  • After months of preparing, weeks of editing, and a few negotiations here and there, we've finally come to what may be my most ambitious video of 2024: A retrospective on probably the greatest video game compilation of all-time: Super Mario All-Stars on the Super Nintendo.

    3. Some additional Mario music was provided by @banjoguyollie
    4. Most SNES footage is captured from original Super Famicom/SNES hardware via HD Retrovision hooked to my RetroTINK 5X hooked to my portable capture card.
    5. I may be missing a few details, but they can be covered in #shorts overtime.

    The concept of compiling all the NES Mario games together into enhanced editions was actually awesome, and one of the first examples (I think?) of a gaming company recognizing the resellability potential of retro product.
    The second edition, which added Super Mario World, was the cherry on top.

    I bought a super nintendo and super mario all stars for like $120 at a pawn shop when me and my fiance got our first apartment together in our twenties. We didnt have cable, internet was newish and in our area still kind of clunky anyway so that was our entertainment for a lkng time. I bet she still has that tucked away somewhere unless she gave it to her niece or something. My first snes that i had as a kid survived a full blown, burned to the ground trailer fire. It went through the fire, being soaked in january and sitting in the remains of the trialer for a few days and when we were allowed to go back and sift through things i found it... smoke stained but otherwise intact. It didnt even erase my Zelda LttP save file. I will always remember that.

    Technically speaking, this game gives a lot of playtime value with collection but the final ALL STARS collection SMB, SMB 2, SMB3, THE LOST LEVELS, and the hidden arcade game in SMB 3 (sort of) in addition to SM WORLD. Now that's some serious old school value. I wonder if the day will when NINTENDO can give a ALL STARS DELUXE collection featuring every dang SMB game ever in existence?? 😂

    Super Mario All-Stars was one of the few games we had for the SNES, the others being Super Mario World, Star Fox, and Super Mario Kart. Our parents didn't buy us an N64 so this was all we had in terms of gaming consoles until the Gamecube's launch, where our parents got it and Super Smash Bros for Xmas. When we sold the SNES and its games to someone because we were clueless kids back then, I did miss out on playing it for real when I grew older. So I bought the rerelease on Wii despite it being a bare-bones rerelease as the Wii's Virtual Console only had the original NES releases of its games for sale, and played it on the Nintendo Switch Online service.

      When i was young, all I had for my SNES was this, Super Mario World, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Ms. Pac-Man, Mario's Time Machine, and Mario is Missing. I played quite a few others via rental, though.

I'm not saying that you're like copying him I think some of the editing is inspired by him but at the same time you got your own thing going as well even talking about your own experience playing the games. And that was cool that you got into detail about the other compilations out there. A lot of which I knew about mostly thanks to the internet but some of which I either didn't know about or just forgot about. So you were six in 1994. So was I. Anyways this was a lot of fun to see.

    the NES was out 7-8 years before the SNES. never understood why folk thought it needed to be backwards compatible when most folks still had their console. i understood why SEGA made the converter considering how poor the Master System sold, but this was dumb. I was in high school when the SNES was released. first console i bought with my own money. all i had for the longest was SMW then the mail away SMAS.

I was so happy, then I realized it was Mario all stars bundled with the snes that already had Mario world , i beat all the Mario games on my nes , I did played the original Mario 2 thanks to a famiclone cartridge though never beat it, I didn’t touch Mario all stars until I beat Mario world I was so hyped to play Mario world that I forgot I had the other game, later I played Mario all stars and I was pleasantly surprised of how new and fresh it felt

    In the end, I would regret my Sega Genesis because cross platform games were always better on SNES and Genesis relied too heavily on the Sonic games. The quality just wasn’t there in my opinion.

But rather than have the opening menu choose between Super Mario All-Stars and Super Mario World, Nintendo actually put Super Mario World in the All-Stars menu systems. That was fantastic.

    33:21 I get to brag that it didn't take me anywhere close to that long to beat all four of the games. As a kid in the '90s I played so much Mario and I also played a lot of Sonic as well as many other games and I was just really good at primarily the Mario games. I got better at the Sonic games when I got older. Although it turns out even though the very first game I ever played in my life was Super Mario world, the very first game I ever beat was Sonic the Hedgehog but yeah I beat all the Super Mario All-Stars games pretty quickly though. The lost levels of course is the one that I beat last However it is Super Mario Bros 2 that I beat first. Actually the order I beat them it's kind of weird. I first beat Super Mario Bros 2, then Super Mario Bros 3, then Super Mario Bros, then the lost levels.
    I know that's pretty weird considering the original Super Mario Bros is the easiest game. But yeah I beat all the games in a short time. That includes the lost levels although yes that one I definitely beat last.
    One thing that was really funny was I had beaten the lost levels multiple times and hadn't seen world 9, but Then when my brother was watching I guess was the first time I decided beat the whole game without taking any warps and we both were surprised to see world 9 because I didn't even know there was a world nine because I guess all the times I beat it before then I did use at least one warp zone.
    Also on a side note the menu where you select which game you want to play on Super Mario All Stars and you probably can already tell this and I'm sure most people can but I just didn't notice you mentioning it in the video is that they play a variation of the Super Mario Bros overworld theme on that menu

    • @GamingDelight
      @GamingDelight  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm sure it was the best they could do for the SNES/SFC at the time. Remember, the game sold for almost 10,000 yen in Japan, which is pretty steep for a Mario game. Adding extra chips for improved sound effects likely would've added at least another 1,000 yen to the price to cover the costs.

      @@mzaiteThey were audio files called samples that were stored in the cartridge rom. Nintendo just reused the audio driver and samples from SMW in Mario All Stars. They would later reuse the same audio driver again for Yoshi's Island, but in that one they created new sound effects and added much more new samples (there are still some SMW sfx though).

      @dnocturn84 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@mzaite But the SNES and NES had totally different audio chips. Just re-using the old NES audio files on the SNES chip doesn't work at all. It would have been neccessary to convert the old NES music to the SNES with pretty hardcore precision regarding the sound result. It was pretty difficult to replicate NES sounds on the SNES in general. Like trying to make exact Sega Genesis sounds on the SNES. It was technically even simpler to replicate NES music on the Genesis, as sound chip architecture was somewhat similar.
      Check out the Ninja Gaiden compilation on the SNES and experience, how ugly this sounds, when compared to the original.

      NSO is your only chance for the Switch unless Nintendo decides to make pixel-enhanced versions of the original 2D games.

    Are we talking about supermario allstars or are we talking about the whole history of nintendo and those supermario games,you might could,ve call it ‘nintendo moments in 1993’ because it wouldn’t have make any difference at all,
    But aside from that,
    Well yeah i was blown away as a kid once i saw supermario allstars, i was mind blown away by it’s graphics and sounds but as an addult, i realize that something was not right as nintendo did had swapped things around in certain cases, for instance those 16bit versions don’t have a high replay because of it’s save feature, they also do lack that sheer from those 8bit versions etc,,, so albeit not bad but they just don’t feel original anymore compared to those nes versions of it.

    I am fine with game re-releases especially for newer systems, but if you are basically not going to add anything new to it, then I think its a total insult for them to try and charge you the amount of money as a new release, like Nintendo and a few other companies do all the time, because a lot of games that were on the Wii U were re-released on the Switch, and most of them were basically just direct ports where they barely added anything to it, yet they wanted to charge you around $70 plus tax for them, when you had already bought the Wii U games at around $60 and the games are basically the same, and then on top of that you have to buy the new Amiibo figurines, that they usually also release alongside the new ports, because they want to lock some content behind those figurines, and a lot of people don't see anything wrong with those practices, and it really sucks when the original games on the Wii U have stopped being officially supported by Nintendo, so you have to use 3rd party services like Pretendo just to get the games feeling like what you had paid for, and Nintendo and other companies will keep doing this over and over again, because people keep throwing money at them and they know they can get away with it.
    I wish more remasters or re-releases would be like the Metroid Prime Trilogy which had released for about $40, which is extremely reasonable since its 3 games in 1 and most Nintendo Switch games just stick to the $70 price tag.

      First-party Switch games go for as high as $60 (minus DLC), not $70 (except for massive games like Tears of the Kingdom).
      Furthermore, the reason most Wii U rereleases on the Switch went for $60 (not $70) was because they had all the DLC (which had to be purchased separately for the Wii U versions) right out of the box.

    • @Chrisezo

      @@GamingDelight That might be in your country, but in my country we get charged import fees so they do become around $70 plus taxes, and I still think that for whoever had bought the Wii U games it was still a bad deal for us, since like I mentioned after Nintendo disabled the eShop and turned off many of its online servers for the Wii U, we got basically screwed for supporting Nintendo and buying the games, as we are forced to either now use Pretendo to continue playing the games that we purchased how they were intended to be played, or to buy the Switch port which we don't know for how long those will last, as the Switch 2 is coming soon and Nintendo seems to be eliminating support for prior systems too quickly now, unlike how they used to support consoles for a long time in the 2000s.

    Have to disagree with you about the Mega Man: Wily Wars part. This compilation isn't on the same level as Super Mario Allstars. It's not as impressive regarding the graphics and the new sound also isn't as good (I guess sound might be dependent on individual taste though).
    There are also many issues with its gameplay (limited shots per frame, different feel of controls + lag, larger characters and enemy sprites even though screen resulution is identical - but MM hitbox is smaller, addition of invincibility frames on enemies that weren't in the original - especially nasty on some robot masters, some special weapons cause Mega Man to not being able to move for a second when fired, etc.). Being able to save and the additional unlockable extra levels plus being able to use a mix of various special weapons from different games is a cool thing.
    I would have wished so much for it to be as good as the Mario Allstars treatment. But it's still a lot better than the Ninja Gaiden Trilogy - this one totally failed.
