I'm studying to be a lawyer and I once got told that I should get married before I qualify as an advocate because it will be harder for me to find a husband thereafter. Is that all my existence as a woman is reduced to? A wife? Not a woman who is able to be strong, independent and impact her environment? Silly me I thought I'll definitely fail that module, but the moment i started reading her book I couldn't put it down & the more my professor gave us a background story about Adichie my interest for her work grew. In conclusion my final mark for that module in that semester was 80% & starting from then I learnt to respect African authors because their writing is just excellent.

    This reminds me of years ago, back in secondary school when a teacher divided my class into two groups for a quiz. Boys versus Girls and at the end of the quiz the girls won and he said to us (guys) "Why did you let the girls win?" I complained that he was being sexist by assuming that the girls won because we allowed them to win and he called me a woman and insulted me. Funny enough, everyone in class laughed at me, including the girls. Like Chimamanda expounds here, some African women aren't raised to be feminist, and I grew up believing everyone is equal, not just gender but race and sexuality. It is ok for a man to be feminist too, as John Stuart Mill supported the equality of women and the freedom of individuals.

      I'm sorry,but you clearly have no comprehension of what feminism really is.
      Feminism does focus more on women,mostly because women face social injustice far more than men these days,but it's also concerned about men,especially male rape victims. The name has 'fem' in it because it was started by women,but it does not under any circumstance help only women. Why do you think we're so against patriarchy? Because it was PATRIARCHY that teaches us that men want to have sex all the time and therefore actually enjoy rape,as gruesome as it sounds. That's what we're against.
      What you're trying to call me has a name and it's a misandrist,which I'm not. ''Feminazis'' as you'd like to call them are misandrists,not feminists.
      It's not just about legal protection,it's about the way society percieves women.

Going to ignore those that struggle to understand that discussing one problem doesn't eliminate other problems and that a problem can be exacerbated or dimnished in different situations. Privelege, most of the time, is accidental because we can't anticipate where and what we'll be born as but like in all aspects of living it comes with responsibilities e.g. eating to keep on living and being alive is a privilege. So we should seek to understand our privilege and use it for making things better, not worse. Having privilege doesn't make you immune to trauma or discrimnation but in general shouldn't the goal be to eliminate all unjust discrimination on things we had no choice over?

    It seems weird to me that there are women in the comment section, claiming how they are anti-feminist. If it had not been for feminism, you wouldn't have the same rights as you have today. You are brushing off all of the actions done by feminist prior you, who dedicated their lives, to make sure that women got these rights that we have today. Just because you don't experience inequality in your every day life, doesn't mean that no one else doesn't either. What happened to empathy?
    And to the men sitting here complaining about how 'feminism is all about women', you clearly haven't listened to her speech before you commented. Feminism is about equality for all genders.
    Feminism is not flawless because it is made by humans, and humans aren't perfect, but it's the best thing that we have. The best hope for us, who don't want our dreams to be questioned because "Isn't that a man's job?" The best hope for us, who are questioned if we want "career or family?"
    I am a feminist. Not only because I want the same opportunities as my brother has; but because there are so many people out there, men and women, who should be free to be who they are and do what they want.

      ***** Okay let me ask you something: How often do you see male politicians being asked what brand of shoes they are wearing? I'm just wondering, that's all. For the record, I'm from Denmark, where we have a woman as our prime minister, and she is constantly scrutinized for the brands her clothes, shoes and bags are. All of which she pays for herself. Her opponent is a male whom has his expensive suits paid by the party, and has loads of scandals (His name is Lars Løkke... You can look him up if you don't believe me.) and everyone just seems to shrug it off?
      I don't know where you're from of course, but I'll take the liberty to quote an American newspaper, describing Hillary Clinton:
      "She was wearing a rose-colored blazer over a black top. The neckline sat low on her chest and had a subtle V-shape. The cleavage registered after only a quick glance. No scrunch-faced scrutiny was necessary." This article was from Washington Post in 2007, but I really don't hope you'll go as low as to tell me that it 'has changed' because I can easily find other articles to prove you wrong. I'm just wondering if you have ever heard anything like that with a man?
      Women are being scrutinized for what they wear in politics, like it was some fashion show. No wonder Angela Merkel wears the same thing in different colors every day.
      When Theresa May (UK) in 2012 made a mistake in timing of the deportation of Abu Qatada, the main focus wasn't on the mistake in itself, but on her age and her gender - or rather that the implication that she had a feeble unreliable woman's mind.
      You are right that there are female mayors, senators, business owners, governors and whatever more, but if you look at the per cent of them all, then the numbers are ridiculously small.
      That's not the sound of equality, that's the sound of my dreams crushing.

      ***** "there are no laws preventing you, or any other women from being in those fields, so what is the big deal?" I'm glad you ask, because it brings up a very important point: legal rights and cultural rights are not identical. Women have the legal right to walk down an out-of-the-way city street at night without getting raped, but they don't really have that right in practice (and sure, she can prosecute, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen). Men have the legal right to wear a dress without being harassed or even assaulted, but they don't really have that right in practice (again, he can take legal action, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen). Now these are extreme examples to illustrate the point, but the same concept applies. Men and women are treated completely differently by our culture, and probably more importantly: they are raised completely differently by our culture, so having the same legal rights doesn't mean having equal opportunities.

    • @siffpetersen8242

      1. But it is important! It is a problem when half the population has to be rated on appearance before they can get heard. If they can't be heard, how are they supposed to get anywhere? Some manage to of course, but if you look at it statistically, you can see how underrespresentrated women are in places of power. Representation is one of the key stones in democracy, especially if you want to deal with issues that aren't just "rich people's problems" as you like to call them.
      2. Denmark is a monarchy.

    What i find funny is people commenting here that "feminists hate men" or "feminists want to be superior"... I mean, DID YOU EVEN WATCH THE VIDEO? wtf are you here for then? Haven't you got anything else to do besides hate on people fighting for equal rights?
    Ignorance doesn't give you free ticket to talk shit on the internet. Google feminism, please.
    And btw, keep in mind that feminism does favor men as well. Like Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie beautifully mentions in the video, you are all expected to be the one with the money, or to be extremly tough, to an extent that anything as little as carrying your girlfriend/wife's purse on the mall can damage and put to risk your masculinity/sexuality (that was just an example okay)
    Also, yes men are raped. But they are never blamed for it. "What were you thinking? Walking alone at that time of the night in a deserted street? You certainly wanted to get raped, (insert male name here)." THAT'S NOT SOMETHING YOU HEAR, although the other way around is pretty common.
    Also, if men are raped, the shame in assuming it is SO HUGE that most keep it a secret. It shouldn't be, since it wasn't the victim's fault. Again, patriarchy implies that men being raped is shameful. "Why should he admit it, if it probably damaged his masculinity, anyway?"
    Can you see where I'm getting at?
    So PLEASE PLEASE people, get to know a movement before judging it.

      +lalaglaser I know! Seriously. As much as I support feminism because I care about the women in my life, like my wife and my daughter and countless other family and friends, I also know that I (a man) benefit directly from it. Much of what MRA's talk about are issues that feminism has been addressing for generations.
      Also, you suggest "google feminism." Here's an idea for critics of feminism -- try picking up a damn book! I've been reading "Feminist Theory" by bell hooks. I highly recommend it.

      +Greg Pagel thank you! And I only recommend googling it cause I suppose the type of people that judges feminism by it's stereotypes wouldn't care to pick up a book. They are already wasting their time hating on the internet, why not waste a minute to really know what you're talking about?

      lalaglaser Sure. I knew what you meant. The obvious problem with google and the Internet in general is that it directs you to misinformation and simple-minded bloggers just as quickly as legitimate, informed writers. And since many information-seekers are angry to begin with, which sites do you think they'll visit first?
      Here's an interesting thing I read just today in the book I mentioned: She says that many women who have clearly and obviously benefitted directly from the feminist movement will almost invariably distance themsleves from it, and trash feminism. Even though they will agree with all of its aims, point by point. And this was published *in 1984!*

    Men are last to leave a sinking ship, we are drafted to needed wars, we are firefighters and coal miners, we get screwed w divorce, usually pay for wives personal needs and kids tuition for college, depression and suicide bc of this, domestic abuse is ignored when men are the victims and men cant strike back, prostate cancer is ignored, 1in 8 women get breast cancerand 1in 7 men get prostate cancer, but breast cancer is looked on more, 70% of the homeless are men bc women could just marry a men, and finally masculinity is worse than feminitity.

    • @romperstompist
      @romperstompist 8 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      +lexluther512 Men and women are about equally victims of domestic abuse actually. Sadly, men have almost no shelters to go to, yet women have plenty all over the place. As for women in wars and fire fighters, interesting fact, women have lower standards than men for physical fitness for certain positions and promotions in those fields. Breast cancer gets a hell of a lot more funding than prostate cancer, and men have been turned away from free breast cancer screenings on quite a few occasions. Men get screwed a hell of a lot more in divorce than women do. Especially when it comes to being jailed over not paying child support, or having to pay child support or get custody of the children at all.
      Plus it is not until recently, and thanks to father's rights groups, yet this is not policy everywhere, that men can get a dna test to see if they even are the father of the child without the mother's permission.
      Let alone the draft, women can fight in wars. Yes. But they will never be compelled to against their will. Men on the other hand, can be drafted.
      As for the homeless being mostly men, that is because women have various support structures that are not available to men. For instance, they could just get pregnant, and live off of the state. Or go to one of the many women's shelters that are all over the place and get support.

      SystematicSarah
      No, it's not wrong to compare the "oppression" women face. Especially when you are trying to determine which is the more important issue to address, or which is demonstrably hurting women more. Where as you have a bunch of women in the west crying persecution and oppression because a guy sits on a train with his legs spread, or there is an advertisement with a thin woman in it, there are girls in Africa that literally have their growing pubescent breasts beat down with hot sticks, and their clitoris removed via unsanitary sharp stones.
      Where you have women in the west claiming they are oppressed because a scientist wore a shirt they don't like, or there are too few video game characters they like, there are women in the Islamic world that were made to marry older men when they were just kids, and can't go out in public without draping themselves in sheets and being escorted by a man.
      The difference is you see, women are not oppressed in the West. There is just this ridiculous ideology called feminism that does everything to convince them that they are. To the point where they ignore the suffering of men, and go after the most inane innocuous bullshit to validate their persecution complex. Where as in other parts of the world, women actually are being oppressed.

    This is the standard for what a feminist should be. Instead of whining about how mysoginistic and sexist this joke is, or that video game character is, but actual problems women have, and not stupid microagressions. And it wasn't just about women, she talked about how boys should be raised so they don't feel they have to be "hard man" but can be themselves. This amazing woman was clearly focused on equality, rather than female superiority, which is sadly what the most vocal feminists represent. I wish the name was not so tarnished that half the commenters seem to have not watched the video and think it's just another man-hater.

These women are just butthurt that they are the weaker sex, and so now seek to TRY to dominate men, which they will never do because men are naturally the dominant sex, and so will always be the strongest and will always be the leaders both in the relationship and also out of it in the world, in every field man dominate, every invention that makes
      womens lives easier was invented by a man, the only thing that can be
      attributed to a woman is the invention of something entirely useless
      such as the toilet seat, yes i think a women invented that, it was
      something to do with a toilet, anyhow, men have invented everything,
      cars, planes, refrigeration, cooking appliances, men dominate and women
      cannot compete with men, not in a boxing ring, not in a chess match, the
      greatest fighters are men, the greatest chess players in the world are
      men, there is no match for the males physical prowess nor his
      intellectual capabilities, women are there to be submissive to men and
      to follow a mans command, not to dominate, but to follow behind the man,
      and to bring the next generation into this world,...

    • @MrKunal123321
      @MrKunal123321 9 ปีที่แล้ว +68

      Sebastian Caine this is the only reason why we need more feminists in the world. Just bc of people like you who don't see women as equal. Women could have invented many things in the past but they never got the chance to bc even in the past people listened to men and thought women are dumb to invent anything. Feminists don't wanna dominate in any way. They just want to be treated equally like men and I don't think that's a bad thing. They also want opportunities to excel in market and business and politics. They can compete in it with men but our society doesn't see them as compatible. But the world is changing and they are surely getting equal rights. Stop being a dick head and respect women bc she brought you in this world by keeping you inside her for 9 months. Men can't do that and it requires dedication and patience and now you're repaying it by talking crap about them? Grow some balls dude and by respecting women and fighting for their rights won't make you less of a man.

    • @MrKunal123321
      @MrKunal123321 9 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      Sebastian Caine that's your opinion sir and you're entitled to it but I think differently. I completely agree if a man works harder for a certain job then women then he should surely be paid more but for the same work and same amount of strength if the woman is paid less than that's inequality and Sir you are forgetting that women work day and night to take care of their jobs and when they return home they also need to do the house chores and also take care of their kids whereas when men come home from work they are lazy lads and depend totally on women. My mother used to work 9 hrs daily and then also used to work at house to do the entire house chores without breaking a sweat or complaining bc that's what the society has implemented on women from ages. Women may not be equal in strength then men but they surely have more will power and patience then men. You should appreciate that and support women rights bc there are many single mothers in the world who are striving day and night just so they can give their children a better future whereas their fathers abandon them to live with some other women. This is called dedication and they surely are more dedicated than men.

      Jason Bailey wtf? feminism does not encourage these things, they help stop them! you need to understand not teaching boys they need to be 'masculine' would help stop these things from happening. they are all resultant from pressure being put on men to be manly. did you even watch this video?

    • @ItsRuthiee
      @ItsRuthiee 9 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Jason Bailey there is no 'hard wiring', things like mothers being favoured for custody of children come from the way we teach people women are soft and caring and men are the breadwinners, it is because we are taught men and women have different roles. as chimamanda said in this video, there are people who think they are feminists but they are not, these are the people who you are describing, no feminist would want to see their kids taken away from their father.

    • @ItsRuthiee
      @ItsRuthiee 9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Jason Bailey harriet harman is no feminist. again all the things you are listing are acts of people who think they are feminists but they are not. real feminists do not 'paint men as monsters' they point out that society tell men they need to be hard, and not show emotion, and too much pressure is put on men to be manly and dominate as chimamanda says in this video. by teaching all children to strive for the same things, rather than teaching boys to be strong and women to be accommodating the view that men are 'monsters' would not exist. i know if one person who claims to be a feminist says something hurtful it can be hard to see the feminist movement as anything else but try to understand that's not what true feminism is about

    • @ItsRuthiee
      @ItsRuthiee 9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Jason Bailey the radicals have the loudest voices because people respond to them the most, for example youtubers against what they call feminism constantly quote ludicrous statements from 'tumblr feminists' and ignoring the just, fair feminist who want to see men have equality just as much as women. also, if you do truly believe gender roles are set without us teaching our kids them why do you want men to be seen as more maternal? surely that's a contradiction in your eyes.

      I've been raised the same way! Only now, my brother has suddenly started talking to me about how feminists are weak women asking for special attention. He grew up just like me and assumes everyone did. He even asked me to watch some milo yanapolis videos. Whoever that is. Milo seems like an advocate for anti feminism. My brother doesn't realize that that just because our parents raised us equally doesn't mean all daughters had that privilege.
      I just realized this. Thanks for your comment.
