I have a 2020 MS performance, and 324 at 100% (estimated) and am curious if I could achieve the 330+ miles as I can easily achieve less than 280 watts/mile on highway runs. Also looking at bolts and and E-trons as well. Thanks in advance, just a nerd wanting to see numbers. PS hope the Plaid is on the road sooner than later!!

Kyle - what software version was the car on? Apparently the last two versions - staring with .6 - have caused an issue on all refresh s and x vehicles that results in a harmonic hum that is audible but not that loud (you may not have noticed it outside as opposed to in a garage), something to do with frequency setting when the connectors are closed. I have no idea what that actually means, but it is said to affect range a bit. So it’s worth understand if this may have been a factor for your test.

Lots to like about EV9 but several deal killers. 1. It should be way cheaper, but dealers are asking $20k plus markup. So until that stops, off the list. 2. Still uses CCS plug, did that already…. no thanks. 3. Range isn’t great for a family hauler. 4. No tax credit offered. I’d look at this in a couple years when all those issues will be addressed, just not today. Fully loaded they're also similarly priced. So if you don't want the insane Plaid, which would destroy the M60 in performance, I guess the iX 50 would be the clear choice over the normal Model X then.

It makes sense - the iX50 has a range estimate of 630km (wltp), and the new X is at 580km (wltp). The iX does not have that much space though, looks like a boat with beaver teeth, currently lacks the charging network that Tesla has (even though it can use the Tesla network in a few countries such as Norway.. blocking chargers for others due to location of charge port), and the software is not even close. New BMW seats are not as good either… imo, but that is subjective, but the iX seats are just way too flat for me.

My own car had a 13+ gallon tank, but even when the gauge said "dead empty!" the most that could be stuffed in the tank was 10 gallons, indicating a 75 mile reserve.
And then there were older Jaguars, with two separate tanks, like aircraft, so if you picked up bad gas you could simply switch over to the other tank.

Also, if it was due to battery degradation, frankly, 10,000 miles just isn't that much. If the Model X lost that much capacity after only 10,000 miles, that's more concerning than anything else.

Love your testing and videos, Kyle. Just a thought:
Kyle left the A/C on while charging on the iX, but not on the Tesla. I'm sure running the compressor hard in the X initially is why your efficiency appeared so high at your 90% SoC update.
As someone who lives in Florida and has spent nearly 2 years in an Tesla, that initial cranking of the A/C in a hot cabin uses a ton of power. That was probably a 3 to 5 mile difference right there. The initial degradation of Li-Ion batteries compared to the iX probably is another 3 to 9 miles. You also may have been able to limp out another 3-6 miles if you really tried to kill it. So best case, you may get 350 miles out of a Model X at 70MPH. But the average vehicle will not, so your test is a much more realistic sample.
We all know that real world variables such as: HVAC, Wind, Elevation Change, Road Surface, Car/Battery/Tire condition/type, plays so much into the range you get on a test.
I do appreciate the work and love watching all these videos. But for those trying to buy a car, don't base your EV choice on how many miles it's rated for, or TH-cam range tests. More important is the actual efficiency (ie Wh/mi) vs usable battery size if you really want to compare two cars apples to apples. But Miles of Range is easier to sell people on, I suppose, even though it's not super helpful. If you want to beat EPA ratings in any EV, cruise at 50MPH with HVAC off and windows closed. I guarantee you'll see about 400 miles in either the Tesla or BMW. But in reality, the car itself is what it comes down to. Things like practically, performance, comfort, style, features, and charging network are all way more important that any minor difference in range. If efficiency or battery size are hugely different, then that's definitely going to make a difference. But two cars with similar efficiency and sized batteries, each within 15% of each other, it's a wash!

    • @updlate4756
      @updlate4756 ปีที่แล้ว

He had the climate on while charging the model X as he mentioned at 5:20 . The initial degradation of the battery depends entirely on Tesla's buffer strategy. It seems they're keeping a larger buffer in the 2022s versus previous model years so it's possible they're hiding some degradation behind the buffer now.
He also tested the least efficient iX m60 w/ 22" wheels against the most efficient base model X w/ 20" wheels. The iX m60 beat the combined EPA estimate by 65 miles, but the iX m50 with 20" wheels has an EPA rating that's 50 miles higher than the iX m60, so it could go significantly further in these test conditions. It's the same battery, so the base iX m50 is more efficient, just as the efficiency of the base model X w/ 22" wheels or the model X Plaid would worsen.
True, range isn't that critical, but Tesla has been touted constantly for its range, so it's only fair to show that it no longer has that advantage. Efficiency is good for charging times, but I imagine the differences in road tripping times for most trips will be negligible... which is exactly the point. BMW is matching Tesla in this segment at a much lower price. Customers definitely shouldn't only base their buying decisions on EPA range. Tesla's EPA range seems to underachieve in real world highway testing, whereas other brands seem to overachieve and get better range than advertised. The established luxury brands still believe in under promising and over delivering, whereas Tesla believes in pushing out the very best numbers on paper to convince customers to buy them over other brands, even if those paper numbers are deceiving.
This test scenario isn't simply about beating EPA estimated range, it's about testing a real world road trip scenario with highway driving that's typically around 70 mph in the US. Driving at 50 mph for 400 miles with the HVAC off isn't a real world test. Hotter temperatures improve aero, but also require more HVAC. I believe the improved aero more than offsets the HVAC use; especially in well insulated vehicles. The ranges he got from these vehicles weren't super realistic since the temperature outside was higher than usual, and he's testing at a higher elevation. Both serving to reduce air resistance. Still, it's fair because he tests all vehicles at this elevation; although varying temperatures has always been an issue when comparing vehicle range tests.
Sure, vehicles should be considered based on the list you provided. It would have been great had Tesla been compared against other brands on those fronts, instead of most EV publications and social media influencers constantly touting the brand and their vehicles on their EPA range for the past 10 years. Ironically, they've also been criticized a lot lately for their real world highway range not living up to the EPA estimates.
When it comes to practicality, comfort, style, quality, and features, the other luxury brands are also very strong. Tesla's main advantages have primarily been infotainment and the charging network. For charging, they should be opening up the SC network to other brands in the US within the next year, so it won't be an advantage any longer once that happens. Other charging networks are also starting to step up their game. EA is advertising new charging hardware; which should hopefully improve their performance and uptime as it replaces the old infrastructure. Lucky for them, their stations don't have all that many charging cabinets that need to be replaced. EVGo has recently begun opening new fast chargers that have been getting good reviews thus far. New BEVs sold today may be driven for 10-20 years, so Tesla's charging advantage may only last 1-2 more years, with the other 9-19 years being pretty even amongst brands.
One major point of comparison you didn't mention is vehicle price. Tesla's offering in this segment is simply priced much higher than most other competitors, including the iX. While Tesla does have some nice features that other brands don't have, and the charging advantage for now, the iX also has some nice features that the Tesla doesn't have. Further, it seems established luxury brands often live up to their luxury prowess better, with things like reduced road noise, better suspension comfort, higher quality materials, better fit and finish. More and more Tesla seems to be taking advantage of its supply advantage while demand is exceeding supply, and while other OEMs have yet to ramp up substantially... but oddly Tesla still has the most expensive vehicle in this segment.

A last question, are you really sure about the rear motor being a PM one. The pre-plaid S had the Midel3 rear motor (PM) on the front and a induction motor in the back to get that much power into the available space, that’s why that model S was a FWD on the highway( ECO mode anyone). So it makes me doubt that the’ end changed that rear motor to a new PM one, losing some efficiency.
