Buy the RT over the Scatpack? Seriously.. Here's what changed!

  • I give you my thoughts on the current car market and tell you why it's much better to buy a 5.7 liter challenger RT and mod it rather than buy a comparably equipped Scatpack. Times have really changed but the prices on Scatpacks have reached insane levels while the RT remains a much more affordable option. Modifying your RT may be the best approach to reaching Scatpack power without spending Scatpack money.

I think the 5.7 provides a much needed gateway car for young musclecar enthusiasts. Provides an HP number the 60/70s crowd will tell you is VERY respectable, affordable to the younger crowd who are also still building their careers and income, and isn’t so overpowered that the learning comes from crashing. I sold my 5.7 with 200,000 miles on it. Never had a mechanical breakdown but it did have the HEMI tick since day one. It was in a jeep grand Cherokee. I also sold my 2019 charger scat pack. . It was the first car I bought brand new. I was the only guy to drive it. when I went to test drive it, had 2 miles on it. I miss that car, something fierce. If I would’ve known hellcats would’ve went the price that they are currently at I would’ve bought one right then and there. In 2020 when I sold the Scat , I had a chance to buy a brand new hellcat with 4 miles on it for 52,000. But they were only willing to give me 34,000 for my charger which then made with taxes tags and everything came to 62,000. Because I still owed 42,000. When I sold the Scatty another dealer they gave me 40,000 for it on a-trade in for 2020 Durango.

Great video. Its crazy to me that an R/T Plus goes for mid 40s now. I remember buying the same car new in 2014 for $31k out the door. That aside, I agree the R/T is a great car to have if you don’t really care about racing. The torque doesn’t kick in until around 4K RPM but a tune or even a plug-in Pedal Commander can crank up the acceleration and make you feel that 410 torque quicker. I’ve owned the SXT, RT, SRT8 392, SRT 392 and Hellcat challengers, and my favorite honestly was probably the R/T. A great car that gave me all I needed for the money at the time.

The RT doesn't get the respect it deserves. It looks good, is a capable performer, a great cruiser, and isn't targeted by POS thieves nearly as much as Scats and Hellcats. Plus, as you stated as well, it's much more affordable all the way around when you consider buying price, fuel, insurance, and maintenance. Not everyone tracks their car anyway, so most of the high horsepower numbers are never used. Is there really a major difference on regular city streets between 375 and 485 hp in normal day to day driving? Nope, because you can't use the upper limits of your horsepower unless you like spending quality time in jail cells. Sure, it's great to say you have a Hellcat or GT500, but unless you track them, or get lucky enough to be on a very long and empty stretch of highway in the middle of nowhere, you'll never reach your potential with them. For some people it's a bragging rights thing. The RT is a solid car, even without mods.

Basically it was a 3 stages starting with a cat pack and a tune to a heads and cam package and you’ll come out with a little more than what a stock 392 scat would have. 5.7 all day long. It's always been the best value on the lot. Want power? Buy a good cam, get headers, get a good tune, and flipout. Want more? Get your heads done. Port and polished. Increase the valve seats and upgrade your springs. Replace those fuel injectors to something larger. In most cases, you'll still come in cheaper than a Scat.

Dodge opened up the exhaust from the factory on the 5.7 R/T on or around the 2019 model year... It's the same factory active exhaust system that comes on the 6.4 scats... You can notice a huge difference in sound from the 2019 and up R/Ts compared to 2015-2018 R/Ts... The older 15-18 R/T models absolutely need a mid muffler delete, but the 2019 and up actually sounds pretty dam good in stock form...

When you pick up a used RT, the first mod should be getting rid of the open differential. The hellcat 3.08 limited slip is a direct swap and does not require the transmission on the automatic to be retuned. With the 8 speed automatic, this will put you neck and neck with the 6 speed auto of the SRT8 of the previous generation. You can continue to mod from there put the rearend really wakes the car up. I did this to my 2016 RT Plus, it cost about $1400 total and it was money well spent.

It was cool too, and I could have bought another one this time around. Ended up getting the RT for a few grand under MSRP. The Shaker Scat they had sitting next to it had a dealer markup of $5k over. It was tempting, but I couldn't justify it. Even though the RT isn't as fast overall, it actually can put most of the power down. The Scat I had would get smoked by slower cars because it couldn't hook. Both great cars! If you want a new one, better hurry. The dealer I bought from had 2 RTs and 2 Scats, and that was it.

Great points regarding the 5.7. However, if you're really wanting the best deal possible on a 5.7, you have to go the 300 route. Even a newer 6.4 will cost you less on the Chrysler model vs the Dodge. The LX platform is the same used on the Challenger/Charger/300. Also, depending on the trim level, you'll get really nice features. I had the opportunity to purchase a new to me car a few years back. I wanted an FCA product with a V8. I ultimately decided on a 300C with AWD and a 5.7L V8. My 300 has heated and cooled seats, heated and cooled cup holders, heated steering wheel, privacy shade in the rear, Nav/DVD player/USB reader. The Dodge equivelant does not exist. There is no R/T that offered the same features I got on my 300C. I have a car that looks good, runs good, great in the winter with every feature that I wanted and sounds better than an R/T as I have a custom exhaust. The 300's can still be purchased for a damn good price compared to their Dodge counterparts. It comes down to your opinion on the body style.

We're planning on ordering a 5.7 R/T. Just waiting for Dodge to finally update the build and price tool so we can decide on options and color. Apparently a couple options packages were changed or combined for 23

You should go to a dealer soon, what is on the website isn't always accurate to what can actually be ordered. Ie, smokeshow paint is gone even though its on the dodge site. You'll love your ride though!

I have gone to a dealer. Unfortunately they don't have an allocation anymore but I was able to look at what options have changed or been combined. I'd just like a better description than what the dealer website showed, plus being able to see the colors coming back on the display car will be helpful.
The nearest dealer with allocations is about 3 hours away now from the looks of it

@A Stanton1966 hoping not to. Definitely avoiding any dealers with markups and getting the price in writing and signed. If we don't get one, then oh well, we're not desperate.

Great argument. I agree with you the RT is a good viable option. I would drive a stock RT and still have a blast with it. I have a cat and scat and still thinking of getting an RT. One day we will look up and they will be scarce.

Hey Xman, I owned a 2015 R/T and now I drive a 2018 R/T Scatpack. Back when I traded my 15 in on my Scatpack there was only about a 6k difference in base price in the two so I’m sure you’re right especially since there were no markups on the Scats! In fact I even got a couple of k in promotional moneys! 😎 Just glad I did what I did now that I look back on it!

Man, EVERYTHING changed after COVID. Previously the R/T was around $30-35k, & the Scat was like $38-42k. When they still had the SRT 392, which is quite different than what the Scat Pack was at that time, it was around $55k. My '15 R/T actually increased in value last year, according to KBB; but is now starting to come back down. What's scary though is seeing a '15 Chally identical to mine for sale at the same price today that I paid for mine in 2017.

I really don't understand all the hate for the RT.The RT is still an awesome car.Ive owned my RT AWD for about 4 years now and been wanting to upgrade to a scat but changed my mind due to the cardemic of stolen scats. When I do choose to get something else I would probably rather just get another RT but maybe a Challenger.

I just went from a 10 speed mustang to a widebody scatcharger. My main reason was to have 4 doors and not lose that punch the 5.0 used to give me without paying 1K+ car note for a hellcat. So far so good💪🏼

Im on my 3rd challenger. 16 rt, 16 scat m6 and now a 23 rt. The 23s are fully loaded now with scat pack options. Brembos, blacktop package, drag rims. I love it. So much better for me than the scat pack. Ran 13s in both 16 challengers, but they were modded. Stock 23 im running mid 14s. K&N intake and a pedal controller in it now. Track tomorrow. Will see what she does.

I've driven both, would definitely go with the scatpack. If you're looking for a car to mod, I wouldn't buy a charger/challenger, you should look to a camaro or a mustang for builds.

@@doloressalgado3427 what year and what engine? Was it brand new? No modern mustang is going to blow from mods, you can put on to 15lbs of boost on a bone stock 5.0 and it won’t blow on stock internals.

Honestly the 5.7 with active exhaust sounds better than the 6.4. The extra 115hp is wonderful If you put fat tires on it.

I bought my brand new 2019 R/T in December of 2019 . Iy has the manual transmission and enhansed exhaust. I still get compliments of the sound and cranberry color. The car sticker was 27350.00. The dealer added 2,700.00 to the cost which I wasn't happy about but was non negotiable. I still feel I got 1 Hell of a deal compared to today prices. There were a total of 6 for this price. My original plan was to trade up to a scat pack after 3 or 4 years. Unfortunately I refuse to pay over 20,000 for a scat pack. Cheapest scat new I can find is 51,000. I like my paynents under 400.00. Maybe ill invest 10,000 into my 5 7 instead, I've only got 15000 miles on it. Thanks for the info.

My 2020 TA 5.7 had the plus package and all the performance package upgrades. At 51k it was a fantastic car that really moved off the line...mainly due the 3.09 it came with.
