    Is the light behind Randy set at ab plus or in other words 100 percent on everything. I have been waiting for them to come in but I found someone who has blues so I might get them, wanted to see how blue they actually are and that looks pretty blue. If I tune down blue could I still get the same pop as using the pro and having blue tuned up and white lowered . I like a crisp day time look but dont want to lose pop. If I prepay am I guaranteed a pro? If I dont buy the blues? Lots of people waiting and every store is out! Kinda doubtful that this late in the game that I will get one even if prepaid If you go in order of payment. Only other light that seems to compare that is cheaper is maxspect razor as far as spectrum, and having alot of uv or acentic or deep blue or whatever its called and I know you gave maxspect high review when you coverd it. Dont really want one on legs and dosnt look to have any shimmer either!

    Hi guys, I am in the middle of setting up my 12ft x 3ft x 2ft fish tank, based on your light spacing. How many lights would you recommend over this tank. It will have no SPS corals, will be lps and softies.

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, you may want to consider going with the XR15 so that you can evenly space them from front to back. Since your tank is 3' from front to back, you'd really be best off with two rows of lights. For a softie/LPS tank, going with a total of 12 XR15s, 6 in the front row and 6 in the back row, would likely be your best option in terms of coverage. Either way, that's a BIG tank!

  • @adams901
    @adams901 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've got 4 xr30 over a 525xl mixed reef, would spacing the lights 13" apart (centre of the light to centre) be a good option? I notice you spaced 3 xr30 blues 14" from each other on the 4ft tank

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Given that your tank is longer than our 48" long test tank, you may have to play with the spacing a bit. I'd check out the spacing on our XR15 video. While this might not translate perfectly to a longer tank with larger light fixtures, you can use that spacing ratio and adjust for your tank length to get a good starting point.

    So question on this once you establish the spread at 100% power will lowering the power mess up anything to do with the spread and require things to be re-adjusted? or as you reduce intensity everything as far as spread remains the same?

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  4 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @Mike__B

    Out of curiosity, do you think this new design is more for heat management issues, a way to cram more LEDs into the same heatsink by spreading them out more? Or because they felt like spreading out the LEDs gives better light? If the later, why do you think it took them so long to figure it out?

    • @sunnygoold9449
      @sunnygoold9449 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it's the later - that's what ET say and it makes sense - they did redesign the fan (to be quieter not more effecient) and I think they said it will come on less. What they said they wanted to do with this light is chop off the top of the cone (the hotspot) in comparison to the G4 - I think it's about diffusers (they utilised a different technique) and blending of the light. When the G4 came out it was more trendy to have peak par - but also if they spread out the LEDs I think they would have had less blending = disco ball. Now the push is to mimic T5s but still get the shimmer. I actually feel like they made a HUGE leap since the G4s. That's my 2c anyhow. I also suspect this light (from Ecotech's perspective) is about having less lights above your tank - so you get great light coverage from a sleeker look - plus there is a trend for tanks that are deeper front to back than 60cm.

    Great video, I'm binge watching your episodes all night like I would for Game of Thrones or The Expanse series. Thank you for these informative series, you guys really do add alot to our community.
    I do have a question: You mentioned the light diffuser helps spread the lights more evenly, so how would that impact the recommended intensity levels of the XR30's? If I go for 20% intensity for LPS corals as per your recommendations, then how much higher should I increase the intensity to compensate for PAR reduction when I use the Light Diffuser?
    Thanks again for your contribution to our hobby. I wish you the best in your endeavors, so you can grow your audience to more people, so that we can admire Mother Nature in our homes, considering the sad state of our oceans. Unfortunately, I think within our lifetime we will see the coral reefs decline more and more. I believe that in the near future, our hobby will not only be for business or pleasure, but will help preserve life that would otherwise become extinct in Nature.

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good question. I don't believe we've done a before and after diffuser measurement of par on the new G5 models, but based on previous Radion's, I think it's safe to assume about a ~20% loss in par with the diffuser.

    I'm not trying to come off as petulant but what is the point of buying a really expensive light like this just to run it at 20-40%? I know the coloration these get is great and higher intensity alows for deeper tanks but wouldn't it be better just to make the lights max around the 50% of what it already is and lower the cost a bit? Serious question.

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You're exactly right. Our testing approach is to focus on a single light model and provide recommendations for using it as if no other option exists, even though we all know there are a multitude of combinations we could use to achieve similar goals. As we continue testing the new Radion G5 offering, I won't be surprised if we find that a single XR15 will be ideal for our LPS tank goals in a 60gal cube (where we will certainly use more than 25% of the light) or maybe even 4x-5x Radion XR15s for our SPS goals on the 120gal tank. Making a single video that compares four different models would not only be extremely time consuming to watch, but would also wind up being very difficult to provide direct recommendations and advice on setting them up which is why we separate them out into their own individual tests.

      More light fixtures will always mean better coverage. You'll just want to make sure that you're not providing the corals with too much light. We generally shoot for 75-150 par for LPS and softies, then 200-350 par for SPS.

I went for the full tank coverage look though on my 2ft tank so I dont have to worry about lps/softy placement anymore. No hotspots with par meter mounted with the rms mount. Of course, there is always going to be a personal balance between budget/features/wants/needs.

      More than that I think this LED is designed to kill the hybrid. So now instead of getting the T5 Hybrid with a Radion you only need the Radion. I mean look at the spread and the PAR and tell me if a T5 Hybrid adds much value? I also don't think the XR30 is the hobbyist light - I think that's the XR15 and I can't wait to see those numbers. I think we'll see on a 4 foot mixed reef we'll be growing acros at the top with 2 x XR15s. They may have to add an extra one as the frags become colonies but, assuming we see those results, many will say they are the best value lights in the hobby.

    Looks like they copied the zettlight Q Maven design.

      Literally nobody, nobody at all, has ever heard of that light, ever, ever.

    More of a ripoff too. More lights out in the market now that do the same exact thing the same exact results, and the same exact spectrum, for a cheaper price. Honestly, ecotech is like apple of the reefing world, a premium price for a product that does the same exact thing as every other thing in the market, and in some instances, less than others in the market. Save your money, buy a different light.

      @@devinvenegas8037 lmao.. so having Mobius is enough reason to go spend $800 plus for some lights? Have it my friends🤣🤣

      Bryant Carr I guess people who have enough discretionary income can decide. Personally, I think a manufacturer like EcoTech is better than Chinese black boxes. People forget about customer service, ecosystem, etc.

      As long as people are allowed to have different opinions and that people will earn more money than others, then there will always be premium priced products.
      If you don't like them, or can't afford them, then don't buy them, but stop being all high and mighty, pretending like everyone agrees with you.

      @@devinvenegas8037 I guess you're missing my point.. it's not about if you can afford the lights or not. It's more about the end results, can these lights grow corals.. I know a lot of people who has black boxes (Chinese boxes) that produce very nice looking corals.. I'm not here to change your mind, if you would like to go out an buy these lights, by all means have at it! These lights are not for me.. I refuse to go out and buy $800 plus lights every few years because ecotech states you get 20% better spread everytime new lights come out..

    Hey is the par level taken at the bottom of the tank? And running at 100% intensity? How deep is the tank?

    • @BRStv

      Depends on what area of the video you're referring to. For example, if you go to the 14:52 minute mark, you'll see par readings for depths of 6", 12", and 18" below the water surface. The intensity at that particular spot in the video was set to 35%.
