Heat Wrapping the Mopar T/A CAI on my 2020 Dodge Challenger 1320 Scat Pack to Lower Air Intake Temps

  • In this video I get some Aluminized Heat Barrier to wrap the ducting of my Mopar T/A Cold Air Intake in the hopes of lowering my intake air temps and get them closer to ambient.
    In this previous video • Installation and Revie... I installed the Mopar CAI on my Challenger 1320 making the front hood scoop truly functional. But in my review, I found that intake temps, although lower than stock, were still rather high above ambient. I concluded this was mostly due to the fact that the ducting sits right above the engine and gets extremely hot, heating up the air as it goes through.
    Since I'm stubborn and want to keep the front scoop functional, I figured wrapping it in a heat barrier would help, and that is where we come to this video.

    The heat barrier wrap was a great idea! I've often wondered how to lower temps after making a pass at the dragstrip, and i think this might help.

      It definitely does, especially for bracket racers where you need to try and control as many variables as possible. There's that one guy in the 1320 facebook groups who's a hardcore bracket racer and has his intake looking like a lunar landing module with all the insulation and wrap he has around it.

    Great outcome for a few bucks. The rubber connection tube might benefit from an aluminum dryer vent hose shielding it. Would have to be sealed on the ends and also flexible for engine movements. Aluminum hvac tape could work, but not ideal.

    I found the center scoop intake pre-owned on ebay for a reasonable deal and I'm about to undertake this aluminized tape project! Curious if the tape is peeling or no, hows the adhesive? Properly high temp rated zip ties are expensive, like $80 for a bag of 100! Love the videos man great analysis.

      The only part of the heatwrap that has peeled off is the section I put on the lower airbox where it’s more of a raised grid instead of a smooth flat surface, so that was almost to be expected. The wrap on the hood duct though is still holding strong and I haven’t had to reinforce it or anything like that. It’s been on now for about 3 years I think.

    16:36… All CAI are designed to work best under load. As the air is moving. When the plate is not under load it’s closed more and the car can’t use all the air you are forcing in. So it gets hot.
    The real test is put it on a Dyno before and after your mod.

    • @Scavenger1320
      @Scavenger1320  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Dyno's can be good tools, but IMO the real test is actually on the dragstrip. That said, power gains, if any, weren't my goal here anyway, it really was mostly just because I wanted that front hood scoop to be truly functional.

    • @mikecio1
      @mikecio1 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Scavenger1320 drag strip is susceptible to driver error. Once you have dyno numbers, for actual HP gains ( minimal I am sure) then I feel the track is next for 1/4 mile numbers. I have one on my car also, looks cool and I did it for the same reason as you, make that scoop functional. I thought it was dumb that they put a hole in the hood that is basically a dust collector. @Scavenger1320  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Trust me, I’ve asked some stupid questions myself lol, but yours isn’t. I don’t think it would help much over just wrapping the exterior alone, it would probably be better just adding more or thicker insulation on the outside. Plus doing it on the inside would take away some of the air space and would probably disrupt the airflow. Normally you want that airflow to be as smooth as possible.

    Have you since opened up the passenger side headlight lamp to get more air in and see what that does with temps?

    • @Scavenger1320
      @Scavenger1320  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm pretty sure I pulled that cap at the same time I pulled the driver side one for the T/A intake. I'm sure it helps at least a little bit with the engine bay heat on the passenger side, but I doubt it affects the intake temps at all.

    • @1320_ikimasho
      @1320_ikimasho 7 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      The passengers side inlet, I wish was more functional, because it's not near anything, other than generally cooling off the engine. Because the intake manifold is canted towards the driver's side it would be very difficult to route the passengers side towards the airbox, such as a dual snorkel set up. I've pondered trying to create an extended tube that snakes all the way to the airbox but don't know if it's worth it.

    • @Scavenger1320
      @Scavenger1320  2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@1320_ikimasho I'm pretty sure I've seen one example where somebody tried to do just that, and it wasn't that pretty with the sharp turns and what needed to be done to connect to the snout facing the opposite way. Sometimes I wish we still had intakes that had a top center mounted carb-like throttle body like my old 360 had in my 02 Ram. That would have opened up so many options.

  • @gwaugh7977
    @gwaugh7977 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So off hand did u find out if that helped with the temp after the wrap have u been monitoring it. Also do u think using heat wrap in a hellcat intake would help or hinder it. One would think the wrap would hold in the hot air.

    • @Scavenger1320
      @Scavenger1320  ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't really monitored it since this vid other than looking at my intake temps every so often, but it definitely made a difference with this T/A intake. The lower part of the T/A intake is the same lower box and tube from a hellcat so it would help with that too, just not as much as it helps with having a duct sitting right on top of the engine. The wrap acts as a shield so it keeps the heat from the engine bay off the intake so that the air moving through it isn't getting heated up as much.

  • @Mroswaldo16

    Really coo, good thinking. I like the mod, You would think Dodge would supply a heat shield for that intake from the factory, did you check underneath the hood of a T/A? I'd like to see what they did

    • @Scavenger1320
      @Scavenger1320  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks again! Yeah, I was surprised how hot even just the lower air box gets. Seems like that would of been a small cheap addition for Dodge but I guess they didn't think it was worth it. Not that I know of. But I know there's a high temp flat back spray paint specifically for high heat scenarios like this that you could find at Home Depot. Not sure how well the paint would stick to this wrap but it could be worth a try if you don't like the silvery look.

    • @donaldrobinson3770
      @donaldrobinson3770 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Could definitely explore that option also. Picking the system up for my scat in a couple weeks and from there figure out what to do with dropping the heating issues. Still the best system I have seen for our types of hoods. Everything I find is way to open in some way or another especially being over the bezel.
      You have pictures of what it looks like looking down through the bezel and under the hood how much the top piece has blocked off?
      I’ve been thinking also of opening the passenger headlight for more air flow into the engine compartment to push more heat out.

    • @Scavenger1320
      @Scavenger1320  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@donaldrobinson3770 The driver side vent is essentially completely blocked by that hood duct so there's no heat escaping there. I pulled the passenger side headlight cap off too and that does help. I also removed all the engine bay dress-up plastics too as all that does is trap heat too. Biggest thing I did though was removing the cowl trim, that gave a huge area for heat to escape, but doing that isn't really for everyone as it's really visible and not the best looking, but for me who cares more about drag racing and weight reduction I'm fine with it.

    • @Scavenger1320
      @Scavenger1320  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's hard to say honestly. These cars are so sensitive to any small change in weather that it's difficult to say when an improvement is from a mod or not. That said, I can definitely feel a difference the cooler the outside air is, so it makes sense that if the intake allows that cooler air to reach the engine instead of heating it up first, the result will be more power.

      @@JoeBadra insulating any intake should help for sure. I personally think the TA intake does have some benefit, but have no real proof of it and most people will say it doesn't. I do know the T/A cars seem to run quicker than non-T/A scats and that's really the only difference engine wise, even though Dodge still rates them at the exact same 485 horse, which I believe is more because it wasn't really worth it to Dodge to get a different power rating certified just for one of many small trim packages.
