Moog Subharmonicon | Two Years Later

  • When the 'Sub' was launched in 2020, I did not feel it was my thing. But I was also missing two years of experience. In my last video I rediscovered the Mother-32 when I added a Warps and joined it with the 0-Coast.
    I usually hear Subharmonicon making 'organ' sounds and simple (but intricate) polyrhythms. It's a great design, but it just did not suit my experimental cinematic/westcoast style. Then I realized that in modular, it's not the module that makes the sound, it's the sum of all modules involved. Just looking at the patchpanel triggered my curiousity so I decided to get a 'Sub' instead of a Mavis. Just fooling around with it for a day, but the results are amazing. To be continued!

    I've been wanting to do that 6 out experiment with my SH - bought the mixer, but don't have the individual filters and VCAs (yet). Didn't think about polyphony so much, but individual processing of the oscillators to get 6 distinct sounds. So thanks for doing that science and making me think about polyphony.... Very, very cool.

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Paul, it was a fun experiment to do, but it's unlikely I'll do it again because of the subharmonic relationships. It's very hard to make proper music. But it can make a LOT of noise.

    Great video with inspiring sounds. I too am struggling with the sounds of the subharmonicon sounding too “nice” or almost cheesy like a kind of chip-tune 80s video game soundtrack.
    This gave me ideas to darken it. I have a Strega, 0ctrl, and Pam’s. Any other ideas for good module pairings? Was there a lot of mimeophone processing in this video? I kind of wish you got a little more detailed with the patching so I could better wrap my head around the process. Any other tips or suggestions would be appreciated.

    • @CinematicLaboratory

      Main effects are coming from Desmodus Versio from Noise Engineering. At the end I think I used Mimeophon. I use Replika XT from Native Instruments occasionally, but I don't think I've used it here because Desmodus and Mimeophon are powerful enough on their own.

    Love my SH. So glad they got the bugs worked out FINALLY. She is the heart and soul of my system and I’ll never tire of her.
    I suggest programming 1-maj4-maj6 scales in Just Intonation and running the two seq. outs into a precision adder, no quantization needed. Also works with 1-min3-min5. Just intonation let’s one create “additive” scales without the need to quantize the result. Leads to many new ideas like easily pitch bending your whole patch.
    Hope you enjoy years of fun with your SH. Now that the sequence clk out jacks work and the rest of the bugs seem to be at bay(for now)she is a real beauty.

      I wish I could correct these mistakes, but it's a bit like a blind spot. TH-cam doesn't allow a reupload without losing stats and comments. After a while you don't see them anymore. And I am dutch so I can't see what I don't know. I'll just doublecheck more in my next videos, but I don't mind if my stuff isn't perfect. And I think I'll put 'Trial on Error' on a T-shirt because it's almost like a movie where people get punished when making a mistake.

  • @skelly790

    Yeah, it does sound a bit cheesy. Processing the crap out of it works, but what it really needs is stereo, for those voice blending vibes. Which can be done, if you can dedicate a mixer to the thing. Lots more filters would also be nice. And some VCAs.

    Don’t like organs??

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed. I've been thinking why. First reason is mandatory organ lessons playing music I did not like and second is the sound itself (exceot hammond with leslie speaker on a floyd album). I grew up in the 60's, 70's and 80's and I was super happy with the birth of the synth. Oh, and church organs are awesome too.
