You're not the first to mention a second DFAM. I have never considered it honestly but may look into some videos and see what that can actually do for me. Thanks for watching.
Just got a second DFAM. I bought them all individually and pieced together the whole bunch. The Grandmother is my favorite, but the Matriarch is a beast.
I just bought this studio three set along with the mini brute 2s and I'm really excited to pair them all together. I've never had experience with the subharmonicon or minibrute2s. I am a huge fan of semi modular synthesizers. I have played around with things like Korg ms20 make noise zero Coast Behringer Neutron mother 32 and dfam having them all at the same time. I'm rebuilding my setup as this is my dream to get back into and I can't wait to get the dozen other semi modular synthesizers I would dream of having lol.
Subharmonicon is one of my favourite synths. It takes me a bit of tweaking, but I can happen upon hypnotic grooves that I wouldn’t have found on a conventional synth
was very excited to get it.... but returned in a month. Having 3 together sounded like "together" they more useable then by their own. It kills me you can start DFAM from first step and lotsa CV needed to drive it. If it all, as you mentioned, had just single USB to drive it from DAW. Though by now I missed it.... since they fixed the feature to transpose sequence from outside it starts making sense. Somehow from 3 I like M32 ..... but I do have Subsequent 37CV ... with VST editor to automate and such.... so.... ... I got Buchla instead.
A Buchla wow! That's awesome. Honestly, I get what you are saying. It is a difficult learning curve for those who are keyboard musicians or DAW users. It is almost limiting in a sense. I don't plan on keeping mine forever but at least for now. Cheers man!
Nice video! I have the same rig, but I built it over the course of years. I bought the M32 right after it came out (2016?), then another M32 shortly after (later traded for a Make Noise 0-Coast), then the DFAM and finally the Subharmonicon. I probably liked the double M32 & DFAM rig the best, but the siren's song of wave folding sent me down the Make Noise rabbit hole. Like you, the M32 is a favorite, but this is largely due to the time I have put into it to learn most all of its tricks. The DFAM is fun and can sound huge, especially with 4-on-the-floor bass drum emulations. The Sub is good. It plays best by itself and then paired with the DFAM. However, the Sub and M32 can be challenging to keep in tune together (maybe due to a poorly executed factory calibration of my Sub). Oddly, this tuning issue subsides using my Matriarch as the master. Anyway, these are fun synths that can keep your interest for years and years.
HolaTiger, thanks for the explanation.I'm thinking of buying my first modular synthesizer and I have no experience. ¿Those voices in the song are introduced from the mac?
It is a nice system, got a M32 & DFAM myself. Yet I'd buy the GM if that was out when starting out. Put some reverb, chorus and delay on and they sound like a mini System55 😉
They should have make those synths with panels for Synth and matrix to swap their positions. So you could put four or six together without having the matrix too far apart from each other.
Great video. I love the outro track. What’s the vocal sample and what’s playing it? Also, the psychedelic effect, how do you make that happen? Subscribed.
Thanks Steven! No vocal sample, I did that live while recording the SS3. Post production I added harmonies. The psychedelic effect was adding a kaleidoscope in Final Cut Pro.
Nice vid again! Would you please make a vid about the back of the Sound Studio 3 when it comes to pedals? I So far I see you’ve plugged each one to a pedal before going through the Sound Studios’s mixer. Would be nice to see your work around how you plug pedals, keyboards etc. The lack of USB sucks indeed. Thank you 🙏
Hmmm, interesting question but a great observation, as you are correct. There are three pedals I am using and each one creates a different effect for each moog eurorack. If I can remember correctly, I have a spring reverb on the DFAM, a delay on the Mother-32 and an FX processor on the Subharmonicon. I will think more on a video and make myself a note. Thanks for watching and the suggestion.
very cool track at the end (how did you create that kaleidoscope effect in the video?) i recently bought the studio 3 as well...love the mother 32, i think the subharm is great - keep thinking about getting a 2nd one, have looked for videos to see if anyone has used more than one but cant find any), i find the DFAM most frustrating and least enjoyable to use myself...probably need to spend more time with it
Definitely recommend trying out patches to help you learn the DFAM more if you haven't already. The more patches I try from Moog or others the better I understand it. The effect I did was using Final Cut Pro and their effects you just throw it over the video and edit it a bit. Thanks for watching!
I’m wondering if after a year you’d have a different take. I got mine a couple years ago and I think I have a new appreciation for the Mother-32. Initially wasn’t a fan.
I only have the Subharmonicon but I use it with a lot of other gear. I usually either have the envelopes super short so I can use it as percussion or maxed out for ambient stuff, but now it's taking me down the Trautonium rabbit hole. I bought it because it would be the hardest of the three to replicate with other modules or synths.
I've never seen another synth like it. The recent firmware update was pretty awesome too making it more playable. Video coming out on that at the end of the month! Thanks for watching!
Im personally tempted by the DFAM Subharmonicon bundle, it seems more reasonable to me. Id rather get a 0-Coast than a Mother-32 anyway, and if I did that I could get a Strega and have a pretty powerful quartet
In this video, the SS3 is plugged into the mixer that comes with the bundle. I then have the output audio feeding into my audio interface. Oh, and I am using effect pedals plugged into the SS3 mixer. My vocals are being recorded through my audio interface at the same time. Thanks for watching.
It is a pretty cool set up, and I really love the sub but not enough to buy it right now (maybe in the future). I'm more into experimental music and have quite the strange modular set up that is built for droning sound scapes. It works for my musical vision, but that said if I had the cash and more of a conventional musical vision I would definitely invest in this. Great video!
Thanks for watching man! There is a lot you can do here for sure. Have you tried the microcosm pedal? That immediately came to mind when you mentioned you like experimental.
