Such a perfect explanation of a capsule wardrobe. I do this myself - and it has evolved in the years I have been retired. I do have three or four pairs of almost identical black trousers - and it occurred that my reasoning is that some are better quality than others, although none is really high end, and that they need a break between wearings (to retain shape, let the creases drop out, etc.). Light bulb moment - if I had paid more money for a much better pair, instead of less for several, they would stand up much better and would allow me to only take one when I travel - duh! I also own a dress - yes, just one! I bought it in 2020, ready for a trip home, then came the pandemic, and there has just never been another occasion for me to wear it. It is a fall/winter dress, so seasonal, and I also bought shoes to go with it, in a gorgeous forest green suede. Never worn those either! Because now I think it would look better with boots! Totally agree about the trench and white shirt - and sadly for me, a blazer, as unless I have one made, I haven't been able to find one that fits well.
Thanks so much Fi! It is a shame about having gorgeous items we just don't have occasion to wear now. The forest green suede shoes sound fab! I bought a blazer last year but have I worn it - hardly at all! I put it on then take it off again 😉
A big wardrobe declutter was an absolute breath of fresh air. I took everything out, it had to fit, I had to like it, I had to name where I'd wear it, it had to match with other stuff, etc, and I donated more than half of all the stuff in my wardrobe. I could then buy myself a couple of fresh new outfits. I retired recently, had a bunch of health issues, had to buy bigger clothes for a big weight gain. Thankfully my life is improving, the weight is coming off, I had a pick through the winter gear and what wasn't too bad, I've had altered, what was too big, I have just donated (as its just not worth the money for a big alteration)... but I've decided I'm definitely not going back to work and fully retired, so I need another big declutter, take out work clothes, and we are going into our summer here, so time to go through that and purchase a few new summer outfits. I have been quite inspired by you and a couple of other ladies like yourself that i follow. Its great to have ispiration...love your posts ❤❤❤
Thanks so much Lynette! Sorry to hear you've had health issues but glad you are on the mend. And how cleansing it is once you've decluttered - not just physically but mentally too ❤️
@beautybydez absolutely, now I go to my wardrobe, I have it all laid out and I'm not stressing and getting depressed by all the clothes I hated !! (Hung on because I'd spent all that money and not worn them much), so expensive to have altered, cheaper to donate and buy new...sad really isn't it, no wonder clothing is the big land-fill item!! But yes, if I knew how cleansing it felt to do that major declutter, I would have done it ages ago. Xxx
🥳🎉OOOh Congratulations on reaching 10K!!! So well deserved. I have been waiting for this video. I desperately need a closet clean out and tidy up inspiration. My goal is a capsule wardrobe and look forward to your tips!
Clearest video I've ever seen explaining the capsule wardrobe. You also capture the "uniform of the modern woman" PERFECTLY!! Just what I don daily...This is exactly what I needed to wrap my head around the daunting task of tackling my closet clean out! Oh yes. so glad to hear the classic white button down and Trench coat aren't essential for a one's capsule wardrobe... never have worn, never will. I also appreciate how to deal with sentimental pieces💜
Thanks so much Cindy! It was interesting to me to look back at just a few short years ago and how my style has changed - although I still love skinny jeans 😉
So nice - nice, because I love the way you are talking about your own journey. I fully agree with you that not everybody need (loves) the same items in a capsule wardrobe. Trench does not work for me either. I still have a dark blue one and I would have gotten rid of it if my daughter would not use from time to time. As for jumpers mostly to warm for me and if I need more warmth, I prefer a cardigan which I can take off and put on more easily when needed. The soft material of a blouse (silk blouse) looks more flattering than a stiff white shirt. Figuring out what I still need is work in progress.
Thank you so much! I love a cardi, in fact I was a bit lacking in them so apart from the I'm wearing, I've just bought a black cashmere one too - agree they are super useful.
It was a very interesting read. I was so impressed when Next started as they seemed to do the sort of clothes she recommened at prices I could afford...
I created my capsule this year. Best thing I ever did, all in my best colors - I'm a bright winter /jewel tones . I could literally pick out Any top or bottom blindfolded & they all go together. I've taken the time to find my best silhouette & the foundations needed for each outfit. The best tip I have for sloping shoulders is to use small shoulder pads - they give the illusion of a much better posture. New sub, love love your content ❤
Oh that's fantastic, Christine! And re shoulder pads - the personal stylist I used said I should get some - so I have them but haven't tried them out yet - but I will now! And thanks so much for subscribing ❤️
Thank you for this video! I am trying right now to gather a Capsule wardrobe from what I have. I’m looking forward to your future video on modeling and styling the outfits.
Hello, Dez - 10.1K subscribers as I write: congratulations! A very useful - and inspirational - video. Thanks to you, I am determined to complete a go-through of my cupboards (I started a few weeks ago but gave up in the face of too much stuff to decide about) and to end up with only the pieces I actually wear. Thanks again! Ruth
Than you so much Ruth - I know, how amazing is that - can't quite believe it! When I'm doing a declutter, in my study or filming room, I put on an audio book to keep me company ❤️
New subscriber here. Really enjoying your nuanced, well researched, useful and intelligent content. So many TH-camrs targeting over 60’s push clothes that have no real relationship with what’s actually in fashion and can be patronising and overly gushy. Very impressed! Thank you for doing this.
Dez...thank you for your helpful advice, of which I am in dire need! I'm going to start working on this little project today. I especially liked the suggestions for the color palette best suited for our undertones. I'm aware that some colors look ghastly on me. I don't like my (older) body shape anymore, but, this is what I have. That's why I seldom shop... everything seems aimed at youthful girls in the best shape of their lives. 😕 Anyway, I'm going to start. BTW, you look even better now than in your younger pics! Hugs. Rosemarie 🩷
Aww thanks Rosemarie! Let me know how you get on. I've popped some other creators' videos in the description box as they have slightly different takes on the concept which I think are really useful ❤️
They are fab, aren't they! My husband bought them from Atelier VM - they have a concession in LIberty's in London: go.shopmy.us/p-8312494 (affiliate link).
Thanks so much Kate! My earrings were a gift from my husband - they are from Atelier VM, an Italian brand: www.ateliervm.com/. Love your beautiful country - I have cousins in Sydney who I try to visit every few years ❤️
I’ve been trying to put together a wardrobe that suits my retired lifestyle in a rural community and failed big time..I was ordering clothes that didn’t work out and I ended up giving them all away..now I’m back to square one..but with some great ideas from your video on what to look for that works with my lifestyle..age..and comfort..thank you Dez for this great video..fr BC Canada😎
The idea is great. But I love colour so I pick up too much. I love navy but went away from it for years. Recently I tried to find some pants and jackets but I don't see much it's mainly black. Any ideas😂.
Thank you! Let me put my thinking cap on - worth looking at Cos, M&S and Quince who do have some navy pieces - not sure about jackets and pants, though - I will be showing some navy items in an upcoming video soon ❤️
Oh this video has really cheered me up . The I love lime green t shirt 😂😂😂😂. Dez this is all spot on . I’m already on board with all these things but you’ve reinforced the whole point of this capsule wardrobe concept!!!! You look really lovely in this video Dez . Is that a cardigan 😮so flattering on you . ❤
Thanks so much Hilary! I am in love with the cardi - it was gifted and a vid is coming soon showcasing it, along with lots of other new autumn bits and bobs.
Thank you Dez for the free download. I’ve looked at it and it is really what I need. Only thing is, I have NAFLD and my tummy is a funny shape so I can’t wear jeans. I wear elastic waistband cotton or linen trousers. So I’m going to have to adapt to that. I’m 66 btw. 😊 I love your channel, you give out so much information and you show things that are really useful. Thank you for all you do. Debz from Devon UK. 🌹
Debz - love your name! I am actually a Deborah but don't tell anyone 😉 Sorry to hear about your condition - I can imagine you need comfort but luckily there are so many brands making elasticated waist trousers that are fashionable these days. ❤️
For work I kind of have a capsule wardrobe for practicality. For holidays I try and put together a capsule wardrobe for minimal packing. However I kind of have a couple of alter egos that like to dress differently. I have a sexy slightly goth me and I have a slightly more hippy country me and I do like to indulge them at times. I also can't wear wool and look ridiculous in a trench coat and most blazers( I have one that I like- I wore it today). 😊
Dez, I got rid of my entire wardrobe when I got divorced. I just could not bear the sight of any item I had worn with someone who had treated me (and our son) so badly.
I am in the process of decluttering my wardrobe (and other things) because I realise with my lifestyle now I am retired I generally wear the same things day in and day out so have decided to invest in more 'quality' items. Maybe a silk shirt, cashmere sweater that kind of thing. So here goes.♥️
