    San Francisco
    July 6th, 2013
    A Boeing triple seven carrying over 300 people begins sinking towards the water, on its final approach to San Francisco. The passengers are oblivious to the danger they are in, but the pilots are confused about why their aircraft isn’t responding. Horrified onlookers watch as the massive plane desperately tries to climb. The captain slams the throttle levers fully forwards, but has he done this soon enough to save the plane?
    This is the story of Asiana Airlines flight 214.

      Yeah, it's a scary thought that no one was dialed in. *I think there were only 3 pilots in the cockpit at the time of the crash. (9:08) The 4th was in the cabin & I'll bet he was the one of the 4 who was injured.

      @@Paul_Robinson340 Seems this is more of a lesson in how easy it can be to become complacent--both pilots were quite experienced, even on other planes (i.e. not the 777), but still were able to make basic errors in judgment; this is a theme common in not online commercial airline accidents, but basically any accident involving complex systems. Moreover, as this video showed, one of those errors was actually because of the pilot's experience with the Airbus and lack of experience with the Boeing--his instinct upon approach was to pitch the nose up instead of pushing the throttle because that would have worked on the Airbus that he was accustomed to.

    It's really surprising that there were "only" 3 fatalities given what this plane went through once it was close to the ground (one of them being from the SFFD accident). The video of the crash from an airport building where you can see the aircraft flipping around showed how violent the crash was, and even with all this tumbling only one person inside died.

    • @richardshiggins704
      @richardshiggins704 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      In fact one of the fatalities was that of a Chinese student possibly run over by an attending fire truck .

    • @desmond-hawkins
      @desmond-hawkins วันที่ผ่านมา +5

      @@richardshiggins704 Yes, that's who I was referring to by "the SFFD accident", SFFD is the San Francisco Fire Department. It was a mess. Even though there were some inconsistent reports initially, there is now no doubt that she was run over. SFFD described it as a "tragic accident" and said the passenger "was alive and lying outside the plane near one of its wings when the trucks ran over her". The parents sued, but somehow the case was settled without a payment. The firefighter who was driving the accident truck sued the city for being made a scapegoat instead of SFFD taking responsibility for the overall botched response, and he settled for $250k.

    • @Passions
      @Passions วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@desmond-hawkins There's no doubt she was run over, however the question is whether or not she was alive prior to being run over. SF covered it up stating she was deceased already. However the city coroner said she was alive. An autopsy determined that she died from "multiple blunt injuries that are consistent with being run over by a motor vehicle. Our forensic examination revealed that she was still alive when she received those injuries". Also the case was settled with an undisclosed monetary payment. An attorney for Ye’s family, Gretchen Nelson, said the parties had reached “a confidential settlement on mutually agreeable terms,”

    • @desmond-hawkins
      @desmond-hawkins วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Passions Ah yes I remember these disagreements over whether she was still alive. I'm not where you're getting the "undisclosed monetary payment" though, where is that from? In an article about the lawsuit being dropped, which cites the same "mutually agreeable terms" quote as you did, they report: "The city attorney's office said no money was paid to the family to dismiss their lawsuit".

      One little known fact is that the only major international airline not to have suffered a crash or an incident involving injury in more than 50 years is Aer Lingus.
      Many people attribute this to the company policy of one completely manual take off and landing by every crew once a week.
      They can obviously still use the automation if things start to go wrong.
      Maintaining good manual flying skills is something ignored by far too many airlines these days. This video is a prime example. I am not saying that other pilots do not do it. but their are no company guidelines
      Another Aer Lingus policy, is check lists regularly tested by memory from the pilot calling them. In this case they are encouraged to change the order to best meet the the current situation.
      To most people it is fairly obvious that Sully did not save all those lives by reading scraps of paper.

    I got really into these videos bc of how interesting they were about a year ago only to find myself (a psych student) absolutely obsessed with them!! Not only are they amazingly written and edited but I also love the approach with which you think about these videos because they raise awareness about the psychological processes that underlie human behavior, leading to a chain effect that also impacts the other people present. Never thought these topics could be so related!! Keep up the good work👏👏

    I know there's a lot going in the cockpit during a descent, and they were probably fatigued, but I find it baffling that someone could move the power back to idle and then a few minutes later think "why is the power not increasing" but not make any attempt to increase the power.

    I remember this crash. I flew into SanFran the day before with Delta. As we were landing, we suddenly went back up into the air. It freaked me out! I can't remember who he was anymore but the guy next to me had experience with planes or something... I guess he noticed I was confused and he actually said to me that the runway was doing some construction/repairs and he just explained a bunch of stuff about how planes land and why it might have taken back up suddenly and why were were fine. The next day, I woke up and saw the crash on Korean news. I just kept thinking about the things the conversation with the guy on the plane.
