    People mess with me a lot about my decision to SPECIFY the 7.3 on the truck I waited 5 months for. They try to denigrate me for not getting the diesel. Most of these people who have diesels never tow more than I do. They claim mpg is better. Got me there. I average 14.8 overall after 11.500 miles. But I pay a lot less for gas than they pay for diesel. And I don’t have to put any DEF in. And as Colon has shown in his channel - when that diesel emission stuff breaks down it is costly. My 7.3 is smooth as glass and mates up fine with the 10-spd tranny. Most I’ve towed is 13,000 and while I knew it was back there, I never ONCE felt I was shorting myself by not having the diesel. I think FOR MY USE I get the last laugh on this. I like this engine a lot. Oh. And it sounds bad ass. Fun to jump on the pedal.

    • @JohnDiMartino
      @JohnDiMartino 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You made the right decision! Diesels are really only beneficial when your deep into dually towing territory or mountain towing a lot.They just have to many downsides and reliability issues , the 7.3 can do it all and not complain. You can actually work on the 7.3 yourself too, you can see the engine.

    • @allenmarquess5037
      @allenmarquess5037 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The cost proposition on fuel alone favors gasoline too until you drive more than ~400k miles. I won’t drive that much so I would never make back the upfront investment of the diesel engine premium.

    • @austindavis4816
      @austindavis4816 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also those people with diesels aren’t showing you the repair cost they have to pay to keep them pieces of shit running, power strokes more like power brokes, along with what you said most people with diesels don’t actually tow. Just make fun of them when you’re passing on the road with your trailer loaded down and they’re broke on the side of the road with a hazard lights on

    • @armedmariner
      @armedmariner ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@austindavis4816 my buddy has a F-250. Just hit 205,000 miles with the 6.7. His truck is in the shop waiting for parts. Over a month waiting. Some exhaust system problem that caused him to go into limp mode. Repair estimates in the many thousands of dollars. He said he’s going to fix his truck and go find a 7.3 like mine. If money was no object and I’m using my truck to haul under 17,000 periodically then I’m specifying the 7.3 all day every day. In a money is no object you’d think I’d opt for the diesel. But no I would not and the reason is that I don’t want additional headaches. I don’t need to be thinking about DEF and changing fuel filters and checking water separators. I want to twist the key and go. And the 7.3 will GO!!!! like it’s hair is on fire. Or I can putt putt back roads like the old man that I am most of the time. I like my 7.3 F-350. It is my dream truck.

      I agree! Just run the numbers from the initial purchase price and higher cost of diesel fuel plus DEF and higher repair cost and the 7.3 looks better and better. Everyone I know with the diesels is always going to the shop for one thing or another. They are a money pit!

    • @johnzadinya2181
      @johnzadinya2181 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Idk why people act like 50k with hard work and nothing breaking is phenomenal? Maybe I'm used to real heavy duty trucks like the old macks and kenworths but I mean come on any pickup should be barley broken in at 50k. Also the miles don't matter in terms of wear. If you drive only 12k miles a year like in your case, you'll never see high mileage because the wear on the engine is mainly the number of cold starts. Once it's warm it doesn't matter if it's running on highway for 30 hours the wear is almost all on start up and warm up times.

I only drive it local Atlanta trips, 5,000 miles per year, 15 to 30 minute trips across town. Great videos, I have had 6.7PS's for the last decade and a 7.3PS long ago. Never had any issues, but I don't keep them long enough to have issues. Now I have an itch for something different and the only thing that is a must is the ability to maintain speed limits while pulling a 16k fifth wheel. It seems like the 3.73 rear end is the happy medium for normal day to day MPG and towing pull.
    You did a video with the 3.55 gray truck pulling 24k, it was struggling to maintain 55 on the way to Laramie, would the 3.73 allowed you to maintain the speed limit being that you have experience with both.

    • @ColtWR
      @ColtWR  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean the trip to laramie in spots is around 7% grade. The biggest benefit to the 3.73 is closer shifts for the engine. Thus keeping it in the power better so yes it does do a bit better.

I only average 15mpg with the 6.7PS around town and maybe 8mpg pulling, if there is no head wind 9-10mpg but the highway gods do not allow that very often. I just struggle mentally if I were to really only getting 12mpg daily or less, towing I couldn't care less other than don't like stopping for fuel so I would want that 50gal tank. My 2020 f250 lariat 7.3 gas tows like crap. Falls on its face when going up hills. I pull a 8000lb travel trailer and a 14k dump trailer that normally weighs around 10k. Also it has had a vibration since new that the dealer can not seem to figure out. This is the first truck I have owned that has gone back to the dealership so many times. Definitely regret buying it and trading my Cummins in. The looks and inside are nice.

      F250 comes with 3.55 gearing unless you have a Tremor or special order it. This one has 4.30 gearing which puts over 20% more torque to the wheels.

I'd bring it over and we could show GM just how horrible the 6.6 gasser is compared to the Ford. And I'm a die hard GM guy. @@ColtWR Yeah I hate it. I had both the 8.1 and the 6.0. Both were 05 and 06 both were 3500 dually's too. I'd have to say that the 05 with the 6.0 and 4.10 gears was my all time favorite truck that I've ever owned. It seemed to pull just as well as the 8.1 but got a little better fuel economy. I had a dump bed on it and would tow 10k worth of trailer and skid steer and put 6k lbs of top soil in the bed and that truck would never rev over 3,500 rpms and would do it all day around town no problem at all. Best truck ever made IMO.
