I socialize all the time. I have my little pkg in my purse that has hummus, balsamic vinegar, beans, maybe dressing or sauce depending on what I'm going to eat. Oat milk for tea, maple syrup if oatmeal, etc. I can get a plain salad, steamed veggies, a potato or plain rice anywhere. Leafside meals are a lifesaver too.
Im a vegan for animal/ethical reasons, but learning that if I just take a baby-step further by eliminating nuts and olive oil I can prevent a heart attack, what an awesome benefit!!
Excellent interview, excellent questions. I must admit i have wondered about the egg whites, and the sweetner Stevia that i use. I have heard the good doctor say on many occasions the main problem with stevia is that it keeps you craving sweet things, which makes the lifestyle a constant battle...
I was so happy Dr. Esselstyn addressed the Stevia question, I just bought some too. I only use it in my coffee and tea. Not sure what I can use instead, as I make my iced tea from scratch and use it to sweeten it up a bit. I'll keep looking for a natural alternative like honey or munk fruit. Loved this interview, I have lots of the Esselstyn's books and they are great. I have also struggled with peer pressure for going plant-based, it's why I switched back to meat and dairy. The pressure isn't from my friends but my family which is harder to deal with as I see them on a regular basis. After reading The Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease cookbook again I'm now trying to go back to a plant-based lifestyle. Dolores

It is just crazy that Doctors do not get nutrition training in Medical schools. Every doctor visit should include some nutrition discussion. The majority of the population is over weight or obese leading to high blood pressure, heart disease and cancer. Schools and hospital cafeterias should be leading the way to good health by setting the example of what is a healthy meal and teaching people what to eat and why.. Every person in the hospital for heart disease should have a nutrition class before being checked out from the hospital with follow up education and training in nutrition. Medicare and Medicaid should require patient nutrition education as part of their standard of care. Nutrition information should be run on the hospital TV channel.

The labels show zero saturated fats in the hemp seeds powder sold at Whole Foods. I read that when hemp seeds are turned into powder all the oil and saturated fats are processed and removed? Yes, I feel that way sometimes as well, but when you know the things that are absolutely off-limits for a heart patient, you can leave those out of the recipes, such as nuts and avocado, and too much maple syrup… For those who don’t have specific heart disease, they can eat those things in moderation. The new book does list if a recipe is heart safe although they don’t use those words. I can’t remember the specific words right now.
My Question is with NaCl (salt). I am a whole plant based athlete. I run most days about 10 kms and frequently sweat. If I don’t supplement with salt my running times are slow, I get cramps, brain fog and light headiness standing from couching. I find it unhelpful saying “no salt” . Please can you recommend your daily allowance people should aim for. The governmental RDI is about a teaspoon a day (5000mg). Have you any studies or evidence that a lower amount is better. I can see there appears good evidence for low oil and sugar. Evidence please.
Most athletes take a little bit of electrolyte powder or drops in their water especially when working out. I can tell you, unequivocally, that it makes me feel better. I often felt light-headed until I started using the electrolytes.
People need to take personal responsibility for their life and health. The general over all health of people has declined the last few decades. Even children today have signs of artery disease. Fast foods and sugary drinks have long term consequences. There is an obesity epidemic today where over 60% of the population is overweight or obese. What is common today and "NORMAL" is not healthy. The average person today is not healthy and is taking medications. Heart attacks were once only common in people over 65. Today people in their 40 are having heart attacks. Add more plants and vegetables to your diet and less junk and overly processed foods. Being thin is a sign of good health. Being over weight or obese is a sign of bad health. Poor diet, lack of exercise and obesity are contributing to high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

Did you have another heart attack? It might be working but its hard to tell from so little information. If you had not switched you might have had another one. Also, doesn't genetics play a role?
It is a lifestyle, not A DIET. I have been with a healthy eating plant based lifestyle for 15 years. Feel way better, no heartburn, great BMI (22), no high blood pressure, good lipid panel, overall great health.

Sure seems like Health Insurance Companies and Medicare would be receptive to a WFPB vegan message. It would save them money on health care costs. This could off set the lobbying by food manufacturers. Maybe educating health Insurance Companies and Medicare administrators should be a priority. Health Insurance companies might even push doctors to take nutrition more seriously by paying for nutrition counseling of patients.

Hi Grant, all whole grains and seeds and plants contain some healthy fats. Fats are an essential part of plant biology. They are just in low concentrations in most plants, but they are still there.
So, if a totally plant-based diet is the best way of eating, then why do we need to supplement with B12? Think about it. A "perfect" diet does not require supplementation with any man-made processed substance.

Esselstyn is not a RD and was never a real cardiologist and his diet is not accredited by anything since he never reversed anything in any human, if he did he would have awards, honors or a Noble Prize and he has none as related to the nutrition or cardiovascular field.

It's easy to say "should" but the reality is that the dairy industry, the agricultural industry, the FDA, etc are motivated by politcs and profits.

Salt is an anti-depressant for me, I get very lethargic & depressed on a no salt diet.
