Today I look at the EVH 5150 Iconic 40-Watt combo amp and swap in a couple of Eminence speakers to test the tonal differences that simple upgrade makes! After the A/B/C tone demo, I go into some of the cool and not so cool things about this amp!

I like the stock speaker. Break it in for a few months. I run my combo out to other cabs too and they sound different than the speaker in the combo, but not necessarily better, just different.
It is definitely not the worst speaker. It really only seemed limited to me when pushing the red channel. I am not a fan of it only being 40watts handling. But some break in time could soften the boxy low mid resonance and somewhat brittle upper mids I was hearing in the room. Being only a single speaker it is also lacking some of the depth that multiple speakers offer. I do typically like to run 212 and 412 cabs.
The Lewitt with the Swamp Thang sounded killer. I’ve never been fully sold on just using a 57 and this shows why. A 57/421 combo is great but just a 57 doesn’t capture the low end the way I’d like. Lewitt may be another to add to the arsenal too. Also your red channel gain level is insane. I usually go 4 max with an SD-1 and if the burn engaged I’m only at 3 max.
Yeah. With the stock speaker I was pushing the gain more than I liked and with the burn it was a bit of a chainsaw! I only used the the SD-1 with the OD on the green channel but am going to play around with the red channel a bit more. Burn is more usable to me now with the swamp thang. It gets me in a zone I am staring to like. Both lewitt mics sound really good, but the dynamic mic is like a better version of 57, and I may be using it more often.
Something to add for testing for the iconic series is red channel gain as low as you can with burn on the add your boost of choice. I can’t recall where I saw this suggested but it might be a thing to explore for ya and yes I know it’s a bunch of gain lol. Swamp thang I liked for clean, man o war for gain in general but I’m sure room sound is great for both for sure over stock. Most folks recommend for a 1x12 is creamback or even a v30 but the iconics presence taper is aggressive in general for a evh amp. Great video, liked and following…welcome to the Facebook group also!
Having a more workable speaker opens up a lot more range on this amp for me. I do plan to play with the red channel more. But like most 5150s the OD/Crunch green channel (blue on the 5150III) is so good!
@@BaritoneGoatStudio I use the 5150 el34 50 watt head with a 2x12 v30 cab and it does the modern thing well. If you like green that way you would be a blue channel fan in general on other evh amps. I set my red channel at 3 on gain with a klon style circuit boost also (Wampler tumnus deluxe). Tube screamers for red I feel it’s too much cut for my taste unless you flip on the burn mode and drop the gain for an iconic style amp…I find myself leaning towards a Klon circuit more and more vs a tube screamer, if you haven’t tried it I highly recommend it.
@@springsgaming7551 oh yeah. I own an EVH Stealth 50 Watt. Boosted blue channel is my go to. I used to run a Plumes OD in front of it quite a bit. I have a video kicking around where I did a bunch of OD pedals in front of a Triple Rec, including the Soul Food pedal which is a Klon style... but I am often using the Boss SD-1 as my main boost for the EVH. Fair amount of cut, but not as clipped as the traditional TS. I also have a couple other drives that give more control over the low end, which I like.
@@BaritoneGoatStudio I haven’t tried any boss pedals for a long time and should pick up a sd1 at some point lol. I have a jhs bonsai that does something like the sd1 in the first setting but I tend to put it in the Keely mod selection. Sounds more natural and better low end for emgs but I haven’t tried the official pedal though either so no true reference for either tones.
The man o war sounds great for leads. I like the stock for riffs
I love eminence speakers! That EVH speaker is kinda gross. Swamp thang is so weird and unique but I love it! Man o war sounds really good!
Swamp Thang is a very low end heavy and dark speaker in the room, but that actually seems to help me out in how I like to shape my tone overall. The man o war is a more traditional metal sounding speaker. If this was a thrash rig, I would go with the man o war. The man o war and swamp thing together would be a hell of combo.
@@BaritoneGoatStudio true that! Would be a cool combo. I want all of the eminence speakers. I really enjoy playing around with them. Nice job on this video man.
Maybe consider trying something other than an SM57? As for speakers though how about an Eminence DV-77?
As for reverbs, the best one I've ever tried was the Abominable Haunting Pools pedal.
I mentioned a DV 77 as a possible choice! I really like the one I have. I ended up going with the Lewitt mics during the longer amp demo in the second half of the video to really try and get a sense of the Swamp Thangs tone.
I love my Swamp Thang mixed with a more grindy speaker because of the low end you get from it. It’s great in a 2x12.
