This show will really start to hit once Blackbeard shows up.
Most people don't like eps1-3 that much but personally I think this ep was so funny and sweet
I don't understand people who don't like these first episodes, but I guess my sense of humor just jived with it from the get go. Being a huge fan of Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi for the past 15 years doesn't hurt either!
I liked the first three. Very cute and funny.
So excited for this.
And there’s so much actual queerness in this show, just you wait.
The full scope of the queerness of this show slowly reveals itself, and yeah, camp is an inherently q u e e r artform in and of itself, but it's worth the slow burn to get to the full extent of the LGBTQ+ representation in this show. It's really fun and quirky and just also really different and fresh compared to other shows in the pirate genre.
Yes, that is Con O'Neill's voice! You can also see him in Happy Valley, Uncle (his character is quite gender-bendy) and the film Telstar, about the gay music producer (and eventual murderer) Joe Meek.
He was amazing as Val in Uncle.
He was also on Chernobyl.
I recognized him from the series, Cucumber, which also had Fisayo Akinade in it (Mr Ajayi from Heartstopper)

Binged this entire show in one day after your reaction to the first episode. I regret nothing! It was seriously amazing and so gloriously queer. Just you wait until Blackbeard shows up
what is incredible about this show (among other things) is that queer rapresentation is not what you can usually see on tv shows, it's somenthing completely different and yet so queer and so real. I always feel like this is the world as it should be.
And it's incredibly funny!
This show is definitely a slow burn in terms of gay representation. It's definitely more comedy for sure so just enjoy the show for the humor, expect less and then you'll be pleasantly surprised
A bunch of people have pointed out that Rhys Darby was in the original What We Do In The Shadows movie as well as Flight of the Conchords, but you may also recognise him from the Jumanji sequels.
The Dad jokes were hilarious. As was the sword-swallowing remark. You two laugh so well. It's fun just to watch you interact and banter. I love watching you guess where the show is going. You are funny, warm, insightful, connected, and just friendly. Your tone and way of approaching things is just a perfect fit for this show.
Rhys Darby, who plays Stede Bonnet played a hilarious werewolf in What We Do In The Shadows, which has a similar vibe to this show. Irreverent vampire comedy with some queer elements. You might like it. Rhys was also in Flight of the Conchords, and Hunt for the Wilderpeople. The last one, he is in a smallish role. Our Flag Means Death is a real break-out moment for him.
Nathan Foad, who plays Lucius the Scribe (the one who convinced his mother he liked girls), is out as a gay man and is the main creative force behind a show called Newark Newark, which is a semi-autobiographical show based partly on his own growing-up in Nottinghamshire. I can't get that show where I am, but you can probably find it easily. Might be fun for you.
My favorite showwwww! You guys are great! Jim is a great character. They really shine later in the season. The next two episodes are where the show takes off and you really see where it's going. Just excellent. Can't wait for the next episode!
The thing with the tribal people, is they actively did not go down the racist “cannibal” route that so many stories do. They flipped that narrative on its head and made fun of it. Taika is indigenous and he’s the exec on the show, so he may have something to do with that decision.

Think of the first three episodes as Act 1 of season 1. I was kinda bored because this isn't my brand of humor and I generally don't like characters that are just a pack of bumblefucks, but... this isn't a standard sitcom that could go on for an indefinite number of seasons. The plot has structure. They start off establishing the crew as pathetic because the whole story is about misfits who got the short end of the stick. They have to begin at a low point so their story has a place to climb from.

Legally, I'd say he did kill him because what happened was the result of his hitting him with the paperweight. Which may not have been the law at the time, but there's a lot of anachronism here, so let's go with it.
