    I love the fact that there is an upgrade path. Getting the upgrade kit will allow me to extend the life of my existing lights while getting the benefits of the new features. Many are not seeing this one key advantage. The LEDs are the main component that wear over time. This helps solve that issue as well.

    I'll be sticking w/my G5s until the LEDs burn out, then perhaps the upgrade kit. Good time to pick some G5s up now that everybody on R2R is unloading them for the latest thing, or get a new G5 at a discount. Pretty sure the corals aren't going to notice the difference as long as they're getting enough par and spread. But hey, this is for the Reefer anyway!

    At the surface it didn't seem like they changed much but you can tell when you put them side by side with the different amounts of leds and patterns. Not something I would shell out a few extra hundred per light to upgrade to if I had a g5 but definitely cool.

    I initally had negative opinions about this new release, but it really points out the poor LED layout of the G5. That said, makes me even more reluctant to spend money on either G5 or G6. ATi's Straton shouldn't have much to worry about.

    • @Mike__B
      @Mike__B 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The upside about all these different version upgrades is you can always rely on a segment of the hobby population to be the apex tech hoarders aka they always need the latest because they perceive it to be better. Now this population of people will usually allow you to get used gear, there's always some who thinks they should get a premium and barely have a discount at all but if you hold firm you'll find getting gear for 50% off.

    Sorry, Just don't see the big differences in this next Gen compared to the Gen 5. Spectrum testing side by side may reveal a slight difference, but the true and definitive test would be coral growth. Side by side coral growth testing in identical parameters. But even that would most likely be splitting hairs.

      @@ReefBuildersVideo Jake, there is a bit of talk lately that LED UV's in that 385 nm don't produce true usable UV at depth in a aquarium. Many question if UV is even needed, while some like Paletta speculate that the lack of it maybe the reason that RTN and STN happens. I personally have never seen any studies that support UV is needed for coral growth/health.

    @dusk1947 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great Video Reef Builders. These deep dives are exactly what the online community needs.
    I'm gona nerd out an make a constructive argument ( I hope), as you're doing a follow up: I've heavily question these being an actual "next generation" light. Mostly because EcoTech has NOT made a convincing argument showing it. Reading between the lines of there release; these are more like "Gen 5 Actinic" & "Gen 5 Warm white"...I'm not questioning their ability to grow corals and the argument is exclusive to comparing the 5 & 6's in a head-to-head. Mostly because the Gen 5's are fantastic, so if the Gen 6 is only "as good" as the 5's: they will certainly grow corals. And we know the lens is better.
    However, the LED data available to the public shows this to be more of a spectrum shift, rather than a "next generation". Especially with the Blue's where they swapped out photosynthetically active spectrum's in the Gen 5 to include more biofluorescent spectrums in the Gen 6. It will excite more fluorescent pigments (which is the claim they made in marketing), but this trade comes at an arguable and likely cut to photosynthesis. (Which really needs to be tested, it's self admittedly speculation at this point based on a lack a information)
    Looking from the outside. The Gen 6 Pro might be a marginal increase for the sake of the corals. But, the Gen 6 Blue looks to be more of an esthetic upgrade which make the corals glow to our eyes; more than something for coral health.

    The Len's however are a true upgrade based off the data and marketing. The lens is convincingly "next gen"... but is the rest of this thing?
    Again, I'm not questioning the quality of these. They are awesome. But, I am questioning the marketing.
    Even with that, I'm probably still going to buy Gen 6's over the next year as I was planning on going from XR15's up to XR30's, so why not get the "next gen" while I'm at it.

    • @dusk1947
      @dusk1947 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tomg5405 I respect your opinion, but I respectfully disagree. I've owned both the G5 XR15 Pro & Blue, both exceeded my personal expectations.
      I will say, when a company values a fixture at $450 or $900+, that commands a high level of expectations hard to meet. And that price is hard to justify for many.
      But my Gen 5's have performed admirably. No, the argument I'm making is a technical one. We know the majority of photosynthetic pigments loose sensitivity below 450nm.
      Generally speaking, the 2 primary photosynthetic pigments and 2 accessory pigments in dinoflagates (including zooxanthellae) do not show a photosensitivity below 450nm when they were scrutinized under lab experiments. That information in the basis for my thought process.
      Actinic's are a beautiful light to many. And if a buyers is concern with esthetics, an Actinic range is a selling point.
      But, their is little evidence suggesting Actinic drives photosynthesis; so if a buyers is concern with coral health, then including diodes with a range of 350-450nm is a questionable choice compared to the other opinions available.
      That's a distinction consumers should be aware of.
