They don't hate BEVs. And they will improve this vehicle. Think of this as a test and then let's see how the future bZs are. Toyota will produce 6 BEVs for Europe by 2026 so no, they don't hate BEVS. Their position, their old position, was they don't think BEVS should be the only propulsion system going forward and car owners should have a choice. Their updated position will be articulated by their new CEO at some point after he takes his position (April 1st).

Despite their future promises, I think it's safe to say that Toyota hasn't even bothered: this is just another regular compliance car. Thank you Bjørn for putting in the effort and showing us how serious Toyota is about EV's. At the end of the list, just above a 5 year old Zoë. Not even 100 software updates are going to pull Toyota out of the grave they dug for themselves.

@@Moody_Blues_ "Toyota also claims the battery has been developed to still maintain 90% of its original capacity after 10 years and 240.000 km"... Claim... Sure.. But prove it. Claims doesnt mean anything. Tesla got numbers out on remaining battery capacity of their EVs, easy to google and its roughly 10% battery loss after guarantee is gone. Tesla CLAIMS the original battery will last the lifetime of the car if used normally. That should be more than enough. I would like to see 90% battery life after 1 mil km to believe it. That sounds too good to be true AND also unnecessary as the car wont last that long anyway (100,000/2000 = 50yrs). If you would lose 20% battery life (Tesla) the car would still be in great condition to be used by most drivers who arent picky, thats at roughly 20 years of normal use.
So with that claim Toyota is selling clickbaits, which is what they need to do to get back into the race.

I'm used to charging at 40kw with the e-Golf. Didn't expect a modern proper EV to charge that slow. The confidence of the Toyota engineers must be really low if even VW engineers 10 years ago had more confidence in the battery(it's smaller - higher C rating - and has no cooling/heating). In the interest of the owners of this car I really hope the update improves the behavior to allow more full speed charging sessions etc.

I had ordered the Solterra but just before the delivery the factory stopped the delivery of the BZ and the Solterra due to wheel bolts unscrewed on a couple of the cars that had been delivered. Then there was no info about the progress in solving the wheel bolt problem. It September I got tired of waiting and bought an iX instead. It was more than what had budgeted for but definitely worth the extra costs. Then when they continued to roll out the cars again I heard about the charging and battery problems. In the aftermath I am happy that that the delay in delivery made me buy an other car. I wonder how the Lexus RZ will do when they start delivering them. My strategy from Norway was just to go slow to conserve energy, In Germany I hammered it, and was able to go over 100kW for few percentage. BTW The car has about 30km after the 0km range I tried it in France I suffered non working chargers. if you turn off AC you get more range Anyway I have data from charging at 150kw in Spain, I can share it with you. @25:44 - In my Ioniq I plugged an old 3.5mm plug (with no cable) into the Aux port, because every time Bluetooth or Android Auto disconnects, it falls back to the last used source, wich can only be the FM/DAB or AM radio if nothing is connected to the AUX port. And of course the radio is often the loudest source.
Now "listening" to the delightful silenced AUX before connecting BT or AA, stops it from falling back to some loud radio station upon leaving the car.

In the UK I have a FWD with 20 inch wheels. I agree with your poor energy performance findings. At 100% charge, I am getting around 300km (186 miles) indicated range, but as you know the real miles are at least 15% less than that, 255km. However, that is not the full picture. I record the indicated miles at 100% charge, and I am observing a DECLINE in these figures from early January to March by 9%. So in effect my energy consumption is getting worse before I even drive the car. I am not optimistic that the May update is going to give any significant improvement. I did a 210 mile trip on Saturday with a midway charge that I calculated would get me home with about 10 miles to spare. I was 10 miles from home when the miles went to - - - miles. I hadn't experienced that before, so I was a bit anxious. I'm reasonably OK with the rest of the car, but if I knew in December what I know now, I would not have bought it. Very disappointed.

When has they been leading the technology race? Toyota has lived on selling old tech engines that are reliable thanks to moderate power and actually quite bad fuel consumption compared to others with similar size and weight cars. Not a problem with combustion engines since they been more than good enough since the 90s.
The problem then comes when you apply the same ides to a technology that needs to be on the edge to make it usable in day to day life. The battery will probably last forever with how the bms is set up. I'm guessing the high consumption has to do with having a drivetrain that's over sized, but it will probably last forever.

I wouldn't worry about it. Unlike most people commenting here I think Toyota wants to build a competitive BEV. I think they will. If this is a 1.0 product for them, so be it. Improvements will happen and this is still a car built on an TNGA platform, just the e-TNGA variant. A new platform is in the works and this one will be improved. Toyota knows this one needs to be improved but they needed to put something out there and did. Bjorn said Toyota emailed him and changes are coming in May. I think it's the first of a few that will happen. Maybe consider a later bZ from Toyota as if you live in Europe, Toyota said 6 new models are coming by 2026.

ITS WAY OUT IN LEFT FIELD !!! They better do something fast or they’ll continue to lag behind. It’s been an embarrassing start. The recall back in June started it all. It took Toyota and Subaru almost 4 months to figure out the front hub issue. I originally reserved the Subaru Solterra over a year ago. Had to cancel back in September and proudly own a 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5. The Ioniq 5 was motor trend SUV of the year. That’s a well thought EV and it’s competitive.
