- The world has seen plenty of V6 and V8 MX-5s, but Mike is going one step further with his 1998 NB. Resurrecting the long lost 2.0-litre Connaught V10 engine, this new DriveTribe project car is going to be one to remember.

A V10 isn't too big, there are some V12 MX-5s.
Been done before also has a V12 swap.
@@raycyst8037 it's only a six, but the Ford Barra 4L is a massive motor, some one in Australia put one of those in with a massive turbo. Admittedly not much standard MX5 front suspension or sub frame left but it's in and works. Definitely not a street car.

I love it so much that this Connaught V10 is finally getting some time to shine. I followed the progress (broken-heartedly) of the Type-D GT back in the day when it was a concept car.
My current favorite Miata swap is a Naturally Aspirated Volvo 5-cylinder with individual throttle bodies in a NA Miata.
I saw the title and i was trying to imagine them shoving a massive 8L dodge v10 into a miata. This makes far more sense

Mike: "Umm, no the cylinders are actually smaller."
Insurance: "Well then how has it got 200cc more?"
Mike: "We added another 6 cylinders?"
Insurance: "You mean you swapped in a 6 cylinder? Like a Toyota 2.0 6 Cylinder?"
Mike: "No, I mean a V10."
Insurance: "...You did say, MX-5... Right?"
Glad I skipped to the end to make sure they weren't finished so they could stretch it out

Yeah, that's what l thought. It looks twice the size and even though it's only 2 litres, 260 HP from the supercharged version seems a bit low, but it all comes down to weight. I'd like to see a kg comparison between the 2 motors.

It's a unique build, but a V10 that only makes 200bhp...I'm not sure that the extra weight in the front is worth it for such a small power gain.

What is the purpose of having this engine with only 200hp (other than sound)?
You make V10 bc You can rev higher and make powah. This engine should be capable of not less than 350hp.
Came to see if someone else was thinking the same thing. It'll sound cool, and be unique, but a Honda K, LS, or decent V6 would give more power for less.
That's exactly the point. To do something no one else has done. The weight is the same as that Cosworth 4 cylinder block.
@@joshfoley8862 It definitely gets points for originality, if the goal is to be unique at the car meet. But in real life it's a lot more complexity in exchange for a small power gain.
More about the views than final power numbers I think. Will be very cool to watch but not what I’d build.

@@HansDelbruck53 I would guess that you will get neither a roar nor a rumble out of a 2 liter V10, you will likely get a howl or a scream though.

The original Connaught V-10 was supercharged and made 300hp and 274 lb/ft torque. It was supposed to be mated to a hybrid system in a tiny sports car.
I think someone in Australia has done a V12 swapped MX5, but for a V10 this might be a first

Mx5 has never been about outright power, its about the sensation if speed, handling, and being able to absolutely rag it on British b roads.
The noise and revs from this engine will suit it perfectly.
It's the old saying that it's more fun to drive a slow car fast, than a fast car slow. This thing will be an absolute blast.
When I read V10 in a Miata, my first thought was OVERKILL!, but when I saw it was the Connaught V10, I thought BRILLIANT! I'll allow it, so get this thing completed post haste. The only bad thing about this video is the overly loud, intrusive music that blasts the eardrums from time to time.
Curious what y'alls plans are for radiator fans. Looks like a tight fit, but man this thing is gonna be freaking sick! Can't wait to see it finished!
There’s been people who put V12’s in a Miata and usually they put the firewall back to make room. This gives some extra room and with two cilinders less than the v12’s, I reckon they’ll be fine
Yep, trans bell-housing, engine ancillaries, radiator fan pack, cylinder head and timing gear...
So roughly 23 bhp per cylinder supercharged? a K20/24 would make more easily no? Nonetheless super excited for this! Would love to see Phil the miata go up against this.

I drove my 1995 Mitsubishi Delica from London to Africa, filmed the entire journey in 360 VR, have a look. This is a mad Miata conversion
I'll always be amazed how little horsepower you can get out of a humongous engine.

@@Deon2 That's just the dsiplacement, the engine is physically kinda big. It's possible to have low displacement in a big engine or visa versa, E.G: They are 4.0 BMW V8's that are bigger and heavier than a Chevy LS7 (which is 7 litres!)
PLEASE use Mazdaspeed headlights, front bar and chin, trunk spoiler with small tupperware side skirts!! This is a fantastic project!

230hp from a V10? That's... not very impressive.
That car is rotten, like so many other MX-5's. Follow that frame rust up the shock towers and you'll find you can put your hand through the steel. You need to cut all that rot out before you bolt 200hp to it. But you won't. Yuck.

My first rear wheel drive car was an ex-South Wales electricity board Morris Marina 10cwt van. It was rock, much tougher than the 7cwt version, back axle, gearbox, suspension etc.. Brilliant workhorse.

I'm intrigued and slightly aroused at the notion of shoving a V10 into an MX-5. Also, all vids need more shots of the cat!
This is going to be a epic build and the end results are going to be amazing. That little mx5 with and v10 sound track will truly be something else for sure.
Those stickers on the radiator are cool, but your radiator isn't long for this world. Those plastic radiators start out black and turn green/brown as they get older. The more green/brown they get the closer they are to cracking. With the V10 you might consider upgrading to a better radiator.
