  • Everyone has the ability to build mental strength, but most people don't know how.
We spend a lot of time talking about physical strength and physical health, but much less time on mental strength and mental health.
We can choose to perform exercises that will help us learn to regulate our thoughts, manage our emotions, and behave productively despite our circumstances - the 3 basic factors of mental strength. No matter what your goals are, building mental strength is the key to reaching your greatest potential.
Amy Morin is a licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist. Since 2002, she has been counseling children, teens, and adults. She also works as an adjunct psychology instructor.

Amy’s expertise in mental strength has attracted international attention. Her bestselling book, 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do, is being translated into more than 20 languages.

Amy’s advice has been featured by a number of media outlets, including: Time, Fast Company, Good Housekeeping, Business Insider, Elle, Cosmopolitan, Success, Glamour, Oprah.com, TheBlaze TV, and Fox News. She has also been a guest on dozens of radio shows.

She is a regular contributor to Forbes, Inc., and Psychology Today. She serves as About.com’s Parenting Teens Expert and Discipline Expert.

As a frequent keynote speaker, Amy loves to share the latest research on resilience and the best strategies for overcoming adversity and building mental muscle.

Just to summarize some of the small steps she mentioned that will keep us mentally strong -
    1. Practicing gratitude: Focus on the positive aspects of your life and express gratitude for what you have, rather than dwelling on what you lack.
    2. Comparing yourself only to your past self: Instead of comparing yourself to others, focus on your personal growth and how you've improved compared to who you were yesterday.
    3. Embrace uncomfortable emotions: Allow yourself to feel sad, angry, or scared, and then move on. This will help you gain confidence in your ability to handle discomfort.
    4. Setting healthy boundaries: Establish limits with others to maintain a sense of control over your own life, without trying to control others or letting them control you.
    5. Accepting life's inherent unfairness: Understand that life is not always fair, but this doesn't mean you're doomed to suffer. Focus on creating the life you want, despite the challenges you face.
    6. Making small, positive changes: Start with one small change in your daily routine or habits that can improve your mental well-being, such as replacing a sugary drink with a healthier option or incorporating a few minutes of exercise into your day.

Every person goes through worst experience in life. It is different from person to person and varies People can have one or multiple bad experience to them.
When i said worse experience. I think about life put u down to the ground where u think u cannot seem to go back up. That is a way of life testing us if we can make it back to the path again.
Some people fail - those are the people who die than to live , commit the act of dying and succeeded and some people survive and found their way back in life.

      Run to Jesus!
      Trust in Him alone!
      +
If you have defected from God then read these Scriptures: (Lost Sheep, Luke 15:1-7 - Lost Coin, 15:8-10 - Lost Son, 15:11-32 - Rich Man and Lazarus, 16:19-31) Jesus is calling you back home, read His word, believe and repent. Saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone!
      +
The world is racing toward "AMAGEDDON" !!! And people need to get right with the Lord!
If you have not read the books of (Daniel chapters 7-12), (Ezekiel chapters 37-39) (Matthew chapters 24:1-51 + 25:1-30), (1 Thessalonians chapters 1-5), (2 Thessalonians chapters1-3) and (Revelation chapters 6-19), now would be a good time. They will explain a lot about what is going on right now!
These books will cover the "Wars" about to come, the catching up / the blessed hope, World judgement, hence the Tribulation and the Great Tribulation! These books will also be the most ominous and scary for the unbelievers and the most exciting and uplifting for those who believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior!...
It is my hope and prayer that people would repent and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ before all these things take place, because it is going to be very, very scary if you do not and you decide to wait and see what happens.
      +
May the Lord encourage you to seek the truth, in Jesus' name. Amen and Amen.
      +
All glory be to God. Amen!

Amara, Avoid comparing yourself with anybody or anything. Practical steps are needed to reprogramme your mind. Reduce negative thoughts to relax. Its quite simple with a little determination. Your breath is directly related to your mind [brain] causing negative thoughts-anxiety For a relaxed life sit on a chair, back erect, hands on lap with palms upwards, eyes closed, be still and observe your natural incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for around 10-15 minutes or more. Let thoughts come. Slowly negative thoughts will reduce and relax the mind. Whenever you are free during the day or night before sleep sit or lie down still for a few minutes and observe your breath. Being still reduces negative thoughts. Do the above practice daily to have a good life. Best wishes and prayers. Shyaaam Sir. -Counsellor.

Honestly, there was something about what she said that inspired me to change. In a way: “Stop throwing a pity party”, “Life isn’t fair and no one owes you anything”, “You are the main character of your story and you can make that story whatever you want it to be about”. I think she had it tough and to see how everything worked out for her at the end (to some extent) gave me the practical perspective of that when one door closes, another opens. I started journaling with check list with small daily tasks, read books and changed small everyday habits - which lead to me having a very different daily life than before.

Mentally strong people have healthy habits. They manage their emotions thoughts and behaviors in the ways that set them up for success in life check out these things that mentally strong people don't do so that you too can become more mentally strong.
    1. They don't waste time feeling sorry for themselves.
Mentally strong people don't sit around feeling sorry about their circumstances or how others have treated them. Instead they take responsibility for their role in life and understand that life isn't always easy or Fair.
    2. They don't give away their power.
They don't allow others to control them and they don't give someone else power over them. They don't say things like "my boss make me feel bad" because they understand that they are in control over their own emotions and they have a choice in how they respond.
    3. They don't shy away from change.
Mentally strong people don't try to avoid change. Instead they welcome positive change in are willing to be flexible. They understand that change is inevitable and believe in their abilities to adapt.
    4. They don't waste energy on things they can't control.
Did you hear a mentally strong person complaining over lost luggage or traffic jams?! But Instead these people focus on what they can control in their lives. They recognize that sometimes the only thing that they control is their attitude.
    5. They don't worry about pleasing everyone.
Mentally strong people recognize that they don't need to please everyone all the time. They are not afraid to say no or speak up when necessary. They strive to be kind and fair but can handle other people being upset if they didn't make them happy.
    6. They don't fear taken calculated risk.
They don't take reckless or a foolish risk but don't mind taking calculated risks. Mentally strong people spend time waiting their risk and benefits before making a big decision and they are fully informed of the potential downsides before they take action.
    7. They don't dwell on the past.
Mentally strong people don't waste time and dwelling on the past and wishing things could be different. They aknowledge their past and can say what they've learned from it. However they don't constantly relieve bad experiences or fantasize about the Glory Days. Instead they live for the present and plan for the future.
    8. They don't make the same mistakes over and over.
Mentally strong people accept responsibility for their behavior and learn from their past mistakes. As a result they don't keep repeating those mistakes over and over. Instead they move on and make better decisions in the future.
    9. They don't resent other people's success.
Mentally strong people can't appreciate and celebrate people's success in life. They don't grow jealous or feel cheated when others surpass them. Instead they recognize that success comes with hard work and they are willing to work hard for their own chance at success.
    10. They don't give up after the first failure.
Mentally strong people don't view failures as a reason to give up. Instead they use failure as an opportunity to grow and improve. They are willing to keep trying until they get it right.
    11. They don't fear alone time.
Mentally strong people can tolerate being alone and they don't fear silence. They aren't afraid to be alone with their thoughts and they can use downtime to be productive. They enjoyed their own company and aren't depend on other for companionship and entertainment all the time but instead can be happy alone.
    12. They don't feel the world owns them anything.
Mentally strong people don't feel entitled to things in life. They weren't born with a mentality that others will take care of them or that the word must give them something. Instead they look for opportunities based on their own merits.
    13. They don't expect immediate results.
Whether they are working on improving their health or getting a new business off the ground mentally strong people don't expect immediate results. Instead they apply their skills and time to the best of their ability and understand that real change takes time.

I watched halfway through this video and her words really inspired me. I realized that it’s unhealthy how I’ haven’t talked to my boyfriend about how toxic our relationship has gotten lately, and it’s been so hard on me. So I paused the video and sent him a text and we finally talked about it, after almost a month of me overthinking this everyday. We broke up. And while that’s sad, it’s also liberating. Because now I can finally move on. Thank you so much for this video and for your words, they really helped me 🙏🙏 also sending big hugs to anyone that’s going through a rough time right now

I divorced an abusive narcissist in the midst of it all. They say what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger. That isn't always true. It's how you face it and process it, and move forward. That's just human psyche being human psyche. Nothing to do with being strong or not mentally. Other people tolerate losses better than others. It really just depends on how badly that particular psyche takes those things. It is non-voluntary action of a mind. Some are better in taking personal losses than others. honestly...We all struggle with petty things :D The key is to accept how you feel, take a deep breath and then move on. Haha the number of times a friend's petty remarks have brought me down is amazing lol! but I accept how he made me feel, take a deep breath and move on. Everyone experiences tough situations differently, the important thing is not to be hard on yourself for feeling how you feel. When you've accepted your feelings, it is no longer a huge, psychological wrestler and you are free to allow your brain to work out solutions.

Summary: get rid of bad mental habits ---->
    1. Self pity (exaggerating problems)
    2. Victim mentality (thinking that ppl/situations have the power to hurt you, instead of thinking how you can choose to respond)
    3. Expecting that life is fair (that if you work hard, you'll find success)
Developing mental strength is just like developing physical strength. Cultivate good mental habits (healthy food) and get rid of bad ones (junk food). Practice daily to train your brain (gym). Start small. Keep going.

Lying on the sofa here in England with a throbbing inner ear infection. It's not even a fraction of the pain Amy talks about, and physical pain is always easier than emotional but I'm realising how pain of any kind can be a teacher. I had something of a private pitty party yesterday, but today, and with the help of videos like this I recognise that I can actually use the objectively unpleasant experience I am having, not only to be 'not as bad as it could be', but actually net positive. What if this agonising pain that has arbitrarily been inflicted upon me for a few days acts as a catalyst to show me a whole new way to deal with negative ocurrences in life, which of course can and will be much worse than this one?
Three or four days of pain and sickness would be a very cheap price to pay for a complete change for the better in my mindset when it comes to dealing with future challenges. Imagine if my current discomfort is actually equipping me with essential tools I will need in the future when I get a harder test, such as I or a loved one getting a terminal diagnosis?
I got my infection, most likely, from the local water authority and its tendency to outlet raw sewage into bathing water during heavy rain (got ill the day after swimming at a local beach). But in 24 hours Ive gone from abject hatred of this occurrence to gratefulness for the opportunity it is potentially affording me for improvement. While I'm not minded to pen a letter of thanks to Southern Water, I do feel like this experience, along with the useful content I am consuming during it is moving me towards greater enlightenment, which is something I can be grateful for.
We cannot control what happens to us, but it is entirely up to us what we choose to do with it.

To become mentally strong we must maintain mental hygiene: get rid of bad mental habits like complaining, envy, destructive self attacks and adopt healthy mental habits like gratitude, compassion and positivity.
I love when you shared that you needed to monster your mental power and to use all the knowledge about mental strength in order to heal: knowing how to overcome trauma and actually living it are two different things.

My own mother died when I was 11 years old. I am now 21. For a lot of my life I’ve been denying the mental anguish that comes with such early loss. It is extremely detrimental to deny the past and keep taking life day by day. I’m learning to accept the past in order to appreciate the present and plan for the future. Mental strength can’t come in a moment. Everything takes time and focusing on myself has been the only way that I’ve been able to find peace. I hope everyone watching this video can find the peace within themselves too.

@@voguexperimental Everyone's mother is different. My mom doesn't take money from me but she does emotionally abuse me. I personally feel like she'll always see me like a failure...which is why the title of this video caught my attention. I want to be strong...but it's not been easy. Even though my mom has said hurtful things to me and makes me feel not good enough I still love her for at least being there for me and not just kicking me out. One time she fainted and I freaked out thinking I lost her forever. I want to be there for her till her time ends.
The comment I put was a simple message to value the good that you have. I know I'll miss her presence when her time is done. I'm sorry if my comment offended you. It was not my intention to hurt anyone here. I don't know what would be the best answer for your question, but hopefully someone can provide a good answer for you here. Mothers can get on our nerves, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be shown some love 😔 maybe you can try telling your mother how she makes you feel and if she doesn't listen to you, you can try finding other ways. You don't need to stay hurt forever.

@@mabelidove6813 I love how you think. My mom died when i was 17yo. Everybody should appreciate what their mother does for them because being a mother isn't an easy thing. And as long your mother loves you and cares about you, you should show her respect, hug her, tell her you love her because those small things you do really make her feel good and makes her appreciate you more aswell. Those small things fixes alot of stuff... Death is so unexpected so take 10 minutes of your day to talk to your mom, tell her nice things or talk to her about what she likes to do, what her favourite color is, what was the funniest thing that have happened to her when she was your age... These small talks will mean alot when someone is gone. Because when someone is gone you can't ask them anything.

My mom killed herself almost three years ago… and it seemed like my whole life fell apart. But in her death I started self seeking and realized that bc of everything I’d endured from such an early age, that my life was already on its last seams that just snapped the last few there. These have been the biggest things I struggle with. I am trying so hard to get there and it’s so much easier said than done. But I think if I never give up it might just maybe actually get there, to that place I need to be to e mentally stable. Just keep me in ur prayers y’all. It’s hard to unlearn all the past and our learned protective behaviors and open urself up to others and be vulnerable and supportive and caring when all you’ve ever known is guarding and violence. I just want to be better and be different than all I’ve ever known. And I’ve felt so helpless falling into the same things my parents struggled with and did. But I think knowing this and working to change it is the first step. I have taken it, I just need to keep stepping and maybe I can have the mental stability that she speaks of that I crave so badly.

I have had ocd for about 4 years now, it’s mentally drained me the last 3 and a half years. But in the December of 2021 I decided I need to find a cure, a way out. I discovered this therapist on TH-cam that specializes in ocd and anxiety. He helped me threw my problems it all began with me really fighting against my thoughts, by agreeing with them. This might sound weird but it helped me. I felt stronger mentally, I kept watching him and I’m almost free of my ocd! I just have to keep fighting and it all started with me self reflecting, If I wanted the rest of my life to be like this. Keep fighting what your fighting don’t give up. It gets better eventually but don’t think that the world should feel sorry for you. You have to be strong so keep fighting!🙏🏾🤝❤️

Thank you for sharing your story and helping us move on from our losses. It is so true that self-care for our mental health is as important as caring for our bodies. Although it does take years to develop healthier habits, it only takes 7 days of repetition for a good start to develop the habit you would like to have. I have proven this true when I chose not to be late for work anymore. Each day I clocked in early I would mark it on my calendar. If I came in late during the 7-days, I would start over and go back to Day-1. Eventually, I was clocking in early each day for the next 90 days. Which became 6 months, then a whole year. Start with small steps. One day at a time. Each day is a new beginning!

I'm a 24 year old guy that has never been in a relationship and when I do see other people my age that are in relationships, engaged, or married, I automatically put them on a pedestal. They see you and think "I wish I had ... like Eye of Horus", "I wish I was as ... as Eye of Horus", "I wish I did this and that with my life as Eye of Horus". It always works like this. We have many positive qualities, but we can't have all the possible awesomeness in our lives because that would be impossible. So we tend to think that someone who is slightly more awesome in just one aspect, that we're obsessed about at the time, is some kind of mysterious perfect being. I didn't have a college degree but I was selective in my jobs and ended up with a great resume. In less than 25 years my husband and I owned a real estate office, I was a realtor, broker-owner and certified appraiser. My husband retired from Air Force and owned a trucking company. We never expected help but decided early own it was up to us and we put our girls through college and owned several pieces of real estate along with an 80 acre farm and a 40 acre farm. We were a good partnership and never looked back. We made it because we believed we could and had a lot of faith in God. I felt Blessed and still do.

There is no shortcut to being mentally and emotionally strong. No techniques. No meds. No counselling.
The only way you can get mentally strong is to endure. Endure pain. Endure loss. Endure disappointment. Endure failure.
The most important factor is TO BE WILLING to get through things. If that will is not there, NOTHING can help you.
But when you are willing and have the patience to endure and come to the other side ( the side where you are getting over it ) you will realize it didn't kill you. Or break you. If you can see that and realize that, you will also learn that you can in fact deal with things and that is when you get to know you have been and can be strong. It isn't so bad.
The brain really does fade away memories. How much do you remember of your college farewell ? Or your first date ? If you think about it, you will realize that you actually don't recall too much about it. And just like the good things, the bad things also fade.
That moment of decision when we have to decide whether to hang in there or to give up is the most crucial. The choice we make at that point is what decides our path forward.

Excellent speech very good information I don't do do social media but I'm not sure why you started with that but the grief and the fact that even though you're a therapist going through it yourself is different. Something I would like to hear more about is when you cannot forgive yourself. And how to keep functioning it's very hard to function. And thank God you didn't say call 911 get help or call grief counselor because all they do is call the police and make things worse. Yes I could tell you're very heartfelt and genuine thank you

Self pity is the worst it makes you weak, love yourself but dont magnify your misfortune, count your little blessings! Happiness starts from there. Always REMEMBER! GREAT DESTINY REQUIRES HARDSHIPS & OBSTACLES, THE MORE YOU SUFFER AND GET THROUGH THAT, YOU'LL BE THE BRAVEST AND STRONGEST! GOD BLESS YOU ALL💙

I could not believe she was about to say her husband died too.
This is why I watched this video though.
I know that life will throw us so many trials and tests and we have to be mentally strong. At this point in my life I feel so fragile which makes me even more scared, because I feel like I’ll fall apart at the slightest challenge or loss. I can handle what happens to me, but not those I love.
