  • I upgraded the front sprocket to a 13-tooth and kept the stock size 42-tooth (new) on the rear for added torque on the trails. I had some audience participation along the way with my dad giving some great advice and moral support. Some important tips not mentioned is to use a torque wrench when tightening bolts to your bikes' specifications if you decided to change out your sprockets. Also use "blue" loctite on your rear sprocket bolts so they don't loosen up like mine were found to be.
    Parts Used:
    Primary sprocket - 13t Renthal
    Rear sprocket - 42t JT Sprocket
    Chain - 520 ORH Gold X-Ring
    Kenda TrakMaster II K760's (front and rear)

    Dude, I’m a 17yr ACFT Master Tech, I love how well you communicate and how humble & knowledgeable you are as a tech. I love the old head in the back, seems like a bright man. Thanks for the video, brother. I’ll be using this m video to step down my ‘19 250 KLX. I’m hoping this 13 tooth does the trick to wake the KLX up.

    The Greeks have a saying
    " if you don't have an old man around, go out and buy one" I.e. The old men have allot of wisdom!
    The old guy reminded me of my deceased father.
    The old guys just seem to know stuff. What's even more impressive is that they just figured stuff out.
    If I don't have you tube or instructions, I'm lost
    A bit of a rant, thanks for the video.

      I'm with you on that! Thanks to my old man I've rebuilt a Subaru, done timing chains on a Commodore and rebuilt bikes. He's taught me enough that now I can figure stuff out myself

    Thank you so much for this video. You made it look so simple that I had to do it. A 13 tooth sprocket makes it feel like a completely different bike now. My klx 250sf is my daily commuter so I was worried about top end but it's not as bad as I thought it was going to be.

    You did a great job. This is the first mod any one should do if they are trail riding. Or just want to feel a little boost in power. If you only have money for one mod this is it AND you will have gas money left over. It will mess with your speedometer but they have speedo correctors out there if it bothers you. DirtHog365

    Good job brother....fyi....same exact process on the Yamaha r1. Nice tutorial. When I did mine I just had to figure it out! I hope by sharing this vid it will help someone who thinks they can't do this. You made it look as simple as it actually is. Hey are you near the mountains or the coast.....I'm between Greenville and Rocky Mount.

      *****Thanks bro I appreciate that and the share! There was practically no vid help on doing this that I found and hopefully it will help others. I am closer to the mountains than the coast, about 2 hours west of Raleigh. We should get together for a ride sometime since we are practically around the corner from each other!

      Welly Arifin thanks for watching, glad you found the steps simple and useful at the same time. I enjoy making these how-to vids since I am a visual type person and seeing it done helps me tremendously. Great video. What size socket did you use for the front sprocket? I have a 09 klx250sf and my rear sprocket is a 39 tooth from the factory. How much of a difference should I expect regarding freeway speeds with a bigger rear sprocket? Any pros and cons? Thanks

    hey man, i just replaced mine on an 09 klx250sf, but my chains seems really loose? how do i adjust tension on the chain? thanks in advance

    • @DirtHog365MV
      @DirtHog365MV  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +david valencia sorry bud for taking so long to respond, you'll have to loosen the rear axle enough to where you can slide your back wheel back. The clam shell looking adjusters have numbers on them, set them to where you have tension but not overly tight, with about 1-1.5 inches of slack on the bottom of the chain near the kick stand. Tighten everything back up and replace your cotter-pin (very important). A friend helping in all of this is a plus, but it can be done by yourself...check the slack with your heel while sitting on the bike and see if you have enough play in the chain. May also want to check if your chain and see if needs to be replaced, it is always a good measure to replace both sprockets and chain at the same time. Hope that helps and I can throw a how-to vid together on doing this. =0)

    Hey do you know the part number of your fmf muffler by any chance? I got a 07 klx250 also but the fmf website doesn't have one for the 07. Or did you go with 06 muffler? Thanks!

    • @DirtHog365MV
      @DirtHog365MV  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Coleman Parkhill the 07 KLX250s can be a pain in the butt sometimes when looking for farkle and parts alike. Give motorcycle-superstore.com a shot, they've been the best for me at finding parts and accessories. On the Q4 FMF, I used SKU 527026 / Mfr. Part 042156 which will fit 06/07 KLX250s models. =0)

    What is the purpose of doing this? Like how does it effect the bike?

    • @DirtHog365MV
      @DirtHog365MV  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It increases torque by 13%, but drops overall speed by about 13% as well - did this for trail riding versatility vs street riding. =0)

    • @FirstnameLastname-qc3xx

      It will have more torque off the line and “kick” to the acceleration. Apparently it takes a bit off the top end but the debate is never ending lol.

    I can anyone please help me i can't find a klx 13t (for my 2012 kawasaki) . sprocket in my country does anyone know if a kx or kxf sprocket would fit?

      Not sure if it helps, but Sunstar 520 front sprocket 13t (Mfr. Part # 3B113) will fit 2012-14 KLX250s. I used motorcycle superstore to get the parts I needed and they have a full fitment guide. Good luck in your search and thanks for watching! =0)

      +DirtHog365 I rode to work today and it feels great. before the bike would almost feel like it was going to stall out if I didn't give it enough gas. Now I get a better response. It almost feels like the bike should come stick with a 13 tooth... Btw, what do you think about the 351?

    • @DirtHog365MV
      @DirtHog365MV  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +derekkt49 hahahahaaa...I know exactly what you are talking about when it comes to throttle response and knowing it's there when you need it. I'd also suggest adding FMF Q4 and Powerbomb header, along with the carb rejet (vids available for the rejet) if ya haven't done so already. I have considered doing the 351 big bore kit and its on the list, of many lists. Shameless plug here, but check out my buddy Adventures in Real Life who has done a ton of upgrades including the big bore kit. Let'em know I sent ya, he's good at responding to questions and is very insightful/helpful! =0)

      +DirtHog365 I've been watching ARL for the past couple weeks. I like how much detail he puts in his videos... I didn't realize it till now but I already watched your carb video. I have the jet kit but I was waiting to install it till I decided if I wanted a new pipe or not...I bought a 2009 klx 250sf with 800 miles on it for 2800 OTD. I bought it strictly for transportation back and forth to work because I sold my wife's car and now she's driving my Tahoe(trying to save money to pay off student loans). I never planned on loving the bike, but I caught the KLX 250 bug and now realize that I got a good deal on a very reliable bike. I think I want to keep it forever but I'm 29 years 5' 10" 215lbs. lol, here's my question- Am I too big for the bike? Do grown alot of grown men own 250's. my previous bike 3 years ago was a 09 Harley fat bob so I'm new to enduros. I don't won't to put money into it and later realize I need a bigger bike.

    • @DirtHog365MV
      @DirtHog365MV  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +derekkt49 sounds like you got one heck of a deal and yes the KLX250 bug will get a hold of ya real quick., bought mine for just about the same. I highly recommend the rejet. The plus side is that you get a chance to clean it out, especially with the crappy gas we have now, whole other story there, but piece of mind is priceless.
      The KLX250 is highly reliable and won't break the bank either over the years. Sure there are better bikes, but they come with a significant cost and maintenance bill that can be back-breaking, even on the used side of things. I do love the KTM EXC 300, but rare to find one used in my area and buying new is not even an option (plus side of $8K). If ya go up in scale, like a KLR650 - you get more go for the buck, but a heavier bike overall. eveRide channel is where to go for KLR related vids and worth giving him a look/sub if not done so already (yes, another shameless plug).
      TLC goes a long way with any bike and a few mods like the pipe/header and air/fuel filter (get rid of the snorkel) will allow her to breath. Parts are rather cheap, but will be honest - finding direct fit aftermarket parts can be challenging and may need a slight modification. The kickstarter kit is also worth looking into (remember that list I have) - nothing sucks more than a dead battery! You are the perfect height/weight ratio to be on the KLX at stock, but can always adjust spring preload if necessary.
      Lastly, it all depends on what/where you plan on taking her? Would I do a 3-hour road trip on the highway and what not - no, only because I am lazy, like having saddle bags for beer, and stretching out on the Street Glide. However, would I cut her across 6-hours worth of trail riding without a moment's thought (other than gas), absolutely. I have modded her to do exactly what I intend on using her for, a trail bike. As for a commuter bike, you have a winner IMO, it does exactly what you need it to do. My best friend uses his more of a commuter (2007 version) than a tail bike and made the same mods I have done. There are a lot of avenues for the KLX250 - just all depends on what makes you happy! =0)
