Man, I wanted Nights so bad when I was a kid but couldn't afford it. Then one day about 15 years ago I found a Saturn with Nights at a yard sale for $20. Best deal ever.
wow. score
Darn good find. Closest I get is talking about the time when I was 15 in 2005, and I got Sonic Jam for $16 from ebay.
Nice!
Good deal! I got my model 2 in a used game store for like 200 bucks, yeah they ripped me off but whatever
Dream come true just like the game promises 😂😂
This dude makes me happy I love listening to him talking about older games
It's true!
Sega Saturn is the last great 2D system and the 2D fighters and 2D shmups are OUTSTANDING! Dreamcast included some as well, but having died an early death, the Dreamcast's library isn't as extensive as the Saturn. Especially if you take the Japanese titles into account. Truly a wonderful system.
The last bit had me crying. 😁🤣
Man do I love this channel: light-hearted, comedic, and straight to the point.
Luckily on ebay: I recently bought Zwei for $40 because the seller needed money. :)
I just can't help it...I love Sonic 3D Blast on the Saturn so much. One note of that absolutely divine soundtrack and I go all misty 🥹
I know I'm bias because 3D Blast was my first sonic game, but it's my favorite.
Bought a Saturn just to play Shinobi Legions and Super Tempo. No regrets. Both great.
My man always making my friday night's happy.
Fr
Love the Saturn. It's such a unique system and if you're a fighting game fan it's for sure going to be up your alley.
Also you have quickly become one of my favorite channels. You're hilarious XD
Glad you're liking the channel!
I love your sense of humor
I’d kill to be able to go back to this generation once again. All three platform holders were pulling their weight and cranking out high quality games left and right.
Not like today where one cranks out high quality games on anemic hardware, the next cranks out high quality games to divert your attention from extortion and highway robbery, while the last does nothing and pretends it’s made a contribution.
Third party games are great these days (as was the case back in our favorite 5th gen). I’d love to go back too tho… game scene was so much fun in late 90s…
Get on my lawn, I like the list so much, plus I never miss a video from this channel, it’s my happy place.
Thanks for that gag at the end!
Saturn graphics look pretty neat still.
Man I can't believe Treasure made Guardian Heroes... gotta be the first Saturn game in anyone's collection!
Where’s the Retro Bird merch section so I can get me a “Get On My Lawn” cap???
Was thinking this as well
I've considered doing this at some point. Perhaps once I hit a certain subscriber count.
Fantastic video. Definitely going to look into the shooter that you recommended
“The price of the US copy sucks now”. Dry delivery and friggin hilarious.
Only the R. Bird could make a plunger seem so darn happy :)
Sega Saturn is my favorite system of all time! Great list. I would just add NiGHTS and Die Hard Arcade!
Panzer Dragoon Saga is absolute gold. I don't care how expensive it is, it is an excellent if not perfect title.
Daytona, Scud, and Fighting Vipers are my 3 favorite games probably. I recommend Scud if you want some run and gun action.
Scud is especially awesome if you plug a light gun into slot 2 and choose the 2 player, one controller, one gun option. Player one controls Scud in the run and gun stages while player 2 lays down cover fire with the light gun as Drywall. There are even 2 settings- one where the light gun shots kill bad guys and one where the freeze them.
One player two guns light gun mode is a frantic blast as well!
@@bananonymouslastname5693 I'll definitely try it at some point.
@@Mr1Broke1Acid I hope you enjoy it! It seems like most folks don't know about that mode. Scud has so many ways to play that it's almost silly.
@@bananonymouslastname5693 I'm sure I was going to try it out and forgot over time. I don't get many opportunities to turn on the Saturn. I have the Predator gun for Saturn but no other games for it. Hard to justify breaking all of that out for one game.
In this crazy world that just loves to throw things at you left and right; I can always count on your videos to cheer me up.
Glad to hear it. Life can be rough sometimes.
@@RetroBirdGaming Thanks again for doing what you do; and I always appreciate our back and forth diolug.
@@RetroBirdGaming Definitely spelled that wrong I believe. Lol
@@RetroBirdGaming Yeah, indeed I did. As Popeye always said: "I yam what I yam."
The Saturn still holds up today!!
Nice tribute to Classic Game Room at the end!
That ending skit lol
I can’t recommend a terraonion MODE enough. Beyond the prices, some amazing Saturn games you really can’t find anymore, regardless of price (some of the Working Designs games come to mind). Of course I’d always prefer the actual copy of the game but that’s not always an option so a MODE goes a long way, and still lets you play on original hardware
Yeah, that's a really great option.
I have the Satiator, which is nice, because you can still play your original disks too.
I love these videos, and even the endings are super funny.
I remember geting mine, it came with three titles, VF2, Virtua Cop 2 and Sega Rally. It was approximately £250, back in 96 I believe. Still to this day it looks beautiful, the pads still feel lovely, and certain games have a classic atmosphere.
I love u bird!
Thank u for the entertaining videos!
Thanks for the entertainment, you're my kind of bird.
Very nice list! I had never heard of that one "Souky", but I am huge shmup fan. I need to check it out! It looks fantastic! When I used to collect Saturn games like a decade or so ago, I picked up Donpachi, Dodonpachi and the Parodius games through an import game store. Those are some fantastic shmups as well and I can easily recommend to any shmup fans!
I used to own about a dozen games on Saturn and, oddly enough, one of my absolute favorites was the Saturn-exclusive _Digital Pinball: Last Gladiators_ . Yes, it is a pinball game, but it is surprisingly addictive to get that high score! It actually has a pretty authentic look and feel for a virtual pinball game. The ball physics feel perfect and there are four unique tables to pick from. If you're a pinball fan in the slightest, I can't recommend this game enough! It actually came with my Saturn console free, so I probably would have overlooked it otherwise.
Sega Rally Championship forever! Great video on one of gaming's most misunderstood consoles. I love the Saturn regardless of its shortcomings. Thanks Retrobird!
The book probably has “Timmy” written in it somewhere.
Been watching this channel for a while now and i absolutely love it, the guy is just so naturally talented at what he does, this channel is going to blow up big time! Much love from England ❤
Really appreciate you saying that!
@@RetroBirdGaming GET ON MY LAWN!! 🤣 honestly I thank you so much for giving us such enjoyable content and also for recommending games that I didn't even know about that I have now played and enjoyed because of you, cheers buddy let's have a banana to celebrate your awesomeness 😄👍
@@RetroBirdGamingalso I'd just like to say thank you for replying, as a huge fan there's nothing better than to hear from your idol ❤
Oh my..... I miss my Saturn so much. the king of 2D.
Seen a couple others mention it, so here's my two cents: If your goal is to experience the games on original hardware and not just own/collect physical copies I would argue that the Saturn is the system that benefits most from an ODE. The Satiator allows you to keep the disc drive functional; the Fenrir Duo replaces the disc drive and keeps the expansion card slot on the back open. I've got both in separate consoles and they're both great - I flip between them at random and really can't notice any difference in terms of gameplay.
The bit at the end killed me! 😂
Maaan, what are the odds of you making a video about Saturn games the same week I take a big dive into this console's library?!
Here are some good'uns I found: Sega Rally Championship, Astal, Burning Rangers, Mass Destruction, Mr. Bones, and Scorcher.
Really hope someone like Analogue makes an FPGA Saturn clone one of these days. It's one of the big systems I missed out on.
That would be super amazing. Very happy with my super NT 😁
Loved the ending...may I suggest getting READY PLAYER ONE on DVD & then you can play it on the PS2. Loved the plunger reference! Fun stuff!!!
As a sports / horse racing fan I liked Saturn because it was the only console that had "Winning Post" in English!
Not an exciting game from a gameplay standpoint but, if you enjoy the thrill of owning and breeding horses, you can play for years!
Best outro yet by far! 😂
Never had a Saturn unfortunately. Looks great
I enjoyed my Saturn back in the mid-'90s, but the PS was the real workhorse in my home back then. PS1 is still my fave retro system today, but the Saturn is the comfort food on most days when i need to put on something special or really good.
Great video as always...
Definatley recommend The Crow: City of Angels, it's a staple of the Saturn experience at my buddy's cabin. First time anyone goes up they've gotta play it, in all its so bad it's awful but so awful it goes great with friends.
I liked all your games there. A game I would recommend is Earth Worm Jim 2 for the Sega Saturn. I played this game for the Sega Genesis & it was really good. I couldn't believe how much better it was on the Sega Saturn though. The Graphics & sound I noticed were that much better on the Saturn.
Never got to experience the Saturn, but seeing this video makes me really hope Sega puts out a Saturn mini, so I can experience the games in an affordable way. Thank you for all the effort you put into this channel!
Virtua Cop 2, Fighter’s Mega Mix, and Virtual On! Great Stuff, as always!
Fantastic video!!! The Saturn is my favorite console and had it since launch. Those were all great picks, I would add Virtua Fighter 2 or Fighters Mega mix as Japanese versions are still cheap. The same can be said for Sega Rally an amazing arcade racer!!😄👍
Hold on, lemme make some popcorn
Zwei with a mission stick is the crown jewel of my collection. I can only imagine having it back in 96.
Your handrawn rendition of Panzer Dragoon artwork made me drop my chicken wing.
That ending 😂
Looks like you took a cue from Classic Game Room with the book .😂👍
Retro Bird Fridays!
It's a crime Dark Savior is Perpetually stuck to the Saturn. Game was way ahead of its time and dealt with a lot of heavy themes
I Like that Scruff McGruff reference….I always knew you were around my age haha
I was finally able to obtain a working Sega Saturn just yesterday, I'm super excited to explore its library
The Sega Saturn was not a console I thought I'd enjoy as much as I did, I imported one from Japan and with it the seller had just a bunch of games. And since, I've gotten even more, I got 33 games total now, it's been a wild ride for sure.
I got a few recommendations: for anyone who likes Dragon Ball Z I think Dragon Ball Z Shin Butoden is stellar. For any Gundam fans out there, the Side Story trilogy is a great one. Another one I recommend is Virtual On, I actually prefer the Saturn version over the Dreamcast just because the Saturn has more buttons, so the game plays a lot better. Unless you're willing to get one of those Virtual On arcade sticks.
Look at this channel is steadily growing :)
Glad I'm a part of the journey! My kid also loves your channel and thinks you're hilarious
Thank you for your support!
Every single pick you choose were fantastic picks.
My personal favorites in random order are all mostly arcade ports, X-Men VS Street Fighter, Sega Rally Championship, Die Hard Arcade, Fighters Mega Mix, Night Warriors Darkstalkers Revenge, Alien Trilogy , NBA Jam T.E, The legend of Oasis,Shining The Holy Ark , Princess Crown, Outrun and Power drift.
We neeeeed a "Zapper vs Stunner" video!! 😍
This was the first time ever that I discovered "Sega's Zapper"! So cool! Never knew that Saturn had something like Zapper. And I get why it's colored like a "kid's toy", I think that's a great thing.
I believe that almost all of us that were not Sega gamers back then didn't know about Stunner.
SaGa Frontier is a great game that got played a lot over here back in the day. The mechanics of the series take more getting used to than most games in the genre; but it's an excellent series overall.
I love to see the love for skies of Arcadia. Sega needs to port it to modern platforms. Such an underplayed gem.
A Sega vid (except for the 32X) is always going to be awesome, definitely good stuff man. Your list is solid, just going through all of the great fighters and shooters really covers a lot. Games would add to the list are Sonic Jam, Die Hard Arcade, Dungeons and Dragons Collection, SuperPuzzle Fighter, and Saturn Bomberman. I never considered trying that w/Ready Player One though 😅
Retro Bird on the late night
"Life is unpredictable, but the SEGA Saturn will always have great shoot-'em-ups."
The music for Radiant Silvergun exclusively uses the Saturn sound board. A triumph to what the Saturn is capable of. Saturn has always been the top of my list. Everything else comes second.
What a perfectly timed video since we just got a Sega Saturn and are very very green to the whole console.
Great video once again, Retro Bird! Just wanted to tell you that I'm enjoying the SNES so far, it's my first retro console! I'm playing Super Mario World
That's awesome!
Just got Sega Saturn in the mail today with Batman Forever The Arcade Game and i had more fun playing that than I did playing any modern games
Nice! Such a fun game!
Awesome video, incredible console. I have wireless Saturn controllers and a Satiator with a complete rom set. I now have access to all the bangers without the high cost.
Great list man! You'd be my ideal gaming buddy in another life 🤣 also don't worry i'm sure they'll release an adapter one day for the NES book games 😉
I really wish they’d make a Saturn mini. I’ve never had a Saturn, and it’s pretty tough to emulate. I feel like Saturn is kinda becoming a forgotten system.
I just got a Saturn it’s full of fighting games 😂
I always get impressed with how good you are at shooters!
Great list! There are so many more excellent Saturn games, it can be hard to know where to start.
The kids really enjoy Guardian Heroes and Daytona USA (flawed graphics be damned, the sound and gameplay are perfect).
Also, as usual, your gags are freaking top notch, lol!
Christmas Nights, Daytona USA, DecAthlete, Fighters Megamix, Manx TT Superbike, Sega Rally, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Virtua Cop 2, and Virtua Fighter Remix/2
Panzer Dragoon was an inspiration for a title we were developing in the early Oculus days. Hope to return to Vanguard V someday.
I avoided buying a Sega Saturn for so long due to price point.
I was taking a look at Japanese Saturns on eBay and scored mine a couple years ago for $175 free shipping! It came in 3 days from Japan! It was in the original box and came with 5 games, an original 6 button controller, and the 3D joystick controller!
Absolutely zero regrets!
Oh man, Soukyugurentai is such an amazing game. Glad you showed it some love. Probably the second best shmup on the Saturn behind Radiant Silvergun. And I am one of those people who call it “I don’t know but its a good game” lol
Still my favorite console after all these years. Long live Saturn!…
Sega Saturn has some really good classic, I found some really good ones from Japan even my favorite anime has some games for the Sega Saturn
Those are good recommendations. I don't have CRT, but I still got Virtua Cop 1 and 2 and House of the Dead anyway. They'd be more fun and easier with a CRT for certain, but I make do. I really like the fighting games (not the Mortal Kombat games though.)
I had and still own a number if consoles. Saturn ranks as one of my all time favourites
Bought a Saturn at USA launch. It’s still my favorite console.
Love your videos and I too have a great love for bananas. Ha ha great ending to the video btw
I was on craigslist like 6 years ago and i got a sega saturn cib, the analog controllers and a game gear for $20. Best deal i ever got.
Been really considering picking a Saturn up. Video makes some convincing arguments to do so!
i loved wing arms, iron storm, pto II, and romance of the three kingdoms IV wall of fire. good times
I adore the look of the Sega Saturn
In my opinion it's the best looking video game console of all time
I love the way the super Nintendo look to tho most ppl don't agree with me
I think what's really overlooked on the Saturn, especially with imports, is racing games (and especially with the circle pad). Initial D (some may say the PS1 version was better), Sega Touring Car Championship, Sega Rally Championship, Touge King 1 & 2, Gale Racer, Daytona USA, Over Drivin GT-R (it's Need for Speed 1 but only Nissan), Impact Racing, Doozy-J, ChoroQ, GT-24, Manx TT, Shutoku Battle 97, Wipeout, and, of course: Outrun.
Fuck yeah, Vampire Savior is awesome. I got a jp Saturn last year along with about 15 bangers for relatively cheap. I got tired of my us Saturn collection being gimped by the market. I have some real bangers for that region too, like panzer 2 zwei, megaman 8 & x4, nights, and a couple other notable ones... but they're just not available for the cheap like they used to be. The import market is the way with this console. I'll just say that the jp versions of the games I bought probably would have cost about 4-5k us if I got the north american versions.
Shining force 3, dragon force, enemy zero, shining wisdom(shining the holy arc or albert odyssey), alien trilogy(or quake or duke nukem 3d)
Don't have a saturn and never did. Have very little desire to try it. But still loved the video as always. Such great content. Keep it up.
When I was a kid we had only virtua cop 2. We never bought another game for the system. We actually played it a lot.
I liked what he had to say
I wish I could have played the Saturn or at least tried it back then - I remember seeing a preview of Nights Into Dreams and thinking it looked cool, but the system quietly faded after the release of the N64 and PlayStation. I hardly heard anything about it and had forgotten about it during those years, but it looks like it has a lot of cool 2D games I'd love to try out.
I have to recommend the Dungeons & Dragons arcade games for the Saturn. The load times are brutal and they are Japanese only, but as far as 2D beat em ups go-they are must play material! Beautiful 2D graphics and satisfying pick up and play combat.
shining holy arc is a must have for rpg fans, as well as any fan translated rpg, lunar, ogre battle and shining force 3.
