I went to his seminar , truthfully, I was almost dragged there. I simply gave it a chance by following everything he layed out. I was skeptical , but didn't want open heart surgery. I am now free of diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. After loosing weight, I started running and finished 2nd in my age group in a 5k run. So my heart seams to be ok. Don't wait until you have a serious issue, now is the time to feel better and open up a whole new world.
Yeah I won my age group when I was 45 and on a whole food plant based diet and won my age group and didn't know it because I was talking to someone else when they where giving awards because I never expected coming close to winning my age group race. I read it in the paper the next day. I then called them up and arranged to pick up my award. No I am 51 and run with my dog when it is warmer. Can't wait until spring.
Being Italian, olive oil was the hardest thing for me to give up but I’m so glad I did. I am almost 66 years old and had an unnecessary heart catheterization that revealed my arteries were nice and wide and clear. I completely agree. His book raises a good question-why is 200 the goal doctors quote for cholesterol when it should be to get below 150? We need guidelines that speak the truth!
My husband's cardiologist told him to eat a Akins diet.. we followed this until my husband had a mild stroke. We changed to a whole food plant base program. We bought Ann's books the reverse heart disease and plant base woman warrior. And his numbers are already coming down. And he can breathe better, we feel better. Thank you so much

Thanks Dr. Caldwell, I began a week ago your suggested "Whole Food Plant-Based Diet", lost already 4KG and feel way better than in Keto diet. Keto didn't work for me at all, raised my cholesterol a lot, also I think Keto made me many extra heart arteries plaque I didn't have before starting Keto. So I don't know why people so praise Keto but it's definitely not for everyone, at least I won't suggest it to people with a bad heart condition. Trust me when I say this do not feed your emotions, do not eat because you feel bad do not eat because you are happy. I want you to feed your hunger with healthy foods and once you're hunger is gone a man's hunger is strong and once it is gone you can concentrate on more of the healthy foods for that meal even though you had a banana to curb your craving of eating something that you should not eat. I know this from experience, a man's hunger can be powerful. Just eat something healthy when you get hungry and curb your appetite until you can get home, just go in a store buy a couple of bananas and eat them and make them organic bananas because they taste way better than your standard banana and they're only 10 cents more expensive than the standard. I was educated and taught about what doctor Esselstyn had accomplished with all of his heart patients after I had my stent. My life is improved so much in so many ways. I am so grateful for all his work and the great results that people are getting by changing their lives and following his guidance. I was even more impressed because of the scientific proof of what our foods do to our bodies both good and bad.
Did you experience pain after your stent was put in? I had a stent put in. Since then, I've had ongoing pain. My stress tests and bloodwork are all phenomenal now, and I'm jogging, playing intense tennis, etc... but this pain is still here after 7 months...
I had a stent put in 3 months ago and it's true I feel "something" in my heart like a strange body. Various feelings also the way I turn on my bed. I want to follow the advice given here...but chewing greens 6x a day seems a bit unrealistic... First time I hear about nitric oxide ! Nice to hear Dr. Esselstyn in another informative interview. He is too kind to cardiologists for their lack of understanding of nutrition knowledge because it is not covered in the training. The cardiologists should make it a point to understand nutrition in depth on their own to be able to provide proper guidance to their patients - 'low coverage during training' is a weak excuse!
Such an incredible man. Recently found out I have blockages in 4 arteries, the one on my LAD is borderline so they didn’t stent me. I feel like a ticking time bomb, I guess im still in shock but have started this diet and am praying it will give me a chance to see my kids grow up. We have an epidemic of chronic diseases in this country. With so much money spent on fighting these dreadful diseases, why are there so few doctors like Dr. Esselstyne? What is wrong with out training institutions? The American public is preyed upon by the misinformation/propaganda of the food companies, big pharma, and the self-serving interests of doctors who benefit from sickness instead of wellness. Dr. Esselstyne is the epitome of what a doctor should be... he wants to help people get well.
I've lost over 200 pounds in 30 years. I've been a Vegetarian nearly Vegan for a good part of the last 10 years. I'm going to take this to the ultimate level. Eliminate sweeteners and do the 6 portions of greens every day. And never waver for even a meal. It's just not worth it. Thanx for posting. ❤️
this just literally changed my life, I have heart failure and Doc keeps adding more and more meds all expensive and who knows the side effects cardio, grams, CT scans, stress test etc. etc. Nobody said stop eating that shit food and switch to a plant-based diet. Excellent, only heard of this man last night, month ago had heart attack n stent , and binge watching numerous heart videos, was delighted with my progress, no butter, no milk, no red meat no sugar no frying no bacon, was delighted with oily fish veg n salad n olive oil, 2 coffees n plenty green tea with lemon and water, Now your questions were absolutely appreciated, especially the coffee and Italian friends! Amazed by olive oil, does that mean olives out too . For someone who's bmi was under 25 , i had hoped it was going to be easy, i must get this book, great interview. Two months on I've been following Dr Esselstyn's advice, especially removing the oils and daily intake of the greens and balsamic vinegar, LDL results now 0.8 ( i think the American units for that is multiplied by 38). Fortunately i dont have weight issues, So i can concentrate on his dietary recommendations except for the cup of coffee, and salmon, hake and chicken. As someone who studied chemistry and our chemistry lecturer warned us of the dangers of chlorinated hydrocarbons used to extract caffeine from coffee in the lab!! Not sure how they make decaffeinated coffee nowdays.but green tea might have to do alone! But most importantly, many of the plant based foods in the supermarket, still don't pass for this cardiovascular Endothelial diet, too many contain saturated fat and many items made with coconut oil.
Yes. No oil..no fish no chicken..no caffeinated coffee...but caffeinated tea is OK and decaf coffee is OK...But Patrick you must realise you won't be safe if you're still eating these foods

Thank you for sharing this Jenna! I know it is 4 years after the original post, but I have been really interested in Dr. Esselstyn's findings. I question a lot about protein, olive oil (still many studies show great benefits of it), worry of diabetes with such high carb diets, essential amino acids and fatty acids, meat/fish in moderation. I wish I could pick Dr. Esselstyn's brain. Many longevity doctors and even heart surgeons are mentioning that the older view of no fat diets is flawed ... of course, he is referring to whole plant based. The one key item that Dr. E refers to is "did the asian and rural africans eat it"? Well, did they eat whole plant based bought at our grocery stores ... diets are so controversial depending on who one asks and what research they will point to. Thank you again Jenna! This interview was so thorough and thoughtful. Thank you for providing us with Dr. Esselgtyn's wisdom and kindness. Dr. Esselstyn mentioned that there is very little training in nutrition in medical school. I am wondering whether there is any organization (or individuals) who are pushing the The United States Medical Licensing Examination® (USMLE) to require that a large portion of this exam should be in nutrition and disease prevention? This would impact how medical schools proceed in their training which will impact thousands of doctors and mainstream thought, thus changing the way we all view food and disease.
Love Dr. Esselstyn. Medicare costs are outrageous. The focus is not on preventative. If insurance would cover preventative I think the outcomes would be different. Most of the industrialized nations have cardiovascular issues, not just the US because they have adopted our lifestyle.
I disagree; you're saying that people can be motivated by money but studies have shown that it not typically the case; people are motivated by power -- some that is money but other it is sex or position in a company/in a household. so no, you cannot incentivize humans through insurance
Oh! Can I relate to that. I was on the Atkins diet several times in my life, from the age of 26 onward. This last time I was on the diet 2 years and was not losing weight, and I was feeling really awful. With Congestive heart failure and Polycystic kidney disease, the Atkins diet almost killed me. I am so worried about all the people on the Atkins diet that may not know they have heart disease, or Polycystic Kidney Disease. It makes your health worse and especially so, if you do not know you have these diseases.

@@Dame704 It was pretty bad: LDL was at 5.2 mmol/L or 201.1 mg/dL. I ended up changing my diet and started taking medication, and my LDL dropped to 2.1 mmol/L or 81 mg/dL.
Being overweight is the number one cause or high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc. That said, a plant based whole food diet is the ONLY thing that has been shown to not just slow down, but REVERSE clogged arteries and heart disease risk entirely. Losing weight, even on a low carb diet will to some degree reverse heart disease risk, but you won’t ever reverse heart disease risk and get cholesterol down low enough without cutting the cholesterol and saturated fat and polyunsaturated fat (PUFA). Monounsaturated fat is the healthiest fat. Polyunsaturated fat (PUFA) is the dynamite that for the inflammation and high cholesterol from dietary cholesterol and saturated fat intake is the rocks. Inflammation is the match and when they inflammation comes (by being obese, or as you age), it is the trigger that lights the dynamite (PUFA) and the higher your cholesterol is, the more cholesterol is at risk of oxidizing because there will ALWAYS be some inflammation in the body, to varying degrees. And so the whole structure (saturated fat and cholesterol) comes down …the bigger it is, the harder it falls. Being fat is the biggest source of inflammation that can trigger this. Especially if your fat tissues are full of polyunsaturated fat (PUFA), which is the most rancid fat, and damages lipoproteins. And if you have tons of cholesterol from high dietary fat and cholesterol intake, there will be a ton to stick to your arteries as it goes with the damaged lipo proteins which have these rancid PUFA’s. And so more cholesterol particles from high cholesterol is likely a lot of traffic trying to fit through a damaged tight tunnel with only one narrow lane. It is not carbs doing this. This is well established in the scientific literature. Whole food plant based complex carbs don’t increase cholesterol. Dietary cholesterol and high saturated fat intake does. And high polyunsaturated fat means it’s at higher risk of oxidizing. Vegans make the mistake of eating mainly polyunsaturated fat when they cut out animal fat and cholesterol instead of eating monounsaturated fat. And low carb people make the mistake of eating too much saturated fat and cholesterol in the context of a caloric surplus and often they don’t cut polyunsaturated fat/PUFAlow enough either and still have high PUFA tissue saturation. So when they switch to a high fat/cholesterol diet, they’re full of rancid PUFA which can lead to a cascade of inflammation as it’s prone to causing more oxidative stress. It’s sad that despite the mountain of solid scientific evidence, people still push the idea that it’s healthy whole food carbs doing this, when in reality, it’s high cholesterol and fat (including PUFA) clogging the arteries. It’s like flat earners or the nutritional world who deny that dietary fat include PUFA and cholesterol have nothing to do with heart disease.
I have congestive heart failure and high cholesterol, with a side issue of Polycystic Kidney disease. My cardiologist (who is at a very unhealthy weight) told me to eat less meat, no coffee and that olive oil is good for you! I argued that it is was not good for you. Then, I ignored her. I have a Nephrologist who said the same thing and is very unfriendly, I might add. She never sent me to the Nutritionist either. So, on my own I researched everything I could. I had heard that meat was bad for you so I went vegetarian. Then I went vegan. Then I went plant based. It was hard, but I started feeling better. I have a vegan friend (who has heart disease after 30 some years on the vegan diet) who suggested just doing the vegan diet again, and when eating out doing the 2% rule of 2% bad stuff centered around a vegan diet. So I did. Now I am not feeling good at all and have made a decision to go back to plant based. After listening to your video I see the light, and knowing I have felt good before, so I know it is the way to go. Thank you for this information. It is gold. Funny thing….God did not like us or intend for us to eat meat, but allowed it. Look where that got us.
My cholesterol went from 380 to 193 after only six weeks on his recommended diet. My LDL - C went from 280 to 125. I did not see numbers dropped significantly on a regular vegan diet that included oils.
Great questions especially on the barriers of why people are slow in adopting and putting information like this into practice. What i also wanted to hear was his take on organic vs non-organic vegetables. Is it worthwhile to choose organic over non-organic? I think the next step is for someone or group to spread *great* recipes to replace the steaks, burgers, lasagna, and other "killer foods" people immerse themselves in. I'm trying to sell my parents into this diet but the reply is, "plant-based diet? there's nothing else to eat!!". If we had a bunch of recipes with appetizing photos and videos, that would greatly help.

I completely agree. His book raises a good question-why is 200 the goal doctors quote for cholesterol when it should be to get below 150? We need guidelines that speak the truth!
My husband's cardiologist told him to eat a Akins diet.. we followed this until my husband had a mild stroke. We changed to a whole food plant base program. We bought Ann's books the reverse heart disease and plant base woman warrior. And his numbers are already coming down. And he can breathe better, we feel better. Thank you so much

Those greens are filled with nasty anti-nutrients that can destroy the thyroid and cause other damage.

Thanks Dr. Caldwell, I began a week ago your suggested "Whole Food Plant-Based Diet", lost already 4KG and feel way better than in Keto diet. Keto didn't work for me at all, raised my cholesterol a lot, also I think Keto made me many extra heart arteries plaque I didn't have before starting Keto. So I don't know why people so praise Keto but it's definitely not for everyone, at least I won't suggest it to people with a bad heart condition. Cuz there's a time to be born and there's a time to die, and we might as well be as healthy as we can be while we're here and I don't want somebody changing a diaper our wife and my butt for 10 or 15 years laying in some bed hooked up to a bunch of monitors and wires hanging out of being tubes. Question is do you want to be healthy until it's time to just go to sleep one night and not wake up or do you want to go to the hospital and be stuck with needles and knives I'm stuck with wires and tubes. That's what you got to ask yourself. Study Dr esselstein and listening to Dr goldhamer.. Trust me when I say this do not feed your emotions, do not eat because you feel bad do not eat because you are happy. I want you to feed your hunger with healthy foods and once you're hunger is gone a man's hunger is strong and once it is gone you can concentrate on more of the healthy foods for that meal even though you had a banana to curb your craving of eating something that you should not eat. I know this from experience, a man's hunger can be powerful. Just eat something healthy when you get hungry and curb your appetite until you can get home, just go in a store buy a couple of bananas and eat them and make them organic bananas because they taste way better than your standard banana and they're only 10 cents more expensive than the standard. I was educated and taught about what doctor Esselstyn had accomplished with all of his heart patients after I had my stent. My life is improved so much in so many ways. I am so grateful for all his work and the great results that people are getting by changing their lives and following his guidance. I was even more impressed because of the scientific proof of what our foods do to our bodies both good and bad.
Did you experience pain after your stent was put in? I had a stent put in. Since then, I've had ongoing pain. My stress tests and bloodwork are all phenomenal now, and I'm jogging, playing intense tennis, etc... but this pain is still here after 7 months...
I had a stent put in 3 months ago and it's true I feel "something" in my heart like a strange body. Various feelings also the way I turn on my bed. I want to follow the advice given here...but chewing greens 6x a day seems a bit unrealistic... First time I hear about nitric oxide ! Nice to hear Dr. Esselstyn in another informative interview. He is too kind to cardiologists for their lack of understanding of nutrition knowledge because it is not covered in the training. The cardiologists should make it a point to understand nutrition in depth on their own to be able to provide proper guidance to their patients - 'low coverage during training' is a weak excuse!
Because most Doctors don't treat the cause, they treat the result of illness.

Such an incredible man. Recently found out I have blockages in 4 arteries, the one on my LAD is borderline so they didn’t stent me. I feel like a ticking time bomb, I guess im still in shock but have started this diet and am praying it will give me a chance to see my kids grow up. Has anyone here had a similar experience to me, extensive disease and managed to avoid surgery or further surgery ?

We have an epidemic of chronic diseases in this country. With so much money spent on fighting these dreadful diseases, why are there so few doctors like Dr. Esselstyne? What is wrong with out training institutions? The American public is preyed upon by the misinformation/propaganda of the food companies, big pharma, and the self-serving interests of doctors who benefit from sickness instead of wellness. Dr. Esselstyne is the epitome of what a doctor should be... he wants to help people get well.
I've lost over 200 pounds in 30 years. I've been a Vegetarian nearly Vegan for a good part of the last 10 years. I'm going to take this to the ultimate level. Eliminate sweeteners and do the 6 portions of greens every day. And never waver for even a meal. It's just not worth it. Thanx for posting. ❤️

Excellent, only heard of this man last night, month ago had heart attack n stent , and binge watching numerous heart videos, was delighted with my progress, no butter, no milk, no red meat no sugar no frying no bacon, was delighted with oily fish veg n salad n olive oil, 2 coffees n plenty green tea with lemon and water, Now your questions were absolutely appreciated, especially the coffee and Italian friends! Amazed by olive oil, does that mean olives out too . For someone who's bmi was under 25 , i had hoped it was going to be easy, i must get this book, great interview.
Two months on I've been following Dr Esselstyn's advice, especially removing the oils and daily intake of the greens and balsamic vinegar, LDL results now 0.8 ( i think the American units for that is multiplied by 38). Fortunately i dont have weight issues, So i can concentrate on his dietary recommendations except for the cup of coffee, and salmon, hake and chicken. As someone who studied chemistry and our chemistry lecturer warned us of the dangers of chlorinated hydrocarbons used to extract caffeine from coffee in the lab!! Not sure how they make decaffeinated coffee nowdays.but green tea might have to do alone!
But most importantly, many of the plant based foods in the supermarket, still don't pass for this cardiovascular Endothelial diet, too many contain saturated fat and many items made with coconut oil.

Thank you for sharing this Jenna! I know it is 4 years after the original post, but I have been really interested in Dr. Esselstyn's findings. I question a lot about protein, olive oil (still many studies show great benefits of it), worry of diabetes with such high carb diets, essential amino acids and fatty acids, meat/fish in moderation. I wish I could pick Dr. Esselstyn's brain. Many longevity doctors and even heart surgeons are mentioning that the older view of no fat diets is flawed ... of course, he is referring to whole plant based. The one key item that Dr. E refers to is "did the asian and rural africans eat it"? Well, did they eat whole plant based bought at our grocery stores ... diets are so controversial depending on who one asks and what research they will point to. Thank you again Jenna! This interview was so thorough and thoughtful. Thank you for providing us with Dr. Esselgtyn's wisdom and kindness. Dr. Esselstyn mentioned that there is very little training in nutrition in medical school. I am wondering whether there is any organization (or individuals) who are pushing the The United States Medical Licensing Examination® (USMLE) to require that a large portion of this exam should be in nutrition and disease prevention?
This would impact how medical schools proceed in their training which will impact thousands of doctors and mainstream thought, thus changing the way we all view food and disease.
Love Dr. Esselstyn. Medicare costs are outrageous. The focus is not on preventative. If insurance would cover preventative I think the outcomes would be different. Most of the industrialized nations have cardiovascular issues, not just the US because they have adopted our lifestyle.
I disagree; you're saying that people can be motivated by money but studies have shown that it not typically the case; people are motivated by power -- some that is money but other it is sex or position in a company/in a household. so no, you cannot incentivize humans through insurance
Oh! Can I relate to that. I was on the Atkins diet several times in my life, from the age of 26 onward. This last time I was on the diet 2 years and was not losing weight, and I was feeling really awful. With Congestive heart failure and Polycystic kidney disease, the Atkins diet almost killed me. I am so worried about all the people on the Atkins diet that may not know they have heart disease, or Polycystic Kidney Disease. It makes your health worse and especially so, if you do not know you have these diseases.

@@Dame704 It was pretty bad: LDL was at 5.2 mmol/L or 201.1 mg/dL. I ended up changing my diet and started taking medication, and my LDL dropped to 2.1 mmol/L or 81 mg/dL.

Being overweight is the number one cause or high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc.
That said, a plant based whole food diet is the ONLY thing that has been shown to not just slow down, but REVERSE clogged arteries and heart disease risk entirely.
Losing weight, even on a low carb diet will to some degree reverse heart disease risk, but you won’t ever reverse heart disease risk and get cholesterol down low enough without cutting the cholesterol and saturated fat and polyunsaturated fat (PUFA). Monounsaturated fat is the healthiest fat. Polyunsaturated fat (PUFA) is the dynamite that for the inflammation and high cholesterol from dietary cholesterol and saturated fat intake is the rocks. Inflammation is the match and when they inflammation comes (by being obese, or as you age), it is the trigger that lights the dynamite (PUFA) and the higher your cholesterol is, the more cholesterol is at risk of oxidizing because there will ALWAYS be some inflammation in the body, to varying degrees. And so the whole structure (saturated fat and cholesterol) comes down …the bigger it is, the harder it falls. Being fat is the biggest source of inflammation that can trigger this. Especially if your fat tissues are full of polyunsaturated fat (PUFA), which is the most rancid fat, and damages lipoproteins. And if you have tons of cholesterol from high dietary fat and cholesterol intake, there will be a ton to stick to your arteries as it goes with the damaged lipo proteins which have these rancid PUFA’s. And so more cholesterol particles from high cholesterol is likely a lot of traffic trying to fit through a damaged tight tunnel with only one narrow lane.
It is not carbs doing this. This is well established in the scientific literature.
Whole food plant based complex carbs don’t increase cholesterol. Dietary cholesterol and high saturated fat intake does. And high polyunsaturated fat means it’s at higher risk of oxidizing. Vegans make the mistake of eating mainly polyunsaturated fat when they cut out animal fat and cholesterol instead of eating monounsaturated fat. And low carb people make the mistake of eating too much saturated fat and cholesterol in the context of a caloric surplus and often they don’t cut polyunsaturated fat/PUFAlow enough either and still have high PUFA tissue saturation. So when they switch to a high fat/cholesterol diet, they’re full of rancid PUFA which can lead to a cascade of inflammation as it’s prone to causing more oxidative stress.
It’s sad that despite the mountain of solid scientific evidence, people still push the idea that it’s healthy whole food carbs doing this, when in reality, it’s high cholesterol and fat (including PUFA) clogging the arteries. It’s like flat earners or the nutritional world who deny that dietary fat include PUFA and cholesterol have nothing to do with heart disease.
What vegan foods that contain the polyunsaturated fats that are not healthy?

I have congestive heart failure and high cholesterol, with a side issue of Polycystic Kidney disease. My cardiologist (who is at a very unhealthy weight) told me to eat less meat, no coffee and that olive oil is good for you! I argued that it is was not good for you. Then, I ignored her. I have a Nephrologist who said the same thing and is very unfriendly, I might add. She never sent me to the Nutritionist either. So, on my own I researched everything I could. I had heard that meat was bad for you so I went vegetarian. Then I went vegan. Then I went plant based. It was hard, but I started feeling better. I have a vegan friend (who has heart disease after 30 some years on the vegan diet) who suggested just doing the vegan diet again, and when eating out doing the 2% rule of 2% bad stuff centered around a vegan diet. So I did. Now I am not feeling good at all and have made a decision to go back to plant based. After listening to your video I see the light, and knowing I have felt good before, so I know it is the way to go. Thank you for this information. It is gold. Funny thing….God did not like us or intend for us to eat meat, but allowed it. Look where that got us.
Someone here reduced artery blocks considerably with this diet? How long did it take and what percentage? Please help.

My cholesterol went from 380 to 193 after only six weeks on his recommended diet. My LDL - C went from 280 to 125.
I did not see numbers dropped significantly on a regular vegan diet that included oils.
Great questions especially on the barriers of why people are slow in adopting and putting information like this into practice. What i also wanted to hear was his take on organic vs non-organic vegetables. Is it worthwhile to choose organic over non-organic?
I think the next step is for someone or group to spread *great* recipes to replace the steaks, burgers, lasagna, and other "killer foods" people immerse themselves in. I'm trying to sell my parents into this diet but the reply is, "plant-based diet? there's nothing else to eat!!". If we had a bunch of recipes with appetizing photos and videos, that would greatly help.
