MK8 has EA888 EVO4 and it has crackles and pops/bangs from factory. I would imagine that it can't be that bad for the car if the manufacturer is tuning it to have them.
The pops sounds really cool and honestly with the stock exhaust it doesn't sound very obnoxious at all except for maybe the few louder pops but yeah, I feel like there's just some peace of mind not having them on so you don't get unwanted attention.
Interesting fact: The Audi Quattro Sport driven by Walter Röhrl at Pikes Peak as an official factory entry. Used retarded ignition and combustion in the exhaust (how a pops and bang map works) for Anti-Lag to prevent the massive turbos from stalling. The car featured so much oil contamination from fuel that they changed oil after every single run before bring the car down the hill. It also suffered from premature value wear as the stems were subjected to increased localised heat. Obviously a very very extreme example but its interesting to note Audi could not address the possible problems caused by combustion in the exhaust on the purpose built factory race car without vastly increased maintenance. Do you honestly think they addressed it on your S3 🤔 Crackle maps offer nothing other than noise while the potential issues from combustion in the exhaust is well established
thanks for the detailed response! I do my maintenance at shortened intervals already just due to being tuned but thanks for further solidifying my choice to turn them off haha, thanks for watching!
Video's are great dude, how you getting on with the sound now its been a few months? You still got the vibrant resonator? I remember you not being to excited about it 😂
thanks man! I ended up keeping the resonator and I’ve actually grown to really enjoy the sound haha, I do plan to eventually get a full exhaust though!
Dang bro I had exact issue when I flash the dsg tune using my mobile! I ended up using the laptop and it was super quick. It’s to use the mobile now 😅 But I’m currently running an issue where the oil malfunction system notice is off and can’t clear it when I’m on stage 2 91 crackle tune. I flash it back to stock file and re-flash it’s still on the dashboard. Interestingly, when I’m on the Stage 2 91 file without the crackle tune the notice is not there. Have you experienced any issues like this?
I was gonna flash my Stage 2 to the crackles and pops this weekend. Why haven't I yet...? I guess because I also want to know more. Might have to hold off, as I kinda like it with and without. That's a decent problem. Assuming you had your valves open throughout this video, I've finally heard what my car sounds like in a video. So, the pops and crackles are peacock feathers unfurled, seeking attention and looking/sounding beautiful. Are you single? I believe that answer is also your answer for the crackles/pops. I don't think I'm imparting life's wisdom here. Just helping to make a decision in a manner better than a coin flip.
One of the benefits of being able to easily swap back and forth between the crackles is that it’s an easy thing to try out, I’d say try it out just to see how you like it haha Not single though, have an amazing gf and two mini Dachsunds 😄
you’re going to love the car! I’ve gone with integrated engineering for all of my performance parts, WCT performance in Markham has been my go-to for everything
Sounds like you still have the "burbles" when an upshift occurs under throttle, so that's good. The gratuitous pops and crackles under de-acceleration don't really appeal to me but, then again, I'm a bit older than you!
yeah even stock under heavy acceleration you’ll get the notorious “dsg fart” when in dynamic mode! because of my downpipe it’s a lot more pronounced and never gets old haha
@@JayChesterman real jolt shifting between gears, especially 2nd to 3rd. Did the adaptation protocols and everything still didn't seem to like it. That was on a stage 1 high trq file. I've since gone stage 2 high trq so might try flash the V2 again and see if it's any different
Same situation as you with the V2. I recently went stage 2 ecu +Tcu and it shift like ass from 2nd to 3rd. And it sometimes slip at WOT... on a 15k miles car. I'm working with them to solves this but tbh it makes me want to go with a whole other company

So im no expert but i believe i have a pretty string grasp on what they're doing to achieve the crackles. essentially those sounds you hear when you let off the gas, is unburnt fuel leaving the engine and then making mini explosions inside your exhaust pipe due to the heat of the pipe itself. they achieve more of the crackles in the tune, by making the injectors spray a hair more fuel as you let off the gas, so more is unburnt by the engine, and instead explodes in the exhaust manifold/pipe itself, thus making the noises. Now this is very bad to use if you have any kind of catalytic converter, stock or aftermarket. the exploding fuel basically just burns up the cats destroying them very quickly. I am uncertain as to how bad it is for a turbo. im just an amateur, and all my knowledge comes from owning a supercharged 3.0t, so obviously knowledge about turbos doesn't apply to me. From what i know though, id thinking its almost certain that its bad for the health of a turbo. getting extra hot for no reason just doesnt seem like it could be a good thing in anyway. could be wrong though. also, for my platform with 034 software, when you have the crackle tune on, BUT you go into the individual drive select mode and select comfort for only engine sound, it makes the crackles basically non existent.
Thanks for the detailed response man! from what I gather you’re spot on, IE crackles are also only enabled in sport mode but i drive in sport mode very frequently so I’d be having those explosions pretty often haha
Pops and bangs are bad with stock exhaust component like yours. The high pressure from the pop and bangs puts a lot of pressure back on the turbo making the chances of something breaking a lot higher. Have a high flow down pipe with a complete high flow cat back exhaust set up is ALOT more safe. Those are legit explosion happening in your exhaust the last thing you want is ANYTHING effecting the flow of the exhaust
@@JayChestermanincreases temperatures in the exhaust and increases the chance of burning out exhaust valves. Nobody ever talks about how combustion in the exhaust specifically impacts the EA888 engine found in the S3 as the Gen 3 TSI engine features an integrated water-cooled exhaust manifold that aids in bringing the engine up to operating temperature more quickly and cools under full load. How does this behave when exhaust temperatures are constantly changing and inconsistent? Lots of other EA888 specific concerns and questions exist imho Think you did the right thing switching off imho

Some people just shouldn’t be tuning their vehicle. A tune is taking the engine and sending it to failure sooner than without, burbles or not. At that point does it honestly matter. I only say this because you are already pushing that 888 way closer to its limits than stock. Any time you go up in boost, fueling, etc you are simply putting more and more stress on the motor. I almost guarantee the pop tune won’t mess with the turbo more than making it run higher boost numbers constantly that it can only hold for so long.
this is a good point, and something that I accepted before tuning, but I still feel like adding even a little more to the equation with the pop tune isn’t worth the minimal reward of added sound (as much as I enjoy the added sound haha)

The key is crackles / pops
Under deceleration ….
This will not harm the engine or turbo , that’s well established.
Very informative..As an everyday day car the crackles get to be too much
