  • The 2024 Dodge Charger Daytona and 2024 Dodge Daytona Sixpack have been officially unveiled. One is a powerful 670HP electric "muscle car" with all wheel drive, and the other with the Hurricane turbocharged inline 6 cylinder. Under a lot of pressure Dodge claims that they were no longer able to make V8 Dodge Challengers or Chargers anymore - so they had to come up with a different solution. With the Hellcat engine now officially gone and off the market for good, how will this effect the muscle car market? Let's talk about it.

They fucked their brand way back in the 90s. Yes, Dodge Challengers and Chargers are gorgeous but they borrow the Mercedes frame and engine design. Yes, nothing on the new Dodges are Mercedes but Mercedes made the first Hellcat in one of their cars(Before Dodge did it) and Dodge took the blueprint from Mercedes. I think the worst move Dodge/Chrysler could've made was going with Fiat.

@danielmorris-ruckett913 Do you not read? First of all, Mercedes used to own Dodge. 2nd, back in the first 2010s, the Dodge charger was built with Mercedes chassis, transmission etc. Only thing Dodge put on them were the engines and the panels, thats literally it. Now, my point of what I was saying about the Hellcat Engine is, Mercedes had their own engine that they made that resembled what was like a Hellcat Engine before the actual Hellcat Engine came in. Mercedes was doing it before Dodge. I never said anything about Mercedes making the Hellcat. I said, the whole car was Mercedes but the panels and engine, on the 2010s and up before Mercedes did away with Dodge.

A single Model X's battery contains enough lithium to produce 6818.18 (repeating of course) iPhone batteries. (Assuming 90kWh P90D Model X vs an iPhone battery with 13.2Wh of battery.) Phone vs EV battery is not even an argument.
The real issue is the government enforced tax that penalizes every non EV/Hybrid vehicle an OEM sells, look up ZEV (Zero Emission Vehicles) mandate, it basically kills the incentive for manufacturers to build ICE cars. Don't blame the OEMs for making these decisions, it comes from politicians and their benefactors.

When I used to be a lot attendant in a Dodge service center it was horrifying to see the quality get smashed over a decade. The older 300s hold up way better than the newer ones with electrical gremlins (not saying that the old ones are that good to begin with), a wagoner with less than 1000 miles having an issue with the rear door, a 60,000 mile ish front wheel drive cherokee with the tranny slipping really bad, and my personal favorite: an 8 mile eco-diesel ram with a check engine light already on.
And don't get me started with those garbage pacifica minivans, especially the hybrid ones. I have seen several with very low miles come in with a hybrid system failure or the stop start technology which is bad to begin with not doing it's job or stalling in an intersection.

If I was in the position of running Dodge, here’s what I would do:
One of the big problems with electric vehicles is that they’re pretty much being positioned like a smart phone. It is very difficult or impossible to repair it yourself, and if there are any problems, It’s fairly likely that you will have to pay as much as the entire car. Don’t understand, I’m an EV fan, I drive a small EV, and an electric vehicle can be significantly more reliable than a gas or diesel engine. Not only that, but a lot of modern gasoline cars are extremely expensive to repair as well. These aren’t the vehicles that were built in the 70s that you could just fix or change your suspension or would have you in your garage. current gas cars are significantly more complicated than they used to be.
    That said…
I think there is an opening for an OEM to create an electric vehicle platform specifically designed to be modified and upgraded. Now most EVs have essentially the same kind of suspension and tires as any other car. But what if you designed an electric vehicle that specifically was positioned for the owner to make different kinds of performance choices. For example, as I mentioned in another comment, there are all sorts of battery chemistries that are being developed. what if there was a muscle car that was designed to let you swap out the batteries, not in a quick automated way like some of the Chinese cars are doing, but something that you would do if you have a lift, or maybe if you can put your car up on risers, which would allow third parties to provide an alternative power source. And what if you could do the same thing with the electric motors? Not that, but if you could tune the performance curve in the battery system, there’s all sorts of possibilities. For instance, some manufactures are experimenting with having two different kinds of battery chemistry, one design for high output for performance, and the other part designed for longer range. changing the balance between those two things is probably one of the places where a tuner could change an electric vehicle.
I’m also not convinced that we’ve seen the end of the manual transmission. Well electric vehicles don’t need a manual transmission, or most cases of transmission of any kind, at the same time, I still believe that there is potential efficiency to be gained from adding a manual to an electric electric drive train. i’m not sure as you’re revving the electric motor whether it’s efficient the same way across the entire power band or not. Perhaps somebody’s done the experiment on this, but if you were designing for instance a race car, and you had to eat out that last drop of electric range so that you wouldn’t have to recharge or switch vehicles or drop the battery or have you, maybe there’s a place for a manual transmission there.
Finally, with regards to the motor sound, I’m an electric vehicle fan, but I’m not a fan of that. One of the big benefits of electric motor is that it’s generally quiet. The idea that you would add gasoline engine noise to that is just silly. Let the vehicle make it noise. The only thing I might say, and then I might do if I were the head of Dodge right now, is find out whether or not there is a way to mechanically amplify the natural noise of the electric motor.
Japanese and Italian manufactures are especially good at tuning their noise using sound experts to get just exactly what they want out of their exhaust manifolds etc. I see no reason why this kind of attitude couldn’t also be used in an electric car. For instance, changing the proportions of electric motor would almost certainly change the electric wine that comes out of it. most electric vehicles are trying to be a silent as possible. But that’s not a requirement. Now granted, sound usually means in efficiency. But having a little bit of sound come out of your electric motor could generate some excitement and also give the driver some feedback. If that sound isn’t audible enough though, there’s no reason why you couldn’t figure out a way to create a sound Pike from the engine either into the cabin, out to the exterior, or both. And if that sound pipe was shaped properly, you would be getting actual electric motor sounds, but tune in away that would not artificially change them, but instead emphasize them and give you an more exciting experience. It’s kind of what I thought Dodgers gonna do, but now it seems like they may be using artificial digitally generated audio. That’s a real bummer, and I’d rather just didn’t do that and had the most powerful electric vehicle on the planet. It’s a hard thing to do, because the Tesla model plaid I’m pretty Suredestroys any Dodge that’s out there today. But if that’s wrong, it’s certainly is in the mix. Why shouldn’t Dodge make it electric vehicle the absolute fastest production car outside of a Bugatti?

I think we’re gonna have to get passed this mentality. With emissions and climate change we’re gonna need to shift to fuel efficient engines, and a turbo inline 6 is wayyy more than enough and we’ve known this since the 2JZ. Hell im surprised the new mustang GT doesnt have an ecoboost V6 like the Raptor and keep the V8 to a GT500/Cobra trim. At this point we’re arguing over sound preference, a twin turbo V6 would develope power easier than a NA V8 would just do to the fact that the engine would already be built for boost and have easy and cheaper access to more boost and respond better to different upgrades. Whats the issue? What even is a muscle car, is it just a V8 is there anybody that really thinks a mid engine vette is anything short of a supercar? Is a 458 with a ferrari V8 a muscle car? Is a GNX not a muscle car cause it was a sixer? Is a musclle cause just a boat sized car with a big ass engine that makes a lot of boost? Cause imo the mustang hasnt been a muscle car in a long ass time and the only real muscle car was the challenger. Muscle cars have been dead a long time, V8’s will eventually be dead also and while it sucks thats life, its not supposed to stay static and things have to change and for actual reasons even if we wanna cover are eyes and ears about how man made climate change isnt real. Japan and Europe showed 6 cylinders is more than good enough, idk why its such an issue for americans

That disparity likely stems from their financial services, marine, housing, agraculture & medical business units being strong there. The US too has very limited electric in most of the country but it's not too bad in former industrial areas. That has a lot to do with infrastructure planning expecting a fall in electric usage over time, rather than the massive, rapid increase. Overall JP is at 7.4 MWh/capita and the US at only 4.5 so, at the moment Japan uses about 60% more per person already. I suspect that both infrastructures will need a massive refit.
