Minolta SRT 101 stuck shutter button and after thoughts

  • This video describes what I thought was a bigger problem than it was and the simple (but rough) solution. This could have been a fluke problem as I cant imagine how it happened. This fix is not recommended for any camera that has great value attached to it. Also there are some observations after the fact.
    Here are two very good videos about this same camera.

    Wow this literally saved (a part) of my vacation. I just arrived in Senegal to visit my dad for a while month and during the first day my shutter got stuck. The timer was at the the 10 o’clock position like you mentioned. I forced it and click click everything is working properly now. Thank you so much!!

    Wow, this video saved my camera! I was having the same problem on my 202 for a while, and although I fiddled with the mechanics under the cover, I never had any luck, but never tried to force the jammed shutter too hard. I thought this video wouldn't be the same issue, but I noticed your timer was in the same position and finally tried to force it with a screwdriver. I heard the click, but then I had to force the rewind knob until I heard a second. Now it's working great!Thanks again from me and my 202!! :)

      Glad I could help. Just remember that forcing any part in a camera is a roll of the dice.

    Holy shit this actually worked. Shutter was stuck, timer stuck at about 10 o’clock position. Reset the timer and forced it as it was counting down. You legend!

    I picked up a “grab bag” of photo and video gear and in it was a 101 with the self timer at 10:00. Watched your video and just kept steady pressure (but never forced) on the lever and constantly tapped the shutter. After what seemed forever the timer started and continued until it tripped the shutter.
    I rewound and the shutter release stuck again. So I used the self timer and it stuck at the 10:00. Same routine but this time there was a different sound when the self timer finally continued to advance.
    Now the winder is free, shutter fires and self timer works. Go figure. Thanks for your help!

    Just want to sincerely thank you for uploading this video. I had been trying to fix my camera all day and gave up on it. Decided I’d give it one more search on the internet to see if any one had the same issue and came across this. Your trick fixed it. If I hadn’t came across your video my camera would have been put in a closet never to be used again. Thank you.

    You saved one of my cameras, in this case a Konica Autoreflex T3, same problem, the shutter will get stuck, and playing with the timer will solve the issue. Thank you so much!

    The string provides meter adjustment between the settings in the shutter speed , ASA and aperture opening. Without it the meter will be wrong. Self timer overrides the shutter button when used but can lock it up when dirty or jammed.

    • @tobroken1965
      @tobroken1965  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, had I known what I learned later I could have just given it a push and achieved the same results. If it wont move, there may be more going on and to get to the timer guts the front of the camera will need to come off. Just remember, forcing anything is a bad idea.

    Great video. I just got an SRT 102 and although the shutter seems to be working fine, the shutter index in the viewfinder is not working. It oddly enough worked for the first hour or so after I got the camera, but suddenly seems to be stuck. Any ideas? Thanks.

    • @tobroken1965
      @tobroken1965  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      hmmmmm, one of two things, the little fork at the bottom of the viewfinder (thats what I am guessing you are talking about) that indicates your shutter speed has come loose from the cord that moves it (12:10nin the video) or, the cord has broken or gotten stuck, I nearly cut mine as stated in the video. If it is just loose from the cord, its not a very big deal, if it is stuck and the cord is still slipping through it, that could wear a weak spot in that cord. Check the shutter speeds by ear. If they sound right you may be ok. If not, that cord is stuck, broken or off a pulley. If it were me (and its not) I would take the top off and visually inspect it, checking the entire travel of that long cord as it travels back and forth. Be careful if you go that route, dont touch that cable if you can help it, if it pops off it can wrap around the shutter speed shaft in such a way that it is hard to find and harder to fix. Let me know, I would be interested to hear about what you do with it.

    • @miketungate
      @miketungate 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      tobroken1965 I took a roll of film to see if everything was working even though the viewfinder index wasn’t sliding. The shutter still works perfectly. I took a couple more rolls and then suddenly the index slider started working again.

      @@miketungate Thats good news, the fork must be loose on the cord. Is it giving an accurate reading?

    I wouldn't be able to let it go. For me, if the self-timer doesn't work, the camera doesn't work. I'd get in there and try to fix it, and I wouldn't care if I made it worse, but I'd try my hardest to make it work. Then again, I use the self-timer a lot for landscape photography when I need more light and a shutter speed that's too slow to hand-hold the camera.

    • @tobroken1965
      @tobroken1965  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was hard for me as well and I feel your pain. I was pretty gung ho till I got the top off then my knees got weak. Long story short, if this didnt work I would have dug into it so I was pretty happy when it did, its a good shooter now, I just force myself not to think about the timer.
