  • The Open Source Scan Converter allows you to plug your retro consoles, like a Sega Genesis or a Super Nintendo, into modern TVs and increase the picture quality SIGNIFICANTLY from that measly little 240p image to glorious high definition. Your pixels never looked better.

    In response to 5"15 about the CRT, there are certain games that did take advantage of the blurry image of RF/Composite and the scan lines of a CRT and combined them to make a more detailed image, and it can't be replicated with scan converters like the OSSC. Also if you look into it you can get your scart cables hooked up to a CRT, or use the HD retrovision on a component capable CRT and it will look nice and sharp without the need for the OSSC.

    Love your videos man. Just wanted to offer this thought; originally I like you wanted no scanlines, just totally bright clean pixels. Then it occured to me when the games designers made the games there was no choice but to have scan lines. How the games look was designed around the scanlines. To remove them, is to take away from how the games were made to be seen. To trying to change how you play, but when I realised that, I change and never went back. I found that they actually made the games look better not worse. As counterintuitive as that sounds. Anyway, just a thought. You do you, and keep enjoying the games!

    Really enjoyed this vid. I came here looking to answer which cable SCART or Component would be better to use with OSSC. I take from your vid that essentially there is no difference in quality but SCART seems to be cheaper over RetroVision cables. For someone that is looking to change over different retro consoles it seems SCART would be better (since AV is cabled over one plug/cable VS 3 RCA + 3.5mm.)
    SCART seems like a no brainer for cost and convenience over component. But have I missed anything?

      The Framemeister (xrgb mini) is indeed expensive, but I love mine and I'm so glad I have it in my set-up. My goal was/is to have all of my retro systems connected and ready to play without any plugging/unplugging. To do this I have rgb scart cables for every system plugged into a scart switch, then into the framemeister and finally to the hdmi input of my flat screen. I get it that this is overkill for a lot of people just wanting to play old games, but it was something I wanted to do and is possible. The picture I get out of the framemeister is great too.

  • @logicalfundy

    One thing I would really like from a device like this (especially since it's aimed directly at games) is some of the filters that you find in emulators, such as SAI, Eagle, and AdvMAME. Since it's an open source project, I imagine somebody could do it and they might come eventually. Nearest neighbor stuff isn't terribly exciting to me, though.

Only Plasma Displays look almost "on par" with the clarity and resolution in motion that only CRT TVs can .

      As much as I like CRTs (I use a Sony 20" PVM), most CRTs ARE a blurry mess when using composite. Only reason the PVM looks so good is because I'm using RGB out of my retro consoles.

    • @Red05x
      @Red05x 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@scorpian007 Well, that's the Composite Cable, no the CRT. BUT even Composite looks better on a CRT than RGB OSSC on a LCD or OLED. I'm not talking about still pictures but video content.
      EDIT: Also, PlayStation 3 looks AMAZING on a CRT TV, even with Composite Cable (some games I'm pretty sure were made with CRT TV in mind, some weren't). Have you seen resident evil 4 PS3 version on a CRT TV? Every time I put the System and game, I'm amazed HOW GOOD and better looks on the CRT TV than on my OLED. Yes, even 480i with Composite Cable (CRT TV) vs HDMI 720p (OLED).

    Hey, one of the crazy ones that still uses a crt. I like my scanlines and the contrast is unparalleled. Yes, you get sharp pixels but grey blacks(ewww) unless you have an OLED.
    But in the eventual death of crts, the ossc and the retrotink are interesting options. I'm not on the fpga train yet, but that may change.
    Finally the genesis also has several revisions. E.g. the genesis 3 will output rgb but no stereo sound!.
    Keep being awesome!

    Gamming graphics are so personal to each different way a person subconscious sees it that theres no one shoe fits all.With rite tv and software filters external scanline generator with pixel sizing and blending into the scanline beautifully to get the smooth depth pixels and blend the the brightness into the scanline and games picture to hide some scanline so you barely see them and beautiful picture with rendering blending to.

    I have both, and prefer for the most part the OSSC over the FMeister... It is sharper than the FM when your television is compatible with it. The FM wins only when you need say composite input, you need TV compatibility, because it works with just about any TV or if you are doing any game capture. My primary reason for liking the OSSC over the FMeister is the 1-2 frames of lag added by the up-scaling method of the FMeister, that the OSSC does not add with it's line multiplying method.

    OSSC is the best solution for retrogames, but it is difficult to set because in each site it is different and it says that its is better, sometimes I have tried N64 mod rgb but after setting it I get "signal not compatible" in other settings they go well, what settings do you use for the old consoles?

    Last I checked, they haven't dropped composite from TVS. You won't find it on the front anyone, and they're merging the green from component with the yellow from composite so they can save a tiny bit of space and cost, but my recently bought TV still has it.

    can someone help? some of my consoles already have hdmi converted. the best way to upscale is use the HD video converter box and the mclassic to boost that from 240 to 1820 then up by 2x at the end. what i am wondering is can the HD converter box upscale amazon box, bluray and other hdmi devices? is the the best way to go? since most of my console have hdmi out put and since ossc ,ect do not have a hdmi input?
    I can just input HDMI to HDMI out with the HD converter box & it upscales it to the 1820?

    I know this is about original hardware, but I have to highly recommend the Super NT and Mega SG consoles. No mods necessary and both the image and audio is fantastic, not to mention no input lag.

    You can connect composite by putting the yellow cable on green port

      Your HDTV should allow you to stretch the image the fullscreen if thats your preference. It being 4:3 by default should be the standard.

    Got my retro systems hooked up to a Sony BVM 20E1E here via RGB scart and it can assure you it isnt a blurry mess. I also use 1084s crt monitors and i love the way they look. Beautifully clean. If running a retro machine through composite or god forbid RF to a standard CRT tv im not surprised its a blurry mess. As for lcd. I hate the way it looks. Far too sharp for my taste.

    Framemeister also adds lag compared to the OSSC. Not that I can notice.

      Unfortunately no. You could get a system modded to have component output but that's at least the same price or more as a good SCART cable.

    Can you do a video on the retrotink and compare them. Been thinking about retrotink, if anyone has one what's your experience with it.

    • @MistahDale
      @MistahDale 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's plug and play and compatible with a lot more displays than OSSC, of course keep your expectations in check, it only doubles 240p to 480p, but for ease of use and reliability I give it a solid 8/10

  • @MistahDale
    @MistahDale 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Don't forget the RetroTink2x! It linedoubles 240p to 480p, and accepts 480i input, it's a great option for people who just want to use Composite, S-Video, or Component, without the need for RGB Scart cables. It also has FAR less display compatibility issues than the OSSC. That being said I own both and love them equally for what they are :>

    Hey guys, I’ve purchased some of the Pound Technology HDMI cables. They aren’t perfect, but for $30 I think they are great. When I think I played these games originally through coaxial cable, the slight discoloration that sometimes shows up with the Pound isn’t too bad.

      I have a PVM and even with crisp component, there's still an inherent blurring going due to it being a CRT. I don't mind it because I like that look.
