- It's time for another Character Study! This time, I thought I'd cover another Rival, and Gen 3's Wally seemed like the perfect person to go over! He might seem like just a kid with a ralts, but he's much more than that (He's a badass kid with a ralts!).

I just like when people are confident, and then how their face change after I beat them.
Even though Wally has poor health but for a shy and timid Wally to risk his own life to pursue his dreams is sad but Wally and even though nobody believed in him and with no help he succeeds. The first version of him running away from his home and family then meeting him again at victory road sums up the best of Wally.

I really have a lot of respect for Wally because of his amazing character development. He overcame an illness to fulfill his dream of becoming a strong Pokemon trainer. He is a grade A example of showing that you can succeed with anything as long as you put your heart into it.
He's Message in the Game that you really didn't know inside him: "Don't let Fear get in your way, as long as you have Determination, Belief & Confidence, you can succeed your dreams & goals in life, no matter what gets in your way!"

Wally is a smol cinnamon roll. So good, so pure. He's like the little brother friend that is fun to mess with and must be protected at all costs. The fact that he was made to have an illness, contrary to popular belief, builds on his character not to make him weak but rather stronger and emphasize the fact that he has to face that struggle while on his journey (makes him more respectable). He's such a cutie; battling him in Victory Road was a huge achievement for him and character development. I was not only surprised in his newfound confidence but also how much he had grown. It was refreshing to see :) His theme music for the battle was so different (nice) as well; I was so proud. The background for the battle was also a good match; having flowers there was almost symbolic to his growth. He's the type of character that makes me cheer for him to get better. I honestly would be more happy for him than upset if he beat me in a battle one day haha.
As for the manga, I haven't read the ones he appears in but it seems like his character is much more developed, as expected, and rather than having a less capable feeling, Wally proves himself resistant and determined much like his game counterpart but at a different level. The fact that he is the one to awaken Rayquaza is extremely respectable and it makes me proud of him for all that he's accomplished.
Overall, I hope we get to see him again and that he makes an appearance in the anime. Maybe Generations?? Hope & Pray.
Ok so storytime.
I was at the Battle Resort, and I talked to a parasol lady near-ish the daycare and such. Turns out she changes to music to a few random different tracks for the resort. So she changes it to Wally’s theme, and I literally almost cried. It brought back so many feels.
10/10 would recommend.

I absolutely love Wally, especially the manga version! Though it was a right kick in the gut when he wasnt made the Emerald character, something which pissed me off indefinitely... Seriously, the fact we had a fully developed rival with an original story, personality, a starter pokemon he fully evolved, pokedex, and a relevant team to gen 3, only to get replaced by some kid from Johto who stole his starter, had unoriginal development and a team that consisted of 2 gen 3 pokemon completely baffles me... Heck, even the colour schemes dont match! Wally is green like an emerald, while Emerald is mostly yellow and brown... WTH!!?
I really hope they do something more with Wally to make him a pokedex holder, cause as it stands right now two hoenn pokedex holders are from the Johto region or have strong connections with it... That number should be zero ffs...
I felt the same. Yellow got her own Pokedex even when Oak didn't plan to give her one, but why not Wally? Was it because he wasn't named Emerald?

I can understand it's really understandable and I felt the same until the end of the emerald chapter I really liked his development and his character and the ending
I've always respected Wally. He started off as an underdog and trained hard to have the skill and determination of a champ. His Respirator Suit from the manga looks cool! And though the male and female MC's of RSE have already been decided for years now, I have always felt that Wally could be the MC of Emerald (because of his green hair plus him deserving it).
Wally is my favorite rival. I know the Genwunners are gonna crucify me, and the "SILVER IS THE BEST RIVAL" guys are going to start a small militia, but I just LOVE Wally! And his theme... His theme is just amazing. (ORAS Theme)

David Halabi Yeah IF it is, though I'm thinking if it follows the trend then the DP remakes will be on the next major handheld release, I mean look at all the other remakes, FRLG came out on the GBA, which was a major step up from the GB and GBC , HGSS came out for the DS which as a huge step up from the GBA and GBA SP, and ORAS came out on the 3DS which was a step up from the the DS, DS lite, and DSI.

I loved Wally in ORAS. Even though I was around, I never owned any of the original gen three games. But it's nice to see that they poured in the extra work the second time around.

Those are just the overworld models, if you go into your trainer passport you'll see your character model looks normal in his/her picture

He's an okay character, definitely better in ORAS. :)
Maybe it would've been better if they fused the two. Wally runs away with some people not believing or even knowing what he's actually doing, but over time as he goes farther and gets stronger, his family and friends find out and start believing in him. Perhaps his dad finally comes to terms that his frail little boy is a whole lot stronger than he ever thought he could be.
for some reason I could always catch ralts when feeling sad, so I'd make myself sad just to catch one, for some reason it always worked for me. even though there's no way it could really effect things

I'd totally be all for this. Gladion and Lillie have the kind of duology between them but don't quite function in the way it'd work best.
I think what they're going for is the kind of relationship where a character is against you the whole way, but the other one is friendly AND able to explain why the other is the way the are, which should be done over the course of the story, which is kind of done with the Lillie/Gladion dynamic, but nowhere near good enough.

You'll have to forgive my Voice/speaking in this one. I was sick and had a mouth infection when recording the dialogue, so at times there's some weird pauses and it also becomes a garbled mess at other times. Also, I might re-upload this video later on to fix some audio issues, but we'll see how it goes. Other than that, sorry I've been gone for a month! It's been a pretty crazy month, and I was just barely able to make this video and upload it, so you'll have to forgive me ;_; Big changes are coming to the channel in the coming months, and while I can't announce anything definitively yet, I might be taking a break indefinitely soon. But as for right now, I'm going to try and get back to a weekly (or even more frequent) upload schedule!

+Mr Buddy Wally is by far my favourite Rival of any Generation, personally. Overall, I don't really tend to see much of a difference between Wally in RSE or ORAS - though, I agree that the remakes having him develop with the full support of all his family, is preferable to him feeling the need to run away to train if he felt that they'd oppose this. For the anime, it's too late to put him in now. I personally don't read the 'Pokémon Adventures' manga - partly due to not finding anyone outside of the Sinnoh characters that interesting. But mainly, I hate the manga character of "Emerald" with a burning passion; he replaced Wally being a central Dex Holder, and having a key role in the story. ("Emerald" is obnoxious, has barely any personality, interesting relationships, or character development; he could be taken out of the 'Pokemon Adventures' manga, and yet nothing would change, for the worse). ... That aside, thanks very much for doing such a thorough character analysis of Wally! These are always great :)

Wally is the kind of rival I like best. Someone who's weak that then becomes a whole lot stronger, not out of ego but out of confidence building.
Wally is the cutest rival. Idk the fact that he’s nice to the player helps too. The other nice rivals feel like comic relief or like the brenden/May rival who are there like “Okee let’s check up on your Pokémon and how strong they are”
I personally wouldn't count Barry as a "nice" rival. Sure, he's the player's best friend but he's certainly not the kindest person or the most graceful loser. But I'll let you tackle that when you do an eventual video on him.

i like wally, when he battled me at victory road. i surprised that tiny ralts become a strong gardevoir and that battle was challenging to me..
I feel that out of all the rivals, Wally is one of the Pokemon rivals that has the best character development. He starts out as a boy who’s insecure about himself but with each battle, he finds his stride and builds up confidence. He’s not meant to be cocky, aloof, or outright annoying af like other rivals but he’s got his own sort of strength that made me resonate with the character a lot when I played Sapphire (aka my first Pokémon title). That’s one of the reasons why I loved playing Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald and found something more in this underrated generation.

eevee is considered a starter pokemon, along with pikachu since they were starters in that game.

Being a newer fan-heart gold and soul silver being the first games i played- I never remembered the rivals that well, how remembered them was silver being mean or Bianca being funny, but was about it, but I could remember wall better than I could remember the other rivals, he had a more clear personality to me so I cared more for him.
Little lucky cat It's true. He's easily the best rival (Unless N counts as a rival, but I don't consider him one as he's more of a team leader than a rival for me.)

Seeing him in Sun Moon makes me so happy because he’s so tough to fight.
Wally holds a really special place in my heart as does the Ruby and Sapphire games. For one, those games were the first pokemon games I owned, the others either belonging to my sisters or my parents while I watched over their shoulder.
I remember what I first thought when I saw Wally, for one his actions and way of speaking always reminded me of myself as I could never build up confidence in anything. It helped that I had caught a ralts for my team before I met him on the previous route. His journey gave me happiness, I always worried about him whenever traveling. I didn't consider him my rival, that was saved for May, but I considered him a friend from the few interactions I had with him. I felt really bad when I beat him in front of the gym, though was happy to find out that he was out there training to get stronger.
I never saw the end to his journey in ruby and sapphire, I actually didn't even go to victory road. After beating the eighth gym, I went back to do whatever I felt like. I was terrified of the elite four when I was younger.
I never knew what came of Wally, I thought he did what I couldn't and defeated the elite four.
I grew up, I became less like Wally and more confident in myself. I really was happy with my growth, but a bit sad now that I couldn't consider myself and Wally similar.
When I did get Alpha Sapphire, I actually beat the game to victory road. It made me really happy to see Wally again, I had the same team I did when I first went through the game. It was a great battle, I really enjoyed seeing how strong he got, as it cemented the thought that both him and myself are very similar. Even though his journey was shorter then my own, it was the same. I felt pride that he had gotten so much stronger, and my dream that he defeated the elite four back in the originals where I couldn't wouldn't be to far out of reach from him.
He may be the friendly rival that people have grown to dislike(or hate), but to me, he will always be more then that. He will always be my most dear friend and the only character I have ever related to on that level.

Also Wally is an inspiration to me! When i played ORAS I really enjoyed his character and kind-of taught me that I could practically do anything even with my asthma condition! I started believing more in myself of doing sports that involve a lot of aerobic activity.

Yeah, the difference is pretty slight, but its the necklace + opened jacket + the more serious/confident expression.

As my first basic experience with Gen 3 was Omega Ruby, I found Wally an nexpected surprise and he quickly became one of my favorite characters in all of Pokemon. There's just something about his development in ORAS that struck me as amazing and was much different than what I experienced in Diamond, White, and Y (The games I played before ORAS)

Ruby and Sapphire Wally was brave and had a lot of courage to take on a journey all on his own without much help. Omega Sapphire and Ruby Wally was also brave, and with the support of his family and friends, he made his journey. Manga Wally found many ways to concur his sickness and became a hero. These are all really awesome Wallys. I can't exactly pick my favorite.
Wally is so shy and timid he deserves to experience the worst to become a monster like mewtwo. The Wally we all know and love will be so cool!

Plague Divine Well, i'm writing a fanfic where Wally becomes the Guardian of Yveltal to protect the ones he loves, at the cost of being possessed by an Alter Ego. In the end, when his Alter tries turning him into an evil person, Wally and Alter Wally (who's gonna separate from him) will fight to the death.
I do not know if you take suggestions, but I would love to see a character study on Pearl/Barry/Jun/etc.! :)

Wally was a really cool rival to have as a kid struggling with asthma myself. We're both determined and don't get knocked back by challenges so easily :)
I love wally, he's my favorite character. Both versions probably swaying more towards the old one.

In all honestly, I thought Wally was bland in Gen 3, but Gen 6 made me love him so much. Coming from someone who grew up with asthma, I can easily fit in this kids shoes. I am so alot like wally in many ways, I was shy and timid young in life, but after enduring obstacles on my long and perilous journey into High School, I've become so much more outgoing and upbeat with many people, even strangers, similar to his character development in generation 6. I love this character because I am a walking real life version of him essentially.

Guys, I'm so sorry to say this but, Wally is dead. In our last battle I used the following Pokemon.
Torcoal, wheezing, jumpluff, cotteny, mega gengat, and gyaridos.
This was 8 months ago. I buried him in hoenn's victory road after torcoal used smokescreen! I just couldn't take it anymore so I'm saying it now. Sorry

I kind of hated how he changed because he went from cute and timid to cool and strong and like, I don’t think cool and strong fits him very well. I loved seeing his little blushing face at the start of the game, and then he went off and never acted nervous again. What the heck, Wally
