter in what feels like ages because they’re not creatures-these somewhat believable monster-animals hybrids-they’re characters or mascots first
There’s still plenty of reason to fear any or all of these new starters could evolve once again into silly, uncanny mascot characters who you could scarcely imagine roaming a grassy field or natural habitat; but at least they’re off to a solid start

    • @zeromythosver.
      @zeromythosver. 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I will add to this though:
Despite being clearly designed after a typical RPG rogue or archer, I think the Rowlet line-start to finish-is the undisputed best overall starter line since Gen. V, the leap to 3D, and the larger emphasis on character over creature
It’s fairly believable and/or conceivable as some species of owl from start to finish, never going too far over the line into wacky territory, because it’s not like Gen. VIII where you can’t imagine how these creatures would be sporty, spy-like, or play drums without the existence of people
Decidueye isn’t excessively humanoid, and doesn’t need humankind or the story of Robin Hood to exist just to justify its own existence (even though it’s ofc not as blatantly wild as something like a Venusaur or Torterra)
But it’s pretty telling when I think the only starter final evo who’s close to that line between too human/character rather than being well across it is the best, that they’ve come much too far from the classic series design philosophy that gave us Gen. I-V’s starters

I was soooooo disappointed when Violet and Scarlet were revealed. Not even necessarily for their content, just because it shattered my hope that the next mainline game would be an advancement and improvement upon legends arceus.
It just sucks, these games deserve the time they need. Way back when the dex cut in SwSh was announced, I wasn't bothered in the slightest. I'd figured the day would eventually come that including every Pokémon would just be too much from a development perspective, and it actually made me hopeful about the game we would get.
Course, I was disappointed in that respect. There's no reason the Pokémon devs should be on such tight time lines. This is the biggest media franchise in the world, the cost of an extended development period doesn't even dent the merch sales alone! At this level of success, they should be setting up their dev team to make the best possible project. Instead they're working to the bone for reduced quality.
It's genuinely sad to see, not just because I enjoy the games at their best, but also because it's becoming more and more apparent how disposable the industry thinks its talent is.
That's why this stuff is important to discuss and criticize. Because this isn't the result of people that don't know how to make a game, or people that lack talent and skill. This is a symptom of the vice grip put on the labor behind these games, it's a sign that something is wrong behind the scenes. It's about having standards, for both media and people.

Honestly, what bothers me more than the pacing is how TINY the staff is for games of this pedigree and pace. Literally just a couple hundred. There are more pokemon in cut dex than the development cast for the largest videogame/multimedia franchise in HUMAN HISTORY.
If we got a new title every one or two years by the companies themselves, sure. I would love it if they would be hands on some Monolith Soft team devs or just new hires period.

I think more people need to understand that a bigger team doesn't equate to a better game, and there are plenty of case studies as to why this isn't the case (FFXIV is a good example)

FFXIV has a team of 264 and that's a whole MMO with JRPG level story in it. 200 isn't small but they can only do so much when given 3 years to build an entire game from scratch each time

If you want my two cents - and I'm only about 2 minutes into the video, so you might bring this up - I feel like Scarlet and Violet have been in development for some time, but Game Freak was nervous about the new style. So, they released Arceus as a kind of "Proof of Concept" using the engine from Scarlet and Violet as a baseline to reduce production time/costs. I feel that might be why they went the route of no hub areas aside from one town; they constructed that one location and just made a broad map for everything else. Then, they watched the popularity of Arceus and, more importantly, people's opinions about the new style of play.
Upon seeing Arceus gain popular acclaim for it's innovation, they pushed the "Full Steam Ahead" button on Scarlet and Violet, which had already gotten much of the coding work done, and now just needed it's skin and polish. Now, I know next to nothing about game development; I'm an author by trade, so I could tell you about the writing. But coding? Hooo boy, I struggle with basic macros in Final Fantasy, so I'm no expert. But from a marketing standpoint, it makes some degree of sense, and would go quite some distance to explain why the two seem so similar. Arceus was a dangerous gambit, completely altering the layout of the mainstream Pokémon games. If they'd made Scarlet and Violet without first testing the waters with Arceus and the game tanked, then they would be millions in the hole. But by testing the waters with a carbon copy that had less time put into it - not saying Arceus had no polish, but just that it feels like Scarlet and Violet are just a bigger, broader version of Arceus' design; or rather that Arceus is a carefully chosen slice of the concepts presented - Game Freak managed to see if those games were worth their continued investment, or if they should heel-turn the games back into a more classic-styled version.

It's a little bit... uhhh... "big-brain" for your stereotypical depiction of GF. But at this point a shot in the dark like this is far from unlikely, desperate situations and all that.

To be fair, through GameFreak, Pokemon is one of the biggest sellers for modern games. Consider, because of their general simplicity in design, Pokemon games can be churned out fairly quickly. Because of this, it has a very broad fanbase now, spanning multiple generations. Now, this isn't to say other franchises don't; Mario and Zelda are two others that immediately come to mind. But for every Mario and Pokemon, there is a Metroid.
Now, I'm not saying Metroid isn't a beloved series, but how long has it been since we received a mainstream Metroid game geared towards the younger demographic? It's players have grown up, and Nintendo uses Metroid to follow that generation. Pokemon, however, is in a very unique boat. It's fans span multiple generations, it's easy to produce, even easier to make toys and such for, bolstering it's overall net value... Nintendo might be the reason for this, overall, not GameFreak.

@@inkblooded1058 Oh no, I wasn't trying to roast GameFreak, forgive me if I gave that impresion off. Maybe I should have clarified it's the view a lot of Pokémon fans and "fans" have?
Now that you mention it, it's Nintendo (albeit how much of TPC is either N or GF or neither...). Merchandise, the card game, multiple mangas, the anime, the web shorts...
What I also tried to say (and again sorry for being unwillingly obtuse) at the end is that sometimes desperation will breed ingenuity, in this case PLA. It's just, after this many years, to get this distintion of the formula, hell, even Arceus' issues may indicate GF is even worse than we though.
To be clear, I'm not excusing the problems Pokémon has accumulated (nor trying to be hyperbolic about such), it's just that I'm kinda surprised to hear a voice that isn't doom and gloom.

No worries! Personally, I don't know the state of GameFreak right now. I'm more viewing this as an outside observer; my friend is a massive Pokemon fan and I learned about these things tangentially.
But given Pokemon's immense popularity, I can't imagine that it's development is even *mostly* in the hands of GameFreak. Yes, they're the company tasked with being the name of the brand, but as they're owned by Nintendo, and Nintendo is avid on keeping their most valuable projects in the green, it stands to reason that any drastic changes to the formula would need to be run by Nintendo.
With the immense popularity of Breath of the Wild's open-world concepts and the success of other games of a similar nature (Genshin Impact literally just stealing a lot of BotW's concepts) it isn't astounding that not only is Pokemon - a game about exploration, collecting, and grand adventure - would become an open world series, but that even the next 3D Mario game is being hinted at having an open-world concept. But in the case of Pokemon its a bit different.
While Pokemon played with the concept of a vast world, it never really tackled the idea of "Open World." While you could tackle the water, you couldn't swim under it. While you can fly, you could never progress off the beaten, linear path. However, games like Zelda and Mario, which relied heavily on 3D elements, were able to tackle similar topics in more depth. As such, their transitions into an open-world setting require less testing. But in Pokemon's case, changes to the mainstream formula were sometimes met with contrition. Games like Pokemon Snap and Pokemon GO were not a part of the mainstream series, the formula of which never changed all too much... Until Arceus. I find it more than coincidental that Arceus is coming out so shortly before these new releases, an feels almost like a tech-demo for the conceptual changes to the new meta... It just feels like a test to see how people would feel about Pokemon dipping their toes into an open-world concept.

100% agreed. I was shocked by the announcement of Scarlet & Violet because it's SO fast. I really really want more than anything for the studio to take much longer developing the next gen games, implementing the best & most beloved features from past gens and recognising the criticisms and fixing those; really having all the time and freedom to make the game they envision. No cut corners, no cop outs, no surprise additions retconned into the game in the last half of development. Let them put the time in and put out something completely polished, beautiful, exciting, and satisfying to play. They have the tools and money to make a truly AMAZING game but they just need the time and love put into it to do so, it's why I miss the old games so much. Well, I can dream, lol.

The only one I can think that follow that line is Yoshi P the head of FF14, dude makes sure his tightly knit team work with minimal crunch. Hell he gives them NORMAL work hours compared to the rest of japan
