I think the number one mistake older women make is getting fillers, botox, and lip enhancements. It does not make them look younger; it just makes them look weird.

If I feel good in what I'm wearing ... I may wear what she said was out!!! I love bright, vivid colors ...some bright prints .... California/Hawaii style, as I live in S. California. Just like Florida ... weather and location make us gravitate towards comfy styles. I like my classic pieces... but clothes make me feel better, regardless of what I may appear to others. I don't care what other people think... but I also enjoyed this video!!! Thank you from a California Gramma ❤

I am a young man, and this video caught my eye because my mother is concerned with her fashion. If anyone is interested, here is my perspective:
nothing makes an older woman look more youthful than what makes her look *strong*, and nothing makes her look older than what makes her look overly *delicate*.
We all become increasingly delicate and fragile as we age, and old-fashioned images of women in all cultures look like they might keel over at any point, with their tiny feet, tiny lips, and awkward skirts. Don't chase this vibe! Those who make the opposite statement, who dress to look confident and practical rather than classy and ornate, suddenly ditch decades from their look. Nothing screams "granny" to me like rhinestones, pointy shoes, square gemstone earrings, or thin muslin. What do they have in common? Bling and daintiness.
So please, don't be afraid to be a bit more punk, a bit more of a rockstar, metal, or goth, if only in the way those styles feel street-inspired, practical and spontaneous. Over 40, an evening gown, chic princess style will consistently betray you to look like Cruella DeVil. Don't be afraid to look dynamic and active instead, because that is the definition of youth!
That is how I see it as a guy in my 20s, who wishes people like my mum had more confidence.
Much love, stay yourselves, you got this!

    • @poppywilde
      @poppywilde 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

Mmm, I think I would have to disagree about the tiny feet and thin lips, what do you suggest we do if these are our natural features? Wear shoes that are too big or take ourselves off to an aesthetician to have our lips injected with fillers? One is ridiculous the other expensive and not necessarily a good look judging by the exaggerated pouts seen on lots of younger women. Surely it's about making the most of what we have been given and enhancing our good points but retaining our individuality and dressing in a way which we enjoy and gives us confidence as this together with a smile and an awareness of how we hold ourselves and not stooping or slouching will go a long way towards maintaining a more youthful appearance. I don't get your pointed shoes comment either as most older women do not wear them, sadly most have opted for comfort before style by choosing the most hideous of footwear!

I have to disagree with many of your points simply because I’m 59 and wear many of the items you say not to. I get compliments on my appearance on the daily. The advice I’d give is 1. Make sure items fit well and give you some shape. Good undergarments are worth it. 2. Be choosy about color. Some look good in pastels and others not so much. 3. Less is more. Take your time shopping. It’s better to have a few pieces that you wear frequently because you look and feel fabulous in them than a bunch of so-so pieces.

Pearls are fabulous - especially real or cultured pearls with a warm tone. It is how you wear them that counts - with bold styling and confidence. In the 1970s a very posh male friend commented on my wearing pearls at breakfast whilst staying at a hotel. I felt I had unintentionally made a faux pas - now, in my 70s I wear my beautiful, short, single strand Pearl Wedding Anniversary gift whenever I like with whatever I like. Agree about the good bra and I love bright colour but occasionally wear a delicate shell pink - inspired by Jane Fonda who always looks fabulous.

I think when I see these type of videos it's easy to automatically feel like anybody who wears the garments that are given as no no's are being viewed as looking old or frumpy... I mean that's what the title says. Don't look old. So it's insinuating that I will look old if I wear such and such. It's so easy in our society today for people to try to bend to everyone's opinion. I mean everyone wants to 'look good'.
Really, I wouldn't have to watch them, but at times I want to see if there's something useful that I could apply to myself. I haven't really found that to be so up to this point. Curiosity got the best of me when I came across this video, unfortunately.

Hi Dez! Great video, I subbed. (I'm 69.) I own several meaningful strands of pearls. My grandmother's, my mother's, my mother-in-law's, and my own, given to me as a Christmas gift. I wear them all with pride, because each has both family and astrological meaning for me. I wear then in many different ways, with different types of outfits. They vary from white to cream to pink. As well, one of my all-time favorite musicians, Bonnie Raitt, covered a song, "Nobody's Girl", which describes a woman who is "as fragile as a string of pearls", and this has multilayered meaning for me going back 35 years now. Sorry but I disagree with a lot of your points. You are wrong to make sweeping statements about pastels. You dont look good in pastels because your skin tone doesnt suit it!! Youve got yellow based undertones whereas Ive got a blue based undertone. People need to understand what group they are in: Summer, Spring, Winter or Autumn. Im a Summer colour group and suit Summer pastels, certainly not yellow based colours that make me look jaundiced! I suit silver jewellery, lovely pastels close to the face and usually a nuetral bottom like navy. It all depends on how you pair pastels too with a nuetral in the same seasonal colour group.. and of course an overload of pastels looks ageing, so you dont do it! Its the same as looking good in a yellow based colour like orange, and wearing orange in the top and tangerine in the bottom. You just dont do it.
Also, a few long strands of modern costume jewellery Chanel pearls, maybe with the double c logo and Camellia flower enamel charms attached look amazingly sophisticated for both older and younger women. Some of these necklaces have cream and black pearls on the necklaces too. They look like the photos you showed of the young models with long modern necklaces, except theyve got pearls instead of beads, or mixed pearls and beads. You should research Karl Largerfeld Chanel modern suits and modern jewellery to get an idea. He designed chic, modern fresh sophisticated and fun Chanel that bears no resemblance to the 1940s and 50s dated pearl necklace outfit combinations.
And patterns do suit people. It all depends on both your body shape (apple, pear, straight etc) as well as weight (light, medium or large boned). A bigger lady is going to look awful in small prints that you suggest.
Also that a line skirt looks awesome on taller women, think a modern winter country Ralph Lauren look... long boots.. preppy top.. the very best shape to skim over lower problem areas, so comfy and utterly sophisticated and gorgeous. Think Ralph Lauren advertising campaigns around 2014..

As a very fair red head of a certain age, your words very much resonate with me. A soft pastel close to my face seems most flattering as an older woman, where neutrals or brights do nothing for me. Thank you! I *finally* parted with my beloved waterfall cardigans at the end of last winter. I do not miss them. It's not easy to find flattering, warm sweaters, and I've had better luck buying blazers and jackets that are shorter and nipped in at the waist and I feel more feminine, dressed and modern in them. I'm retired so I ditched my work wardrobe and in summer I run around in those sort of golf skort things with a polo shirt with a deep placket (cleavage!) or above the knee knit pencil skirts with a fitted shirt - flat sandals (NEVER Birkenstocks!) or white sneakers. I have terrible balance so no heels. I don't want to look like I'm trying to look young because I'm not (young or trying to look that way). But as long as I have a nice figure I want to compliment it - it's been hard won! And I am appalled at some of the stuff that women my age (73) wear.

I loved your video! This very morning, I told a friend that I don't mind being 70--I've learned a lot and wouldn't want to go back. But I don't want to *look* seventy! 😂 So I concur with many of your design points...how to look younger by not looking older!
I'm also an artist (designing and building custom stained glass windows)--so if I do wear a print, it will be an eye-catcher: glorious! Unless it's glen plaid trousers.😉
I've always been small in stature, making up for my size by my personality.
Before custom windows, I did custom sewing. Now I'm ready to turn my fabric stash into a nice wardrobe. I'm sure I will learn something from you that will help. And thanks!

Hi Dez. Yes these things sadly do happen . I have gone much lighter in my hair colour. I spent most of my late twenties till I was 40, with lovely blonde highlights. I have hazel/green eyes so although my natural hair colour is mid brown I could easily go lighter. Over the past 18 months I have gone lighter, starting with balayage. Buy was fed up as my roots always needed touching up and this then lessened the lighter balayage tones . I now have a full head of a mix of caramel and light blonde highlights and I can't ever imagine going back to my mid brown hair. I can say its one of the best things I have ever done. My hair is quite long but I look after it well. I do feel older women can get away with it if they look after it. Great tips mentioned in this video ❤

Thanks so much -sounds like we have similar colouring. I am glad to have finally ditched the dark hair - I do my own roots at the moment, but noticed in a changing room the other day that I'd left a long strand of grey at the back - but actually it didn't really matter as my hair is so much lighter now!

@@beautybydezI have to get mine redone every eight weeks. Its an investment time wise and I have gone lighter throughout appointments. I have a very sensible hairdresser though and in honesty I'm probably as light as I should go now. It's more a Jennifer Aniston head of highlights, but I can see how it could go quickly wrong with someone ending up with far too much bleach . It seems the trick is to go for a base of more of an almost caramac ( the chocolate bar) colour, with lots of lovely light blonde highlights on top. I hadn't realised how aging darker hair could be. It's shocking isn't it xxx

Dark brown dyed hair looking brassy after a few shampoos. ALL white underneath. Roots start coming in after two weeks. When I try to go lighter, it gets brassy looking, and pulls red. UGH! Do I let the white underneath grow out naturally, as in cold turkey?? 😩

I have always dressed in fashion that helps slim my hips and legs, never wear anything overly loose or baggy, and I usually wear black dress pants and a fashionable top with black and teal. I've never particularly liked pearls, although I do have a pair of pearl earrings which I'll wear on occasion. I don't like necklaces as they bother the skin on my neck. I just find it annoying. However, I do love to wear jewelery that complements my clothes, sort of either matching the color or contrasting completely. I've never liked large prints and patterns, and they were very dominant when I was younger. I refuse to wear them. People always tell me I look young for my age. I guess knowing how to dress to showcase my good points is worth it then. I love your video, and I'm happy to see that I've been doing all the right things. And yes, I've always dressed to make myself feel good and so that I'm happy in what I've got on. ❤❤❤ By the way, I'm 74.

Im 73 and I bought this summer an animal print long skirt of a mix of several shades and wear with a plain red or black top with chain straps and ive been complimented on how glamorous I look, of course wearing makeup really helps, seen the 10 yrs younger programme before and after. When i'm given compliments I simply say anyone can do it. Its our choice and I agree with all that was said in the video. Oh and my soon to be 93 yr old mum still wears a little foundation , blusher and lipstick, wears nice clothes but not to young looking and well chosen earrings and necklaces.

You nailed it at every point. Excellent video! I think we owe it to younger women to look our best, which means not dressing in old-fashioned-however-comfortable clothing. When I was in my 20s and 30s, I looked up to older fashionable women; they made me feel less afraid of aging. I sitll remember cutting out pictures of Jackie O. and Maurice Templeton and thinking...I am going to dress fashionable like that when I am in my 50+s. And now, I make the effort to do just that. Videos like this help and inspire!

I've got ever so many strands of pearls, long, double strands, shorter ones, baroque pearls, pearls with gold in-between in white, off white, pinkish, grey and wearing them with different locks that I can attach to them. Absolutely fantastic to any kind of outfit! Here in Sweden women wear them to any occasion and at all ages!

There are stunning big prints if you have the eye for it. Wore a black and white Nina Ricci suit at my wedding in 1968 but wore a pale mauve shirt dress with Chanel jacket with beautiful seaming from Escada at my son’s wedding. I love a twin set and have had many over the years. Still have a very nice red cashmere one I still love to wear and don’t consider “old”. Love pearls! So many chic styles. My number one rule is not shopping in stores that cater to mature women. I'm small and can fit most of the same looks that young women wear, so I buy them! And I agree that large prints look matronly. My closet is almost completely solids, except for a few stripes.
