The Nintendo 64 has such a strong nostalgic hold on me more than any other console. Something about it is so special to me... the art style in ads, the music, the couch co-op... It's just so special still to this day.
Getting my n64 on Christmas in 96 is probably my fondest childhood memory. I got killer instinct gold. That year I also learned how to hook a console up on my own.

As a 90s kid who grew up in the transition from 2D-3D was a Sega Genesis kid, never had a Saturn or PlayStation but got a 64 around 97-98. This is so cool to see the backstory. This type of stuff should be preserved it’s insane that these companies themselves don’t produce full documentary and archives on these moments in gaming. The beginning of the 80s to 90 is important but 94-98 as the 3D revolution is so pivotal to gaming we still have now. We might have VR/AR now but this change almost 30 years on still is the dominant method in which we expect all games to play outside of 2D games built for nostalgia.

Yeah growing up, being a Nintendo guy then was somewhat difficult at times when seeing games like; Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, Crash Bandicoot, GTA and loads of interesting titles not comong to Nintendo, but I agree that the N64 still had in the end of the day the most re-play valued games and best multiplayer games indeed.

My story with the N64 is quite unique. It was the console I dreamed of having as a child but couldn't due to its high cost. At that time, TV commercials and magazines made you desire it with all your heart. For many of us, it remains ingrained in our emotional memory as the console with the best graphics imaginable. I had to wait 25 years to finally experience the N64 library during the COVID pandemic, on my laptop with an emulator, CRT filters simulating the old tube TV image, and a USB N64 controller - the closest to the original experience I could achieve. I can say the wait was completely worth it. Additionally, I didn't own consoles or play video games after the 8 and 16-bit generations, so even in 2020, the graphics dazzled me as if I were that child from 1996. Paradoxically, despite not having the original system, it has become my all-time favorite console; I hold a special affection for it. I always say it's not "despite" but "thanks to" the hardware limitations and cartridge format that we have such a unique and wonderful aesthetic - with low-poly graphics, smoothed low-res textures, blurriness, fog, pre-rendered images, mixed 2D and 3D elements - everything we love about that graphical style that has become distinctive. The N64 controller was revolutionary and ahead of its time, and to this day, I find it absolutely brilliant. I prefer it over any modern redesign or reinterpretation (I still vividly remember the moment I first held it at a schoolmate's house back in the 90s; it blew my mind). N64 has become a cult object and almost a fetish for me; I've become a huge fan of everything related to the console. Thanks for the video! Regards!
Waking up on a Saturday at my moms house at like 7am and having a bowl of Chex and playing Zelda and Rayman 2 are easily some of my best and earliest memories
Sega genesis was my first console. 64 was my second, I remember opening this thing on Christmas morning. This console and some of the games like 007, Mario 64, ocarina of time, super smasg bros will forever be a fond memory of my childhood.

Dont take me too seriously. That was just meant to be a tongue-in-cheek nod title. Its a good video overall and the background state of the company and industry leading up that console generation does add some context what it was like in those time for people that didnt live it which id probably a lot of your audience. That was one of the most fascinating console generations to watch happen.

@IIWR I was managing a Babbages at the time of the N64 launch we stacked & removed those systems off the display floor three or four different times that day then finally got the okay to leave them out. Fun memories of a chaotic system launch 😅

In a weird and unexpected turn of events my parents asked me what I wanted for Christmas in 96', I was torn because most of my buddies told me to get a Playstation, but I chose the 64, still one of the best decisions of my life!
In 1998 I got a Playstation for my 12th birthday. Originally I asked my mom for an N64 but Eloctronic Boutique was sold out and the guy swore up/down to my mom that a Playstation was a much better pick anyways -- so that's what she got lol. I wasn't really mad because in the end I loved my Playstation _but_ I really wanted to play Goldeneye and Mario 64 lol.
Oh yeah either way, PlayStation or N64 you had a good console but for different reasons. The only kids not so happy were the ones who got a jaguar or a 3DO 😂
Most excellent video. This system brought me my favorite game of all time. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I called in to work 3 days(Vacation days muahah) just to play it. I love and still love my N64. Always will. Though the Nintendo Gamecube will be my favorite Nintendo system ever made and my favorite console of all time. Both N64 and Gamecube keep me Nintendo happy even now I'm in my late 40's. Thanks again for a great video.

I got the Nintendo 64 on launch day in North America going to every place that sold electronics. Even though I played the heck out of the system and the games I bought for it, it became apparent to me that I had a love-hate relationship it this version of Nintendo’s system.
@@IndustrialIndustriesWorldRadio I had a friend who’s parents would get him pretty much whatever he wanted, the system seemed pretty sophisticated at the time. obviously it was overpriced though and perhaps not the easiest thing to develop for and quickly got left behind.
I was 12/13 years old at the time the Ultra 64 was announced, I recall all these things happening but had forgotten a lot of it. This was a good recap of how exciting it was at the time. The N64 DD was always a disappointment that we never really got it. I sold my Playstation after I got an N64, but then later bought another Playstation when they introduced the dual shock controller and Gran Turismo. The PS1 was the better system overall, even though the N64 had some good games I feel the quality in games dropped a lot compared to the Super Nintendo. I'm still nostalgic about all these vintage consoles, but I feel like the N64 games have dated rather badly for the most part.
I would occasionally find random issues at my local library. Somehow I did get mailed one of those pre-release tapes though! I think maybe because my dad registered our Super Nintendo with our address on it. Really cool 😎

I think nintendo can take it a step further by releasing the n64 in the form of its mini consoles, but include everything they wanted, too. The 64dd, the unreleased content for the classic games we've come to know and love. It'd be pretty cool.

The only error I can find is in this otherwise outstanding video: when he says N64 controllers are now compatible with Nintendo switch. That is certainly not the case. You need a special N64 styled new controller

I have the ultra 64 demo cart from the show. It's got the temp mario64 and other games. One of my best pieces in my collection. Kirby was fun on the cart and Mario kart was blah till they fixed it up. Nice vid

Still have my childhood 64, that thing is the cockroach of game systems. Almost every system I've owned since has needed to be repaired at least once, but that thing just goes. If Nintendo ever made a new 64 I'd buy it day one

I remember getting frustrated that Nintendo had been pushing back the release date. I was out of highschool, working and eager to play. I went to live abroad in South America for a number of years for business and first saw the N64 down there at a friends house in 1997 and played Mario 64. I was later in Santiago in the middle of town and saw an N64 display showing Turok and I was blown away by the graphics. What irritated me, after the N64 release, is that Killer Instinct was never released on the N64. Not the version in the arcade. If you play the arcade version, I distinctly remember the arcade saying something along the lines of "soon for release on the Ultra 64".
Oh yeah, I remember getting turok for my birthday and loved the game. Not just for the gameplay but the music of that game is great! I was always confused by that voice announcing “coming soon to Nintendo Ultra 64”. My mom worked at a bowling alley in the 90’s and I always hung out in the arcade area where both the cruisin usa and killer instinct arcades were there. I was 9 at the time and didn’t have a Nintendo power subscription so I had no idea what was going on about the N64 until it actually came out and I saw a demo kiosk at a Target store. Still even after its release I still thought a Nintendo Ultra 64 was out which was better than the regular Nintendo 64. Man was I wrong! Making this documentary solved and pieced together so many mysteries and questions I had growing up!
I remember PSX game being about 150-200 of my local currency and the N64 ("Doom 64", to be precise) was 375. So,yeah: they've beat counterfeiting i guess?

The 64DD is a good example of what would have happened to the Nintendo PlayStation. It would have never been a thing but a gimmick Nintendo would have canceled or treated badly anyway and there would be no PlayStation today.
I love these videogame history videos, always interesting. Wonder what things would have been like if PlayStation didn't take so many developers away from Nintendo. Seeing final Fantasy and others on N64 would have reshaped the world in a way. And I believe the first part adds needed context to how the N64 came to be
Thank you so much as to what I was trying to do with the first 7 or 8 minutes of this. When you tell a story, even if it’s not exactly the subject, it’s always good to lay a foundation to give the subject (nintendo 64) the weight it deserves. Yeah those RPG’s PlayStation won over killed the N64’s longevity. The few Zelda titles kept it alive into 98 and 99 but man. I feel it’s a system that never got to realize and harness its final form of power.
At this point I think Nintendo will keep releasing the switch with just upgraded cards. I think the end of new consoles may be coming near. I hope not but seeing that the switch has now been out for 7 years with nothing new in sight, who knows!
@IndustrialIndustriesWorldRadio I really hope they make like a "super switch" that can play regular switch cards (since the switch library is legendary) but will also Build on the power to potential around 16gb of ram (steam deck ish levels of power but well optimized)

Reading about these games years before they were released was brutal. It seemed like an eternity before Turok and Goldeneye came out.

As much as I loved the background of Nintendo it felt like padding for the video, no offense to him though he did awesome it was just unnecessary

Dont take me too seriously. That was just meant to be a tongue-in-cheek nod title. Its a good video overall and the background state of the company and industry leading up that console generation does add some context what it was like in those time for people that didnt live it which id probably a lot of your audience. That was one of the most fascinating console generations to watch happen.
I also forgot that toy was called the ultrahand. Any bets the tear of the kingdom ability was and intentional nod to that?

@IIWR I was managing a Babbages at the time of the N64 launch we stacked & removed those systems off the display floor three or four different times that day then finally got the okay to leave them out. Fun memories of a chaotic system launch 😅

In a weird and unexpected turn of events my parents asked me what I wanted for Christmas in 96', I was torn because most of my buddies told me to get a Playstation, but I chose the 64, still one of the best decisions of my life!

In 1998 I got a Playstation for my 12th birthday. Originally I asked my mom for an N64 but Eloctronic Boutique was sold out and the guy swore up/down to my mom that a Playstation was a much better pick anyways -- so that's what she got lol. I wasn't really mad because in the end I loved my Playstation _but_ I really wanted to play Goldeneye and Mario 64 lol.
Oh yeah either way, PlayStation or N64 you had a good console but for different reasons. The only kids not so happy were the ones who got a jaguar or a 3DO 😂

Most excellent video. This system brought me my favorite game of all time. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I called in to work 3 days(Vacation days muahah) just to play it. I love and still love my N64. Always will. Though the Nintendo Gamecube will be my favorite Nintendo system ever made and my favorite console of all time. Both N64 and Gamecube keep me Nintendo happy even now I'm in my late 40's. Thanks again for a great video.

There was a total of 22 N64 Virtual Console games if you count the Japan Exclusive Custom Robo V2.
I got the Nintendo 64 on launch day in North America going to every place that sold electronics. Even though I played the heck out of the system and the games I bought for it, it became apparent to me that I had a love-hate relationship it this version of Nintendo’s system.
I can totally understand. I felt the same way when I’d see games like resident evil on PlayStation and we’d get “Glover” 😂

@@IndustrialIndustriesWorldRadio I had a friend who’s parents would get him pretty much whatever he wanted, the system seemed pretty sophisticated at the time. obviously it was overpriced though and perhaps not the easiest thing to develop for and quickly got left behind.

I was 12/13 years old at the time the Ultra 64 was announced, I recall all these things happening but had forgotten a lot of it. This was a good recap of how exciting it was at the time. The N64 DD was always a disappointment that we never really got it. I sold my Playstation after I got an N64, but then later bought another Playstation when they introduced the dual shock controller and Gran Turismo. The PS1 was the better system overall, even though the N64 had some good games I feel the quality in games dropped a lot compared to the Super Nintendo. I'm still nostalgic about all these vintage consoles, but I feel like the N64 games have dated rather badly for the most part.

I subscribed to Nintendo Power from issues 17 to 100. I still have my DKC and N64 VHS tapes! Pretty neat advertising for the time.
I would occasionally find random issues at my local library. Somehow I did get mailed one of those pre-release tapes though! I think maybe because my dad registered our Super Nintendo with our address on it. Really cool 😎

I think nintendo can take it a step further by releasing the n64 in the form of its mini consoles, but include everything they wanted, too. The 64dd, the unreleased content for the classic games we've come to know and love. It'd be pretty cool.

64DD had some sort of VIVO capabilities it looks like (basically inputting a 2nd video and audio source, and then saving it to disk)
The only error I can find is in this otherwise outstanding video: when he says N64 controllers are now compatible with Nintendo switch. That is certainly not the case. You need a special N64 styled new controller
Thanks man. But when I had did that I did mean that there were n64 controllers compatible with the switch. Watching it back now I can easily see why people would think I meant old 64 controllers were compatible. Weird and unfortunate wording.
I have the ultra 64 demo cart from the show. It's got the temp mario64 and other games. One of my best pieces in my collection. Kirby was fun on the cart and Mario kart was blah till they fixed it up. Nice vid

Still have my childhood 64, that thing is the cockroach of game systems. Almost every system I've owned since has needed to be repaired at least once, but that thing just goes. If Nintendo ever made a new 64 I'd buy it day one

I remember getting frustrated that Nintendo had been pushing back the release date. I was out of highschool, working and eager to play.
I went to live abroad in South America for a number of years for business and first saw the N64 down there at a friends house in 1997 and played Mario 64. I was later in Santiago in the middle of town and saw an N64 display showing Turok and I was blown away by the graphics.
What irritated me, after the N64 release, is that Killer Instinct was never released on the N64. Not the version in the arcade. If you play the arcade version, I distinctly remember the arcade saying something along the lines of "soon for release on the Ultra 64".
Oh yeah, I remember getting turok for my birthday and loved the game. Not just for the gameplay but the music of that game is great!
I was always confused by that voice announcing “coming soon to Nintendo Ultra 64”. My mom worked at a bowling alley in the 90’s and I always hung out in the arcade area where both the cruisin usa and killer instinct arcades were there.
I was 9 at the time and didn’t have a Nintendo power subscription so I had no idea what was going on about the N64 until it actually came out and I saw a demo kiosk at a Target store.
Still even after its release I still thought a Nintendo Ultra 64 was out which was better than the regular Nintendo 64. Man was I wrong!
Making this documentary solved and pieced together so many mysteries and questions I had growing up!

Nintendo created their worst enemy with the n64 being cartridge based . I feel they could have destroyed Sony had they gone the cd route.
They had such an iron fist against piracy it was ridiculous. And yeah they really did screw up big time then, the 64DD was cool but ultimately a waste of time in my opinion

The 64DD is a good example of what would have happened to the Nintendo PlayStation.
It would have never been a thing but a gimmick Nintendo would have canceled or treated badly anyway and there would be no PlayStation today.

I love these videogame history videos, always interesting. Wonder what things would have been like if PlayStation didn't take so many developers away from Nintendo. Seeing final Fantasy and others on N64 would have reshaped the world in a way. And I believe the first part adds needed context to how the N64 came to be
Thank you so much as to what I was trying to do with the first 7 or 8 minutes of this. When you tell a story, even if it’s not exactly the subject, it’s always good to lay a foundation to give the subject (nintendo 64) the weight it deserves. Yeah those RPG’s PlayStation won over killed the N64’s longevity. The few Zelda titles kept it alive into 98 and 99 but man. I feel it’s a system that never got to realize and harness its final form of power.

At this point I think Nintendo will keep releasing the switch with just upgraded cards. I think the end of new consoles may be coming near. I hope not but seeing that the switch has now been out for 7 years with nothing new in sight, who knows!

Nintendo 64 was more powerful then the PS1 but didn’t get the best games all went to PS1 instead of Nintendo 64 the games is what makes the consoles very good if no games the console is boring exclusive games aren’t the best games that’s why I hated the Neo geo it only had SNK games to why I hate Atari VCS only Atari games no third party games
