I love you guys , this is the only time I wish I didn't smash 3 pints , the effort to keep up with the "technicals" without shiny pop up animations is hard
I was shocked when the bonnet closed first time, I also have seen Phil with his Jag swap drive fine and several LS swapped MX5's but a V10 I wonder if that may be a chassis twister?
I love how Mike keeps getting excited about the progress and minimising the amount of work left to do, and gets quietly shut down every time with how much more there actually is left to do 😂
the secret is to have made progress months ago, edit, then post months later. Nothing wrong with the strat! Glad they’re doing that and not leaving us high & dry until the next episode
Funny, I miss Hammond and May a little less everyday... Not that I wouldn't like to see an appearance, mind you. But I used to be like, "eh, well, it's not them, but I'll watch it I guess." Now I just look forward to seeing Drive Tribe. You guys are doing a stellar job of making Drive Tribe it's own thing, rather than TG 3.0.
I only just found this channel and didn't even know that Hammond and May are involved with it. I'd be happy if they never come back - they talk too much. I like the pace of these Mazda episodes.
Aaah I remember the bonnet closing moment from our 1UZ mx5 build.. This is looking like a great swap! Noticed you mentioned ancillaries like power steering in the last video. The option we went with was a Holden Astra power steering pump in the boot. Really cheap way to power the factory rack.
I feel like somewhere along the line someone turned to Mike after he'd had a few beers and said "I bet you ten quid can't get an S85 into an MX-5" and Mike jumped into the air yelling "Hold my beer", got onto the phone to Dara and declared "How hard can it be!" Dara looks like he's in full engineer mode; one second is as enthusiastic as Mike, the next he look like he's questioning every life choice he's made that led him here. It's cool that with the Connaught engine DriveTribe are enabling actual engine development and with the S85 we're seeing chassis engineering. As someone who works in engineering, I'm totally invested in both projects.
It’s May 25, 2024 and I just saw guys from the Build It Yourself channel finally start a 4v 6.8L engine. Is Drivetribe aware of that build? It seems like something you would be interested in.
go electric power steering , that will free up a fair bit of under bonnet space. Also there's plenty of aftermarket bigger gearbox tunnels available for the mk2 Escorts that could be of use
@@Gentleman...Driver not if it was a programmable one it wouldn't. Also, the additional weight that V10 adds up-front would likely drastically alter the way it feels/handles already... losing some hydraulic weight would no doubt address some of these issues
@@TML34 Seriously? With propper allignment, propper settings to the suspension, the NAs are gold in that regard. I cant even comprehent how wrong your statement is. Sorry, I dont want to offend you.
Do a dry sump for better clearance and a slight HP increase, then do a narrowed corvette rear transmission to better distribute the weight and make the transmission tunnel easier to modify by only needing a torque tube going from the engine back to the rear end and transmission.
Watching this is brilliant. Always wanted to do something like this, but with my health, not a chance. So excited to live it through these videos. Would absolutely love to actually see this when finished.
@@thatbikerboy19 so does it drive? I wonder why they dont make any videos about it. 10 months is a long time especially because we got hyped up so much
Produced by the japanese, powered by the Germans , with a sprinkle of American viper inspiration and finally built by some mad British buggers......... Now that's either one messed up family tree or a recipe for the biggest smile. Well done guys this is mental and I love it!
Great progress! 🎉 i have a suggestion for the cooling! The engine will take upp most of the space in the front. So why not put a big radiator in the boot? You can duckt the air from bellow and out the back. I have seen it on many other builds. 😄
I would respect this series more if they said something like "we took the simplest, lowest stress, no-brainer sports car ever and ruined it by adding the worst engineered, least reliable engine made since the Olds 5 cylinder diesel'
This is THEE daftest, but most interesting engine swap I've seen on TH-cam! I'm genuinely excited to see the finished car. Its going to handle awfully, but it's a BMW V10 Mazda MX5 lol 😂
I'm sure this won't affect the perfect 50 - 50 weight distribution at all. The factory tire pressure of 2.0 bar all around is still fine, it's not like there's an elephant sitting on the bonnet. Likewise, the Scottish accent is a perfect match for the Nigel Mansell simp stache.
I'm not an mx5 fan but I'm loving these videos, shoehorning a V10 in that thing is gonna make it mental. Be interesting to see how it handles once your done, I wonder how the weight distribution will be different. I'd love to see a subtle bump on the bonnet. Nothing to radical but just a nod as to whats underneath it
Not bad. Some 30 years ago our employer (Tom's Tyres in Australia) we put a blown 454 in a series 2a landie & ran it at drags We ran 9.76 at Ravenswood Raceway
My favourite type of car is the one which doesn't look fast, and shouldn't go fast, but just destroys everthing which steps up. Props to your previous employer!
I think you should do a third in this series: VW 2.5 i5 CBT/CBU EA855 (07K). You get the same V10 sound from the I5, but much smaller, much cheaper, much simpler and more parts availability. It would be a "V10 at home" version that us viewers could realistically hope to duplicate.
Ah, just noticed that the I5 was exclusive to the Americas and Middle East. You could still import one relatively cheaply, but may be better to go with the 2.3 20V VR5 AQN/AZX. Won't have the same sound of the V10 like the I5 does, but close, and pretty sweet all the same.
I can’t wait to see the weight distribution and how the handling is affected and the power and torque curve and how the tyres are going to handle. Should be fun. Will be great to compare the 2.0 VR10 as well.
It’s certainly going to be an interesting car to drive..Weight distribution is going to need sorting out as the handling will be otherwise somewhat difficult.. Many years ago someone fitted a D-Type Jag engine into a Austin Healy bug eye sprite (the car ended up in Oz), and just recently a Aussie youtuber has fitted up a Ferrari V8 into a 105 series Alfa Romeo GTV. So i guess putting a BMW V10 into a MX5 is no less daft 🤣🤣
I just wonder how much you are changing the car dynamics by adding a 240kg engine at the front! How are you going to deal with this issue? Very brave of you to do such a project. Can't wait for the next episode!
I reckon a bubble window in the bonnet to show off that V10 would be nice. I would like to show off my engine if it were me. However, I guess it depends if you are going for that stealth look. Surely the noise alone will give it away. :) Can't wait to see how this progresses.

Should of put that engine in an rx8😅
That is about 3% of the job done so far.
I love you guys , this is the only time I wish I didn't smash 3 pints , the effort to keep up with the "technicals" without shiny pop up animations is hard
Like the build, think Hammond needs to deal with Mike's lip slug though 👌😉

As he should be. This has barely scraped the surface of the amount of work needed to get this to work
It must be his first engine swap. We all start out with enthusiasm and excitement. He'll learn.
The frequency of these videos is insane. Thanks for cranking them out.
Agreed, surprised to see one so soon after the first. Loving it!

Yes! So glad!
The secret is making almost no progress over the course of 5 videos

The dog needs his own show. He is a champ.
The mustache, too.
much bork wuuf wuuf
You should convert the engine to a dry sump instead of a wet sump to make the motor sit lower.
Yes!
100% this
Thought exactly the same.
Maybe also find a way of putting the rads rearwards too?
Yes I have seen that a few times with LS swaps.
Great idea, I believe that would make their oil cooling solution more effective as well
i came to the comments to say this exact thing!
Driftworks have one laying around! They could not use it for their E46 V10
When a very skilled engineer says 'It will be interesting' that means its an absolute mile out!
But you just know they will make it work.

I'm so anxious to see the final product! This will be such a beast, a V10, n/a MX5, top job!
Love this build and the soundtrack by LTJ Bukem. This is gonna be a monster of a track car!! Thanks for this great build series, Drivetribe!

They said they didnt want to alter how the MX5 handles and feels. So installing an electric power steering would totally mess up this goal.

you'd need it too if you were putting a v10 in a miata

Hope you change the badge on the back from MX5 to XM5
Jungle is massive, love the music

At 14:00 - the shot of the engine in the engine bay. Holy guacamole … that’s epic. This is going to be fun. Hot Rod ding at its best.
I can’t wait to see this mx5 driving. The sound will be amazing. The rarity of this kind of build out shines the potential performance of it for me.
what happened to this?
This is at Haynes on display and is currently sitting with the v10 block inside the engine
@@thatbikerboy19 so does it drive?

That was probably the best dissasembly montage I’ve ever seen
It’s been 2 years since they made a video about this. I really hope that most of us will be alive by the time this project is finished 🥹
Thkis series has put the channel back on the list of must watch
This isn't an MX-5 with an S85 engine, it's an S85 engine with an MX-5 attached to it.
where is the follow up for this video ?
I love to watch skilled engineers at work
We’ve been waiting nearly a year now for new episodes. WTF has happened?
Love how this garage is trying to do a proper job of it, and not just bollocking it in for a temporary TV project.
I know you ideally want to keep the stock ecu, but check out the ITB setup that B is for Build put on their V10 240z.
They sounded incredible
Big bump for the Jungle montage.

Loving this build.. just hope that there is enough room for sear from the monster transmission tunnel. Going to be tight. But a worthy build.
I love the Miata.
I love V10s.
I'm absolutely stoked to keep seeing this series.
I approve of the jungle beats during the montage 👍🏻

This car is going to be insane! What is also insane is cutting with a grinder with no gaurd 💀.
Was a longer promotion for Carly than the actual build they're doing.......
I know right it's way too over the top.
Fits like a glove. Yep, a boxing glove in a biscuit tin
I have to say I am thoroughly astonished with how ACTUAL little trouble that Monstrous Lump has disappeared in there .
I'm so happy you're using an NA!!!

V10 deathtrap, outstanding 😂

This series is SUPER exciting. What an awesome engine swap!
make sure you put a TON of bracing because even without all the cutting it was gonna need it! shes a beast!
Gunna be a crazy car.cant wait to see the 1st drive out.think the stig "ben" should do the 1st real test drive
This thing is going to understeer like it's on ice. Much more interested in the baby V10 project.
It’s a lot more work(possibly), but a 924 / 944 transaxle would hugely help weight distribution
Great idea, even a Vette C7 or order... Gearing maybe too long with it...
Having the plenum sticking through the bonnet would be very cool , a bit like some of the Hemi cars !!

If Allen Millyard can create a Dodge Viper V10 motorcycle then anything will be possible with the mx5 😂 all the best with your build DT!!
I think the production value is a bit overboard now. I could do without the prep/hype shots. Maybe could save you some time/money?

Looking forward to seeing the mx forward flip when you hit the brakes 🤣🤣
This will be an exciting accomplishment for the car world. Maybe you could get Jeremy off the farm for a day to drive it?
You need to get bad obsessions motorsports involved them guys could fit too engines in there 😂😂😂😂

Looking forward to more. I've seen plenty of videos of people putting V8s in these Miatas. I can't wait to hear a V10 in one.
There's a reason the LS V8s work in MX-5s, they are compact and light, the same can't be said of the BMW V10 lump.
This is the only situation where I would agree “it needs more low”
This is an amazing bonkers project… this car/s are going to be insane ❤
Run a dry sump to get engine lower
I can't wait to see how this turns out!! 😁
What you need to do there is to enlarge that stock hood bulge, for the plenum. It's gonna look SICK.
Loving these projects sooo much!
