  • The Shark V2, a combination 3D printer and engraver. But from the start it was riddled with questionable engineering, ominous warnings, and zero wire management. But despite all this does it work? Let's find out.

    Have the same model. It does the basics like I wanted it to. I didn’t really have any need for the laser and could’ve done just fine without it.. Buuut, maybe I’ll have to try etching some of my PLA prints since you’ve demonstrated that is possible

    Yeah the laser on that printer is almost useless or if you have hours of time then you can get one thing done due to it being ungodly slow. I did find the dual color printing to be pretty accurate but you're not going to want to mix materials just make sure it's the same material just two different colors.
    Also what they meant by plugging in the laser module and destroying the machine you can't hot swap it. Ask me how I know 😅
    Overall it does decent 3D prints but for its price point it's not recommended.

    • @3dpprofessor
      @3dpprofessor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's not hot swappable either?!
      Never mind that the open laser on this could be pointed any which way and fired because there's no safety on it. This is not recommended at any age.

    any laser engraver or cutter without a laser blocking enclosure, and safety measures that prevent firing the laser when the enclosure is open is a no-go for me. and also makes me wonder if this printer even has thermal runaway protection enabled.

    I have a shark v1 and a v2 and I love this printer it works just fine for me print quality is fine depends how uptight you are if you drive a Lamborghini your gonna hate a Toyota even tho that Toyota is more reliable

    • @3dpprofessor
      @3dpprofessor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not so much that this is a Toyota, but that this is a Toyota that someone has spot welded a Gerry-Rigged tow truck rig on that they built themselves, and figured out how to get it working, but never actually used a tow truck so their solution is non-standard and kind of a mess.
      But, I'll tell you the truth, I've used worse. In fact I'm testing worse right now.

    Hi professor. Any sure-fire recommendations for a ~300-400 USD budget 3d printer? Should I just get an ender 3 v2?

    • @AndrewAHayes
      @AndrewAHayes 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      dont get a V2 get a Voxelab Aquila version 2, you get a V2 clone that is actualy better than the V2 and cheaper to boot

    • @3dpprofessor
      @3dpprofessor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Heh, sure fire. Are you hoping for a laser or a thermal runaway?
      It very much depends on who you are, and knowing nothing about you, I'd recommend checking out the Flashforge Adventurer 3. Because I've seen tons of Ender 3 V2s that were "broken", when the only problem was people didn't read the directions and level the bed properly, and the Adventurer 3 doesn't have that problem.
      That said, if you can handle a little more technical of a challenge, the Ender 3 V2 is probably the most mature option out there.

    I got the V1 via kickstarter and the laser is a bit meh. The dual extrusion is kinda neat but honestly just one is all I use. It does a pretty good job though. HOWEVER the biggest gripe is that the firmware is closed source! Lame. What's unfortunate is that they have limited the laser features because if you think about it what if you could use the laser to etch a 3D object since you have a z axis on it. Just a waste of the other multiple features if you can't combine them.

    This really sounds like a manager that said, "we're shipping this to be ready for Christmas!". Followed by an engineer telling them the product isn't done at all. Who knows, perhaps they've run out of money and couldn't do much more

    • @3dpprofessor
      @3dpprofessor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think this is going to help them get more money.

    This printer is good but does have issues that you did not cover. The auto bed leveling is a big flaw. The sensor head rests inside the hot end mount. I found on my shark that the sensor mounts to low for the nozzle. I have had many failed prints then I figured it out. You have modify the configuration file for best performance.

    • @3dpprofessor
      @3dpprofessor  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This one doesn't have auto bed leveling. Did the V1? Did I get a pre-release version again that wasn't feature complete?

    If you target consumers, your laser should be shielded properly.

    • @3dpprofessor
      @3dpprofessor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. This thing could be pointed anywhere and there's nothing in the design that prevents that. That's something I should have mentioned.

    Strongly resembles the ender 3 v2, I'm worried you don't mention it

    • @3dpprofessor
      @3dpprofessor  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My original idea for this had me duct tapping a potato peeler to it and calling it a 5-in-1 with the added functions of peeling and making curly fries, and then saying something like "if they can strap stuff on an Ender 3 and call it a new thing, so can I." But then the shark with a laser thing was brought up and I forgot it.
      But to tell the truth, besides being a Mendle frame, this has some significant derivations from the Ender 3. I've sounded off on clones before, so if you go back a few videos you can see my thoughts on that.

    Its all down to Creality getting away with putting out half finished badly designed printers and those same printers selling well so other manufacturers follow suit

    • @3dpprofessor
      @3dpprofessor  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be fair, Creality doesn't do that any more. The bar has been raised, and these guys didn't get the memo.

    I have seen other reviews of this, and I did not realize that they two extruders were on different places on the frame. How tough would it be to place the lower extruder on the top? This is a classic example of the 'sports-car/dump-truck' school of design (we added EVERY feature we would think of but none of them will done WELL). When will these manufacturers figure out that the second point of contact with their products is the DIRECTIONS (first, is the box. If it is shipped and looks like Fred-Ex barely slowed down before THROWING the box on the porch), and CHENGLISH is a sure sign for me of a future FAIL product. (My anet A-8 (with classically BAD Chenglish translations) was traded for a service on my tevo tornado)

      Between the jankiness of the dual extrusion system and the laser etcher, this has the feel of a hobbyist modded project rather than a commercial product. It's like a proof of concept someone decided to run into full production without telling the engineers.
      I'm glad they didn't try to emulate Snapmaker further by including a CNC, god knows what kind of slapdash horror they'd have built.
