A correction about Super Mario Bros. story: No. You aren't killing Toads when you break bricks. The manual states that "if you come across mushrooms that have been turned into bricks or made invisible, they will reward you by giving you a power boost." This means that bricks that are broken are not Toads. And only bricks that have power-ups in them are Toads.
That#s sad, I hate Toad so much with so much passion that I would love to stab him with a knive, and the thought of killing him in this game was satisfying ugh
Imagine your life without Mario, or Sonic, or Zelda, or pizza. Unthinkable. I will never forget my cousin getting Super Mario Bros. 3 for his birthday, we completely skipped the cake. We would sneak down in the middle of the night just to play it, epic.
I know how you feel, it took us a month to realize that duck hunt was in the box when we got our NES. Hey what's this gun thingy for? Sure enough we did try using it shoot at goombas.....
Two fun facts about SMB3: The chain chomps can actually come lose out of their chains if you stay on the same screen for too long. I think it takes like 50 lunges or something for them to come lose. And in multiplayer, if you enter a spot on the world map already occupied by the other player, you start a Mario Bros. minigame.
32:17 You fight Wart inside the Yume Kojo a.k.a. The Dream Factory. Mario and co. wishes to defeat Wart and since they’re “pure of heart”, the factory provides them with his weakness.
This was a genuinely charming and entertaining look back at some of the best video games ever made. I will say I think the originals are the definitives, but it’s all just a matter of opinion.
Really solid retrospective. Personally, Super Mario Bros. 3 will always reign supreme but that is a heavily biased opinion. Nostalgia is powerful. Though Super Mario World is indeed the technically superior game. I just prefer the aesthetics of 3 and as cool as Yoshi is in World, Yoshi's Island solidified how Yoshi should control forever, with that being my all-time favorite 2D platformer (SNES version specifically).
I played Mario World years before Mario 3. And I still like Mario 3 more. I do like World for sure, but Mario 3 has more variety, better music, and I prefer the bosses in 3 too. It's not always "nostalgia."
I watched the whole video, lol. I just beat the Lost Levels Alls Stars version with the help of the rewind feature on Nintendo Switch Online. It actually helped make the game more enjoyable and less punishing for me.
What a delightful retrospective, not opinions I haven’t heard before, but I like the way you presented them, and a very nicely edited video Plus Lost Levels slander always puts me at ease Edit: almost forgot that Brave Little Toaster reference
Someone else already mentioned the "Toads aren't really being killed" thing, but I wanted to reiterate that that is correct. Bowser turned the Toads into elements that already existed within the environment, and nobody ends up dead. The reason the Toads tell you Peach is in another castle is because genuinely nobody knows which castle Peach is being held in. That's also why there are fake Bowsers in each castle. It's supposed to trick Mario (and the player) into thinking it's the real Bowser. The Mushroom Retainers are the Toads that are specifically being held in the castles. They're presumably Toads that are important to Peach. They might be her advisors or something. I'd imagine they were too important to be transformed into bricks, so they were captured instead. The "Mushroom People" is what the rest of the Toads are called in the manual. Another correction is that Luigi didn't wear green and white in the original Arcade release of Mario Bros. That was a color palette change made for the NES release. The original version has Luigi wear Green and brown.
As a huge fan of basically every Mario game I can say that they are all really good games (even the lost levels but I played that on the Nintendo Switch online with the rewind thing so that's probably why.) Although I don't have any nostalgia for these games yet because I grew up with New Super Mario Bros DS I played them for the first time almost a year ago.
This was a good video. I had beaten all these games as a kid in the early 90s, including Lost Levels on the All Stars Version. I didn't hate the All Stars Version of Lost Levels, but it's not that good as a stand alone game. I consider Yoshi's Island to be Super Mario Bros 5. A lot of people disagree, but like, the other games in the Yoshi series aren't that good while Yoshi's Island was Miyamoto and this team going hard as their last hurrah for 2D.
I got pretty good at dodging the bloopers, but those lone hammer bros that you can't get under? Yeah, I hate those just as much as you.. I find the best thing to do Is get in close, about a tile's distance. Their hammers will arc over you, and you can wait for a gap.
I love the real Mario 2(lost levels) the extra challenge was ace and I disagree about the original Smb1/2 controls as I think they are near perfect from the get go and are precise which you can see in the speed runs.
I think im the only person on earth who actually enjoys the lost levels level design(with the switch’s rewind features of course, and also not the maze levels those suck)
I like Mario bros 3, but I get a bit annoyed when people say is the best Mario game. It's the best in the original NES trilogy, but I don't see it as the best Mario game of all time. (Still a good game, tho) I like Mario world mainly because of the music. I never grew up playing it, but it somehow sounds nostalgic to me

Mario 2: A dream inside of a dream? Why? He was dreaming of a starcase, found a door, opened it and freed the people, but all this is the same dream. So where does this Inception come from?
I’m more of a classic Sonic guy than classic Mario but I love Mario 3 and World. Easily the best classic Mario games. World is better than 3 because Yoshi. That’s it. I love Yoshi(I never abandon him for an extra jump you animals!) Those are awesome games. Mario 1 and 2 kinda suck but those games are a lot older and like the first of their kind or whatever idk so it’s excusable.

@@FarnzworthIII I may be 5 months late, but the point of sonic games (at least the good ones) is to go as fast as possible and avoiding obstacles, even using them to your advantage; sonic adventure 2 built on this idea by creating the ranking system which gives you a score depending on how well you performed in the level, it may involve some trial and error at first but you will reach a point in which it is easy to memorize obstacles and do incredible skips using the level design to your advantage to complete them even faster.
