  • Designing For is a series which looks at one specific level, character, or idea in gaming and breaks down the central theme to that element to figure out what it's, well, designing for! In this episode, we look back at the original journey to be the very best, and the rival that accosted players every step of the way! What simple actions Pokemon Trainer Blue does to remain an incredibly memorable character, how he reflects the themes of Pokemon, and how he ended up growing past his initial trappings into a character we still cherish today!

    I always thought Blue’s Pidgeot was an interesting choice on his champion team. The other 5 members of his original champion team are among the strongest Pokémon in gen 1, or at least have some of the highest base stats, but Pidgeot really doesn’t fit this. I always took Pidgeot remaining on the team as kind of a hope for Blue, that he would eventually be able to change and view his Pokémon as more than just weapons. Pidgeot getting Return and being his ace in HGSS fulfills this.

    • @AkaiAzul

      It's also his first actual catch. I would know first hand how near impossible it is to get rid of the first Pokemon I threw a ball at. It's that special step that really gets the journey going.

      @@AkaiAzulYeah Blue was here on release but not Red.
      Red got his alt in the game (for the 6 months) way before his normal version, paired with Charizard, and for the 1 year, Blue and Leaf got their alts in with Blastoise and Venusaur, with Red getting his normal version way later with Snorlax Gigamax (and then Pikachu later on for a third version, I think)
      Meaning both normal versions have not their sig (as that would be their strongest mon, for the tournament), but mon they found in their first adventure that more or else left an impression (not sure about Snorlax but you know what I mean)

    I really appreciate that the original games actually treat there being five battles in the Elite 4 as a twist instead of the forgone conclusion it would go on to be in most future games. They build up Lance as the final boss through a long hallways leading to his room, and playing the Gym Leader music during his fight (all the other Elite 4 members use the standard trainer theme). And then when you beat him, he declares that "you're now the Pokemon League champion!
    *...Or, you would have been."*

    • @MicoDossun
      @MicoDossun 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +25

      I love to see someone else say this! For years it’s bothered me that it’s become basically an Elite Five with the fifth battle being a cameo despite still calling it an Elite Four. After hearing about four strong trainers and defeating them all (including Lance wielding the Final Boss Type), Blue as the champion is in the last room not because he sits there waiting for you, he’s there because he’s literally one step ahead of you. It feels like even starting as early as Gen 2 they forgot what that Blue being there meant.

    • @mrsuperheatran2794
      @mrsuperheatran2794 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@MicoDossun I mean, it's not like they could do it again. Hard to pull off the same level of surprise if you have players already expecting it to happen.

    • @MicoDossun
      @MicoDossun 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      @@mrsuperheatran2794 sure, but my point is they could simply have an elite four without a fifth fight. Or they can have five fights but keep looking for unique ways to add a champion fight like let’s say in Gen 2 it was just the elite four and then your “champion fight” is the fight against Red without having a fifth fight within the physical building. You’re right that it’s basically the same as gen 1 but in Black and White they’ve got that surprise N fight but that works because it subverts existing expectation of a champion fight. I just think that Blue is the only truly great champion fight because it’s not written like the strongest fighter in the world is just sitting in a secret fifth room

      It's also noteworthy that Blue's Champion fight doesn't take place in a boss chamber. His room is much smaller than the E4 rooms, which it should have been if Champions were a standard thing back then. It's not a battle chamber at all, it's the Hall of Fame waiting room.

    I started to really appreciate how a good antagonist really brings out the strengths of the protagonist in video games lately, and I feel like Blue does this exceptionally well from a gameplay sense. Blue was so well executed as a rival that every other rival-character in Pokemon is compared directly to him. Everything you need to know about him as a character is summarized in the opening speech: The two of you used to be friends since early childhood, competing for everything which ultimately drove you apart. The fact that he's always one step ahead of you throughout the entire game drives home the fact that the two of you are still competing and makes you want to beat Blue as much as he wants to beat you. While it's a simple concept, none of the other rivals have made me feel like I want to beat them. It's mostly been more like "Come on, get on my level." or "Why am I wasting my time on you?".

  • @sanfransiscon
    @sanfransiscon 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

    Something I find fascinating is the difference between Blue and Gary.
    Blue was certainly competitive and irreverent, but still felt like...a friend? You both grew up competing and getting on each other's nerves, but it's part of your own bond.
    Meanwhile, Gary came across more as the archetype of the popular guy who bullies you. Someone I personally wouldn't want to have anything to do with.
    I think a lot of kids back in the day would see Gary and Blue as the same, which continued with Yellow referencing the show more.
    I almost have to wonder if Trace was an attempt to bring back the pre-Gary Blue, with Blue himself then being the stand-in for Gary?

    • @GatorOne-in7hk
      @GatorOne-in7hk 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      @@Itzmxr No, it's never stated nor implied that he's a bully, and rival doesn't mean what you seem to think it means. It just means that the two are competitive. They're clearly friends. Who else would they be friends with? People just see his antagonistic personality and assume it's mean-spirited, but some friends just like give each other a hard time. Instead of learning that getting stronger isn't just about the fighting itself and you also have to learn about the world around you, he just gets more childish and selfish (not for the lack of reason, given his sister) and that doesn't look like it'll end well in Indigo Disk.

    it's funny that if we considere that Blue in the first game is a more conventional rival, his conterpart in the animated show, Gary, is more like a parody of rival because this guy never confront Ash in Kanto.
    He just rubin in Ash's face how awsome he is every single time we saw him but because we never saw him fight at all in the first season, we don't even know if he's so strong. Because of that and the few time he saw him fighting, we could think that he is not even good at pokemon and that like Ash, his badges was also be given out of pity.

He chooses the advantageous starter vs you, he poses a real challenge and has real growth along you and always stays a step ahead, he's not your buddy he's an arrogant rival always ready to challenge you int he best spots and an actual threat but still always a honorable sport with the same goals as you. After ur 25th anniversary Pokémon video I hope we still get a designing for environmentalism at some point even episodes past Gen one
    every generation has environmentalism its been a core of the franchise since Gen 1
    Pokémon has always been an allegory about the preservation of nature and coexisting with nature
    it’s such a deep and nuanced activist message from someone who cares about the environment teaching the rest of us to do the same
    Gen 8 literally had a message about global warming with galarian corsola
    it’s at the core of the franchise has been since Gen 1 and it’s very real and keeps happening and will always happen so new people will always need that message
    The franchise is based on the creator’s childhood hobby of bug collecting and then losing that hobby due to industrialization
    Such a deep message like that is one of the things that makes pokemon so unique
    And many more examples in every game in each generation
    Environmentalism will always be a part of Pokémon’s heart and soul because of the creator’s passion for nature and that’s not something that should ever be taken for granted by haters it’s a message that everyone needs to learn always that not everyone has learned since nature keeps being abused
    There are a lot of people who got into careers about animals and nature like zoology and marine biology because of Pokémon
    And we need that environmentalism in Pokémon to keep inspiring more people so that nature stops being abused
    Because pokemon has always been about humans coexisting alongside nature
    So again designing for environmentalism will be a fantastic episode
    Sorry to bother u guys hope u see all this

    It's nice to return to ye olde arguments about the quality of Pokemon through its rivals rather than everything else Pokemon did.
    Which... is just great marketing and creating some of the best creature designs in the world, though aside from that Ludomancer has been able to scrutinize the entire franchize under a lens so focused on the main series' weaknesses and failings that it's honestly kind of impressive how Game Freak made it as far as they did. And its most certainly due to no small effort on their part either.
    They definitely made some major blunders, like removing or not implementing promised or necessary features or just nice aesthetics or sometimes devolving their own games' quality, but I like to think that before Pokemon X and Y and after Pokemon Sun and Moon they swung really hard. Even if they didn't get any home runs, they still made a lot of impressively good money making swings.
    I mean, I liked Pokemon X and Y and Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby. I had fun with those games. They weren't what I wanted to play all the time but I didn't necessarily hate them.

    Many people say that the Gen 1 games don't have a deep story. And while the main plot is pretty basic, the environmental story telling is pretty good. There are just so many small details in these games that make the world feel alive.
    There is Prof. Oak's and Agatha's past, the whole Marrowak ghost thing, Mewtwo's story, the game coner being a front setup by team rocket and propably giving out stolen Pokémon as prices, the kanto region just feels alive in a way the other regions don't.

    I think Gary Oak colors peoples perception of Blue in an unfavorable way. Blue may be smarmy and irreverent, but he's not nearly as much of a dick as people make him out to be. He's never discouraging to the player, and many times he's actively ENCOURAGING to him. Read his dialog without Gary Oaks sarcasm voice in your head. You'll be surprised.

    While I'm not one of the people who dislikes all of the rivals we have today, Blue is still at the peak for me. Between his constant presence, constant challenge, being the right amount of snarky to push you instead of annoying you and his growth as a person after he loses while still having that Blue energy. Everything about him is amazing.....just kinda wish he had a regular battle theme. Yes he has an encounter theme and a theme for when he's Champion but it's strange how Blue is the only rival with just a regular battle theme.

    • @BardicLasher
      @BardicLasher 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      He's definitely less interesting as a character, but the point here is that he's the most interesting as a rival. Nobody else ambushes or taunts you the way Blue does with that constant "I'm better at this game than you are." N is probably the best rival as a character, but there just isn't that sense of wanting to wipe the smugness off his face or the real sense that he's growing with you. And Hau and Hop both just always feel one step behind you rather than one step ahead. Meanwhile, you're not even Nemona's rival, you're more her apprentice.

You used a lot of it while talking about other rival characters towards the end and I don't think you need to pull from late game stuff like that to make the same point. Some tags or warnings would go a long way.

    I am currently crying so hard right now. This is seriously the most beautiful, well put together story ever. I can’t believe how magical it was 1:12. That part truly made me shed a tear. And especially at 6:34 that part was just so truly heart touching words can not describe the series of emotions I felt. I absolutely loved the climax it had insanely excellent detail. Oh and we can’t forget the conclusion. The conclusion was the greatest and saddest conclusion I have ever seen better than any of the books I have read. Thank you so much for creating this absolute masterpiece. This is essentially the most important masterpiece of film history. It is a tragedy that this, it can’t be called a film, but a transcendent emotional experience, will be inaccessible for most. It beautifully encapsulates the human struggle to its basics; suffering, pleasure, faith, despair. It connects with the characters within the viewers, individuals suppressed within our own subconscious. It stays vibrant, fresh, and revolutionizes the art of storytelling and filmmaking while making a damn of statement on what it means to be human. Entertaining, gripping, and simply exhilarating. This might be the most impactful piece of art I’ve come across in my life, and I’m definitely coming back to it in the near future to study it more deeply. this is an absolute masterpiece , I was brought to tears listening to this and seeing the bacon go whirly swirly in a circle countless times. it absolutely moved my soul , and I don't think I can ever be the same. this bacon has changed my entire mental state , I am now at peace with who I am and what I will be doing later in my life. i have forgiven all my enemies and now I am a man of a pacifist life. I will move on , gotta move on , as the song says. the bacon is so inspirational , it shares it vast wisdom with all of us , and we are all so lucky that it would bestow it's great words with us. we are all children on bacon. hail bacon. hail bacon. The spinning bacon, rotating in one direction with this music... This made me tear up. How could such a bacon do such a thing? I'm struck by awe by this masterpiece. Especially when the bacon spins, showing its lightly salt covered tan skin. I can hear the crunch just from here, and so as the beautiful sound of the bacon scraping the dark, smooth velvet floor. The flavor, music and everything can be heard, tasted, seen and felt from a screen. You can really hear the breaths between the music artist, empathizing her love for this rotating bacon. Truly what I call modern art. This was the most legendary performance by any piece of bacon I have ever watched. The acting was top tier and very life changing.
