Shout out for Papa Marcovaldo for being the best father of all Pixar-dom. As a disabled person, I love the representation, and especially the fact that it's not part of his character. He just happens to be a dude missing an arm. I like how he shows them how he can function perfectly well without it, though. Ableism is something I face all the time, and I accept help when I need it, but I try to do something on my own when I'm able.

Even if it's not literally about being gay, it definitely feels like an allegory to me. I remember even thinking it was a bit heavy handed with what the grandma said. Either way, it's such a nice feel-good movie and only reaffirms my desire to go to Italy eventually.

While i believe the director said it wasn’t gay, the animators said it was lmao. I think someone in the writing team said so too. And Jack D Grazer (who is the voice of Alberto) said for him the characters were queer too (while promoting this movie he came out as bi too). Ultimately the Luca team ended up saying that if it has a sequel they would be willing to explore, but the director has made no comments. I think is promising either ways if there is a sequel, but ultimately is not just another “all same sex friendships are a little gay” while not everyone in the production had those intentions, others most definitely did.
I mean the animators can't deny the fact that not even one of them thought 'mmm they kinda look like younger versions of Elio and Oliver'
Well the movie is based on the Director's relationship with his childhood bestfriend, so I would lean on his interpretation being the most accurate. If other people on the project had their own ideas they obviously don't align with the Director who emphatically explained these characters were not gay.
@@eblots projects are more than their inspirations. Animators who had some ideas put those ideas in the way the characters move and look at each other and how the voice actors chose to do it. Regardless of where it was inspired and what the director might have want, people in the team loved the allegory to queer coming out stories and moved as such. Can’t have the sound and look of it say one thing and then deny it bc it was inspired by something else lmao. So much so that they have mentioned the possibility of it becoming explicitly stated in possible sequels. There’s PLENTY of examples of stories that grow and the authors lose control of it to a degree. There’s even stories about that and media literacy on it.
You don't make a movie this gay on accident. The fact that the director said "we weren't thinking about that" THEN in January in an interview for the Wrap he said something to the extent of "we toyed around with the idea of doing a romance between the characters but chose to keep it friendship." Dude... that's pretty evident that it was noticed and some people making the movie wanted it to be a crush. If it was a boy and girl people would say, "This movie is basically the childhood opening of Up but for the whole movie." Cause Luca is timid and shy like Carl and Alberto is reckless and excitable like Ellie. Cause it's two boys they say, "They're only friends!"
I think Giulia was supposed to be queer but the got rid of it because they didn't know how to show it without her having a romantic interest in someone (or maybe because it's just disney)

I don't cry at hardly anything, even Pixar movies which are basically designed to destroy your soul, but this one had me tearing up mulitple times. I think the alegory is very evident, and I thought Alberto's feelings were more overt with how jealous he got over Luca spending time with Julia and wanting to leave to go to school with her. He even stood up to the villain to defend Luca. Plus, he sacrificed the thing he wanted most to make Luca happy. That's like a romcom level grand gesture of love. I'm sure there are friends in the real world who are that selfless, but this is a movie. We are programmed to see that kind of behavior in movies and think they belong together. And, honeslty, if they weren't both boys everyone would be shipping them.

4 grand gestures of love in a row. Luca telling Alberto he'd win the Vespa to show Alberto he matters to him and doing it on his own. Alberto coming to save Luca with the umbrella, Luca saving Alberto from being attacked by Ercole, then Alberto selflessly giving up the Vespa to give Luca the ticket for school. That's at least as many if not MORE than even a romance like Beauty and the Beast. These two are clearly in love.

Honestly I cried at the moment the two ladies put down their umbrellas too. It's like they saw the society was more accepting because of Luca and Alberto, so now they didn't need to hide themselves anymore. I think I cry because I'm gay and I can see it as LGBTQ+ allegory. I know how it feel when you feel like you need to hide your true self from society. It's definitely wasn't easy to come out back in the day and those ladies probably had been through a lot. It's just small moment but it managed to make me cry and that's why I really want Luca to win Oscar this year.
This movie absolutely wrecked me the first time i watched it, especially bc even if you ignore the queer subtext, this shows little boys that they’re allowed to care about their best friends, and that hugging your friends and crying and just expressing any basic emotion is normal. We need more media where boys can just hug each other really tight and talk about their feelings instead of the typical “boys don’t cry” rethoric i see too often. Also rizzo, i was right there with you tearing up lmao

@@PaleoNychus Hello there. I'm gay myself. Yes, I saw what other people did. That said, this whole mindset isn't okay. It's okay to find things in the movie that you'd relate to or could compare to in gay romance, but at the end of the day, they're children.
Of course, children can develop what they consider romantic feelings; it happens. That doesn't mean that if two children are close and have interactions such as these, they're gay. Not only children either, adults as well.
You say to consider whether they'd feel the same if it were a boy and a girl. I say think about whether you'd be saying the same thing you are now if these were real-life children.
Yes, they're fictional characters, but people need to stop romanticizing children. It's creating a very toxic idea that same-sex friendships like the ones in Luca must be gay, and everybody who disagrees is, as you say, a "naysayer."
I still and will always think of Luca as the gay fish movie mostly due to how much I at least saw it as an allegory for being queer and struggling to come out. The hiding who you are, the risk of being outed, the vicious bullies looking for any excuse to eat you alive. Their friendship is by the by really, it could be a romantic one, a crush or it might not be. In straight het relationships (even in children's movie's) romance can be implied with the smallest of glances etc but when it's queer, it's somehow gotta be super explicit. Anyway it's always going to be gay to me even if they're not explicitly.

I actually came out as gay last year after I watched Luca with my parents. I asked them if they saw any allegory in the movie. Then I said I related to Luca but they didn’t get it. So I just said I’m gay. It was a weird way to come out but it went great. Plus the director of Luca liked my story so that was cool.
THAT is beautiful! And honestly, what a fantastic movie to use. I think it probably helps ease hesitant parents more than something like Brokeback ever would 😂 So proud of you!!! 🥰😍

I feel like it was left open to interpretation and that's the way it should be. Esp. for a kids movie. One boy might see that and think "I wish I had a best friend like that" and another boy might see it and think "I wish I had a bf like that".

I watched this movie and I was like wow this kinda gay, then I said that to my family and they were like don't force a relationship on children. hetero relationships are usually forced on children, plus this more of ur first gay crush type a thing not a full on romantic relationship.

i love the idea of this movie as a queer metaphor. it's a great story without it but it just adds a lovely extra layer to it in my opinion. i love the idea that the two older women who reveal themselves as sea monsters at the end are basically outing themselves in solidarity. i love reading the grandma's line "some people will never accept him. but some will. and he seems to know how to find the good ones." in a queer light. i just think it's so wholesome. and a good lesson for parents of lgbtqiap+ kids.

UPDATE: since this movie came out pixar has released official art from a deleted scene of luca and alberto kissing before Luca gets on the train. so, confirmed, luca is gay. (Technically alberto is gay and luca is Bi but thats minor details and a more personal opinion:)
