You missed a tiny rule on page 19: For the lesson card "Family Tree", a family of 7 or more is required to complete the lession.

Instead of playing easy, medium, or hard, it makes sense to put out all goals and then see what "grade" you got by seeing which difficulty mode you beat. In this way, you can retroactively be playing on easy mode.
It would certainly be possible to do this! By knowing the extra cards you're going to make the game more challenging for yourself and easy wont be as easy as if you didn't have those cards visible, but if you're OK with that it might be a fun option.
Not a fan of how-to-solo guides that want me to learn multiplayer first. This is the same with the instruction manual for this game. If you just want to dive in solo as I do then you need to constantly flip back and forth between the multiplayer and solo sections of the instruction manual. Having said that, it's worth the effort to piece together the solo rules because the game is fantastic once you get the hang of it, very sublime mechanics.

Are you allowed to discard PUBLIC LESSONS in the card draft? The FAQ on the back of the rules says no…but perhaps I’ve misunderstood something.

Hi Richard, you are allowed to discard public lessons during the card draft, meaning you don't have to choose to keep and pay for the card.
You are not allowed to discard the card once it has been played and put out on the table. Some cards say "discard a lesson card" and this rule is covering that case, where you can not discard a played public lesson to meet that criteria.
