  • A jammed shutter curtain on a Minolta X-370 or a X-600 that is crinkled and wrinkled. For example the shutter curtain on a Minolta XG1 or XG7 can also have the same malfunction, all caused by the shutter curtain connecting bands slipping off of their guide rollers. This video attempts to show how to access and repair the shutter band roller issue causing the jammed and wrinkled shutter on a Minolta X-series camera.

    This was extremely informative! Thank you. I was able to snag an otherwise wonderful condition X-700 from a thrift store for $20, and it worked great through half of a roll before the curtain started having issues. With your video, I have the confidence to put that $20 on the line, and DIY it.

    On a couple of your videos you describe adjusting the position of the blue gear in relation to the idler gear. I know there's a timing mark on the blue gear but what I don't understand is what you're lining it up with. Is there a similar mark on the idler gear to match it up with?

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is not, you have to experiment with the position of the second gear to determine the proper position. After you to it a few times it will become instinctual.

      Indeed that would be a good piece of accessory equipment to feature in a FOC video. If it is hesitant to wind, but still cycles lubrication of the the various gear post hubs might help. Also check the MD timing contacts of the camera body you are using it on for positive connectivity.

      Pliobond. It is forgiving while it is curing to allow for secondary repositioning if needed. Once it is completely cured it is strong and long lasting. It can be cleaned up from most surfaces with alcohol and for the most part is safe on plastics.

    Hi what would you recommend to glue new leatherette to a camera? Im replacing all the leatherette on my Contax with a vinyl with cloth back. I used pliobond as recommended by many but the smell was just putrid beyond what I can tolerate. Any recommendations?

    • @FixOldCameras

      Yes, the warning label on the container advises to avoid prolong exposure and to use in a well ventilated area. This camera repairman has been using it for so long that it has become an accepted part of the process. However, it is strong and it is understandable that some would want to avoid it. The are several brands of permanent glue sticks that work quite well for attaching most flexible leatherette and yet still allowing for future removal should it be necessary. If the leatherette is to stiff for successful use of the glue stick, double sided transfer tape can be used.

    I'm working on my X570 with the same issue. I'm at the point of the separation of the shutter housing and wanted to know how "the shutter can be manually tripped" for testing. Thanks!

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The shutter cam gears are typically gray plastic and the shutter wind gear is typically blue plastic... nestled between the shutter cam gears stack and the shutter wind gears will be the shutter latch lever (typically brass colored) flick the lever and the wound curtains will release. You can then wind the curtains again by placing your thumb on the wind gear and rotating away from the shutter proper.

    Hello. I'm having problem with repairing minolta x-700 with no movement of diaphragm-control lever when i fire shutter.
    I managed to remove the lens holder to look around the lever but couldn't get any good results.
    Everything seems to work fine but the aperture-control lever, which results in no control of lens aperture.
    Do you know how to fix it? Thank you!

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the aperture lever does not move in all modes (causing the lens aperture to stay open upon release) the most likely cause is the aperture control magnet has failed or is sticking because of an oil film or is being held because of a mechanical linkage malfunction. Not as likely, but still possible, the camera could also have an electronic control failure, which would also be the cause if the issue is isolated to the P mode.

    • @FixOldCameras

      Peel up the rounded off triangle shaped leatherette cover over the advance lever position. Under it you will find two screws. Once the screws are removed the remaining plate can be lifted free to reveal the advance lever retainer.

      A nearly invisible film of corrosion on the battery lid often blocks the current flow. Make sure the battery lid contact is polished clean. Another easy although often temporary fix demonstrated here.

    i have a problem on my Minolta xg-s (xg-9), the curtain moves to the right when I advancing the lever as it can fire. but the curtain wont open at highest speed. when at Bulb, the curtain only open halfway when I fire the shutter, but then the curtain will not fully close after that. I have to push the curtain to the left manually with my fingers to close it and in order to advance the next frame. Can you please help me. Thank you.

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably needs the shutter curtain tension increased or the shutter curtain band (the ribbon rerouted on to pulley in this video) glue has dried out and has allowed the tension to slip. If that is the case any tension adjustments that you do will not hold and the shutter curtain unit will have to be repaired.

    What can you tell me about a minolta x7a camera, that when it is on high shutter speed, it fails to do so, photos come out under exposed? I was told it was a shutter issue?

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the exposures are even yet underexposed, then it could be a meter issue as well as a shutter issue. Check camera / lens settings and aperture linkage as well if you have not already done so. Is the ASA set correctly? A simple fix, but easy enough to over look.

  • @ColdieGoldie93
    @ColdieGoldie93 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a problem with slow speeds on my XG-M, the shutter curtain is a bit sticky, it doesn't move all the way to the left, it needs maybe a couple of mm, but it seems ''closed''. Also, when advancing to the next frame it is a litle tough in the beginning, and after a few degrees it continues as it should. The faster speeds work properly. If the light seals have perhaps deteriorated and lodged in the tracks, is it possible to clean them?

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Increase the curtain tension a small increment and check the main wind gear in the bottom of the camera for depth of engagement and proper tooth alignment. There is an adjustment screw, when loosened, that allows for this adjustment. If you are unsure as to how to proceed, and are very patient an FOC video will eventually be produced covering this issue.

    • @ColdieGoldie93
      @ColdieGoldie93 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your reply! I did an adjustment of those gears on an X-700 if l remember correctly, but I'm not sure how to increase the tension on the curtains. I had to do that on a Zenit, but it was pretty obvious, since there are 'cogs' under the bottom plate, and when turned add more tension or slack on the curtains.

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The shutter tension adjustments are underneath the battery chamber. You will need to move the plate that contains the battery chamber to gain access to the adjustments. You can leave the battery contacts attached if you are careful, just fold the plate over out of the way. There are some FOC videos on adjusting the curtain tension of various cameras you might watch. Also this video gives a detail view of the style of shutter assembly you will be working with. th-cam.com/video/HhtlqzLlRBA/w-d-xo.html

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Heat applied to the head of the stubborn screw from the tip of a soldering iron should help. BE AWARE... the bottom plate of a X370 could be foil covered plastic. Do not allow the tip of the hot iron to come in direct contact with the bottom plate of the camera.

    Is my Minolta Xg-a broken if the advance lever does not move the two dowels inside the film chamber

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The camera will not wind, if the shutter has not been released. The shutter will not release if the battery is not good. If the battery is good and the shutter still does not release then check for a nearly invisible film of corrosion on the battery cap. Even the slightest hint of corrosion will block the current flow from the battery.

      If the display turns off when the shutter button is pressed and will not come on again until after the on/off switch is set, the problem is probably the Timing Switch is not closing. Peel back the leatherette below the self -timer switch to gain access to this switch.

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Both are electronic release. Simple, but important. If no power, check battery contacts for invisible film of corrosion and polish all contacts. If power, but no release, check for proper voltage from batteries. Otherwise, mechanically trip the shutter... if not, jammed mechanical function; if release, electronic circuit or switch contact issue.

      @@FixOldCameras I stated those batteries are fresh. Means & tested with DVM.
      Were those educated guesses or saying something that you have never worked on?

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@angelisone You make me smile... for decades the narrative goes like this. Customers insist the batteries are "fresh". On a digital volt meter that might even check out close to or right on the required voltage. However, a digital volt meter does not give a read out of voltage under the load demand of the camera release cycle. It does not give the available current under load on a voltage reading. The release cycle of most classic electronic release cameras is usually the highest current demand of all of the camera's functions. In addition classic cameras are prone to developing a nearly invisible non conductive film on the contacts. If assumptions are made to the validity of the availability of proper current flow level from the battery through the contacts, without solid confirmation, than a simple fix is overlooked and unneeded disassembly and troubleshooting is pursued. To state the obvious again... it is worth double checking and not assuming the battery and battery contacts are not problematic. Finally, electronic cameras that are still locked up with confirmed release power availability can have an electronic failure, a mechanical failure or an electro-mechanical failure. All which would apply to your brief description. Thank you for your interest in Fix Old Cameras.

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      comprobar estado de la batería... limpiar los contactos de la batería
      The Minolta XG-2 as a battery dependent release and the slightest film of corrosion on the contacts will prevent operation. The film of corrosion is often not visible at casual glance and the battery cap is usually the culprit. Polish and clean the inside of the battery cap.

      bateria...?
      Check for a light nearly invisible layer of corrosion on the battery lid/cover. The Minolta X-9 is battery depended for release and even the smallest film of corrosion can block the current flow from the battery thus effectively locking up the camera advance. Also sometimes the curtain will hang up as shown here...
