    Some notes from reading the comments:
    -Apparently TH-cam sub boxes were broken this morning. If you liked it, please show this video some love so that this doesn’t affect it’s momentum. It’s not a very searchable video so I was relying pretty heavily on you subscribers to want to watch it.
    -I’ve been told Retro Fighters added the octagonal divots to the thumbstick based on user feedback. That’s very strange to me.
    -Some people say this controller is made for fighting games. In that case, the octagonal divots would make sense, but some are claiming those are for platformers.
    -People wanted me to play Smash with this controller. I did too. I thought I had it but apparently I’ve never owned a copy :(
    -A bunch of people are trying to “educate” me on the different control schemes in Perfect Dark and Goldeneye. I know about them. They aren’t relevant for this video. But if you’d like to hear me talk about the best ones, here’s an old vid where I do th-cam.com/video/fMP4gz-fhf0/w-d-xo.html
    I believe that’s it. Oh and of course there’s a lot of people who take offense to my opinion on the N64 in general. You’re allowed to like it. We can disagree and still love each other 🤗

      Making the N64 gate circular would be as jarring as making the Xbox One gates octagonal. Muscle memory is extremely important.

      People just like to complain based on looks really. The D-Pad placement on this is worthless because games don't use both the analog stick and D-Pad. It's either/or. The original configuration is way more comfortable with that in mind. But all these "new and improved" N64 controllers boast you can reach both. It just confirms they don't know what system and games they're designing the controller for.

    I loved my N64. The controller was never an issue. It was two controllers in one, depending on the game you were playing you either had your hand by the analog stick, or you had your hand by the d-pad. The design was genius, Nintendo out did themselves with it. And then they perfected the controller with the GameCube controller. And in my personal opinion, nothing to this day, has beaten the GameCube controller.

    You do realize that retro fighters originally designed the controller with a circular gate. But the number one request by customers and fans was for an octagonal gate so they switched. This wasn't an arbitrary decision. People want the octagonal gate. It actually makes moving certain angles way way easier in platformers..which is what the N64 is known for...

    • @kirbyofthestarsfan
      @kirbyofthestarsfan 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Still the placement of the joystick it's awful

    • @jmac1039
      @jmac1039 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Meta Knight having the joystick in the middle on the original controller isn't great. I'm not debating that. I'm debating the fact that it wasn't an oversight or a mistake on retro fighters end that they went with an octagonal gate instead of a circular one. People wanted the octagonal gate it was their number request after they released the original design.

    • @jmac1039
      @jmac1039 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Meta Knight remember the N64 controller was designed with Super Mario 64 solely on the mind. The octagonal gate is there for a reason. In 3D platformers especially in that era, reach certain angles is much much easier with using the notches that the octagonal gate provides

    • @WulffDen
      @WulffDen  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I did NOT know this. I don’t see how this helps for anything other than fighting games or 2D games. 3D games read all degrees of movement. Unless I’m missing something?

    • @jmac1039
      @jmac1039 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I want to be clear though, I do agree that the original N64 controller is pretty trashy. I'm not defending the controller itself; just the need for an octagonal gate, and the fact that the original brawler 64 had a circular gate much like you were asking for. Now there are reasons the brawler 64 wouldnt need an octagonal gate: A. The stick is not as sensitive as an N64 stick. The N64 stick is one of the more sensitive sticks in video game history. When tested with an everdrive barely touching it gives you movement. So if you want to jump upper right, you want that upper right notch there so you can get there exactly with just a slight touch. I don't think it's something you'll notice as much playing casually but ask anyone that speedruns any of those platformers those notches come in handy. The Brawler 64 doesn't have as sensitive a stick although it's still very sensitive and works well. The second reason is the stick itself isn't thin like the n64s so it's a little easier to be precise without the notches. But still you can find it on update 3 on their kickstarter they caved due to backers demands for an octagonal gate.

  • @Gamechamp3000
    @Gamechamp3000 6 ปีที่แล้ว +166

    I disagree completely on the divots; I actually feel like we've taken a step back in removing them. It's extremely rare that I ever want to move in a direction other than the 8 cardinal directions, and getting exactly on any of them is pretty much impossible. Some games account for this by automatically making you moving in the cardinal directions if you're within a certain range, but this makes movement feel awkward and imprecise. I would rather have to occasionally make the willful attempt to move out of the cardinal directions than have to constantly willfully attempt to stay on them. It's also worth noting, of course, that the original N64 stick had these divots as well; to remove the divots would be an unnecessary change that goes beyond the scope of ergonomic and build quality improvements.

    • @WulffDen
      @WulffDen  6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      But why be limited to one of those 8 cardinal directions at all when the N64 controller can register 360 degrees of movement?

    • @Gamechamp3000
      @Gamechamp3000 6 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      The value in moving directly on one of the 8 cardinal directions is higher than the value in moving in any of the directions inbetween. It's more efficient to move straight forward towards an object than slightly up-left, and aiming perfectly straight forward without a divot takes focus. And it's not that you explicitly can't move in the directions inbetween; it just takes more effort to misalign the stick from the divots if you absolutely need to. This is assuming, of course, the controller has been properly designed and doesn't ever stop the stick from moving before reaching the point the N64 recognizes as maximum tilt. Full disclaimer: I haven't actually used the controller in the video, I'm more familiar with divots as done on the Gamecube and official N64 controllers.

    • @WulffDen
      @WulffDen  6 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      My biggest issue with this is when I’m pressing a direction all the way, then want to change direction while still maintaining momentum. For example, if I’m running straight and wanna quickly change to running left. On an Xbox or PlayStation I spend a lot of time rolling the sticks around in this way. On this controller it rubs around and clicks and feels harsh. On an actual N64 controller the notches are less noticeable because they’re angled differently and the sensitivity doesn’t require you to press that hard. This controller feels more similarly to a GameCube controller, so if that’s what you’re thinking of then you have the right idea. Retro Fighters made it this way due to popular demand, so clearly people wanted it. It must make sense for fighting games, which is what this controller was originally designed for. I think it feels weird in some games that allow for full 360 degrees of movement.

    • @daSEGAfanatic
      @daSEGAfanatic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I know what he means.
      Not to long ago I got Sonic Adventure 2 Battle for XBone and it just felt so weird having to consciously keep the stick at 12'o'clock to move forward (with the XBones controller having no divots) and at high speeds I would harder time then usual keeping control or not overshooting a turn, when back then I had the game on GameCube it was not as conscious and a little more natural, and only when I was doing more precise platforming would I have to kinda focus on where the stick is tilted.
      Maybe that's it though, maybe that's a relic of designing controllers with platforming titles in mind(?) personally, I wouldn't mind having them on my Xbox one controller for my modern games, might even like it.

    • @MrDeadmanwalken1
      @MrDeadmanwalken1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      BrodaciousBo I personally think not having those divots makes it more challenging and requires some skill. While having them feels like somewhat of a crutch and limiting factor to the full potential of the controller. If you think about it with 360° angle games it could limit movement timing and fluidity

    The stick doesn't lose its stiffness with age, it loses it with use. All the mechanical parts are made of plastic. When they are grinding onto each other, they become smaller and create plastic residue (white dust). The most noticeable one is the bottom shell receptacle which when its ground down by the stick, gradually makes it sink down further and further, losing the tension of the spring at the top of the stick box and ultimately losing "stiffness". I've repaired some, I have my own technique, but there are lots of videos on youtube showing how to do it.

    Zelda OoT: Finished.
    Mario: Played to winter area.
    Conker's BFD: Played about 3/4.
    Shadowgate: Rented for a couple days.
    Castlevania: Played about half.

    I busted apart an old n64 controller (and it did have to be broken to get apart) What I found was a ring with 4 contact points. These points pressed against brass contacts. What I discovered was the contact points were all worn down- some almost to being flush with the ring. And the inside of the controller was filled with grey plastic filings. The wearing was not because of abuse, just use. The controller was designed and built to wear down.

    • @alexodonnell8799
      @alexodonnell8799 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That's true but the jagged edges became integral for certain melee techniques. So while the original N64 controller wasn't made with smash in mind, the jagged edges ended up being useful and therefore important to bring over to the Brawler 64 Gamepad controller.

Now my game library was limited because it belonged to a daycare at my old school so I never used any of the yellow buttons or the D-pad, BUT I did go back and discovered that they had upgraded to a PS2 and NONE of the kids wanted to play with the N64, so after 5 minutes of coaxing them to give it to me, I AT LAST have been re-united with my very first game console. The joystick gets wobbly because it's mechanical and is in an actual box. The joystick itself grinds the bottom of the box down. It's the bottom of the box that keeps the joystick firm. Grinding a hole into the bottom of the box creates space under the joystick, causing the once firm joystick to become loose and wobbly.

    People say MARIO 64 and OOT are the best games of all time because of what they achieved when they were released. Not how they compare to other, more modernised games. Also, comparing games such as these to modern games are like comparing a 1940’s car to a Bugatti. It’s an unfair comparison. Of course the latter will be better. The form of the N64 is still better (stated having played with other N64 controllers using modern designs). These videos never seem to contemplate how comfortable the controller is or how intuitive and expanding the Z-trigger placement is. You can see the issue in the GoldenEye and Perfect Dark parts of the video. The controller was built around that concept just as much as it was built around analog functionality. Moving the Z-trigger to a modern place on the controller just so you can have a useless D-pad in a place that makes more sense on other controllers misses the point and damages that control scheme.
    Also, for what it's worth, I just picked my 20-year-old N64 controller with probably 1,000 game hours on it and and the analog stick is tighter (presumably by design) than my Switch Pro Controller with only a little bit of wobbliness that in the center that doesn't hurt gameplay at all. I'm sure modern controllers are more resistant to wear, but teenage me seemed to be able to not destroy it, so it can't be that bad and its reputation is probably a product of an internet narrative as actual hardware malfunction. Incidentally, I did suffer an analog stick failure on my first Gamecube controller.
    Anyway, N64 controller forever. I'm sick of people putting it down.

      The analog stick on the Hori is WAY better than the Retro Fighter.
      Sure, the buttons are a little small but it's not even that bad, compare it to the Switch Joycon or even the PS1/PS2 trigger buttons and there isnt much difference in size.
      The QUALITY on the Hori is way superior as well. So yeah, it's a bit more expensive but you are purchasing quality (and some rarity as well).
      If you want something better than the original N64 controller, Retro Fighter may do the job, but its far from the best N64 controller. That title easily goes to the Hori. - I have many N64 pads and 4 Hori minis. And the difference is obvious.
      Added note, it's not even that small. I have a SNES and PS1/PS2 controller next to it and its right there in size with them (it's smaller than modern controllers or even the Dreamcast pad but thats fine)

      Dualshock is the best really. Your just used to it in a certain position but that don't mean dualshock is bad. The symmetry is awesome and I find the displacement on other controllers just plain wierd. I hate when people state their opinion as fact. You of course don't play on one regularly. Btw I have to say the the ps4 is the most comfortable controller I've ever had. It's ergonomics are great and the symmetry allows both hands to be in a comfortable position. I seriously think they have no need to change is as that would change something iconic to their console. By far the best controller scheme to exist imo

    There are stick replacements inspired by the gamecube stick which are the perfect solution.
    Consoles FPS had a unique experience with the middle hold, the z button was like holding a gun trigger.

    What about the 3rd grip style, left/center? Works with most fps on the n64, option 1.2 in Golden Eye. D pad moves, stick looks. Mimics modern layout perfectly. Can't do that with this controller.

    "Nobody used this play style"
    Some games did, Kirby 64 for example.
    And yes, the joysticks loosen with age, you can see why in the very shot you say that in. Do you see all that white powder inside of your joystick? That's from the plastic rubbing off over the years which is what makes it wobbly (the analog stick contains several moving plastic parts). You can replace the joysticks if you want to feel what a new one is like. They require no soldering to replace as the joystick component is completely modular.

    I've started building a retro collection, and got an N64 because I had such great memories about playing Mario 64 and Goldeneye. Once I got it set up... I couldn't believe how unusable the original controller felt. Did I just not know any better as a kid? Was I more adaptable back then? Either way, I just ordered one of these controllers and I'm curious how it will work out.

    I took apart an n64 controller. Which had to be broken apart. And I found out why the stick got wobily. There are plastic nubs which press against metal contacts. And with normal use, the plastic nubs would wear down. The inside of my controller had some grey plastic dust in it. And you could see where the wear happened. I don't think Nintendo intentionally designed it to fail. I think they were just inexperienced. Future sticks were later changed because of it.
