    Edit : the whole point of my comment is that in Islam, a guy averting his gaze is just as important as a lady covering up.
    Averting the gaze away from the tempting things have been mentioned many times in Qur'an. Whether it was for men , or women.
    So, when people blame harassment on women (which happens in all countries, but now I want to focus on the Muslim ones) it is not because of religion, but rather because of society.
    I believe that we have to teach our boys how to lower their eyes as much as we teach our girls to cover up.

      I don't mean to raise any debates with this comment, what I meant by it is that just as it is important in Islam for a woman to cover up, it is important for a man to hold his gaze.

      Rosalind’s comment is very true. I wish more folks would read the Q’uran, if only to understand what it actually says vs. what has been interpreted incorrectly by people with an agenda. As Rosalind’s quote demonstrates, men have responsibilities, too. And that equality of responsibility is important to acknowledge, but the fact that the burden of punishment has been placed for many generations much more on women than on men is important to address so that we begin to actually fix it.

Or that men worship in the primary part of a mosque and the women in the secondary parts of a mosque? Don't you think it's only fair that men and women dress alike? Perhaps the men should cover themselves much as the women do? Don't you think it's strange that there are 'women of the right hand', but no 'men of the right hand of a woman'?

    From an Islamic perspective, the concept of the hijab is rooted in the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The hijab, or modest dress, is not just about clothing but embodies a deeper commitment to modesty, self-respect, and spirituality.
    The primary verses that address the hijab in the Quran are found in Surah An-Nur (24:30-31) and Surah Al-Ahzab (33:59). In Surah An-Nur, Allah commands both men and women to lower their gaze and guard their modesty. Specifically, in verse 24:31, women are instructed to draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their close relatives and those specified by the verse. This teaching emphasizes modesty in both dress and behavior.
    Surah Al-Ahzab (33:59) further reinforces this by instructing the Prophet to tell the believing women to cover themselves with their outer garments when they go out. The intention behind these instructions is to promote modesty, protect women’s dignity, and prevent unwanted attention. It is important to note that the Quran doesn’t specify the exact style or type of covering but rather focuses on the concept of modesty and the idea that a woman’s beauty should be reserved for her family and not displayed to strangers.
    The hijab is seen as an expression of a woman’s faith and a symbol of her strength and independence. It signifies the choice to be recognized for her intellect, character, and contributions rather than her physical appearance. However, interpretations of the hijab's practice and significance can vary widely within the Muslim community. Some believe it is mandatory for all Muslim women, while others see it as a personal decision grounded in faith and understanding of the Quranic message.
    The key message is that the hijab, in its essence, promotes modesty and respect. It is not about suppression but rather about empowerment providing women with the space to define themselves on their own terms. Islam emphasizes that the heart’s intention and piety hold more weight than external appearances. The hijab, therefore, should be seen as a choice made from understanding and conviction, rather than as a mere obligation.
    Ultimately, the Quran’s teachings about the hijab are about fostering respect, humility, and self-assurance, allowing Muslim women to feel empowered and comfortable in their own skin while observing their faith.

And if a heavily laden soul calls [another] to [carry some of] its load, nothing of it will be carried, even if he should be a close relative. You can only warn those who fear their Lord unseen and have established prayer. And whoever purifies himself only purifies himself for [the benefit of] his soul. And to Allah is the [final] destination.(Quran 35:18)

    As a Christian, one of my favourite verses of the Bible is Matthew 5:29, where Jesus says in reference to a man looking at a woman lustfully "If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and throw it away". Instead of telling women to cover up he attacks the men for their lustful thoughts! Having watched this video now, it seems as though Islam has a similar approach, which I never thought before. Although the women were told to wear the garment to stop themselves being harassed, it was aimed at the men who were to blame, and the women were merely being protected, not blamed for dressing immodestly.

    Why are most people missing the main point. She is talking about women empowerment through her own decisions. It's not about whether she has to wear the hijab or not. It's as to WHY. The hijab I wear is empowering to me. It gives me a sense of identity. Mostly because I chose it. For some other cultures, like described in the video, it's demeaning. So before going off and insulting people, understand their reasoning first. Please.

    • @abdel.527
      @abdel.527 6 ปีที่แล้ว +125

      They reason why you so called chose to wear it. Is because you where educated in that culture in that tradition. And the main fact is that you chose to wear it IS because you think it is decreed by god and think is a part of the islamic faith.

    • @Angel-mh8qb
      @Angel-mh8qb 6 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      @@abdel.527 Ok, that is ALSO true. If I thought it deteriorated my worth I would have not wore it, but that is not the case. In this video she is attacking the subject of women empowerment and not if we have to wear the hijab. Besides, why should I have to wear what others wear? I am allowed to wear what I want without fear.

    • @Angel-mh8qb
      @Angel-mh8qb 6 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      @Bjørn Wikan And I have nothing to say against that, but people shouldn't afraid to put it on either. Fear can also be a type of oppression. So I guess my point is it's different from person to person. Nobody should tell you what or what not to do. You're happy with your religion please continue with it, if your not happy with then do anything other than changing it and tell everybody to change as well. Sometimes it's the culture's fault, it is oppressing woman and not the religion itself, because as she said in the Quran the hijab is only mentioned 3 times.

    • @Angel-mh8qb
      @Angel-mh8qb 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @Bjørn Wikan depends on where you live and what that hat means to that culture. This is where I said it's a culture's fault and not a religion's fault. Their is nowhere in the coran that said "a woman is to be killed if she does not wear a hijab" nowhere. Religion is a set of rules, that is all. Per example, take a constitution. A constitution is a set of law and rules. If a politician misuses it by twisting the meaning of it's words, is it the constitution's fault or the politician's?

    • @zodh5700
      @zodh5700 6 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      @Angel 10 The problem is, people aren't afraid to put it on. People are afraid of what will happen to them when they take it off. _That_ makes it a symbol of oppression.
      Regarding your point about the constitution: yes, it is the constitution's/constitution writer's fault. Having a vague constitution is basically asking for political misinterpretation and conflict. (A politician does nothing wrong by using those vague words to further his/her argument; that's basically his/her job.) Even then though, because it _is_ a human who wrote the constitution, we can forgive him/her for making mistakes. However, your perfect god somehow did not foresee how his vague words could be misinterpreted and used to cause harm to millions of people. (It really makes the Quran seems considerably less reliable, in my opinion.) In this case, the dominant interpretation would be the representative one. Thus, because the current dominant interpretation of Islam worldwide requires women to wear a hijab, it is inherently oppressive in modern society.

    • @uhhuh2354
      @uhhuh2354 3 ปีที่แล้ว +172

      We do tell men to respect women. Men and women should both lower their gaze and not engage in physical contact to respect each other's boundaries and proprietary.
      As for only women wearing hijab, it's meant as protection and empowerment for us. Imagine a woman going to the gym in yoga pants and a sports bra. Although the ideal situation would be for men not to gaze lustfully upon that woman, the realistic scenario would be that more likely than not, that woman would have unwanted onlookers gazing at her disrespectfully. By wearing the hijab, we are taking away men's ability to sexualize our bodies as a commodity or in other words objectify us. You can't really sexualize something that you can't see.
      Another benefit of the hijab for women is that by hiding our beauty, we would be certain that a potential spouse isn't marrying us for our looks, but who we are as a person. After all, looks don't last forever, and when you get married to someone you want that relationship to last till death; not until your beauty fades or you get older.
      In addition to that, I also want to add that men are also required to wear a hijab in a certain sense. Everything from their bellybutton (i.e. navel) to their knees has to be covered.

    My personal experience is when I choose not to wear a hijab around the people who do. They judge me as being wrong, not modest and less than them which I don't agree with. What you wear is a part of the many wisdom. But meanwhile, it is a big lifestyle change, especially for people living in a non-Islamic country. Overly imposing this rule before all the other verses is forming a barrier for women like me to get closer to Quran. Hence, voices trying to investigate and elaborate more on this context are essential.
    Mutual respect for garment choices is important. For that, we need to be more open-minded and dare to listen to different interpretations.

So they misunderstood and you are the one with the correct interpretation of that verse. Yes, Allah did not detail in the verse how the cloths should be worn exactly but the Hadiths did (i.e for a Muslim woman she should be cover completely except for face and hand). Since you choose to ignore the prophetic interpretation of the hijab verses, choose to disregard the scholarly opinion and challenge basic Islamic ethical grounds, that's left to you.

      They applied Reasoning…We need to be clear that Allah didn’t take responsibility to protect hadith…he only took responsibility of Quran…Hadith can be wrong and there’s nothing wrong with that given that Scholars had to use reasoning to separate fake and real ones and that god didn’t took responsibility for its protection…More over the practice of ijtihaad is very important to know which one of the Hadith is more suitable pf today’s era… No one is changing the basic ethics of islam because Hadith isn’t the basic ethic of islam, it’s Quran and the verse in Quran is ambiguous in interpretation…Hijab wasn’t ever mentioned in the Quran…for examples ; There are Hadits which proved that Prophet Muhammad barred women from going to Cemeteries but he himself allowed it later because times were different than the times it was barred in…
      That’s why Quran is meant to be understood while keeping current societal issues in mind and not merely by “sacrificing modernity”…

      Furthermore men during the prophet's time as well, covered their heads. Going by your logic, men have to wear the headcovering as well even though it was cultural not part of the religious obligation.
      Lastly sahih bukhari isn't actually sahih. While there are ok hadiths in it, there are many that are false. Watch mufti abu layth's videos such as bukhari gate part 1 and 2, his debate with dr abdul majid and you'll see the answers

      If you go to the verses mentioning the hijab in the qur'an and literally just using google translate to translate. You will find the translation being on forms of direct statements explaining what the hijab is and how it should be worn. It is because she is indian and probably doesnt speak the language that she mistranslated the verses. Go to any arab linguist and they will give you better translations than her...
      She is also taking advantage of being on stage to tarnish the reputation of islam, regardless of the fact that muslims will also watch this and confirm that she is bullshiting everyone. The ones that believe her obviously have no education about islam.

    The Quran emphasizes modesty and protection for women in Surah Al-Ahzab (33:59), instructing them to draw their cloaks over their bodies to avoid harassment. This directive is not limited to Prophet Muhammad's relatives but extends to all believing women globally.
    Similarly, Surah An-Nur (24:31) underscores the importance of veiling, the Arabic version of the verse uses the term "khimar" which refers to a head covering, commonly known as hijab, and advises covering the chest as well.

      Hello! :) I find that there is some misinformation in this video and as a muslim feel compelled to point it out. Quran explicitly states in surah nur that women should bring their khimar (headscarf) forward to cover their bosoms as well. It does not say take off the khimar. And for the wives of the prophets an additional covering was ordered: the hijab. A literal screen between them and non mahrams. Hence a headscarf covering your bosom is obligatory and it does not take away from any muslim woman’s rights. It actually prevents them from being sexualised and hence makes them feel more confident in their bodies without being gazed at in odd ways. I found this true for myself when i started hijab as well! No more body dysmorphia! :) I hope I was able to clear some misconceptions, and pray that I am not the cause of misinformation either. Afterall, Allah knows best. :) Have a great day friend xx

    As always, the worst part about any religion is not in the faith or the principles of it themselves, but in how some members choose to manipulate it in favour of their personal interests (or political reasons). Just like Christians have invented along history a lot of rules that were never in the Bible on the first place to justify things like homophobia, misogynism, etc. If you want to believe in something that's fine, but it doesn't mean you don't have to be critical about it as well. Question yourself wether something that you have been taught to believe it's actually true and who does it benefit. You might be surprised. Suspect from anyone who tells you to believe in them without no research. If they didn't have anything to hide they wouldn't want you uneducated.
    My ovation to her for spreading knowledge and inspire critical thinking. It would be much better if more people chose to look at religion like she does.

      I agree. I am christian and things were easier when I was younger because I just took what I was told. But now,in college with a mind that cannot be sandwiched by mere words...getting along with a lot of nowadays Christians is a struggle. The sad thing is a lot of people are innocently shaping their entire lives around concepts and so called rules that aren't even in the Bible. My advice: get an education, research into every detail you're told and remember you are serving God, not man and He cares about our well being (even genuine Biblical principles are geared towards helping us live better,happier lives)

She has absolutely no idea what she is talking about, spreading misinformation, and unfortunately people are eating it up. Shes completely wrong.
    If she or whoever else chooses not to wear the hijab, then ok, but just leave it at that. Dont go and misinterpret the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet, weaving in neofeminist views to mislead people into believing hijab isnt a facet of Islam and a part of being muslim. Just admit you don't care to follow the requirement of hijab and move along without augmenting the religion to suit your personal views and feelings about hijab.

      @@aif4046it absolutely is not just a cultural thing. The hijab is mandatory upon women wether you like it or not. The believing woman have to cover themselves . This is not only supported by the quran but also by many hadiths, where the aurat of a woman is described and so much more. Denying something islam has made mandatory can take you out of the folds of islam so everyone without proper knowledge should always be careful with what they said. In islam so far there have been many scholars, studying islam for years and years and then imagine a woman who isn’t even a scholar comes here and says hijab isn’t mandatory? I mean you can guess that that is her own interpretation according to her desires. Im a woman myself so before you claim im a man spouting nonsense.

    • @proffoctopus66yearsago22
      @proffoctopus66yearsago22 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The hijab, no offence, but through what i've learnt through the years seems like a cultural thing too. Since the middle east was mostly desert with the Sun being on full blow, there were a lot of chances of having your hair turn brittle, dry and dusty. People often used to cover their heads to save their hair from being foiled by the dust and the dehydration that came from spending too much time under the sun. But then again, follow whatever feels right for you I guess.
      Because at the end of the day, its more about who lived an impactful life rather than who lived by the rules, just dont let any religion dictate you so much that you lose any sense of self identity. Im not attacking anyone here, just saying that religion exists for you to have faith that someone greater out there has faith in you.

  • @mial.6418

    For some reason, men think they can simply force women to observe hijab. Instead, the Quran and Prophet Muhammad are clear: in Islam, no such permission exists for men to force hijab on women.
    The Quran 24:31 obliges men to observe modesty: “Say to the believing men that they restrain their eyes and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Surely, Allah is well aware of what they do.”
    In Islam, men have an obligation to God and to women to observe hijab. I imagine a conversation between someone teaching the Quran and a guy as follows:
    Teacher: Don’t stare at women.
    Guy: But she’s wearing revealing clothing!
    Teacher: Why are you staring? Stop.
    Guy: But it’s revealing.
    Teacher: Why-are-you-staring?
    Guy: Uh…
    It’s that simple. If a guy chooses to accept Islam, Islam says he must observe hijab. The Prophet Muhammad’s directives further affirm this view. He admonished men, “Be chaste yourselves, and women will be chaste as well,” again putting the primary burden of hijab on men.
    This point was again illustrated when the Prophet rode with his companion Al Fadl bin Abbas. A woman described as strikingly beautiful approached the Prophet to seek his guidance on some religious matters. Al Fadl began to stare at her because of her beauty.
    Noting this, the Prophet Muhammad did not scold the woman for dressing immodestly or revealing her beauty. Instead, he “reached his hand backwards, catching Al Fadl’s chin, and turned his face to the other side so that he would not gaze at her”. Thus, the Prophet Muhammad once more established that the primary burden to observe hijab rests on men.

    Yes, Muslim women have obligations towards their husbands and etc, but honestly, all those 'obligations towards husbands' that you were saying are just culture in a certain countries. Yes, women have to obey to their husbands(as long as the husbands obey the law of Islam(syariah)) but men also have to respect and protect their wives.
