      Totally agree. Most of the car youtubers are doing just regular reviews and saying wltp range as the range you actually get from the car. They have no car knowledge and i am fed up of them. Thanks god for bjorn. I am just waiting when he will test new mg5 ev or mg zs ev long range and based on bjorn tests i will decide if i buy it or no.

    That's disconcerting that the car doesn't tell you something is wrong. The module could short and the owner would have no warning beforehand until the car is on fire. VW better fix that. It should be a simple software update.

      The BMS will eventually warn the driver once the cells drop under maximum tolerance. Sometimes all they need is a complete cell balancing

    • @peterjorgensen3
      @peterjorgensen3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe the BMS just shuts the module off so it doesn't do anything. That doesn't mean it's going to explode or anything, it may just not have a connection to some of the cells.

    I had the same problem with my e-Up. Range dropped crazy when SOC was under 25%. First, the dealer told me, that electric cars consume more than most people expect and there was a lot of back and forth emailing. At the end, I measurend the cell voltage and showed them that one cell is 0.5V off. Then VW replaced the battery. But most people dont have that skill or think, that the dealer is right.

    Sad. The old Tiguans had DynaAudio systems back when VAG was using them in everything including the Veyron. That was the best factory system in their cars I've heard, I remember they also had a system in the s80 v8. The really lows were lacking still tho as those cars didn't have subs. I'm sure if they DSP corrected the speakers better it wouldn't sound so bad, Helix managed to make the factory system in the Golf sound so much better with only a new amp and sub addition.

    I actually have the battery issue with my id3. It has been there for a long time and at the beginning there was no error message however I noticed that the range would drop appr. 50km when I entered the car. I then started to get an error message when I fast charged the car however it was only an error stating that there was an electrical error and an should contact the shop. It disappeared after appr. 50km and the came back when I fast charged. I called the shop and they tested the car but since it was a periodical error they couldn’t find anything. Or maybe they didn’t have the knowledge or the tools maybe? After a few weeks the error came back when I charged at home and then they acknowledged that there were 2 of the batteries that were defective. I am still waiting to get it back. I have waited 2 weeks now and they estimated 4 weeks :-/

      This freaks me out; my wife is getting an ID4 soon and I’d hate this type of hassle. I was hoping she’d go for a model y and avoid legacy brand “service” as I’d imagine if there’s something wrong we’ll have an awful time getting it sorted with the dealer as dealers in Ireland aren’t great when it comes to technical service issues. My experience with Tesla however has been amazing and one of the main reasons I wanted my wife to avoid legacy auto makers. Toyota /Lexus are the exception but my experience of the German legacy brands when problems arise is poor across all the brands.

    Better range and almost same efficiency with the Model Y LR in similar conditions. This even though ID5 is + 300kg and COD is 0.27 vs 0.23. Seems that VW drive train is really efficient. If VW also made an egg shaped car with limited sound proofing, equipment and suspension to keep the weight down, its range would be crazy good and it would be faster and cheaper. Maybe launch it under a new cheaper brand.

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That Model Y LR I tested last year had only 70 kWh net capacity (vs 73.4 kWh on ID5). And at high speed, Model Y was 13 % more efficient. If we tested Model Y LR from today (which is more relevant since ID5 is brand new), then the net capacity is 75 kWh and the range would be 528 km.

    • @johnmoe883
      @johnmoe883 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@bjornnyland Wh/km was 206 vs 220 at high speed so the difference was 6.7% and at lower speed difference was only 4%. Very small advantage in efficiency for the difference in drag and weight. Classic VW not correctly reporting vehicle performance. How would the average Joe know they had a faulty battery module? Why was the car not reporting the fault? These legacy autos are treating their extremely loyal customers as fools. Disappointing.

      “Legacy auto” treating their customers as fools? Does Tesla not? Last time I checked, a concerning amount of cars have caught on fire and caused multiple deaths with zero prior warning and Tesla has barely investigated it nevertheless start a recall. GM had a couple Bolts catch on fire harming nobody and yet recalled every single one of them. So are you implying “non legacy” brands like Tesla don’t treat their customers like fools? Cause they do.

    Faulty battery module and 150kw+ charge speed... This can lead to thermal runaway. Volkswagen should work at BMS safety features when there is any battery issue.

    Ok, you were short at 123 km/h. Motorways in Norway are limited to 100 km/h. What would a ticket cost if you get caught. 😉

    Is anyone else as worried about the bloated weight of these EV's

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Extra weight doesn't increase consumption that much as long as the drivetrain is efficient. MEB platform has very efficient drivetrain. That's why this large ID5 has the same consumption as smaller less efficient cars such as Fiat 500e, Opel Mokka-e and Polestar 2.

      The main danger of such heavy vehicles is the kinetic energy they carry. They are deathly on small collisions in the city against vulnerable users, like children, elderly, cyclists, etc. However the efficiency is not affected so much as the increase of mass is usually sprung mass with a similar unsprung mass compared to lighter vehicles.

      And yet efficiency is much better than ICE, where 65% is burnt just to produce exhaust gases and heat.

    Most likely vw will sell that defective crap to someone and when that someone will call about the range, vw will just tell them "it's your fault, you drive too fast, you charge dc only, lots of variables, no, we don't trust any of those obd apps, those apps might have broken it and we should void your warranty but we'll let it slide this time. So no issue with the car, ok?". Just vw business as usual.

    It worries me that they sell these cars and when there's a bunch of capacity missing because of a faulty module the cars doesn't alert and VW doesn't know.
    I would not buy anything form VW.
