- Install and first ride on the KLX250 with the 13T sprocket! It pulls the wheel off the ground a lot easier now!

Is there any difference in disc / sprocket bolt patterns for klx300sm vs klx300? Ie could I put a 40t klx300 sprocket on a klx300sm 17in rear wheel?
serious question for anyone that sees this comment as im new to klx250s, does one tooth make that much of a difference

You better check the chain slack again. It looked tooooo tight in the video! It needs close to 2" of play. You can check the manual. Just don't want you to damage anything :)
Just measured it at 1.5 inches! 🙂 (the sticker says 1.4-1.8 inches)
Are you measuring from the bottom of the chain to the bottom of the chain when pulled down and pushed up? It didn’t look like it was moving nearly enough
2-3 fingers has always been my go to for chain slack.
Wow the front sprocket nut is absolutely stuck on my bike. I’ve tried an air impact and a huge breaker bar. Nothing. I’m going to let some penetrating oil work in overnight and try again tomorrow.

You were going to have to make a small adjustment anyway and there is nothing wrong with how you did the job, but I thought I'd let you know another method for dealing with the chain dismount/remount that you'll hopefully find easier than that when you eventually have other things to do such as tires, brakes, etc..
If you put the bike up in the air, you can remove the axle without moving your adjusters at all. When you reassemble it, you're still good. Adjusters absolutely need to be checked/moved when you need to add/remove chain slack, but the cool thing about this design is you don't have to for most other jobs.

Good job ..although ur chsin is abit to tight Mr..run 2 or 3 fingers about 4 in from the front pivot point that's a good easy way
Thanks for the easy tip! I swapped back to the stock 14T for the 351 and measured the chain slack this time. I'll check to see if I can get a couple fingers in there, now that I know how tight it should be
I need a speedohealer. When my speedo says 65mph, GPS says 62mph.

It makes the torque more usable, yes. The 13T raised cruising RPM by about 500 if I remember correctly. So, it wasn't that bad actually.
Does changing to a 13 tooth front sprocket affect the speedometer and odometer readings?
No, for the 2018+ bike at least, the speedometer is off the front wheel. I believe it is the same for the 2009+ carbed bikes as well.

My top speed video I did was with 13-42 gearing. I think I hit an indicated 93 in that video. I need to run the 351 out all the way now. I think I hit 96 or 97 in a video with it

you wanna wheely you got to bounce on seat compressing rear suspension you get your timing write itll come up easy without the high revs and lots of clutch

Your best bet is you use a micrometer on the axle blocks to assure proper axle alignment. $20 bucks on Amazon.

Hey what 13t did you buy? I have been searching online and can't seem to find details on what will work for a 2020 klx250. Should be the same as your 2018 right?

13T gives more acceleration but lower top speed right?
In general, yes. Sometimes, it may give better acceleration and top speed because it allows the bike to be in the powerband or "use the power more effectively"

I was on the rear brake and still powering through the brake.. shit isn’t loosening at all. Sprayed it with PB blaster. Still nothing.
I stuck my corded impact on mine, in neutral, while holding the rear brake. Some people have stuck a 2x4 through, so the wheel doesn't turn. Others have gotten real creative with creating some very large breaker bars (like PVC pipe).
@@jhmotorclub6916 thanks for the help! I ended up getting lucky and my friend had an air gun and a compressor lol did the trick. Kawasaki is insane with whoever puts those bolts on 🤦♂️.

@@jhmotorclub6916 I know you did this awhile back but did you have any trouble torquing the front bolt back on? Seems like even with weight on my back break I can’t reach the click point without the whole thing moving lol.
Not that I can remember. I think I torqued it once, but then I ended swapping back and forth a few times. For those times, I figured tight is tight lol

13T with the big bore kit should put you right where you want to be for the riding that you do most days. The bad is that one new sprocket on an old chain could shorten the life of the chain and both sprockets depending on the amount of wear. Get your gearing right using the old stuff and then replace all of it once you figure out the perfect combination for your riding style and needs...
I'm liking the stock gearing for all around riding so far with the big bore. It has enough power to pull the gearing now. On the highway trips, the revs stay relatively low for cruising at 65. When the KLX goes supermoto, I will definitely have a 13T for sumo tracks thought

I am happy with the stock gearing as well. I am tempted to have some quick change short gears for off road once I get where I am going if I am going to be camping and riding back woods for a whole weekend...
Maybe one tooth off of the front and one tooth on the back. As long as the same chain fits it is a quick change up.
It might be fun to have to moderate the throttle to keep the front wheel on the ground in 1st and second... lol

...as many mentioned your chain was way too tight....I know a kid who did that on a Harley Sportster...something broke, the heavy chain slung around and broke all kinds of expensive things...

How much do you think it increased the rpms?
About 800 RPMs, based on my highway runs. I'm kind of used to ringing the bike out. So, I don't really notice it too much. Plus, 800 RPMs isn't too much is the grand scheme of things. Better than some of the stunt bikes I've seen and ridden lol
What brand sprocket did you go with brother?

@@itisfinished4U I think JT sprockets has one, but I heard Sunstar was used on a lot of bikes from the manufacturer so I went with them.
Good video, you made it look easy. I've got a 13 tooth front sprocket that I want to change to a 15 tooth. I have a kkx250sf.

where's the speedo pickup on that bike? If it's on the front wheel then it would be ok (still off, but not any more than stock). If it's on the countersprocket, then the speedo is going to be even more off than before.

Chain Was way too tight should have 3 fingers on top of swing arm of play not slapping all over but should have play if you jump or come down hard with that chain tight you going to cause issues

For what I use it for, yes. The KLX is flickable and it has enough now with the big bore to run the highway at about 70 MPH. If I had to go more than 30 miles per day on the highway, I might consider a KLR. However, for stuff less than that or the occasional highway trip, the KLX does alright for me.
@@jhmotorclub6916 ok i was stuck on the klr but want something more like a dirtbike. I have a truck that gets 10mpg in the mountains here and i just sold my r1 and cadilac right before i moved here so now i need something with better gas milage here. I wont be going more than 5 miles awat from home.
@@hurricane8634 The KLX will definitely feel more like a dirt bike. Before I did the big bore, I would get 70 MPG and 100 miles per tank (with a 0.7 gallon reserve). So, with only a 5 mile commute, it should be great for your needs

not to be a dick but can barely call those wheelies. try in 1st and try to find your pivot/balance point.
I am practicing too only been riding 2 years ...my stock klx 300 will get the front tire up up and away if I'm not careful in 2nd....i can get it up in 3rd with allot more clutch... but it is like doing trust falls with ppl that Don t gaf bout you lol....just need more seat time....i think your advice is good that's what I'm working on

@@jhmotorclub6916 I have a 2018 KLX250 and you have to load the front end suspension and then on the rebound pop the clutch and pull the handlebars back, if you do it right you can get it all the way up to balance point
@@kevinbehan9284 I'll practice that when I get back into practicing wheelies again with the big bore. I'm sure it'll take me a few days to get back in the rhythm of things. I'll keep that in mind though
