THE REAL DIFFERENCE BETWEEN KOBE AND MICHAEL JORDAN | TheBlackRanger X TELLS THE TRUTH!

  • In this video I will be highlighting the differences between the 2 of the greatest shooting guards to walk the planet. Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. Both played in the 1990s and 2000s and dominated their opponents with a style and grace that is so rare in sports that they get brought up in legacy talk. In today's video we will take a different approach and not compare bare stats but more of the overall stature of each player at their best and their differences between one another. This video will outline the clear distinction between Kobe and MJ so stay tuned for another Video essay! Also thanks to the loyal subscribers for joining for another video! Godbless
P.S. In this video I tried to stick to facts and not compare things like competitive drive or personalities and things that we cannot measure at all. Also Jordan's stats speak for themselves as why I did not include them, I believe that everyone knows them by now from all these debate shows lol.

You are the first TH-camr to say pretty much everything I have ever said regarding the Kobe and MJ comparison. The irony is you even added slightly more, but it shows that you did your research because only someone who took the time to meticulously study each of their careers, player interviews, interviews between rival coaches, past teammates and rivals does one come to the conclusions that you came to. So I salute you for your research and for the analytical and comprehension skills it also takes to come to the conclusions you came to. Kobe Bryant is my favorite player of all-time along with Magic Johnson and I came to the same conclusions that you did. Kobe is the most skilled basketball player in NBA History, his greatness weakness has always been himself, he never quite learned the art of when to takeover and when to play within the offense quite like MJ did. Kobe's IQ is actually every bit as good as MJ, it is his self-control that is weaker.

You are absolutely right except for the part where you say Kobe is most skilled player ever in NBA! He's wasn't as skilled as Kyrie or Steph and definitely not as skilled as MJ! My cousin, who is a Kobe fan always said that Kobe was the hardest worker ever in the NBA. He said that Phil Jackson said so. I don't doubt that, but Jordan's career was practically over when Phil started coaching Kobe. Kobe was eternally an MJ chaser, so quite naturally he was trying to do "more" to outshine MJ, he came into the league studying Jordan's every move from early on. He was mimicking Jordan down to every MJ twitch! So more than anything he based his whole career off of being better than MJ! He didn't fail miserably, but he failed. Kobe has nothing to be ashamed of, he is great. But people get caught up in some of these things and automatically want to put Kobe on the pedestal with Mike! Whole body of work, skillset, work ethic, leader, talent, stats, says Jordan is better! Kobe was playing against the history of MJ! Mike couldn't go back and "pad the books" to make himself look better, Kobe was forever chasing those things! So please stop with the back handed compliments of Kobe was better in this way or that way. Like LeBron said the Jumpman logo should be the NBA logo!

As basketball players, Michael Jordan was better than Kobe Bryant in almost every statistical category. He has a higher regular season and post season PPG, he has more assists per game, he has more rebounds per game, he has more blocks per game, he has more steals per game, he has less turn overs per game, he has a higher field goal percentage and a higher PER. They are basically tied in free throw percentage and we can give Kobe a slight edge on 3 point shooting. That's about it. This isn't even close.
When it comes to who was more gifted physically & athletically, this isn't close either. Michael Jordan had better foot speed in the open court, he had a quicker first step off the dribble, he was bigger & stronger, he had a better verticle leap & hang time and he had much larger hands which gave him advantages. Kobe ties him in 2 areas. His height and his inside quickness. Once again, this isn't even close.
As for their individual skills, this is closer but let's take a look at it...
    Michael Jordan
    1. Better at driving the lane and getting to the rim.
    2. Better finisher at the rim.
    3. Better in the post.
    3. Better in transition.
    4. Better shot selection.
    5. Better lock down defender.
    Kobe Bryant
    1. Better streak shooter from long distance.
    2. Better ball handler.
    3. Better footwork but that's in question because Kobe's game was more on the perimeter whereas MJ had to drive past entire defenses
They are about tied with creativity but you have to remember that Kobe got most of his from MJ and not the other way around. Even in an area where people want to give Kobe the edge, Michael Jordan was still the more skilled player overall.
Intangibles? Michael Jordan had a better basketball IQ, he was more workable with his coaches, less selfish with his teammates and was the more clutch player. They are tied when it comes to their competitive drive and Kobe has a slight edge in work ethic. To sum it up, MJ also had better intangibles.
    It's MJ all day.

Another video delivered with eloquence and excellence. I missed out on Jordan. I grew up with Kobe as odd as that may sound. I watched his game and he himself personally develop, grow and mature. Kobe's arrogance and standoffishness brought him much hate. It was fun watching him progress as a player but most importantly as a man. I think Kobe might be slightly more skilled than Jordan regarding handles and his arsenal of moves but only because the game was much more simpler back in Jordan's era; whereas, the game had evolved into a flashier style of play during Kobe's reign of terror.

I agree with your assessment in evaluating both MJ & Mamba.
I've said the same thing for years: MJ in the air and paint - but Mamba from 3 and in 1 on 1.
Jordan's hardier frame, larger hands, and vertical leaping ability give him an edge in certain situations: when flying into folks (or over) and in the paint.
Kobe seemed to have a slightly better 'touch' and finesse, which made him a slightly better shooter (despite having smaller hands and the index finger injury).
I agree, Kobe took more contested shots so his % might throw this idea off.. but Kobe naturally had more of an arc on his shot, as where MJ's arc was more flat at times. MJ's elevation had something to do with his arc trajectory being more flat but Kobe still had the better 'rainbow'.
In one on one, if we're calling fouls, Kobe all day! No fouls being called, Jordan might be able to muscle a win.
Game on the line, I'm taking Kobe to make last shot (unless its in the paint).

Great breakdown, and I agree. MJ over Kobie. No doubt. MJ had quicker handles, which is why he could get to an open spot and get off an uncontested shot while Kobe was a little slower and had to shoot contested shots, hence all the pump fakes, which led the lower shooting percentage. MJ better post up player, better defender, better leader, and had a mid-range game that Kobe did not have. Kobe was better from 3. Not sure about percentage. Jordan could be the No 1 while Kobe needed another superstar and it was usually Horry or Fisher that hit the big shots for the Lakers. This shouldn't be much of a discussion. Kobe: volume scorer.

Kobe's my guy but the 2004 finals cost him. If he had beaten Boston in 2008 I think the debate is worth discussing because that would've meant MVP, Championship, Finals MVP and Gold Medal in the same season. Given that Kobe wins championships in 2009 and 2010, he would've completed a three-peat without Shaq. It would also mark the only time a team would complete two separate three-peat championship runs in a ten year span, the other only being the Bulls. But that is IF he had beaten Boston twice.

That separate 3 peat could have really allowed a conversation to get going about his ability to make 8 finals/10 years and win 2 3peats which would be super-impressive! Shame that the Lakers acquired Pau so late during that season, lost alot of Chemistry building time but it is what it is. Good take

This is one of the best videos I've seen comparing Kobe and MJ, no mentions of MVPs and individual accomplishments, pure intangibles. I didnt know Phil Jackson said Kobe was the better trainer, but when Jordan and Kobe were taken out the game for not passing, Jordan would come back in the game as a facilitator and picking his shots, where Kobe just wanted back in the game (MAMBA). Its really tough to choose between the 2, but Kobe is who i would prefer because if takes little for him to get hot...and if he does, he is able to take over the game single handedly (Jordan is able to do this too but Kobe has shown his offensive skill set to be superior to all others).
BTW, its obvious they're both MK ultra Super Athletes with Kobe being conditioned and programmed to be the literal next MJ. Tell me how 1 player during a professional basketball game scores 81 points on his 666th game scoring 66.6% of the teams points? Those who know the truth will understand.

    • @saberplaytop
      @saberplaytop 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

@@dontemcl The game is not all about numbers. It is widely accepted Kobe is a better range shooter than Jordan.
A player's overall field goal percentage is dependent on not how good of a shooter they are, but more of what attempts they took from which part of the floor.
      MJ shot 51% from 2, 33% from 3, had an overall FG% of 50%.
      Kobe shot 48% from 2, 33% from 3, had an overall FG% of 45%
If you were to remove the 3 point shot entirely from this equation and only looked at attempts from 2, the difference between Kobe and MJ would be negligible from pure efficiency standpoint.
There is a reason why Kobe and MJ's TSS% and EFG% are almost completely identical, as well. So no, MJ was not a better shooter than Kobe.
But those are just the numbers, and numbers dont tell the whole story.
Kobe was definitely a better shooter, but his percentage was only mediocre because of his shot selection. He took long 3's, contested 3's, shots at the end of the buzzer. But he was an elite shooter. If you were a coach who thought you could leave Kobe open because he only shot 33% from 3, you'd be fired within seconds. If you go and watch film between MJ and Kobe, Kobe made shots from 3 point range that MJ could only dream of.
There are many players in the NBA with better 3 point percentages than Kobe, but you would rather leave them open than Kobe. This is why LeBron James, despite having a higher 3 point percentages, Finals teams have successfully gameplanned against LeBron by leaving him open on the perimeter, sagging off, and watch as LeBron struggled to hit open jumpers. Play zone against Kobe, he will torch you efficiently. This all goes to show that that flat percentage never tells the whole story.
Furthermore Kobe came into the league with a developed jumper. MJ did not. For the first half of MJ's career he was a poor shooter and has multiple seasons shooting well below 30% from 3 point range. Kobe never had that problem. MJ's overall 3 point percentage was boosted up in the years where the 3 point line was moved in and so MJ's 3 point percentage skyrocketed.

But between Lebron and Kobe I can understand why many think Lebron was better, even as a Kobe fan, cause the difference isn't that big, it's in the intangibles where Kobe has the edge. But to say Lebron is better Jordan, is something that would always hurt Lebron more than help him, cause that's just reaching too far come on. It's like people don't realise what 6-0 means. I think Kobe was more athletically gifted, but Michael was more skilled. Michael was able to adjust better when plan A is not working out. I agree 1000% with Chauncey Billups when he said Kobe's ego is his problem. I also believe that shows that although players coming straight from high school can have an impact in the league, they still lose a ton of fundamentals by not playing college ball.

I think Kobe is a more decorated/deadly scorer when HOT or "in the zone" compared to MJ who's more consistent, and that's according to Phil Jackson, their coach. But consistency is what made MJ the GOAT undoubtedly. I've watched both of them play enough to where I can say Kobe is in that area of greatness, just a shade below MJ. They both played in different eras and both dominated their individual decades. Michael in 90s and Kobe in the 2000s. Both had different rules to go by. MJ was a bit stronger and could bully his way to the rim and shoot from the perimeter whereas Kobe had more foul rules to abide by and can slither his way or create a shot from virtually anywhere. Simply, they both dominated their individual circumstances to get to the mountain top in their eras. To sum it up, MJ/Kobe should get props for having the game "mastered" meaning EVERY aspect of it: mentality, talent, commitment, team usage, and scoring. KD and D-Wade have said it as well. They both had a killer mentality. MJ has said that Kobe is the ONLY ONE who has done the work to deserve the comparison. If you ask me who's better, it's MJ no question. But Kobe is not far from it. Injuries, reputation mistakes, and not trusting his teammates earlier enough kept Kobe from matching Jordan in rings or MVPs (I think nowadays it's more based on popularity). Kobe def got robbed of 3 or 4 in his career. Skillset they're almost identical with Kobe being a better range shooter. Kobe's work ethic was ridiculous. Also, if Kobe had gotten CP3 in 2011, he would have six rings easy. But both are the greatest shooting guards and killers in the game we have ever seen. No one will duplicate them.

I think they are on the same level because MJ himself said only one player can beat him and that’s Kobe. I think once you reach hall of fame stats you can’t compare them because they are so similar. What I see is not a transition of MJ to Kobe I see more of certain type of play style continue I think instead of comparing them we should just admire them it’ll be more enjoyable watching their highlights again

Only differences between Jordan and Kobe is that MJ could palm the ball and had a higher vert. Other than that Kobe could do everything Jordan could plus more. It can be said that Kobe had the better shooting touch, footwork in the post and creativity when attacking the rim. A 34 year old Kobe was still pulling of baseline windmill dunks, Jordan could barely dunk with two hands at that age.

Bill played for what were the modern day Warriors of that era in the Boston Celtics.
Bill was good but he was no Wilt Chamberlain. Wilt destroyed Bill in the match ups (usually).

Nice vid bro. I'm a huge Kobe fan and it's still hard for me to put him ahead of Jordan but the size of Jordan's hands kept him from being a great shooter from range. Kobe is better based on his better long range ability

Holy heck man. That was an unbelievably great comparison. I am the same age as Kobe, grew up in the Philly suburbs and played against him*(*sat on the bench)
Kobe is amazing but he is not Jordan.

While a well done video, I believe it's way closer than you think. The Lakers organization wasted the three best years of Kobe's prime, he gets one star and Phil at the tail end of it and immediately goes to 3 straight finals. But that's not my point, in those years the west was at its peak in competition. *ONLY 50 WIN TEAMS ALLOWED* if you wanna participate in these playoffs. The road to his 5th ring in 2010 might be the hardest road any Great had to go through. Every round he was going through a 50 win team only to face another 50 win team that had championship pedigree in Boston, who was also one of the best defensive teams ALL TIME. All this while he had a TORN LIGAMENT in his shooting hand that made him take more LEFT HANDED shots, not even counting his knee and shoulder issues. add to the fact that it was an iconic grudge match between the LAKERS and CELTICS. Screams GOAT to me, at the very least eye to eye, because that's serious pain tolerance and psychotic focus.

Michael made his shots. Kobe is the NBA all time leader in missed shots.

Jordan was number 6 on the all time missed shots list and Kareem is on it as well. Doesn’t matter how many shots Kobe missed he still is number 3 all time in scoring and Jordan is number 4. I’m sure if Jordan played with Shaq for 8 seasons his scoring would be even lower since Shaq demanded the ball a lot and had a huge ego as well. Jordan shot 49 percent and Kobe 44 percent not that big of a difference. They both were great players.

#6 on the list means he didn't miss more shots so not sure what the point is.
5% is considerable when it comes to percentages but nice try

@@Mike1122. Jordan finished his career 6th all-time in missed shots and 3rd all-time in career scoring
Kobe finished his career 1st all-time in missed shots and 3rd all-time in career scoring.
      See the difference?
